Daniel 1

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched onJerusalem and besieged it.	1 El año tercero del reinado de Yoyaquim, rey de Judá, Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, vino a Jerusalén y la sitió.
2 The Lord let Jehoiakim king of Judah fal into his power, as well as some of the vessels belonging to theTemple of God. These he took away to Shinar, putting the vessels into the treasury of his own gods.	2 El Señor entregó en sus manos a Yoyaquim rey de Judá, así como parte de los objetos de la Casa de Dios. El los llevó al país de Senaar y depositó los objetos en la casa del tesoro de sus dioses.
3 From the Israelites, the king ordered Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch, to bring a certain number of boys ofroyal or noble descent;	3 El rey mandó a Aspenaz, jefe de sus eunucos, tomar de entre los israelitas de estirpe real o de familia noble,
4 they had to be without any physical defect, of good appearance, versed in every branch of wisdom,wel -informed, discerning, suitable for service at the royal court. Ashpenaz was to teach them to speak and writethe language of the Chaldaeans.	4 algunos jóvenes, sin defecto corporal, de buen parecer, instruidos en toda sabiduría, cultos e inteligentes, idóneos para servir en la corte del rey, con el fin de enseñarles la escritura y la lengua de los caldeos.
5 The king assigned them a daily allowance of food and wine from the royal table. They were to receive an education lasting for three years, after which they would enter the royal service.	5 El rey les asignó una ración diaria de los manjares del rey y del vino de su mesa. Deberían ser educados durante tres años, después de lo cual entrarían al servicio del rey.
6 Among them were the Judaeans Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.	6 Entre ellos se encontraban Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías, que eran judíos.
7 The chief eunuch gave them other names, cal ing Daniel Belteshazzar, Hananiah Shadrach, MishaelMeshach, and Azariah Abed-Nego.	7 El jefe de los eunucos les puso nombres nuevos: Daniel se llamaría Beltsassar, Ananías Sadrak, Misael Mesak y Azarías Abed Negó.
8 Daniel, who was determined not to incur pol ution by food and wine from the royal table, begged thechief eunuch to spare him this defilement.	8 Daniel, que tenía el propósito de no mancharse compartiendo los manjares del rey y el vino de su mesa, pidió al jefe de los eunucos permiso para no mancharse.
9 God al owed Daniel to receive faithful love and sympathy from the chief eunuch.	9 Dios concedió a Daniel hallar gracia y benevolencia ante el jefe de los eunucos.
10 But the eunuch warned Daniel, 'I am afraid of my lord the king: he has assigned you food and drink,and if he sees you looking thinner in the face than the other boys of your age, my head wil be in danger with theking because of you.'	10 Pero el jefe de los eunucos dijo a Daniel: «Temo al rey, mi señor; él ha asignado vuestra comida y vuestra bebida, y si llega a ver vuestros rostros más macilentos que los de los jóvenes de vuestra edad, expondríais mi cabeza a los ojos del rey».
11 To the guard assigned to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah by the chief eunuch, Daniel thensaid,	11 Daniel dijo entonces al guarda a quien el jefe de los eunucos había confiado el cuidado de Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías:
12 'Please al ow your servants a ten days' trial, during which we are given only vegetables to eat andwater to drink.	12 «Por favor, pon a prueba a tus siervos durante diez días: que nos den de comer legumbres y de beber agua;
13 You can then compare our looks with those of the boys who eat the king's food; go by what you see,and treat your servants accordingly.'	13 después puedes comparar nuestro aspecto con el de los jóvenes que comen los manjares del rey, y hacer con tus siervos con arreglo a lo que hayas visto».
14 The man agreed to do what they asked and put them on ten days' trial.	14 Aceptó él la propuesta y les puso a prueba durante diez días.
15 When the ten days were over, they looked better and fatter than any of the boys who had eaten theiral owance from the royal table;	15 Al cabo de los diez días se vio que tenían mejor aspecto y estaban más rollizos que todos los jóvenes que comían los manjares del rey.
16 so the guard withdrew their al owance of food and the wine they were to drink, and gave themvegetables.	16 Desde entonces el guarda retiró sus manjares y el vino que tenían que beber, y les dio legumbres.
17 To these four boys God gave knowledge and skil in every aspect of literature and learning; Danielalso had the gift of interpreting every kind of vision and dream.	17 A estos cuatro jóvenes les concedió Dios ciencia e inteligencia en toda clase de letras y sabiduría. Particularmente Daniel poseía el discernimiento de visiones y sueños.
18 When the time stipulated by the king for the boys to be presented to him came round, the chiefeunuch presented them to Nebuchadnezzar.	18 Al cabo del tiempo establecido por el rey para que le fueran presentados los jóvenes, el jefe de los eunucos los llevó ante Nabucodonosor.
19 The king conversed with them, and among all the boys found none to equal Daniel, Hananiah, Mishaeland Azariah. So they became members of the king's court,	19 El rey conversó con ellos, y entre todos no se encontró ningún otro como Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías. Quedaron, pues, al servicio del rey.
20 and on whatever point of wisdom or understanding he might question them, he found them ten timesbetter than all the magicians and soothsayers in his entire kingdom. Daniel remained there until the first year ofKing Cyrus.	20 Y en cuantas cosas de sabiduría o de inteligencia les consultó el rey, los encontró diez veces superiores a todos los magos y adivinos que había en todo su reino.
	21 Daniel permaneció allí hasta el año primero del rey Ciro.
