Hosea 4

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 Israelites, hear what Yahweh says, for Yahweh indicts the citizens of the country: there is no loyalty, nofaithful love, no knowledge of God in the country,	1 Écoutez la parole de Yahvé, fils d’Israël, car Yahvé est en procès avec les habitants du pays: il n’y a ni fidélité, ni bonté, ni connaissance de Dieu dans le pays.
2 only perjury and lying, murder, theft, adultery and violence, bloodshed after bloodshed.	2 On se parjure, on ment, on assassine et on vole, on commet l’adultère et on se livre à la violence; partout c’est le sang versé.
3 This is why the country is in mourning and al its citizens pining away, the wild animals also and birds ofthe sky, even the fish in the sea wil disappear.	3 Voilà pourquoi le pays est en deuil et tous ses habitants sont malades, jusqu’aux bêtes des champs et aux oiseaux du ciel, même les poissons de la mer disparaissent.
4 But let no one denounce, no one rebuke; it is you, priest, that I denounce.	4 Cependant, que personne ne se plaigne, que personne ne fasse de reproches, car c’est après toi, prêtre, que j’en ai.
5 Priest, you wil stumble in broad daylight, and the prophet will stumble with you in the dark, and I wilmake your mother perish.	5 Tu trébucheras en plein jour, le prophète aussi trébuchera avec toi dans la nuit, et je réduirai au silence tes oracles.
6 My people perish for want of knowledge. Since you yourself have rejected knowledge, so I shall rejectyou from my priesthood; since you have forgotten the teaching of your God, I in my turn shal forget yourchildren.	6 Mon peuple dépérit par faute de connaissance. Puisque tu as laissé se perdre la connaissance, je te ferai perdre mon sacerdoce; si toi tu as oublié l’enseignement de ton Dieu, moi j’oublierai tes fils.
7 The more of them there have been, the more they have sinned against me; they have bartered theirGlory for Shame.	7 Tous, ils ont péché contre moi, ils ont échangé leur gloire contre la honte.
8 They feed on the sin of my people, they are greedy for their iniquity.	8 Ils se nourrissent des sacrifices pour le péché de mon peuple: certainement ce péché ne leur déplaît pas.
9 But as with the people, so with the priest, I shal punish them for their conduct, I shal pay them back fortheir deeds.	9 Il en ira du prêtre comme du peuple, je le corrigerai pour sa conduite et lui ferai payer ce qu’il a fait.
10 They will eat but never be satisfied, they wil play the whore but not grow more prolific, since they havedeserted Yahweh to give themselves up	10 Ils mangeront mais ils auront encore faim, ils se prostitueront mais ils n’y gagneront rien, car ils ont cessé d’obéir à Yahvé.
11 to whoring. Old wine and new wine addle my people's wits,	11 La prostitution, le vin et l’alcool leur ont fait perdre la tête.
12 they consult their block of wood, and their stick explains what they should do. For an urge to gowhoring has led them astray and whoring they go and desert their God;	12 Mon peuple consulte un poteau de bois; c’est son bâton qui lui donne des conseils. Un esprit de prostitution les égare, ils se conduisent en adultères avec leur Dieu.
13 they offer sacrifice on the mountain tops, they burn incense on the hil s, under oak and poplar andterebinth, for pleasant is their shade. So, although your daughters play the whore and your daughters-in-lawcommit adultery,	13 Ils offrent des sacrifices sur le sommet des montagnes et font fumer l’encens sur les collines, sous un chêne, un peuplier ou un térébinthe, car leur ombrage est bon. C’est pourquoi, si vos filles se prostituent, si vos belles-filles commettent l’adultère,
14 I shal not punish your daughters for playing the whore nor your daughters-in-law for committingadultery, when the men themselves are wandering off with whores and offering sacrifice with sacred prostitutes,for a people with no understanding is doomed.	14 je ne punirai pas vos filles pour leurs prostitutions ou vos belles-filles pour leurs adultères, car vous-mêmes allez à l’écart avec les prostituées, vous offrez des sacrifices avec les prostitués sacrés. Ce peuple sans intelligence court à sa perte.
15 Though you, Israel, play the whore, there is no need for Judah to sin too. Do not go to Gilgal, do notgo up to Beth-Aven, do not swear oaths 'by Yahweh's life',	15 (Si toi, Israël, tu te prostitues, ce n’est pas une raison pour que Juda se rende coupable. N’allez pas à Guilgal, ne montez pas à Beth-Aven, ne jurez pas “Par la vie de Yahvé”.)
16 for Israel is as stubborn as a stubborn heifer; so is Yahweh likely to pasture him like a lamb in a broadmeadow?	16 Israël est pire qu’une vache obstinée: voudrait-on que Yahvé le fasse paître comme un agneau dans un pâturage?
17 Ephraim has made a pact with idols- let him alone!	17 Éphraïm est le complice des idoles, laissez-le!
18 Their drunken orgy over, they do nothing but play the whore, preferring Shame to their Pride;	18 À peine ont-ils fini de boire qu’ils se prostituent, ils préfèrent à leur Gloire la honteuse idole.
19 the wind with its wings wil carry them off and their sacrifices wil bring them nothing but disgrace.	19 Le vent l’emportera sur ses ailes et ils n’auront rien gagné avec leurs sacrifices.
