1 One of the centurions of the Italica cohort stationed in Caesarea was cal ed Cornelius.	1 Ed era in Cesarea un uomo, chiamato Cornelio, centurione di una coorte detta l'Italiana,
2 He and the whole of his household were devout and God-fearing, and he gave generously to Jewishcauses and prayed constantly to God.	2 Religioso, e timorato di Dio, come tutta la sua casa, il quale dava molte limosine al Popolo, e faceva orazione a Dio assiduamente.
3 One day at about the ninth hour he had a vision in which he distinctly saw the angel of God come intohis house and cal out to him, 'Cornelius!'	3 Ed egli vide chiaramente in una visione circa la nona ora del di venir a se l'Angelo di Dio, e dirgli: Cornelio.
4 He stared at the vision in terror and exclaimed, 'What is it, Lord?' The angel answered, 'Your prayersand charitable gifts have been accepted by God.	4 Ma egli fissamente mirandolo, preso dalla paura, disse: Che è questo, Signore? E quegli rispose: le tue orazioni, e le tue limosine sono salite a memoria nel cospetto di Dio.
5 Now you must send some men to Jaffa and fetch a man cal ed Simon, known as Peter,	5 E adesso spedisci qualcheduno a Joppe a chiamare un tal Simone soprannominato Pietro:
6 who is lodging with Simon the tanner whose house is by the sea.'	6 Questi è ospite di un certo Simone cuoiaio, che ha la casa vicino al mare: egli ti dirà quel che tu debba fare.
7 When the angel who said this had gone, Cornelius cal ed two of the slaves and a devout soldier of hisstaff,	7 E partitosi l'Angelo, che gli parlava, chiamò due de' suoi servitori, e un soldato timorato di Dio, di que', che erano ad esso subordinati.
8 told them al that had happened, and sent them off to Jaffa.	8 E raccontata a questi ogni cosa, gli spedi a Joppe.
9 Next day, while they were still on their journey and had only a short distance to go before reaching thetown, Peter went to the housetop at about the sixth hour to say his prayers.	9 Il dì seguente essendo questi in viaggio, e approssimandosi alla città, Pietro salì alla parte superiore della casa per far orazione circa l'ora di sesta.
10 He felt hungry and was looking forward to his meal, but before it was ready he fel into a trance	10 E avendo fame, bramò di prender cibo. E mentre glielo apparecchiavano, fu preso da un'estasi:
11 and saw heaven thrown open and something like a big sheet being let down to earth by its fourcorners;	11 E vide aperto il cielo, e venir giù un certo arnese, come un gran lenzuolo, il quale legato pei quattro angoli veniva calato dal cielo in terra:
12 it contained every kind of animal, reptile and bird.	12 In cui eravi ogni sorta di quadrupedi, e serpenti della terra e uccelli dell'aria.
13 A voice then said to him, 'Now, Peter, kil and eat!'	13 E udì questa voce: via su, Pietro, uccidi e mangia.
14 But Peter answered, 'Certainly not, Lord; I have never yet eaten anything profane or unclean.'	14 Ma Pietro, disse: no certamente, o Signore, conciossiachè non ho mai mangiato niente di comune, e di impuro,
15 Again, a second time, the voice spoke to him, 'What God has made clean, you have no right to callprofane.'	15 E di nuovo la voce a lui per la seconda volta: non chiamar tu comune quello, che Dio ha purificato.
16 This was repeated three times, and then suddenly the container was drawn up to heaven again.	16 E questo segui fino a tre volte: e subitamente l'arnese fu ritirato nel cielo.
17 Peter was still at a loss over the meaning of the vision he had seen, when the men sent by Corneliusarrived. They had asked where Simon's house was and they were now standing at the door,	17 E mentre Pietro se ne stava incerto dentro di se di quel, che volesse significare la veduta visione: ecco che gli uomini mandati da Cornelio, avendo fatta inchiesta della casa di Simone, arrivarono alla porta.
18 cal ing out to know if the Simon known as Peter was lodging there.	18 E avendo chiamato qualcheduno, interrogarono, se ivi avesse ospizio Simone soprannominato Pietro.
19 While Peter's mind was stil on the vision, the Spirit told him, 'Look! Some men have come to see you.	19 E rivolgendo Pietro per la mente quella visione, disselli lo Spirito: ecco tre uomini, che cercano di te:
20 Hurry down, and do not hesitate to return with them; it was I who told them to come.'	20 Su via scendi, e va con essi senza pensare ad altro: imperocché son io, che gli ho mandati.
21 Peter went down and said to them, 'I am the man you are looking for; why have you come?'	21 E Pietro scese, e disse a quegli uomini: eccomi, sono io quello, che voi cercate: qual è la cagione per cui siete venuti?
22 They said, 'The centurion Cornelius, who is an upright and God-fearing man, highly regarded by theentire Jewish people, was told by God through a holy angel to send for you and bring you to his house and tolisten to what you have to say.'	22 E quelli dissero: Cornelio centurione, uomo giusto, e timorato di Dio, e riputato presso tutta la nazione de' Giudei, ha avuto ordine da un Angelo santo li chiamarti a casa sua, e intendere da te alcune cose.
23 So Peter asked them in and gave them lodging. Next day, he was ready to go off with them,accompanied by some of the brothers from Jaffa.	23 Allora (Pietro) condottili dentro li ricevo in ospizio. E il di seguente levatosi, parti con essi: e alcuni de' fratelli, che erano in Joppe, lo accompagnarono.
24 They reached Caesarea the following day, and Cornelius was waiting for them. He had asked hisrelations and close friends to be there,	24 E il giorno dopo entrarono in Cesarea. E Cornelio raunati i suoi parenti, e i più intimi amici stava aspettandoli.
25 and as Peter reached the house Cornelius went out to meet him, fel at his feet and did himreverence.	25 E in quel che Pietro stava per entrare, andogli incontro Cornelio, e gittatosi a' suoi piedi lo adorò.
26 But Peter helped him up. 'Stand up,' he said, ' after al , I am only a man!'	26 Ma Pietro lo alzò, dicendo: Levati su, io pure sono un uomo.
27 Talking together they went in to meet all the people assembled there,	27 E discorrendo con lui, entrò in casa, e trovò molti insieme adunati.
28 and Peter said to them, 'You know it is forbidden for Jews to mix with people of another race and visitthem; but God has made it clear to me that I must not cal anyone profane or unclean.	28 E disse loro: voi sapete, come è cosa abominevole per un Giudeo l'unirsi, o accostarsi a uno di altra nazione; ma Dio mi ha insegnato a non chiamare comune, o immondo alcun uomo.
29 That is why I made no objection to coming when I was sent for; but I should like to know exactly whyyou sent for me.'	29 Per questo, essendo chiamato, sono venuto senza difficoltà. Domando adunque per qual motivo mi avete chiamato?
30 Cornelius replied, 'At this time three days ago I was in my house saying the prayers for the ninth hour,when I suddenly saw a man in front of me in shining robes.	30 E Cornelio disse: sono adesso quattro giorni, che io me ne stava orando all'ora di nona in casa mia, quand' ecco mi comparve dinanzi un uomo vestito di bianco, e disse:
31 He said, "Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your charitable gifts have not been forgotten byGod;	31 Cornelio, è stata esaudita la tua orazione, e le tue limosine sono state ricordate al cospetto di Dio.
32 so now you must send to Jaffa and fetch Simon known as Peter who is lodging in the house of Simonthe tanner, by the sea."	32 Manda adunque a Joppe a chiamare Simone soprannominato Pietro. Questi è ospite in casa di Simone cuoiaio vicino al mare.
33 So I sent for you at once, and you have been kind enough to come. Here we al are, assembled infront of you to hear al the instructions God has given you.'	33 Subito adunque mandai da te: e tu bene hai fatto a venire. Ora tutti noi siamo dinanzi a te per udire tutto quello, che Dio ti ha ordinato.
34 Then Peter addressed them, 'I now real y understand', he said, 'that God has no favourites,	34 E Pietro aprì bocca, e disse: veramente io riconosco, che Dio non è accettator di persone:
35 but that anybody of any nationality who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.	35 Ma in qualunque nazione chi lo teme, e pratica la giustizia, è accetto i lui.
36 'God sent his word to the people of Israel, and it was to them that the good news of peace wasbrought by Jesus Christ -- he is the Lord of al .	36 La qual cosa fece egli sapere a' fijgliuoli d'Israele, evangelizzando la pace per Gesù Cristo (questi è il Signore di tutti).
37 You know what happened al over Judaea, how Jesus of Nazareth began in Galilee, after John hadbeen preaching baptism.	37 A voi è noto quello, che è accaduto per tutta la Giudea: principiando dalla Galilea dopo il battesimo predicato da Giovanni.
38 God had anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and because God was with him, Jesuswent about doing good and curing al who had fal en into the power of the devil.	38 Come Dio unse di Spirito santo e di virtù Gesù di Nazaret, il quale fornì sua carriera facendo del bene, e sanando tutti coloro, che erano oppressi dal diavolo, conciossiachè Dio era con lui.
39 Now we are witnesses to everything he did throughout the countryside of Judaea and in Jerusalemitself: and they kil ed him by hanging him on a tree,	39 E noi siamo testimoni di tutte le cose, che egli fece nel paese de' Giudei, e in Gerusalemme: ma lo uccisero sospesolo a un legno.
40 yet on the third day God raised him to life and allowed him to be seen,	40 Iddio però risuscitollo il terzo giorno, e fece, che si rendesse visibile,
41 not by the whole people but only by certain witnesses that God had chosen beforehand. Now we arethose witnesses -- we have eaten and drunk with him after his resurrection from the dead-	41 Non a tutto il popolo, ma ai testimonj preordinati da Dio: a noi, i quali abbiamo mangiato, e bevuto con lui, dopo che risuscitò da morte.
42 and he has ordered us to proclaim this to his people and to bear witness that God has appointed himto judge everyone, alive or dead.	42 E ordinò a noi di predicare al popolo, e attestare, come egli da Dio è stato constituito Giudice de' vivi, e de' morti.
43 It is to him that all the prophets bear this witness: that al who believe in Jesus wil have their sinsforgiven through his name.'	43 Di lui testificano tutti i profeti, che la rimessione de' peccati riceve pel nome di lui chiunque in lui crede.
44 While Peter was stil speaking the Holy Spirit came down on al the listeners.	44 Mentre ancor Pietro diceva queste parole, lo Spirito santo discese sopra tutti coloro, che ascoltavano questo sermone.
45 Jewish believers who had accompanied Peter were al astonished that the gift of the Holy Spiritshould be poured out on gentiles too,	45 E rimasero stupefatti i fedeli circoncisi, che eran venuti con Pietro: che anche sopra le genti si fosse diffusa la grazia dello Spirito santo.
46 since they could hear them speaking strange languages and proclaiming the greatness of God. Peterhimself then said,	46 Imperocché gli udivano parlare le lingue, e glorificare Dio.
47 'Could anyone refuse the water of baptism to these people, now they have received the Holy Spiritjust as we have?'	47 Allora disse Pietro: vi ha egli forse alcuno, che possa proibire l'acqua, perché non siano battezzati costoro, che hanno ricevuto lo Spirito santo come noi?
48 He then gave orders for them to be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ. Afterwards they begged himto stay on for some days.	48 E ordinò, che fossero battezzati nel nome del Signor Gesù Cristo. Al lora lo pregarono, che si restasse qual che giorno con loro.
