NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
The word that came to Jeremiah for al the Judaeans living in Egypt, those, that is, living in Migdol,Tahpanhes, Noph and the territory of Pathros.1 Verbum, quod factum est per Ieremiam ad omnes Iudaeos, qui habitabant interra Aegypti, habitantes in Magdolo et in Taphnis et in Memphi et in terraPhatures, dicens:
'Yahweh Sabaoth, God of Israel, says this, "You have seen al the disaster I have brought onJerusalem and all the towns of Judah; today they lie in ruins and uninhabited.2 “ Haec dicit Dominus exercituum, Deus Israel: Vos vidistisomne malum istud, quod adduxi super Ierusalem et super omnes urbes Iudae; etecce desertae sunt hodie, et non est in eis habitator
This was because of the wicked deeds they committed to provoke my anger, by going and offeringincense and serving other gods whom neither they, nor you, nor your ancestors knew anything about,3 propter malitiam, quamfecerunt, ut me ad iracundiam provocarent et irent, ut sacrificarent et colerentdeos alienos, quos nesciebant et illi et vos et patres vestri.
although I urgently and untiringly sent you al my servants the prophets to say: You must not do thisloathsome thing, which I hate.4 Et misi ad vosomnes servos meos prophetas, de nocte consurgens mittensque et dicens: Nolitefacere verbum abominationis huiuscemodi, quam odivi.
But they would not listen or pay attention, and turn from their wickedness and stop offering incense toother gods.5 Et non audierunt necinclinaverunt aurem suam, ut converterentur a malis suis et non sacrificarentdiis alienis;
And so my furious anger overflowed, burning down the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem, which were reduced to ruins and wasteland, as they stil are today.6 et effusa est indignatio mea et furor meus et succensa est incivitatibus Iudae et in plateis Ierusalem, et versae sunt in solitudinem etvastitatem secundum diem hanc.
And now, Yahweh, God Sabaoth, God of Israel, says this: Why bring complete disaster on yourselvesby cutting yourselves off from Judah -- your men, women, children and babes in arms -- so as to leaveyourselves no remnant,7 Et nunc haec dicit Dominus exercituum, Deus Israel: Quare vos facitis malumgrande contra animas vestras, ut intereat ex vobis vir et mulier, parvulus etlactans de medio Iudae, nec relinquatur vobis quidquam residuum,
by provoking my wrath by your actions, offering incense to other gods in Egypt where you have cometo settle, as though bent on your own destruction and on becoming a curse and a laughing-stock for all thenations of the earth?8 provocantesme in operibus manuum vestrarum, sacrificando diis alienis in terra Aegypti, inquam ingressi estis, ut ibi peregrinemini, et dissipet vos, et sitis inmaledictionem et in opprobrium cunctis gentibus terrae?
Have you forgotten the wicked deeds of your ancestors, of the kings of Judah and of your princes, yourown wicked deeds and those of your wives, committed in the country of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?9 Numquid obliti estismala patrum vestrorum et mala regum Iudae et mala uxorum eius et mala vestra etmala uxorum vestrarum, quae fecerunt in terra Iudae et in plateis Ierusalem?
To this day they have felt neither contrition nor fear; they have not observed my Law or my statutes, which I prescribed for you, as for your ancestors.10 Non sunt contriti usque ad diem hanc et non timuerunt et non ambulaverunt inlege mea et in praeceptis meis, quae dedi coram vobis et coram patribus vestris.
So, Yahweh Sabaoth, God of Israel, says this: Look, I have determined on disaster and shal destroyJudah completely.11 Ideo haec dicit Dominus exercituum, Deus Israel: Ecce ego ponam faciem meamin vobis in malum et disperdam omnem Iudam.
I shal take the remnant of Judah who were determined to come to Egypt and settle there, and inEgypt they wil perish; they wil fal to the sword or perish of famine, from least to greatest; by sword and faminethey will die and be an object of execration and horror, a curse, a laughing-stock.12 Et assumam reliquias Iudae, quiposuerunt facies suas, ut ingrederentur terram Aegypti et peregrinarentur ibi,et consumentur omnes in terra Aegypti: cadent in gladio et in fame etconsumentur a minimo usque ad maximum, in gladio et in fame morientur; et eruntin exsecrationem et in stuporem et in maledictionem et in opprobrium.
I shal punish those who live in Egypt just as I punished Jerusalem: by sword, famine and plague.13 Etvisitabo super habitatores terrae Aegypti, sicut visitavi super Ierusalem, ingladio et in fame et in peste:
Of the remnant of Judah which has come to settle in Egypt, not a single one wil escape or survive toreturn to the country of Judah where they long to return and live. For none of them wil return, except a fewrefugees." '14 et non erit qui effugiat et sit residuus dereliquiis Iudaeorum, qui venerunt, ut peregrinarentur in terra Aegypti etreverterentur in terram Iudae, ad quam ipsi elevant animas suas, ut revertanturet habitent ibi; non revertentur, nisi qui fugerint ”.
At this, all the men who knew that their wives offered incense to other gods, and al the women whowere standing there, a great crowd (and al the people living in Egypt, in Pathros), answered Jeremiah asfol ows,15 Responderunt autem Ieremiae omnes viri, scientes quod sacrificarent uxoreseorum diis alienis, et universae mulieres, quarum stabat multitudo grandis, etomnis populus habitantium in terra Aegypti in Phatures, dicentes:
'We have no intention of listening to the word you have just spoken to us in Yahweh's name,16 “Sermonem, quem locutus es ad nos in nomine Domini, non audiemus ex te,
but intend to go on doing al we have vowed to do: offering incense to the Queen of Heaven andpouring libations in her honour, as we used to do, we and our ancestors, our kings and our chief men, in thetowns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem: we had food in plenty then, we lived well, we suffered no disasters.17 sedfacientes faciemus omne verbum, quod egressum est de ore nostro, ut sacrificemusreginae caeli et libemus ei libamina, sicut fecimus nos et patres nostri, regesnostri et principes nostri in urbibus Iudae et in plateis Ierusalem, et saturatisumus panibus et bene nobis erat malumque non vidimus.
But since we gave up offering incense to the Queen of Heaven and pouring libations in her honour,we have been destitute and have perished either by sword or by famine.18 Ex eo autem tempore, quo cessavimus sacrificare reginae caeli et libare ei libamina, indigemusomnibus et gladio et fame consumpti sumus.
Besides, when we offer incense to the Queen of Heaven and pour libations in her honour, do youthink we make cakes for her with her features on them, and pour libations to her, without our husbands'knowledge?'19 Quod si nos sacrificamus reginaecaeli et libamus ei libamina, numquid sine viris nostris fecimus ei placentas adeffingendum eam et libandum ei libamina? ”.
To al the people, men and women, all those who had made this answer, Jeremiah retorted,20 Et dixit Ieremias ad omnem populum, adversum viros et adversum mulieres etadversum universam plebem, qui responderant ei verbum, dicens:
'The incense you offered in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem, you, your ancestors, your kings, your chief men and the people at large -- was this not what Yahweh kept remembering, and found sorepellent21 “ Numquidnon sacrificium, quod sacrificastis in civitatibus Iudae et in plateisIerusalem, vos et patres vestri, reges vestri et principes vestri et populusterrae, horum recordatus est Dominus, et ascendit super cor eius?
that Yahweh could not endure your misdeeds and your loathsome practices any longer, with the resultthat your country has become the uninhabited ruin, the object of horror and cursing it is today?22 Et nonpoterat Dominus ultra portare propter malitiam operum vestrorum et propterabominationes, quas fecistis; et facta est terra vestra in desolationem et instuporem et in maledictum, eo quod non sit habitator, sicut est dies haec.
Because you offered incense, because you sinned against Yahweh, refusing to listen to the voice ofYahweh, or to observe his Law, his statutes and his decrees -- that is why the present disaster has overtakenyou.'23 Propterea quod sacrificaveritis et peccaveritis Domino et non audieritis vocemDomini et in lege et in praeceptis et in testimoniis eius non ambulaveritis, idcirco evenerunt vobis mala haec, sicut est dies haec ”.
Further, Jeremiah said to al the people, and particularly to al the women, 'Listen to the word ofYahweh, al you Judaeans in Egypt,24 Dixit autem Ieremias ad omnem populum et ad universas mulieres: “ Auditeverbum Domini, omnis Iuda, qui estis in terra Aegypti.
Yahweh Sabaoth, God of Israel, says this, "You and your wives, what your mouths promised, yourhands have indeed performed! You said: We shall punctiliously fulfil the vows we have made and offer incenseto the Queen of Heaven and pour libations in her honour. Very wel , keep your vows, perform them punctiliously!25 Haec dicit Dominusexercituum, Deus Israel, dicens: Vos et uxores vestrae locuti estis ore vestroet manibus vestris implestis dicentes: “Faciamus vota nostra, quae vovimus, utsacrificemus reginae caeli et libemus ei libamina”. Implete vota vestra etopere perpetrate ea.
But listen to the word of Yahweh, al you Judaeans living in Egypt: I swear by my great name, Yahwehsays, that my name wil no longer be uttered by any man of Judah throughout Egypt; no one wil say: As LordYahweh lives.26 Ideo audite verbum Domini, omnis Iuda, qui habitatis interra Aegypti: Ecce ego iuravi in nomine meo magno, ait Dominus, quia nequaquamultra vocabitur nomen meum ex ore omnis viri Iudae dicentis: “Vivit DominusDeus”, in omni terra Aegypti.
No, I am going to keep my eye on them for disaster, not for prosperity, and al the Judaeans in Egyptwil perish either by the sword or by famine until they are wiped out.27 Ecce ego vigilabo super eos in malum et nonin bonum, et consumentur omnes viri Iudae, qui sunt in terra Aegypti, gladio etfame, donec penitus consumantur.
Yet, though few in number, those who escape the sword wil return to the country of Judah fromEgypt. Then the entire remnant of Judah which has come and settled in Egypt wil know whose word comes true, mine or theirs.28 Et, qui fugerint gladium, revertentur deterra Aegypti in terram Iudae, viri pauci, et scient omnes reliquiae Iudae, quaeingressae sunt terram Aegypti, ut peregrinarentur ibi, cuius sermo compleatur, meus an illorum.
"And here is the sign for you, Yahweh declares, that I shal punish you in this place: so that you wilknow that the words with which I threaten you will come true:29 Et hoc vobis signum, ait Dominus, quod visitem ego super vos in loco isto, utsciatis quia vere complebuntur sermones mei contra vos in malum.
Yahweh says this: Look, I shal hand Pharaoh Hophra, king of Egypt, over to his enemies and to thosedetermined to kil him, just as I handed Zedekiah king of Judah over to his enemy Nebuchadnezzar king ofBabylon, who was determined to kil him." '30 Haec dicitDominus: Ecce ego tradam pharaonem Ophree, regem Aegypti, in manu inimicorumeius et in manu quaerentium animam illius, sicut tradidi Sedeciam regem Iudae inmanu Nabuchodonosor regis Babylonis inimici sui et quaerentis animam eius ”.
