Matthew 3

1 In due course John the Baptist appeared; he proclaimed this message in the desert of Judaea,	1 In jenen Tagen trat Johannes der Täufer auf und verkündete in der Wüste von Judäa:
2 'Repent, for the kingdom of Heaven is close at hand.'	2 Kehrt um! Denn das Himmelreich ist nahe.
3 This was the man spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said: A voice of one that cries in the desert,'Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight.'	3 Er war es, von dem der Prophet Jesaja gesagt hat: Eine Stimme ruft in der Wüste: Bereitet dem Herrn den Weg! Ebnet ihm die Straßen!
4 This man John wore a garment made of camel-hair with a leather loin-cloth round his waist, and hisfood was locusts and wild honey.	4 Johannes trug ein Gewand aus Kamelhaaren und einen ledernen Gürtel um seine Hüften; Heuschrecken und wilder Honig waren seine Nahrung.
5 Then Jerusalem and al Judaea and the whole Jordan district made their way to him,	5 Die Leute von Jerusalem und ganz Judäa und aus der ganzen Jordangegend zogen zu ihm hinaus;
6 and as they were baptised by him in the river Jordan they confessed their sins.	6 sie bekannten ihre Sünden und ließen sich im Jordan von ihm taufen.
7 But when he saw a number of Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism he said to them, 'Brood ofvipers, who warned you to flee from the coming retribution?	7 Als Johannes sah, dass viele Pharisäer und Sadduzäer zur Taufe kamen, sagte er zu ihnen: Ihr Schlangenbrut, wer hat euch denn gelehrt, dass ihr dem kommenden Gericht entrinnen könnt?
8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance,	8 Bringt Frucht hervor, die eure Umkehr zeigt,
9 and do not presume to tell yourselves, "We have Abraham as our father," because, I tel you, God canraise children for Abraham from these stones.	9 und meint nicht, ihr könntet sagen: Wir haben ja Abraham zum Vater. Denn ich sage euch: Gott kann aus diesen Steinen Kinder Abrahams machen.
10 Even now the axe is being laid to the root of the trees, so that any tree failing to produce good fruit wilbe cut down and thrown on the fire.	10 Schon ist die Axt an die Wurzel der Bäume gelegt; jeder Baum, der keine gute Frucht hervorbringt, wird umgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen.
11 I baptise you in water for repentance, but the one who comes after me is more powerful than I, and Iam not fit to carry his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire.	11 Ich taufe euch nur mit Wasser (zum Zeichen) der Umkehr. Der aber, der nach mir kommt, ist stärker als ich und ich bin es nicht wert, ihm die Schuhe auszuziehen. Er wird euch mit dem Heiligen Geist und mit Feuer taufen.
12 His winnowing-fan is in his hand; he will clear his threshing-floor and gather his wheat into his barn;but the chaff he will burn in a fire that wil never go out.'	12 Schon hält er die Schaufel in der Hand; er wird die Spreu vom Weizen trennen und den Weizen in seine Scheune bringen; die Spreu aber wird er in nie erlöschendem Feuer verbrennen.
13 Then Jesus appeared: he came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptised by John.	13 Zu dieser Zeit kam Jesus von Galiläa an den Jordan zu Johannes, um sich von ihm taufen zu lassen.
14 John tried to dissuade him, with the words, 'It is I who need baptism from you, and yet you come tome!'	14 Johannes aber wollte es nicht zulassen und sagte zu ihm: Ich müsste von dir getauft werden, und du kommst zu mir?
15 But Jesus replied, 'Leave it like this for the time being; it is fitting that we should, in this way, do al thatuprightness demands.' Then John gave in to him.	15 Jesus antwortete ihm: Lass es nur zu! Denn nur so können wir die Gerechtigkeit (die Gott fordert) ganz erfüllen. Da gab Johannes nach.
16 And when Jesus had been baptised he at once came up from the water, and suddenly the heavensopened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on him.	16 Kaum war Jesus getauft und aus dem Wasser gestiegen, da öffnete sich der Himmel, und er sah den Geist Gottes wie eine Taube auf sich herabkommen.
17 And suddenly there was a voice from heaven, 'This is my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on him.'	17 Und eine Stimme aus dem Himmel sprach: Das ist mein geliebter Sohn, an dem ich Gefallen gefunden habe.
