1 One of the centurions of the Italica cohort stationed in Caesarea was cal ed Cornelius.	1 Un certain Cornélius vivait à Césarée. C’était un centurion du bataillon Italique,
2 He and the whole of his household were devout and God-fearing, and he gave generously to Jewishcauses and prayed constantly to God.	2 un vrai serviteur de Dieu; avec tous ceux de sa maison il faisait partie des adorateurs de Dieu. Il faisait au peuple juif beaucoup d’aumônes et priait Dieu constamment.
3 One day at about the ninth hour he had a vision in which he distinctly saw the angel of God come intohis house and cal out to him, 'Cornelius!'	3 Or voici qu’en milieu d’après-midi il voit sans possibilité d’erreur un ange de Dieu qui entre chez lui et l’appelle: "Cornélius!”
4 He stared at the vision in terror and exclaimed, 'What is it, Lord?' The angel answered, 'Your prayersand charitable gifts have been accepted by God.	4 Lui le regarde en face et il est rempli de crainte. Il demande: "Mais, qu’y a-t-il, Seigneur?” La réponse vient: "Tes prières et tes aumônes sont montées jusqu’à Dieu, elles viennent d’être rappelées à son attention.
5 Now you must send some men to Jaffa and fetch a man cal ed Simon, known as Peter,	5 Maintenant tu vas envoyer des hommes à Joppé pour faire venir un certain Simon surnommé Pierre.
6 who is lodging with Simon the tanner whose house is by the sea.'	6 Il loge chez un tanneur du nom de Simon dont la maison est sur le bord de mer.”
7 When the angel who said this had gone, Cornelius cal ed two of the slaves and a devout soldier of hisstaff,	7 Lorsque l’ange qui lui a parlé s’est éloigné, Cornélius appelle deux de ses domestiques ainsi qu’un soldat serviteur de Dieu choisi parmi ceux qui le servent.
8 told them al that had happened, and sent them off to Jaffa.	8 Il leur raconte toute l’affaire et les envoie à Joppé.
9 Next day, while they were still on their journey and had only a short distance to go before reaching thetown, Peter went to the housetop at about the sixth hour to say his prayers.	9 Le lendemain, tandis qu’ils marchent, quand ils ne sont déjà plus loin de la ville, Pierre monte sur la terrasse pour prier; c’est l’heure de midi.
10 He felt hungry and was looking forward to his meal, but before it was ready he fel into a trance	10 Or voici que Pierre a faim et demande à manger quelque chose. Et pendant qu’on le lui prépare, il a une extase.
11 and saw heaven thrown open and something like a big sheet being let down to earth by its fourcorners;	11 Il voit le ciel ouvert et quelque chose descend du ciel; c’est comme une tente de grand modèle dont les quatre coins viennent se poser sur la terre,
12 it contained every kind of animal, reptile and bird.	12 et à l’intérieur il y a de tout: animaux sauvages, reptiles, oiseaux du ciel.
13 A voice then said to him, 'Now, Peter, kil and eat!'	13 Alors une voix s’adresse à lui: "Allons, Pierre, tue et mange!”
14 But Peter answered, 'Certainly not, Lord; I have never yet eaten anything profane or unclean.'	14 Pierre répond: "Tu n’y penses pas, Seigneur, jamais je n’ai mangé de ce qui est souillé ou impur.”
15 Again, a second time, the voice spoke to him, 'What God has made clean, you have no right to callprofane.'	15 Et de nouveau la voix se fait entendre: "N’appelle pas impur ce que Dieu a voulu pur.”
16 This was repeated three times, and then suddenly the container was drawn up to heaven again.	16 Trois fois de suite la scène se reproduit, après quoi la chose remonte vers le ciel.
17 Peter was still at a loss over the meaning of the vision he had seen, when the men sent by Corneliusarrived. They had asked where Simon's house was and they were now standing at the door,	17 Une fois revenu à lui-même, Pierre cherche en vain à comprendre cette vision qu’il a eue, et c’est alors qu’arrivent les hommes envoyés par Cornélius. Ils se sont renseignés pour trouver la maison de Simon et maintenant ils sont devant la porte.
18 cal ing out to know if the Simon known as Peter was lodging there.	18 Ils appellent, demandant si c’est bien là que loge Simon surnommé Pierre.
19 While Peter's mind was stil on the vision, the Spirit told him, 'Look! Some men have come to see you.	19 Comme Pierre est toujours sous le coup de sa vision, l’Esprit lui dit: "Il y a là des hommes qui te cherchent,
20 Hurry down, and do not hesitate to return with them; it was I who told them to come.'	20 descends sans attendre, car c’est moi qui les envoie.”
21 Peter went down and said to them, 'I am the man you are looking for; why have you come?'	21 Pierre descend donc pour saluer ces hommes. Il leur dit: "Je suis celui que vous cherchez, qu’est-ce qui vous amène?”
22 They said, 'The centurion Cornelius, who is an upright and God-fearing man, highly regarded by theentire Jewish people, was told by God through a holy angel to send for you and bring you to his house and tolisten to what you have to say.'	22 Ils répondent: "C’est pour le centurion Cornélius. C’est un homme droit, un adorateur de Dieu, et d’ailleurs tous les Juifs l’ont en estime. Or il a été averti par un saint ange de te faire venir chez lui pour apprendre de toi quelque chose.”
23 So Peter asked them in and gave them lodging. Next day, he was ready to go off with them,accompanied by some of the brothers from Jaffa.	23 Pierre les fait donc entrer et les garde pour la nuit. Le lendemain il se lève et part avec eux; quelques-uns des frères de Joppé l’accompagnent.
24 They reached Caesarea the following day, and Cornelius was waiting for them. He had asked hisrelations and close friends to be there,	24 Le jour suivant ils arrivent à Césarée. Le centurion Cornélius les attendait; il avait fait venir ses proches et ses amis intimes.
25 and as Peter reached the house Cornelius went out to meet him, fel at his feet and did himreverence.	25 À peine Pierre est-il entré que Cornélius va vers lui, tombe à ses pieds et se prosterne.
26 But Peter helped him up. 'Stand up,' he said, ' after al , I am only a man!'	26 Pierre le relève en lui disant: "Lève-toi donc, je ne suis qu’un homme.”
27 Talking together they went in to meet all the people assembled there,	27 Il commence à lui parler et fait son entrée; il découvre alors tout ce monde qui s’est rassemblé
28 and Peter said to them, 'You know it is forbidden for Jews to mix with people of another race and visitthem; but God has made it clear to me that I must not cal anyone profane or unclean.	28 et il leur dit: "Vous savez très bien qu’il est totalement interdit à un Juif de se lier à un étranger ou d’entrer dans sa maison. Mais Dieu m’a fait voir que personne ne doit être considéré comme impur ou souillé.
29 That is why I made no objection to coming when I was sent for; but I should like to know exactly whyyou sent for me.'	29 C’est pourquoi je suis venu quand vous m’avez appelé, sans faire la moindre objection. Et maintenant je voudrais savoir pourquoi vous m’avez fait venir.”
30 Cornelius replied, 'At this time three days ago I was in my house saying the prayers for the ninth hour,when I suddenly saw a man in front of me in shining robes.	30 Cornélius dit alors: "Il y a quatre jours déjà, j’étais en prière dans ma maison en milieu d’après-midi quand un homme en vêtements resplendissants a été là devant moi.
31 He said, "Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your charitable gifts have not been forgotten byGod;	31 Il m’a dit: Ta prière a été exaucée, tes aumônes ont été rappelées en présence de Dieu.
32 so now you must send to Jaffa and fetch Simon known as Peter who is lodging in the house of Simonthe tanner, by the sea."	32 Envoie donc chercher à Joppé Simon surnommé Pierre, qui se loge chez le tanneur Simon sur le bord de mer; quand il sera là, il te parlera.
33 So I sent for you at once, and you have been kind enough to come. Here we al are, assembled infront of you to hear al the instructions God has given you.'	33 Aussitôt je t’ai envoyé chercher et tu as bien fait de venir, car maintenant nous sommes tous ici devant Dieu, prêts à écouter tout ce qui t’a été commandé par Dieu.”
34 Then Peter addressed them, 'I now real y understand', he said, 'that God has no favourites,	34 Alors Pierre prend la parole. Il leur dit: "Je réalise vraiment que Dieu ne fait pas de différence entre les personnes.
35 but that anybody of any nationality who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.	35 Dans toute nation il regarde avec bienveillance celui qui le craint et fait des œuvres de justice.
36 'God sent his word to the people of Israel, and it was to them that the good news of peace wasbrought by Jesus Christ -- he is the Lord of al .	36 “Or voici qu’il a envoyé au peuple d’Israël un message de paix, une bonne nouvelle par l’intermédiaire de Jésus, le Messie, qui est aussi le Seigneur de tous.
37 You know what happened al over Judaea, how Jesus of Nazareth began in Galilee, after John hadbeen preaching baptism.	37 Vous savez déjà cette affaire qui s’est déroulée à travers tout le pays des Juifs; elle avait débuté en Galilée après le baptême que prêchait Jean.
38 God had anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and because God was with him, Jesuswent about doing good and curing al who had fal en into the power of the devil.	38 Jésus de Nazareth a reçu alors de Dieu sa consécration, œuvre de l’Esprit Saint et de la puissance divine. Et, comme Dieu était avec lui, il est passé faisant le bien, guérissant tous ceux qui étaient opprimés par le diable.
39 Now we are witnesses to everything he did throughout the countryside of Judaea and in Jerusalemitself: and they kil ed him by hanging him on a tree,	39 Nous autres, nous sommes témoins de tout ce qu’il a fait dans la province des Juifs et à Jérusalem. “Ensuite ils l’ont éliminé; ils l’ont fait suspendre au bois des suppliciés.
40 yet on the third day God raised him to life and allowed him to be seen,	40 Mais au troisième jour Dieu l’a ressuscité d’entre les morts et lui a donné de se manifester,
41 not by the whole people but only by certain witnesses that God had chosen beforehand. Now we arethose witnesses -- we have eaten and drunk with him after his resurrection from the dead-	41 non pas à tout le peuple, mais aux témoins que Dieu avait désignés d’avance, c’est-à-dire à nous qui avons mangé et bu avec lui après sa résurrection d’entre les morts.
42 and he has ordered us to proclaim this to his people and to bear witness that God has appointed himto judge everyone, alive or dead.	42 Aussi nous a-t-il chargés de prêcher au peuple, et de dire avec certitude que Dieu l’a choisi pour juge des vivants et des morts.
43 It is to him that all the prophets bear this witness: that al who believe in Jesus wil have their sinsforgiven through his name.'	43 Tous les prophètes lui rendent ce témoignage: quiconque croit en lui reçoit, grâce à son Nom, le pardon de ses péchés.”
44 While Peter was stil speaking the Holy Spirit came down on al the listeners.	44 Pierre était encore à son discours lorsque l’Esprit Saint tomba sur tous ceux qui écoutaient la Parole.
45 Jewish believers who had accompanied Peter were al astonished that the gift of the Holy Spiritshould be poured out on gentiles too,	45 Quelle surprise pour les croyants d’origine juive qui étaient venus avec Pierre: "Quoi, les dons de l’Esprit Saint sont déversés sur des non-Juifs!”
46 since they could hear them speaking strange languages and proclaiming the greatness of God. Peterhimself then said,	46 Ils les entendaient parler en d’autres langues et chanter les merveilles de Dieu. Alors Pierre demande:
47 'Could anyone refuse the water of baptism to these people, now they have received the Holy Spiritjust as we have?'	47 "Peut-on refuser l’eau et ne pas baptiser ceux qui ont reçu l’Esprit Saint tout comme nous?”
48 He then gave orders for them to be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ. Afterwards they begged himto stay on for some days.	48 Et il ordonne de les baptiser au nom du Seigneur Jésus, le Christ. Après quoi on le prie de rester là quelques jours.
