Acts of the Apostles 5

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 There was also a man cal ed Ananias. He and his wife, Sapphira, agreed to sel a property;	1 Un certain Ananie, d'accord avec Saphire sa femme, vendit une propriété;
2 but with his wife's connivance he kept back part of the price and brought the rest and presented it to theapostles.	2 il détourna une partie du prix, de connivence avec sa femme, et apportant le reste, il le déposa auxpieds des apôtres.
3 Peter said, 'Ananias, how can Satan have so possessed you that you should lie to the Holy Spirit andkeep back part of the price of the land?	3 "Ananie, lui dit alors Pierre, pourquoi Satan a-t-il rempli ton coeur, que tu mentes à l'Esprit Saint etdétournes une partie du prix du champ?
4 While you stil owned the land, wasn't it yours to keep, and after you had sold it wasn't the money yoursto do with as you liked? What put this scheme into your mind? You have been lying not to men, but to God.'	4 Quand tu avais ton bien, n'étais-tu pas libre de le garder, et quand tu l'as vendu, ne pouvais-tu disposerdu prix à ton gré? Comment donc cette décision a-t-elle pu naître dans ton coeur? Ce n'est pas à des hommes quetu as menti, mais à Dieu."
5 When he heard this Ananias fel down dead. And a great fear came upon everyone present.	5 En entendant ces paroles, Ananie tomba et expira. Une grande crainte s'empara alors de tous ceux quil'apprirent.
6 The younger men got up, wrapped up the body, carried it out and buried it.	6 Les jeunes gens vinrent envelopper le corps et l'emportèrent pour l'enterrer.
7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had taken place.	7 Au bout d'un intervalle d'environ trois heures, sa femme, qui ne savait pas ce qui était arrivé, entra.
8 Peter chal enged her, 'Tel me, was this the price you sold the land for?' 'Yes,' she said, 'that was theprice.'	8 Pierre l'interpella: "Dis-moi, le champ que vous avez vendu, c'était tant?" Elle dit: "Oui, tant."
9 Peter then said, 'Why did you and your husband agree to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Listen! Atthe door are the footsteps of those who have buried your husband; they wil carry you out, too.'	9 Alors Pierre: "Comment donc avez-vous pu vous concerter pour mettre l'Esprit du Seigneur àl'épreuve? Eh bien! voici à la porte les pas de ceux qui ont enterré ton mari: ils vont aussi t'emporter."
10 Instantly she dropped dead at his feet. When the young men came in they found she was dead, andthey carried her out and buried her by the side of her husband.	10 A l'instant même elle tomba à ses pieds et expira. Les jeunes gens qui entraient la trouvèrent morte;ils l'emportèrent et l'enterrèrent auprès de son mari.
11 And a great fear came upon the whole church and on al who heard it.	11 Une grande crainte s'empara alors de l'Eglise entière et de tous ceux qui apprirent ces choses.
12 The apostles worked many signs and miracles among the people. One in heart, they al used to meetin the Portico of Solomon.	12 Par les mains des apôtres il se faisait de nombreux signes et prodiges parmi le peuple... Ils se tenaienttous d'un commun accord sous le portique de Salomon,
13 No one else dared to join them, but the people were loud in their praise	13 et personne d'autre n'osait se joindre à eux, mais le peuple célébrait leurs louanges.
14 and the numbers of men and women who came to believe in the Lord increased steadily. Many signsand wonders were worked among the people at the hands of the apostles	14 Des croyants de plus en plus nombreux s'adjoignaient au Seigneur, une multitude d'hommes et defemmes...
15 so that the sick were even taken out into the streets and laid on beds and sleeping-mats in the hopethat at least the shadow of Peter might fal across some of them as he went past.	15 à tel point qu'on allait jusqu'à transporter les malades dans les rues et les déposer là sur des lits et desgrabats, afin que tout au moins l'ombre de Pierre, à son passage, couvrît l'un d'eux.
16 People even came crowding in from the towns round about Jerusalem, bringing with them their sickand those tormented by unclean spirits, and al of them were cured.	16 La multitude accourait même des villes voisines de Jérusalem, apportant des malades et des genspossédés par des esprits impurs et tous étaient guéris.
17 Then the high priest intervened with all his supporters from the party of the Sadducees. Fil ed withjealousy,	17 Alors intervint le grand prêtre, avec tous ceux de son entourage, le parti des Sadducéens. Pleinsd'animosité,
18 they arrested the apostles and had them put in the public gaol.	18 ils mirent la main sur les apôtres et les jetèrent dans la prison publique.
19 But at night the angel of the Lord opened the prison gates and said as he led them out,	19 Mais pendant la nuit l'Ange du Seigneur ouvrit les portes de la prison et, après les avoir conduitsdehors, leur dit:
20 'Go and take up position in the Temple, and tel the people all about this new Life.'	20 "Allez annoncer hardiment au peuple dans le Temple tout ce qui concerne cette Vie-là."
21 They did as they were told; they went into the Temple at dawn and began to preach. When the highpriest arrived, he and his supporters convened the Sanhedrin -- this was the ful Senate of Israel -- and sent tothe gaol for them to be brought.	21 Dociles à ces paroles, ils entrèrent au Temple dès le point du jour et se mirent à enseigner.Cependant le grand prêtre arriva avec ceux de son entourage. On convoqua le Sanhédrin et tout le Sénat desIsraélites et on fit chercher les apôtres à la prison.
22 But when the officials arrived at the prison they found they were not inside, so they went back and reported,	22 Mais les satellites, rendus sur place, ne les trouvèrent pas dans la prison. Ils revinrent donc annoncer:
23 'We found the gaol securely locked and the warders on duty at the gates, but when we unlocked thedoor we found no one inside.'	23 "Nous avons trouvé la prison soigneusement fermée et les gardes en faction aux portes. Mais quandnous avons ouvert, nous n'avons trouvé personne à l'intérieur."
24 When the captain of the Temple and the chief priests heard this news they wondered what could behappening.	24 A cette nouvelle, le commandant du Temple et les grands prêtres, tout perplexes à leur sujet, sedemandaient ce que cela pouvait bien signifier.
25 Then a man arrived with fresh news. 'Look!' he said, 'the men you imprisoned are in the Temple. Theyare standing there preaching to the people.'	25 Survint alors quelqu'un qui leur annonça: "Les hommes que vous avez mis en prison, les voilà qui setiennent dans le Temple et enseignent le peuple."
26 The captain went with his men and fetched them -- though not by force, for they were afraid that thepeople might stone them.	26 Alors le commandant du Temple partit avec ses hommes et ramena les apôtres, mais sans violence,car ils craignaient le peuple, qui aurait pu les lapider.
27 When they had brought them in to face the Sanhedrin, the high priest demanded an explanation.	27 Les ayant donc amenés, ils les firent comparaître devant le Sanhédrin. Le grand prêtre les interrogea:
28 'We gave you a strong warning', he said, 'not to preach in this name, and what have you done? Youhave fil ed Jerusalem with your teaching, and seem determined to fix the guilt for this man's death on us.'	28 "Nous vous avions formellement interdit d'enseigner en ce nom-là. Or voici que vous avez rempliJérusalem de votre doctrine! Vous voulez ainsi faire retomber sur nous le sang de cet homme-là!"
29 In reply Peter and the apostles said, 'Obedience to God comes before obedience to men;	29 Pierre répondit alors, avec les apôtres: "Il faut obéir à Dieu plutôt qu'aux hommes.
30 it was the God of our ancestors who raised up Jesus, whom you executed by hanging on a tree.	30 Le Dieu de nos pères a ressuscité ce Jésus que vous, vous aviez fait mourir en le suspendant au gibet.
31 By his own right hand God has now raised him up to be leader and Saviour, to give repentance andforgiveness of sins through him to Israel.	31 C'est lui que Dieu a exalté par sa droite, le faisant Chef et Sauveur, afin d'accorder par lui à Israël larepentance et la rémission des péchés.
32 We are witnesses to this, we and the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.'	32 Nous sommes témoins de ces choses, nous et l'Esprit Saint que Dieu a donné à ceux qui luiobéissent."
33 This so infuriated them that they wanted to put them to death.	33 En entendant cela, ils frémissaient de rage et projetaient de les faire mourir.
34 One member of the Sanhedrin, however, a Pharisee called Gamaliel, who was a teacher of the Lawrespected by the whole people, stood up and asked to have the men taken outside for a time.	34 Alors un Pharisien nommé Gamaliel se leva au milieu du Sanhédrin; c'était un docteur de la Loirespecté de tout le peuple. Il donna l'ordre de faire sortir ces hommes un instant.
35 Then he addressed the Sanhedrin, 'Men of Israel, be careful how you deal with these people.	35 Puis il dit aux sanhédrites: "Hommes d'Israël, prenez bien garde à ce que vous allez faire à l'égard deces gens-là.
36 Some time ago there arose Theudas. He claimed to be someone important, and col ected about fourhundred fol owers; but when he was kil ed, al his fol owers scattered and that was the end of them.	36 Il y a quelque temps déjà se leva Theudas, qui se disait quelqu'un et qui rallia environ 400 hommes.Il fut tué, et tous ceux qui l'avaient suivi se débandèrent, et il n'en resta rien.
37 And then there was Judas the Galilean, at the time of the census, who attracted crowds of supporters;but he was kil ed too, and al his fol owers dispersed.	37 Après lui, à l'époque du recensement, se leva Judas le Galiléen, qui entraîna du monde à sa suite; ilpérit, lui aussi, et ceux qui l'avaient suivi furent dispersés.
38 What I suggest, therefore, is that you leave these men alone and let them go. If this enterprise, thismovement of theirs, is of human origin it wil break up of its own accord;	38 A présent donc, je vous le dis, ne vous occupez pas de ces gens-là, laissez-les. Car si leur propos ouleur oeuvre vient des hommes, elle se détruira d'elle-même;
39 but if it does in fact come from God you wil be unable to destroy them. Take care not to find yourselvesfighting against God.' His advice was accepted;	39 mais si vraiment elle vient de Dieu, vous n'arriverez pas à les détruire. Ne risquez pas de voustrouver en guerre contre Dieu." On adopta son avis.
40 and they had the apostles called in, gave orders for them to be flogged, warned them not to speak inthe name of Jesus and released them.	40 Ils rappelèrent alors les apôtres. Après les avoir fait battre de verges, ils leur interdirent de parler aunom de Jésus, puis les relâchèrent.
41 And so they left the presence of the Sanhedrin, glad to have had the honour of suffering humiliation forthe sake of the name.	41 Pour eux, ils s'en allèrent du Sanhédrin, tout joyeux d'avoir été jugés dignes de subir des outragespour le Nom.
42 Every day they went on ceaselessly teaching and proclaiming the good news of Christ Jesus, both inthe temple and in private houses.	42 Et chaque jour, au Temple et dans les maisons, ils ne cessaient d'enseigner et d'annoncer la BonneNouvelle du Christ Jésus.
