1 'My brothers, my fathers, listen to what I have to say to you in my defence.'	1 - «Fratelli e padri, vogliate ascoltare quel che io vi dico a mia difesa».
2 When they realised he was speaking in Hebrew, the silence was even greater than before.	2 Quando ebbero udito che parlava loro in lingua ebraica, tanto più fecero silenzio.
3 'I am a Jew', Paul said, 'and was born at Tarsus in Cilicia. I was brought up here in this city. It wasunder Gamaliel that I studied and was taught the exact observance of the Law of our ancestors. In fact, I was asful of duty towards God as you al are today.	3 E continuò: «Io sono un Giudeo nato a Tarso di Cilicia, ma allevato in questa città, istruito ai piedi di Gamaliele nell'esatta osservanza della legge de' nostri padri, zelante della legge come siete voi tutti, oggi;
4 I even persecuted this Way to the death and sent women as wel as men to prison in chains	4 e ho perseguitato a morte questa dottrina, procurando che uomini e donne fossero arrestati e messi in prigione,
5 as the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify. I even received letters from them to thebrothers in Damascus, which I took with me when I set off to bring prisoners back from there to Jerusalem forpunishment.	5 della qual cosa mi son testimoni il sommo sacerdote e gli anziani, dai quali ebbi lettere pei fratelli di Damasco; e io mi ci recavo per menare in catene a Gerusalemme quelli di là, perchè fossero puniti.
6 'It happened that I was on that journey and nearly at Damascus when in the middle of the day a brightlight from heaven suddenly shone round me.	6 Or mentre io ero in cammino, già vicino a Damasco, sul mezzogiorno, d'un subito mi sfolgorò d'intorno una gran luce dal cielo.
7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?"	7 Caddi per terra, e udii una voce che mi diceva: - Saulo, Saulo, perchè mi perseguiti? -
8 I answered, "Who are you, Lord?" and he said to me, "I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom you arepersecuting."	8 Io risposi: - Chi sei, Signore? - Ed egli mi disse: - Io sono Gesù il Nazareno, che tu perseguiti. -
9 The people with me saw the light but did not hear the voice which spoke to me.	9 E quanti erano meco videro ben la luce, ma non udirono la voce di colui che mi parlava.
10 I said, "What am I to do, Lord?" The Lord answered, "Get up and go into Damascus, and there youwil be told what you have been appointed to do."	10 Allora dissi: - Signore, che devo fare? - E il Signore mi rispose: - Lèvati su, va' in Damasco, e qui ti sarà detto tutto quel che devi fare. -
11 Since the light had been so dazzling that I was blind, I got to Damascus only because my companionsled me by the hand.	11 E siccome io non ci vedevo per il bagliore di quella luce, giunsi a Damasco guidato a mano da coloro ch'erano meco.
12 'Someone called Ananias, a devout fol ower of the Law and highly thought of by al the Jews livingthere,	12 Un certo Anania, uomo secondo la legge e del quale tutti i Giudei ivi dimoranti rendevano buona testimonianza,
13 came to see me; he stood beside me and said, "Brother Saul, receive your sight." Instantly my sightcame back and I was able to see him.	13 venne da me, e standomi accanto, mi disse: - Saulo fratello, che tu riabbia la vista! - E in quell'istante stesso lo vidi.
14 Then he said, "The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will, to see the Upright One andhear his own voice speaking,	14 Allora egli disse: - Il Dio dei nostri padri t'ha preordinato a conoscere la sua volontà, a vedere il Giusto e a udire la voce della bocca di lui;
15 because you are to be his witness before all humanity, testifying to what you have seen and heard.	15 giacchè tu gli sarai, presso tutti gli uomini, testimone delle cose che hai vedute e udite.
16 And now why delay? Hurry and be baptised and wash away your sins, cal ing on his name."	16 E adesso, che aspetti? Lèvati, ricevi il battesimo e làvati dei tuoi peccati, invocando il suo nome. -
17 'It happened that, when I got back to Jerusalem, and was praying in the Temple, I fell into a trance	17 Avvenne poi che, tornato a Gerusalemme, mentre pregavo nel tempio, fui rapito in estasi,
18 and then I saw him. "Hurry," he said, "leave Jerusalem at once; they wil not accept the testimony you are giving about me."	18 e vidi Lui che mi diceva: - Fa' presto, esci subito da Gerusalemme, perchè non accetteranno la tua testimonianza rispetto a me. -
19 "Lord," I answered, "they know that I used to go from synagogue to synagogue, imprisoning andflogging those who believed in you;	19 E io osservai: - Signore, essi sanno che ero io a metterli in carcere e flagellare nelle sinagoghe quelli che credevano in te;
20 and that when the blood of your witness Stephen was being shed, I, too, was standing by, in fullagreement with his murderers, and in charge of their clothes."	20 e quando si spandeva il sangue di Stefano, tuo testimone, c'ero anch'io ad approvare, e custodivo le vesti di coloro che l'uccidevano. -
21 Then he said to me, "Go! I am sending you out to the gentiles far away." '	21 Allora mi disse: «Va', ch'io ti manderò lontano verso i Gentili -».
22 So far they had listened to him, but at these words they began to shout, 'Rid the earth of the man! Heis not fit to live!'	22 L'ascoltarono sino a questa parola; ma qui alzarono la voce, dicendo: «Togli dal mondo quest'uomo; non è degno di vivere!».
23 They were yel ing, waving their cloaks and throwing dust into the air,	23 E com'essi gridavano e gettavan via le vesti e lanciavan polvere in aria,
24 and so the tribune had him brought into the fortress and ordered him to be examined under the lash,to find out the reason for the outcry against him.	24 il tribuno comandò che Paolo fosse menato in fortezza, battuto con flagelli e messo alla tortura, a fin di scoprire per qual motivo gridassero così contro di lui.
25 But when they had strapped him down Paul said to the centurion on duty, 'Is it legal for you to flog aman who is a Roman citizen and has not been brought to trial?'	25 E legato che l'ebbero con cinghie, Paolo disse al centurione che era lì presente: «V'è egli lecito di flagellare un uomo Romano, neppur condannato?».
26 When he heard this the centurion went and told the tribune; 'Do you realise what you are doing?' hesaid. 'This man is a Roman citizen.'	26 Il centurione, udito questo, corse dal tribuno, dicendo: «Che stai per fare? quest'uomo è cittadino Romano!».
27 So the tribune came and asked him, 'Tel me, are you a Roman citizen?' Paul answered 'Yes'.	27 Allora il tribuno venne da Paolo e gli chiese: «Dimmi, sei tu Romano?». Ed egli rispose: «Sì».
28 To this the tribune replied, 'It cost me a large sum to acquire this citizenship.' 'But I was born to it,'said Paul.	28 Il tribuno osservò: «A me questa cittadinanza è costata una gran somma!». E Paolo: «Io, invece, l'ho dalla nascita».
29 Then those who were about to examine him hurriedly withdrew, and the tribune himself was alarmedwhen he realised that he had put a Roman citizen in chains.	29 Onde coloro che stavano per torturarlo si ritrassero subito da lui; e il tribuno stesso ebbe paura a saper ch'egli era cittadino Romano, perchè l'aveva fatto legare.
30 The next day, since he wanted to know for sure what charge the Jews were bringing, he freed Pauland gave orders for a meeting of the chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin; then he brought Paul down and sethim in front of them.	30 Il giorno di poi, volendo conoscere esattamente di che cosa lo accusassero i Giudei, il tribuno lo fece sciogliere, e comandò si radunassero i capi dei sacerdoti con tutto il Sinedrio; e, menato fuori Paolo, lo fe' comparire davanti a loro.
