Hosea 4

NEW JERUSALEM	NOVA VULGATA
1 Israelites, hear what Yahweh says, for Yahweh indicts the citizens of the country: there is no loyalty, nofaithful love, no knowledge of God in the country,	1 “ Audite verbum Domini, filii Israel, quia iudicium Domino cum habitatoribus terrae: non est enim veritas, et non est benignitas, et non est scientia Dei in terra;
2 only perjury and lying, murder, theft, adultery and violence, bloodshed after bloodshed.	2 maledictum et mendacium et homicidium et furtum et adulterium inundaverunt, et sanguis sanguinem tetigit.
3 This is why the country is in mourning and al its citizens pining away, the wild animals also and birds ofthe sky, even the fish in the sea wil disappear.	3 Propter hoc lugebit terra, et infirmabitur omnis, qui habitat in ea, cum bestia agri et volucre caeli, sed et pisces maris auferentur.
4 But let no one denounce, no one rebuke; it is you, priest, that I denounce.	4 Verumtamen non sit qui contendat nec qui arguat, sed tecum iudicium meum, sacerdos.
5 Priest, you wil stumble in broad daylight, and the prophet will stumble with you in the dark, and I wilmake your mother perish.	5 Et corrues plena die, et corruet etiam propheta tecum nocte; et perdam matrem tuam.
6 My people perish for want of knowledge. Since you yourself have rejected knowledge, so I shall rejectyou from my priesthood; since you have forgotten the teaching of your God, I in my turn shal forget yourchildren.	6 Perit populus meus, eo quod non habuerit scientiam. Quia tu scientiam reppulisti, repellam te, ne sacerdotio fungaris mihi; et quia oblitus es legis Dei tui, obliviscar filiorum tuorum et ego.
7 The more of them there have been, the more they have sinned against me; they have bartered theirGlory for Shame.	7 Secundum multitudinem eorum, sic peccaverunt mihi; gloriam eorum in ignominiam commutabo.
8 They feed on the sin of my people, they are greedy for their iniquity.	8 Peccatum populi mei comedunt et ad iniquitatem eorum sublevabunt animas eorum.
9 But as with the people, so with the priest, I shal punish them for their conduct, I shal pay them back fortheir deeds.	9 Et erit sicut populus sic sacerdos; et visitabo super eum vias eius et opera eius reddam ei.
10 They will eat but never be satisfied, they wil play the whore but not grow more prolific, since they havedeserted Yahweh to give themselves up	10 Et comedent et non saturabuntur; fornicabuntur et non multiplicabuntur, quoniam Dominum reliquerunt in non custodiendo.
11 to whoring. Old wine and new wine addle my people's wits,	11 Fornicatio et vinum et ebrietas auferunt cor.
12 they consult their block of wood, and their stick explains what they should do. For an urge to gowhoring has led them astray and whoring they go and desert their God;	12 Populus meus in ligno suo interrogat, et baculus eius annuntiat ei; spiritus enim fornicationum decepit eos, et fornicantur a Deo suo.
13 they offer sacrifice on the mountain tops, they burn incense on the hil s, under oak and poplar andterebinth, for pleasant is their shade. So, although your daughters play the whore and your daughters-in-lawcommit adultery,	13 Super capita montium sacrificant et super colles accendunt thymiama, subtus quercum et populum et terebinthum, quia bona est umbra eius; ideo fornicantur filiae vestrae, et sponsae vestrae adulterae sunt.
14 I shal not punish your daughters for playing the whore nor your daughters-in-law for committingadultery, when the men themselves are wandering off with whores and offering sacrifice with sacred prostitutes,for a people with no understanding is doomed.	14 Non visitabo super filias vestras, cum fuerint fornicatae, et super sponsas vestras, cum adulteraverint, quoniam hi ipsi cum meretricibus secedunt et cum prostibulis delubrorum sacrificant, et populus non intellegens corruet.
15 Though you, Israel, play the whore, there is no need for Judah to sin too. Do not go to Gilgal, do notgo up to Beth-Aven, do not swear oaths 'by Yahweh's life',	15 Si fornicaris tu, Israel, non delinquat saltem Iuda; et nolite ingredi in Galgala et ne ascenderitis in Bethaven neque iuraveritis: “Vivit Dominus”.
16 for Israel is as stubborn as a stubborn heifer; so is Yahweh likely to pasture him like a lamb in a broadmeadow?	16 Quoniam sicut vacca lasciviens Israel contumax est; nunc pascet eos Dominus quasi agnum in latitudine?
17 Ephraim has made a pact with idols- let him alone!	17 Particeps idolorum Ephraim, dimitte eum.
18 Their drunken orgy over, they do nothing but play the whore, preferring Shame to their Pride;	18 Transiit convivium eorum, fornicatione fornicati sunt, diligunt vehementer ignominiam impudicitiae.
19 the wind with its wings wil carry them off and their sacrifices wil bring them nothing but disgrace.	19 Ligabit spiritus eos in alis suis, et confundentur a sacrificiis suis.
