NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 The Israelites, the whole community, arrived in the first month at the desert of Zin. The people settledat Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried.	1 Les Israélites, toute la communauté, arrivèrent le premier mois au désert de Cîn. Le peuples'établit à Cadès. C'est là que Miryam mourut et qu'elle fut enterrée.
2 There was no water for the community, so they banded together against Moses and Aaron.	2 Il n'y avait pas d'eau pour la communauté; alors ils s'ameutèrent contre Moïse et Aaron.
3 The people laid the blame on Moses. 'We would rather have died', they said, 'as our brothers diedbefore Yahweh!	3 Le peuple s'en prit à Moïse: "Que n'avons-nous péri, disaient-ils, comme nos frères ont péridevant Yahvé!
4 Why have you brought Yahweh's community into this desert, for us and our livestock to die here?	4 Pourquoi avez-vous conduit l'assemblée de Yahvé en ce désert, pour que nous y mourions, nouset nos bêtes?
5 Why did you lead us out of Egypt, only to bring us to this wretched place? It is a place unfit forsowing, it has no figs, no vines, no pomegranates, and there is not even water to drink!'	5 Pourquoi nous avoir fait monter d'Egypte pour nous conduire en ce sinistre lieu? C'est un lieuimpropre aux semailles, sans figuiers, ni vignes, ni grenadiers, sans même d'eau à boire!"
6 Leaving the assembly, Moses and Aaron went to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. They threwthemselves on their faces, and the glory of Yahweh appeared to them.	6 Quittant l'assemblée, Moïse et Aaron vinrent à l'entrée de la Tente du Rendez-vous. Ils tombèrentface contre terre, et la gloire de Yahvé leur apparut.
7 Yahweh then spoke to Moses and said,	7 Yahvé parla à Moïse et dit:
8 'Take the branch and call the community together, you and your brother Aaron. Then, in full view ofthem, order this rock to release its water. You wil release water from the rock for them and provide drink for thecommunity and their livestock.'	8 "Prends le rameau et rassemble la communauté, toi et ton frère Aaron. Puis, sous leurs yeux, ditesà ce rocher qu'il donne ses eaux. Tu feras jaillir pour eux de l'eau de ce rocher et tu feras boire la communauté etson bétail."
9 Moses took up the branch from before Yahweh, as he had directed him.	9 Moïse prit le rameau de devant Yahvé, comme il le lui avait commandé.
10 Moses and Aaron then cal ed the assembly together in front of the rock. He then said to them,'Listen now, you rebels. Shall we make water gush from this rock for you?'	10 Moïse et Aaron convoquèrent l'assemblée devant le rocher, puis il leur dit: "Ecoutez donc,rebelles. Ferons-nous jaillir pour vous de l'eau de ce rocher?"
11 Moses then raised his hand and struck the rock twice with the branch; water gushed out inabundance, and the community and their livestock drank.	11 Moïse leva la main et, avec le rameau, frappa le rocher par deux fois: l'eau jaillit en abondance,la communauté et son bétail purent boire.
12 Yahweh then said to Moses and Aaron, 'Because you did not believe that I could assert my holinessbefore the Israelites' eyes, you wil not lead this assembly into the country which I am giving them.'	12 Yahvé dit alors à Moïse et à Aaron: "Puisque vous ne m'avez pas cru capable de me sanctifieraux yeux des Israélites, vous ne ferez pas entrer cette assemblée dans le pays que je lui donne."
13 These were the Waters of Meribah, where the Israelites laid the blame on Yahweh and where, bytheir means, he asserted his holiness.	13 Ce sont là les eaux de Meriba, où les Israélites s'en prirent à Yahvé, et où il manifesta par ellessa sainteté.
14 Moses sent messengers from Kadesh: 'To the king of Edom. Your brother Israel says this: You areaware of the great hardships we have encountered.	14 Moïse envoya de Cadès des messagers: "Au roi d'Edom. Ainsi parle ton frère Israël. Tu sais, toi,quelles tribulations nous avons rencontrées.
15 Our ancestors went down to Egypt and there we stayed for a long time. But the Egyptians treated usbadly, as they had our ancestors.	15 Nos pères sont descendus en Egypte, où nous sommes restés bien des jours. Mais les Egyptiensnous ont maltraités, ainsi que nos pères.
16 When we appealed to Yahweh, he heard our cry and, sending an angel, brought us out of Egypt,and here we are, now, at Kadesh, a town on the borders of your territory.	16 Nous en avons appelé à Yahvé. Il a entendu notre voix et il a envoyé l'ange qui nous a fait sortird'Egypte. Nous voici maintenant à Cadès, ville qui est aux confins de ton territoire.
17 We ask permission to pass through your country. We shall not go through the fields or vineyards; weshall not drink the water from the wel s; we shal keep to the king's highway without turning to right or left until wehave passed through your territory.'	17 Nous voulons, s'il t'agrée, traverser ton pays. Nous n'irons pas à travers les champs ni les vignes;nous ne boirons pas l'eau des puits; nous suivrons la route royale sans nous écarter à droite ou à gauche, jusqu'àce que nous ayons traversé ton territoire."
18 To which, Edom replied, 'You wil not pass through my country; if you do, I shal oppose you by forceof arms.'	18 Edom lui répondit: "Tu ne passeras pas chez moi, sinon je marcherai en armes à ta rencontre."
19 To which the Israelites replied, 'We shal keep to the high road; if I and my flocks drink any of yourwater, I am wil ing to pay for it. Al I am asking is to pass through on foot.'	19 Les Israélites lui dirent: "Nous suivrons la grand-route; si nous buvons de ton eau, moi et mestroupeaux, j'en paierai le prix. Ce n'est pas une affaire que de me laisser passer à pied."
20 Edom replied: 'You shal not pass,' and Edom opposed them in great numbers and great force.	20 Edom répondit: "Tu ne passeras pas", et Edom marcha à sa rencontre en grand nombre et engrande force.
21 At Edom's refusal to grant Israel passage through his territory, Israel turned away.	21 Edom ayant ainsi refusé à Israël le passage sur son territoire, Israël s'en écarta.
22 They set out from Kadesh, and the Israelites, the whole community, came to Mount Hor.	22 Ils partirent de Cadès, et les Israélites, toute la communauté, arrivèrent à Hor-la-Montagne.
23 Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron at Mount Hor, on the frontier of Edom, and said,	23 Yahvé parla à Moïse et à Aaron, à Hor-la-Montagne, sur la frontière du pays d'Edom. Il dit:
24 'Aaron is to be gathered to his people; he will not enter the country which I have given to theIsraelites, since you both disobeyed my order at the Waters of Meribah.	24 "Qu'Aaron soit réuni aux siens: car il ne doit pas entrer dans le pays que je donne aux Israélites,puisque vous avez été rebelles à ma voix, aux eaux de Meriba.
25 Take Aaron and his son Eleazar and bring them up Mount Hor.	25 Prends Aaron et Eléazar, son fils, et fais-les monter sur la montagne de Hor.
26 Then take Aaron's robes off him and dress his son Eleazar in them. Aaron wil then be gathered tohis people; that is where he will die.'	26 Tu ôteras alors à Aaron ses vêtements, pour en revêtir Eléazar, son fils, et Aaron sera réuni auxsiens: c'est là qu'il doit mourir."
27 Moses did as Yahweh ordered. With the whole community watching, they went up Mount Hor.	27 Moïse fit ce que Yahvé avait ordonné. Sous les yeux de toute la communauté, ils montèrent surla montagne de Hor.
28 Moses took Aaron's robes off him and dressed his son Eleazar in them, and there Aaron died, onthe mountain-top. Moses and Eleazar then came back down the mountain.	28 Moïse ôta à Aaron ses vêtements pour en revêtir Eléazar, son fils; et Aaron mourut là, ausommet de la montagne. Puis Moïse et Eléazar redescendirent de la montagne.
29 The whole community saw that Aaron had died, and for thirty days the whole House of Israelmourned for Aaron.	29 Toute la communauté vit qu'Aaron avait expiré, et toute la maison d'Israël pleura Aaron pendant30 jours.
