Matthew 3

NEW JERUSALEM	Biblia Matos Soares
1 In due course John the Baptist appeared; he proclaimed this message in the desert of Judaea,	1 Naqueles dias apareceu João Baptista pregando no deserto da Judeia.
2 'Repent, for the kingdom of Heaven is close at hand.'	2 "Arrependei-vos, dizia, porque está próximo o reino dos céus."
3 This was the man spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said: A voice of one that cries in the desert,'Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight.'	3 Porque este é aquele de quem falou o profeta Isaías, quando disse (Is. 40, 3): Voz do que clama no deserto: Preparai o caminho do Senhor, endireitai as suas veredas.
4 This man John wore a garment made of camel-hair with a leather loin-cloth round his waist, and hisfood was locusts and wild honey.	4 Este mesmo João trazia um vestido feito de peles de camelo e um cinto de couro em volta dos rins; e o seu alimento era gafanhotos e mel silvestre.
5 Then Jerusalem and al Judaea and the whole Jordan district made their way to him,	5 Então iam ter com ele Jerusalém e toda a Judeia e toda a região do Jordão;
6 and as they were baptised by him in the river Jordan they confessed their sins.	6 e eram baptizados por ele no rio Jordão, confessando os seus pecados.
7 But when he saw a number of Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism he said to them, 'Brood ofvipers, who warned you to flee from the coming retribution?	7 Vendo um grande número de fariseus e saduceus que vinham ao seu baptismo, disse-lhes: "Raça de viboras, quem vos ensinou a fugir à ira que vos ameaça?
8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance,	8 Produzi, pois, verdadeiros frutos de penitência,
9 and do not presume to tell yourselves, "We have Abraham as our father," because, I tel you, God canraise children for Abraham from these stones.	9 e não queirais dizer dentro de vós : Temos Abraão por pai! porque eu vos digo que Deus pode fazer destas pedras filhos de Abraão.
10 Even now the axe is being laid to the root of the trees, so that any tree failing to produce good fruit wilbe cut down and thrown on the fire.	10 O machado já está posto à raiz das árvores. Toda a árvore que não dá bom fruto, será cortada e lançada no fogo.
11 I baptise you in water for repentance, but the one who comes after me is more powerful than I, and Iam not fit to carry his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire.	11 Eu, na verdade, baptizo-vos com água para (vos levar à) penitência, mas o que há-de vir depois de mim é mais poderoso do que eu, e eu não sou digno de lhe levar as sandálias; ele vos baptizará no Espírito Santo e em fogo.
12 His winnowing-fan is in his hand; he will clear his threshing-floor and gather his wheat into his barn;but the chaff he will burn in a fire that wil never go out.'	12 Ele tem a pá na sua mão, e limpará bem a sua eira, e recolherá o seu trigo no celeiro, mas queimará a palha num fogo inextinguível."
13 Then Jesus appeared: he came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptised by John.	13 Então foi Jesus da Galileia ao Jordão e apresentou-se a João, para ser baptizado por ele.
14 John tried to dissuade him, with the words, 'It is I who need baptism from you, and yet you come tome!'	14 Mas João opunha-se-lhe, dizendo: "Sou eu que devo ser baptizado por ti, e tu vens a mim !"
15 But Jesus replied, 'Leave it like this for the time being; it is fitting that we should, in this way, do al thatuprightness demands.' Then John gave in to him.	15 Jesus respondeu-lhe: "Deixa por agora, pois convém que cumpramos assim toda a justiça." Ele então concordou.
16 And when Jesus had been baptised he at once came up from the water, and suddenly the heavensopened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on him.	16 Logo que foi baptizado, Jesus saiu da água. E eis que se abriram os céus, e viu o Espírito de Deus descer como pomba, e vir sobre ele.
17 And suddenly there was a voice from heaven, 'This is my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on him.'	17 E eis (que se ouviu) uma voz do céu, que dizia: "Este é o meu Filho amado, no qual pus as minhas complacências."
