NEW JERUSALEMKING JAMES BIBLE
Now it happened that he was in a certain place praying, and when he had finished, one of his disciplessaid, 'Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.'1 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
He said to them, 'When you pray, this is what to say: Father, may your name be held holy, yourkingdom come;2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins,3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
for we ourselves forgive each one who is in debt to us. And do not put us to the test.'4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
He also said to them, 'Suppose one of you has a friend and goes to him in the middle of the night tosay, "My friend, lend me three loaves,5 And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves;
because a friend of mine on his travels has just arrived at my house and I have nothing to offer him;"6 For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him?
and the man answers from inside the house, "Do not bother me. The door is bolted now, and mychildren are with me in bed; I cannot get up to give it to you."7 And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee.
I tel you, if the man does not get up and give it to him for friendship's sake, persistence wil make himget up and give his friend al he wants.8 I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.
'So I say to you: Ask, and it wil be given to you; search, and you wil find; knock, and the door wil beopened to you.9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
For everyone who asks receives; everyone who searches finds; everyone who knocks wil have thedoor opened.10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
What father among you, if his son asked for a fish, would hand him a snake?11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?
Or if he asked for an egg, hand him a scorpion?12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
If you then, evil as you are, know how to give your children what is good, how much more wil theheavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!'13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
He was driving out a devil and it was dumb; and it happened that when the devil had gone out thedumb man spoke, and the people were amazed.14 And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered.
But some of them said, 'It is through Beelzebul, the prince of devils, that he drives devils out.'15 But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils.
Others asked him, as a test, for a sign from heaven;16 And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven.
but, knowing what they were thinking, he said to them, 'Any kingdom which is divided against itself isheading for ruin, and house col apses against house.17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth.
So, too, with Satan: if he is divided against himself, how can his kingdom last? - since you claim thatit is through Beelzebul that I drive devils out.18 If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub.
Now if it is through Beelzebul that I drive devils out, through whom do your own sons drive them out? They shall be your judges, then.19 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges.
But if it is through the finger of God that I drive devils out, then the kingdom of God has indeed caughtyou unawares.20 But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.
So long as a strong man fully armed guards his own home, his goods are undisturbed;21 When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace:
but when someone stronger than himself attacks and defeats him, the stronger man takes away allthe weapons he relied on and shares out his spoil.22 But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.
'Anyone who is not with me is against me; and anyone who does not gather in with me throws away.23 He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.
'When an unclean spirit goes out of someone it wanders through waterless country looking for aplace to rest, and not finding one it says, "I wil go back to the home I came from."24 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out.
But on arrival, finding it swept and tidied,25 And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished.
it then goes off and brings seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and set uphouse there, and so that person ends up worse off than before.'26 Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.
It happened that as he was speaking, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said, 'Blessed thewomb that bore you and the breasts that fed you!'27 And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked.
But he replied, 'More blessed stil are those who hear the word of God and keep it!'28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.
The crowds got even bigger and he addressed them, 'This is an evil generation; it is asking for a sign. The only sign it wil be given is the sign of Jonah.29 And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.
For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so wil the Son of man be a sign to thisgeneration.30 For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.
On Judgement Day the Queen of the South will stand up against the people of this generation and betheir condemnation, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, look, there is something greater than Solomon here.31 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.
On Judgement Day the men of Nineveh wil appear against this generation and be its condemnation, because when Jonah preached they repented; and, look, there is something greater than Jonah here.32 The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
'No one lights a lamp and puts it in some hidden place or under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand so that people may see the light when they come in.33 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.
The lamp of the body is your eye. When your eye is clear, your whole body, too, is fil ed with light; butwhen it is diseased your body, too, wil be darkened.34 The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.
See to it then that the light inside you is not darkness.35 Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.
If, therefore, your whole body is fil ed with light, and not darkened at all, it wil be light entirely, aswhen the lamp shines on you with its rays.'36 If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.
He had just finished speaking when a Pharisee invited him to dine at his house. He went in and satdown at table.37 And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat.
The Pharisee saw this and was surprised that he had not first washed before the meal.38 And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner.
But the Lord said to him, 'You Pharisees! You clean the outside of cup and plate, while insideyourselves you are fil ed with extortion and wickedness.39 And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.
Fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside too?40 Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?
Instead, give alms from what you have and, look, everything wil be clean for you.41 But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.
But alas for you Pharisees, because you pay your tithe of mint and rue and al sorts of garden herbsand neglect justice and the love of God! These you should have practised, without neglecting the others.42 But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
Alas for you Pharisees, because you like to take the seats of honour in the synagogues and to begreeted respectful y in the market squares!43 Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets.
Alas for you, because you are like the unmarked tombs that people walk on without knowing it!'44 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them.
A lawyer then spoke up. 'Master,' he said, 'when you speak like this you insult us too.'45 Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying thou reproachest us also.
But he said, 'Alas for you lawyers as wel , because you load on people burdens that are unendurable, burdens that you yourselves do not touch with your fingertips.46 And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.
'Alas for you because you build tombs for the prophets, the people your ancestors kil ed!47 Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.
In this way you both witness to what your ancestors did and approve it; they did the killing, you do thebuilding.48 Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres.
'And that is why the Wisdom of God said, "I wil send them prophets and apostles; some they willslaughter and persecute,49 Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute:
so that this generation wil have to answer for every prophet's blood that has been shed since thefoundation of the world,50 That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation;
from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the Temple."Yes, I tel you, this generation wil have to answer for it all.51 From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation.
'Alas for you lawyers who have taken away the key of knowledge! You have not gone in yourselvesand have prevented others from going in who wanted to.'52 Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.
When he left there, the scribes and the Pharisees began a furious attack on him and tried to forceanswers from him on innumerable questions,53 And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things:
lying in wait to catch him out in something he might say.54 Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.
