1 When Jabin king of Hazor heard about this, he sent word to Jobab king of Merom, to the king ofShimron, to the king of Achshaph	1 Allorchè Iabin re di Asor ebbe sentite queste cose, mandò a Iobab re di Madon, al re di Semeron, al re di Acsaf,
2 and to the kings in the northern highlands, in the plain south of Chinneroth, and those in the lowlandsand on the slopes of Dor to the west.	2 ai re del settentrione, che abitavano sui monti e nel piano a sud di Cenerot, e nelle campagne e nelle regioni di Dor, presso il mare,
3 To eastward and to westward lived the Canaanites: in the highlands, the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzitesand Jebusites; the Hivites, at the foot of Hermon in the area of Mizpah.	3 al Cananeo dell oriente e dell'occidente, all'Amorreo, all Eteo, al Ferezeo, al Gebuseo delle montagne, e anche all'Eveo che abitava ai piedi dell' Ermon, nella terra di Masfa.
4 They set out with al their troops, a people as numerous as the sands of the sea, with a huge numberof horses and chariots.	4 E tutti usciron fuori colle loro truppe in numero stragrande, come l'arena che e sul lido del mare, con immensa moltitudine di cavalli e di carri.
5 These kings, having al agreed on a meeting place, came and set up camp together at the Waters ofMerom, to fight Israel.	5 E tutti questi re si accamparono insieme alle acque di Merom, per combattere contro Israele.
6 Yahweh then said to Joshua, 'Do not be afraid of them, for by this time tomorrow I shal hand them alover, cut to pieces, to Israel; you will hamstring their horses and burn their chariots.'	6 Ma il Signore disse a Giosuè: « Non ne aver paura, perchè domani in quest'ora medesima io li farò trafigger tutti nel a cospetto d'Israele: tu taglierai i garetti ai a loro cavalli e darai alle fiamme i loro carri ».
7 With al his warriors Joshua caught them unawares near the Waters of Merom and fel on them.	7 E Giosuè, venuto subito con tutto a l'esercito contro di essi alle acque di Merom, li assaltò.
8 Yahweh put them at Israel's mercy and they defeated them and pursued them as far as Sidon theGreat, and as far as Misrephoth to the west, and as far as the Vale of Mizpah to the east; they harried them untilnot one of them was left alive.	8 E avendoli dati il o Signore nelle mani d'Israele, li sconfissero, li inseguirono fino a Sidone la grande, fino alle acque di Maserefot, e al campo di Masfe che è ad oriente. Li sconfisse in modo tale da non lasciarne alcuno,
9 Joshua treated them as Yahweh had told him; he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots.	9 e, facendo come il Signore gli aveva ordinato, tagliò i garetti ai loro cavalli e diede i carri alle fiamme.
10 Joshua then turned back and captured Hazor, putting its king to the sword. Hazor in olden days wasthe capital of all these kingdoms.	10 Tornando poi indietro subito, prese Asor e ne uccise il re colla spada, perchè Asor anticamente dominava sopra tutti questi regni,
11 In compliance with the curse of destruction, they put every living creature there to the sword. Not aliving soul was left, and Hazor was burnt to the ground.	11 Percosse tutte le persone che vi si trovavano, e, senza lasciar nessuno, devastò ogni cosa, fino allo sterminio, poi distrusse col fuoco la stessa città.
12 Al these royal cities and al their kings Joshua put to the sword in compliance with the curse ofdestruction, as Moses, servant of Yahweh, had ordered.	12 Prese tutte le città dei dintorni coi loro re, che percosse e distrusse, come gli aveva ordinato Mosè servo del Signore,
13 Yet of al these towns standing on their mounds, Israel burned none, apart from Hazor, burnt byJoshua.	13 Israele, che diede alle fiamme tutte le altre città, eccettuò quelle poste sulle colline e in luoghi elevati: di queste la sola Asor, città fortificatissima, fu consumata dal fuoco.
14 Al the spoils of these towns, including the livestock, the Israelites took as booty for themselves. Butthey put al the human beings to the sword til they had destroyed them completely; they did not leave a livingsoul.	14 I figli d'Israele si divisero tra di loro tutta la preda di queste città e i bestiami, dopo averne uccisi tutti gli uomini.
15 What Yahweh had ordered his servant Moses, Moses in turn had ordered Joshua, and Joshuacarried it out, leaving nothing undone of what Yahweh had ordered Moses.	15 Quello che il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè suo servo, e che Mosè aveva ordinato a Giosuè, questi lo compì tutto, senza trascurare un solo comandamento, una sola parola di ciò che il Signore aveva comandato a Mosè.
16 In consequence, Joshua captured this entire country: the highlands, the whole Negeb and the wholeof Goshen, the lowlands, the Arabah, the highlands and lowlands of Israel.	16 Giosuè adunque prese tutta la contrada montana, la meridionale, la terra di Gosen, la pianura, la parte occidentale, il monte d'Israele e le sue campagne,
17 From Mount Halak, which rises towards Seir, to Baal-Gad in the Vale of Lebanon at the foot of MountHermon, he captured al their kings, struck them down and put them to death.	17 la parte del monte di Seir sino a Baalgad, lungo la pianura del Libano, sotto il monte Ermon: e ne prese tutti i re, che percosse e uccise.
18 For many a day Joshua made war on al these kings;	18 Per molto tempo Giosuè combattè contro questi re.
19 no city had made peace with the Israelites except the Hivites who lived at Gibeon; al the rest hadbeen captured in battle.	19 Non essendovi stata città che si fosse arresa ai figli d'Israele, eccetto l'Eveo che abitava in Gabaon, le presero tutte combattendo.
20 For Yahweh had decided to harden the hearts of these men, so that they would engage Israel inbattle and thus come under the curse of destruction and so receive no quarter but be exterminated, as Yahwehhad ordered Moses.	20 d'era disegno del Signore che, indurati nei loro cuori, facessero guerra contro Israele per soccombere e non meritare pietà alcuna e perire, come il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè.
21 Joshua then went and wiped out the Anakim of the highlands, of Hebron, of Debir, of Anab, of all thehighlands of Judah and of all the highlands of Israel; he delivered them and their towns over to the curse ofdestruction.	21 In quel tempo Giosuè andò ad uccidere gli Enacim delle montagne di Ebron, di Dabir e di Anab, e di tutta la montagna di Giuda e d'Israele, e distrusse le loro città.
22 No Anakim were left in the territory of the Israelites, except at Gaza, Gath and Ashdod.	22 Della stirpe degli Enacim non ne lasciò alcuno nella terra dei figli d'Israele, eccettuate le città di Gaza, di Get e di Azoto, nelle quali soltanto ne furon lasciati.
23 Joshua captured the entire country, just as Yahweh had told Moses, and he gave it as heritage toIsrael, to be shared out between their tribes. And the country had rest from warfare.	23 Giosuè prese adunque tutto il paese, come il Signore aveva detto a Mosè, e lo diede in possesso ai figli d'Israele secondo le loro parti e le loro tribù. E il paese ebbe riposo dalle guerre.
