NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
When they were near Jerusalem and had come to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, then Jesus senttwo disciples,1 Et cum appropinquassent Jerosolymis, et venissent Bethphage ad montem Oliveti : tunc Jesus misit duos discipulos,
saying to them, 'Go to the village facing you, and you wil at once find a tethered donkey and a coltwith her. Untie them and bring them to me.2 dicens eis : Ite in castellum, quod contra vos est, et statim invenietis asinam alligatam, et pullum cum ea : solvite, et adducite mihi :
If anyone says anything to you, you are to say, "The Master needs them and wil send them back atonce." '3 et si quis vobis aliquid dixerit, dicite quia Dominus his opus habet : et confestim dimittet eos.
This was to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet:4 Hoc autem totum factum est, ut adimpleretur quod dictum est per prophetam dicentem :
Say to the daughter of Zion: Look, your king is approaching, humble and riding on a donkey and on acolt, the foal of a beast of burden.5 Dicite filiæ Sion :
Ecce rex tuus venit tibi
mansuetus, sedens super asinam,
et pullum filium subjugalis.
So the disciples went and did as Jesus had told them.6 Euntes autem discipuli fecerunt sicut præcepit illis Jesus.
They brought the donkey and the colt, then they laid their cloaks on their backs and he took his seaton them.7 Et adduxerunt asinam, et pullum : et imposuerunt super eos vestimenta sua, et eum desuper sedere fecerunt.
Great crowds of people spread their cloaks on the road, while others were cutting branches from thetrees and spreading them in his path.8 Plurima autem turba straverunt vestimenta sua in via : alii autem cædebant ramos de arboribus, et sternebant in via :
The crowds who went in front of him and those who fol owed were al shouting: Hosanna to the son ofDavid! Blessed is he who is coming in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heavens!9 turbæ autem, quæ præcedebant, et quæ sequebantur, clamabant, dicentes : Hosanna filio David : benedictus, qui venit in nomine Domini : hosanna in altissimis.
And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil as people asked, 'Who is this?'10 Et cum intrasset Jerosolymam, commota est universa civitas, dicens : Quis est hic ?
and the crowds answered, 'This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.'11 Populi autem dicebant : Hic est Jesus propheta a Nazareth Galilææ.
Jesus then went into the Temple and drove out al those who were selling and buying there; he upsetthe tables of the money-changers and the seats of the dove-sel ers.12 Et intravit Jesus in templum Dei, et ejiciebat omnes vendentes et ementes in templo, et mensas numulariorum, et cathedras vendentium columbas evertit :
He said to them, 'According to scripture, my house wil be cal ed a house of prayer; but you areturning it into a bandits' den.'13 et dicit eis : Scriptum est : Domus mea domus orationis vocabitur : vos autem fecistis illam speluncam latronum.
There were also blind and lame people who came to him in the Temple, and he cured them.14 Et accesserunt ad eum cæci, et claudi in templo : et sanavit eos.
At the sight of the wonderful things he did and of the children shouting, 'Hosanna to the son of David'in the Temple, the chief priests and the scribes were indignant and said to him,15 Videntes autem principes sacerdotum et scribæ mirabilia quæ fecit, et pueros clamantes in templo, et dicentes : Hosanna filio David : indignati sunt,
'Do you hear what they are saying?' Jesus answered, 'Yes. Have you never read this: By the mouthsof children, babes in arms, you have made sure of praise?'16 et dixerunt ei : Audis quid isti dicunt ? Jesus autem dixit eis : Utique. Numquam legistis : Quia ex ore infantium et lactentium perfecisti laudem ?
With that he left them and went out of the city to Bethany, where he spent the night.17 Et relictis illis, abiit foras extra civitatem in Bethaniam : ibique mansit.
As he was returning to the city in the early morning, he felt hungry.18 Mane autem revertens in civitatem, esuriit.
Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it and found nothing on it but leaves. And he said to it,'May you never bear fruit again,' and instantly the fig tree withered.19 Et videns fici arborem unam secus viam, venit ad eam : et nihil invenit in ea nisi folia tantum, et ait illi : Numquam ex te fructus nascatur in sempiternum. Et arefacta est continuo ficulnea.
The disciples were amazed when they saw it and said, 'How is it that the fig tree withered instantly?'20 Et videntes discipuli, mirati sunt, dicentes : Quomodo continuo aruit ?
Jesus answered, 'In truth I tel you, if you have faith and do not doubt at all, not only wil you do what Ihave done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, "Be pul ed up and thrown into the sea," it will be done.21 Respondens autem Jesus, ait eis : Amen dico vobis, si habueritis fidem, et non hæsitaveritis, non solum de ficulnea facietis, sed et si monti huic dixeritis : Tolle, et jacta te in mare, fiet.
And if you have faith, everything you ask for in prayer, you wil receive.'22 Et omnia quæcumque petieritis in oratione credentes, accipietis.
He had gone into the Temple and was teaching, when the chief priests and the elders of the peoplecame to him and said, 'What authority have you for acting like this? And who gave you this authority?'23 Et cum venisset in templum, accesserunt ad eum docentem principes sacerdotum, et seniores populi, dicentes : In qua potestate hæc facis ? et quis tibi dedit hanc potestatem ?
In reply Jesus said to them, 'And I will ask you a question, just one; if you tell me the answer to it,then I wil tel you my authority for acting like this.24 Respondens Jesus dixit eis : Interrogabo vos et ego unum sermonem : quem si dixeritis mihi, et ego vobis dicam in qua potestate hæc facio.
John's baptism: what was its origin, heavenly or human?' And they argued this way amongthemselves, 'If we say heavenly, he wil retort to us, "Then why did you refuse to believe him?";25 Baptismus Joannis unde erat ? e cælo, an ex hominibus ? At illi cogitabant inter se, dicentes :
but if we say human, we have the people to fear, for they al hold that John was a prophet.'26 Si dixerimus, e cælo, dicet nobis : Quare ergo non credidistis illi ? Si autem dixerimus, ex hominibus, timemus turbam : omnes enim habebant Joannem sicut prophetam.
So their reply to Jesus was, 'We do not know.' And he retorted to them, 'Nor wil I tel you my authorityfor acting like this.'27 Et respondentes Jesu, dixerunt : Nescimus. Ait illis et ipse : Nec ego dico vobis in qua potestate hæc facio.
'What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He went and said to the first, "My boy, go and work inthe vineyard today."28 Quid autem vobis videtur ? Homo quidam habebat duos filios, et accedens ad primum, dixit : Fili, vade hodie, operare in vinea mea.
He answered, "I will not go," but afterwards thought better of it and went.29 Ille autem respondens, ait : Nolo. Postea autem, pœnitentia motus, abiit.
The man then went and said the same thing to the second who answered, "Certainly, sir," but did notgo.30 Accedens autem ad alterum, dixit similiter. At ille respondens, ait : Eo, domine, et non ivit :
Which of the two did the father's wil ?' They said, 'The first.' Jesus said to them, 'In truth I tel you, taxcol ectors and prostitutes are making their way into the kingdom of God before you.31 quis ex duobus fecit voluntatem patris ? Dicunt ei : Primus. Dicit illis Jesus : Amen dico vobis, quia publicani et meretrices præcedent vos in regnum Dei.
For John came to you, showing the way of uprightness, but you did not believe him, and yet the taxcol ectors and prostitutes did. Even after seeing that, you refused to think better of it and believe in him.32 Venit enim ad vos Joannes in via justitiæ, et non credidistis ei : publicani autem et meretrices crediderunt ei : vos autem videntes nec pœnitentiam habuistis postea, ut crederetis ei.
'Listen to another parable. There was a man, a landowner, who planted a vineyard; he fenced itround, dug a winepress in it and built a tower; then he leased it to tenants and went abroad.33 Aliam parabolam audite : Homo erat paterfamilias, qui plantavit vineam, et sepem circumdedit ei, et fodit in ea torcular, et ædificavit turrim, et locavit eam agricolis, et peregre profectus est.
When vintage time drew near he sent his servants to the tenants to col ect his produce.34 Cum autem tempus fructuum appropinquasset, misit servos suos ad agricolas, ut acciperent fructus ejus.
But the tenants seized his servants, thrashed one, kil ed another and stoned a third.35 Et agricolæ, apprehensis servis ejus, alium ceciderunt, alium occiderunt, alium vero lapidaverunt.
Next he sent some more servants, this time a larger number, and they dealt with them in the sameway.36 Iterum misit alios servos plures prioribus, et fecerunt illis similiter.
Final y he sent his son to them thinking, "They will respect my son."37 Novissime autem misit ad eos filium suum, dicens : Verebuntur filium meum.
But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, "This is the heir. Come on, let us kil himand take over his inheritance."38 Agricolæ autem videntes filium dixerunt intra se : Hic est hæres, venite, occidamus eum, et habebimus hæreditatem ejus.
So they seized him and threw him out of the vineyard and kil ed him.39 Et apprehensum eum ejecerunt extra vineam, et occiderunt.
Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?'40 Cum ergo venerit dominus vineæ, quid faciet agricolis illis ?
They answered, 'He will bring those wretches to a wretched end and lease the vineyard to othertenants who wil deliver the produce to him at the proper time.'41 Aiunt illi : Malos male perdet : et vineam suam locabit aliis agricolis, qui reddant ei fructum temporibus suis.
Jesus said to them, 'Have you never read in the scriptures: The stone which the builders rejected hasbecome the cornerstone; this is the Lord's doing and we marvel at it?42 Dicit illis Jesus : Numquam legistis in Scripturis : Lapidem quem reprobaverunt ædificantes,
hic factus est in caput anguli :
a Domino factum est istud,
et est mirabile in oculis nostris ?
'I tel you, then, that the kingdom of God wil be taken from you and given to a people who willproduce its fruit.'43 Ideo dico vobis, quia auferetur a vobis regnum Dei, et dabitur genti facienti fructus ejus.
44 Et qui ceciderit super lapidem istum, confringetur : super quem vero ceciderit, conteret eum.
When they heard his parables, the chief priests and the scribes realised he was speaking aboutthem,45 Et cum audissent principes sacerdotum et pharisæi parabolas ejus, cognoverunt quod de ipsis diceret.
but though they would have liked to arrest him they were afraid of the crowds, who looked on him asa prophet.46 Et quærentes eum tenere, timuerunt turbas : quoniam sicut prophetam eum habebant.
