1 'My brothers, my fathers, listen to what I have to say to you in my defence.'	1 “Frères et pères, écoutez un peu, laissez-moi m’expliquer.”
2 When they realised he was speaking in Hebrew, the silence was even greater than before.	2 Quand ils ont vu qu’il leur parlait en hébreu, ils se sont tenus plus tranquilles.
3 'I am a Jew', Paul said, 'and was born at Tarsus in Cilicia. I was brought up here in this city. It wasunder Gamaliel that I studied and was taught the exact observance of the Law of our ancestors. In fact, I was asful of duty towards God as you al are today.	3 Il a alors continué: "Je suis né Juif, je suis de Tarse en Cilicie mais j’ai été éduqué ici dans cette ville. Avec Gamaliel comme maître, j’ai été instruit de la Loi de nos pères de la façon la plus correcte et j’étais fanatique pour Dieu comme vous l’êtes tous aujourd’hui.
4 I even persecuted this Way to the death and sent women as wel as men to prison in chains	4 “J’ai donc poursuivi à mort ce Chemin: je faisais arrêter et mettre en prison les femmes comme les hommes.
5 as the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify. I even received letters from them to thebrothers in Damascus, which I took with me when I set off to bring prisoners back from there to Jerusalem forpunishment.	5 Le grand prêtre et tout le conseil des Anciens peuvent le dire: avec des lettres de pouvoir qu’ils m’ont données, je suis parti chez nos frères de Damas. Je devais faire arrêter ceux du Chemin qui s’y trouvaient et les ramener à Jérusalem pour y recevoir leur condamnation.
6 'It happened that I was on that journey and nearly at Damascus when in the middle of the day a brightlight from heaven suddenly shone round me.	6 “J’étais sur la route et déjà proche de Damas quand, aux environs de midi, tout d’un coup il y a eu comme un éclair, une lumière qui du ciel se projetait sur moi.
7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?"	7 Je suis tombé à terre et j’ai entendu une voix qui me disait: ‘Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu?’
8 I answered, "Who are you, Lord?" and he said to me, "I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom you arepersecuting."	8 “J’ai répondu: ‘Qui es-tu, Seigneur?’ et lui m’a dit: ‘Je suis Jésus de Nazareth que tu persécutes.’
9 The people with me saw the light but did not hear the voice which spoke to me.	9 “Ceux qui m’accompagnaient avaient vu la lumière, mais ils n’entendaient pas celui qui me parlait.
10 I said, "What am I to do, Lord?" The Lord answered, "Get up and go into Damascus, and there youwil be told what you have been appointed to do."	10 Alors j’ai dit: ‘Seigneur, que dois-je faire?’ Le Seigneur m’a répondu: ‘Relève-toi, va à Damas et là on te dira ce que tu dois faire, comme c’est déjà prévu pour toi.’
11 Since the light had been so dazzling that I was blind, I got to Damascus only because my companionsled me by the hand.	11 “La lumière avait été telle que je restais sans voir; mes compagnons m’ont donc pris par la main jusqu’à l’arrivée à Damas.
12 'Someone called Ananias, a devout fol ower of the Law and highly thought of by al the Jews livingthere,	12 Il y avait là un certain Ananias, un homme très observant de la Loi: tous les Juifs installés là-bas en disent du bien.
13 came to see me; he stood beside me and said, "Brother Saul, receive your sight." Instantly my sightcame back and I was able to see him.	13 Il est venu me trouver et il m’a dit: ‘Frère Saul, recouvre la vue!’ Au même moment j’ai pu voir.
14 Then he said, "The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will, to see the Upright One andhear his own voice speaking,	14 Il m’a dit alors: ‘Le Dieu de nos pères t’a choisi d’avance pour connaître ses desseins, pour voir le Juste et entendre sa propre voix.
15 because you are to be his witness before all humanity, testifying to what you have seen and heard.	15 Avec tout ce que tu as vu et entendu, tu lui rendras témoignage devant les personnes les plus diverses.
16 And now why delay? Hurry and be baptised and wash away your sins, cal ing on his name."	16 Que te reste-t-il à faire? Reçois le baptême et invoque son Nom: ainsi tu seras lavé de tes péchés.’
17 'It happened that, when I got back to Jerusalem, and was praying in the Temple, I fell into a trance	17 “Après mon retour à Jérusalem, un jour où je priais au Temple, j’ai eu une extase.
18 and then I saw him. "Hurry," he said, "leave Jerusalem at once; they wil not accept the testimony you are giving about me."	18 Je l’ai vu qui me disait: ‘N’attends pas davantage, sors au plus tôt de Jérusalem, car ils ne feront aucun cas de ton témoignage à mon sujet.’
19 "Lord," I answered, "they know that I used to go from synagogue to synagogue, imprisoning andflogging those who believed in you;	19 “J’ai répondu: ‘Seigneur, ils savent bien que j’emprisonnais ceux qui croient en toi et que je les faisais flageller dans les synagogues.
20 and that when the blood of your witness Stephen was being shed, I, too, was standing by, in fullagreement with his murderers, and in charge of their clothes."	20 Et quand on a versé le sang d’Étienne, ton martyr, j’étais présent et j’étais d’accord. Même je gardais les vêtements de ceux qui le mettaient à mort.’
21 Then he said to me, "Go! I am sending you out to the gentiles far away." '	21 Mais le Seigneur m’a dit: ‘Pars, je t’envoie au loin, vers les païens!’… ”
22 So far they had listened to him, but at these words they began to shout, 'Rid the earth of the man! Heis not fit to live!'	22 Jusqu’à cette dernière phrase on avait écouté Paul. Mais alors ils se mirent à crier: "Débarrassez le monde de cet individu, il n’a pas le droit de vivre!”
23 They were yel ing, waving their cloaks and throwing dust into the air,	23 Ils criaient, ils déchiraient leurs vêtements et soulevaient des nuages de poussière.
24 and so the tribune had him brought into the fortress and ordered him to be examined under the lash,to find out the reason for the outcry against him.	24 Le commandant ordonna de faire passer Paul dans la forteresse, puis il demanda de le flageller jusqu’à ce qu’on sache pourquoi on criait tellement contre lui.
25 But when they had strapped him down Paul said to the centurion on duty, 'Is it legal for you to flog aman who is a Roman citizen and has not been brought to trial?'	25 Mais quand on voulut lui enlever ses vêtements, Paul dit au centurion: "Avez-vous le droit de flageller un citoyen romain tant qu’il n’a pas été jugé?”
26 When he heard this the centurion went and told the tribune; 'Do you realise what you are doing?' hesaid. 'This man is a Roman citizen.'	26 Le centurion alla aussitôt trouver le commandant pour lui dire: "Il est romain, qu’est-ce que tu veux faire?”
27 So the tribune came and asked him, 'Tel me, are you a Roman citizen?' Paul answered 'Yes'.	27 Le commandant s’approcha de Paul: "Dis-moi: tu es citoyen romain?” Paul répondit: "Oui.”
28 To this the tribune replied, 'It cost me a large sum to acquire this citizenship.' 'But I was born to it,'said Paul.	28 Le commandant fit cette réflexion: "J’ai dû payer cher pour acheter ce titre.” Paul lui dit: "Moi, je le suis de naissance.”
29 Then those who were about to examine him hurriedly withdrew, and the tribune himself was alarmedwhen he realised that he had put a Roman citizen in chains.	29 Aussitôt se retirèrent les soldats qui devaient faire avouer Paul, et le commandant eut peur en pensant qu’il avait passé des chaînes à un citoyen romain.
30 The next day, since he wanted to know for sure what charge the Jews were bringing, he freed Pauland gave orders for a meeting of the chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin; then he brought Paul down and sethim in front of them.	30 Le lendemain il fit délier Paul. Il voulait savoir avec certitude de quoi les Juifs l’accusaient. Il demanda aux grands prêtres de se réunir avec tout le Sanhédrin, et il fit descendre Paul pour qu’il s’explique devant eux.
