Sirach 12

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA MARTINI
1 If you mean to do a kindness, choose the right person, then your good deeds wil not be wasted.	1 Se tu fai del bene, fa di sapere chi è quegli, a cui tu lo fai e ne' tuoi benefizj avrai molto merito.
2 Do good to someone devout, and you wil be rewarded, if not by that person, then certainly by the MostHigh.	2 Fa del bene al giusto, e ne avrai gran mercede, e se non da lui, certamente dal Signore.
3 No good will come to one who persists in evil, or who refuses to give alms.	3 Perocché non avrà bene chi fa sempre del male, e non fa limosina; perché l'Altissimo odia i peccatori, e usa misericordia con que', che fan penitenza.
4 Give to the devout, do not go to the help of a sinner.	4 Sii tu liberale coll'uomo misericordioso, e non accogliere il peccatore; perocché agli empj, ed ai peccatori Dio renderà il loro gastigo serbandogli al giorno della vendetta,
5 Do good to the humble, give nothing to the godless. Refuse him bread, do not give him any, it mightmake him stronger than you are; then you would be repaid evil twice over for al the good you had done him.	5 Sii liberale coll'uom dabbene, e non accogliere il peccatore.
6 For the Most High himself detests sinners, and wil repay the wicked with what they deserve.	6 Fa del bene all'umile, e non donare all'empio; impedisci, che siagli dato del pane, affinchè con questo egli non ti soverchi:
7 Give to the good, and do not go to the help of a sinner.	7 Perocché tu troverai doppio male per tutto il bene, che gli farai; perché e l'Altissimo odia i peccatori, e farà vendetta contro degli empj.
8 In prosperity you cannot always tel a true friend, but in adversity you cannot mistake an enemy.	8 Non si conosce l'amico nella prosperità: e non resterà celato il nemico nell'avversità.
9 When someone is doing well that person's enemies are sad, when someone is doing badly, even afriend wil keep at a distance.	9 Quando l'uomo è in prosperità, i suoi nemici sono malinconici; e quand'egli è nell'avversità, si conosce chi è suo amico.
10 Do not ever trust an enemy; as bronze tarnishes, so does an enemy's malice.	10 Non ti fidare del tuo nemico giammai; perocché la malizia di lui è come un vaso di rame, che fa la ruggine.
11 Even if he behaves humbly and comes bowing and scraping, maintain your reserve and be on yourguard against him. Behave towards him as if you were polishing a mirror, you will find that his tarnish cannot last.	11 E se egli si umilia, e si incurva, sta attento, e guardati da lui.
12 Do not stand him beside you in case he thrusts you out and takes your place. Do not seat him on yourright, or he will be after your position, and then you wil remember what I have said and sadly admit that I wasright.	12 Non te lo mettere accanto, e non sieda egli alla tua destra, affinchè non avvenga, che rivoltosi egli contro di te cerchi di prendere il tuo posto, onde alla fine tu abbi a capire le mie parole, e li miei avvertimenti ti trafiggano.
13 Who feels sorry for a snake-charmer bitten by a snake, or for those who take risks with savageanimals? -	13 Chi avrà misericordia dell'incantatore ferito dal serpente, e di tutti quelli, che si accostano alle fiere? cosi sarà di chi si accompagna con un iniquo, e si trova involto ne' peccati di lui.
14 just so for one who consorts with a sinner, and becomes an accomplice in his sins.	14 Per un ora si starà egli con te; ma se tu anderai in declinazione, non reggerà.
15 He wil stay with you for a while, but if you once give way he wil press his advantage.	15 Il nimico ha il miele sulle sue labbra; ma in cuor suo va macchinando per condurti nella fossa.
16 An enemy may have sweetness on his lips, and in his heart a scheme to throw you into the ditch. Anenemy may have tears in his eyes, but if he gets a chance there can never be too much blood for him.	16 Piange per gli occhi fuor il nimico; ma se trova l'occasione egli sarà sempre sitibondo di sangue:
17 If you meet with misfortune, you will find him there before you, and, pretending to help you, he wil tripyou up.	17 E se ti succederà del male, troverai, che egli ne sarà il primo autore.
18 He wil wag his head and clap his hands, he wil whisper a lot and his expression wil change.	18 Piange per gli occhi fuor il nemico, e, come per darti ajuto, darà a' tuoi piedi la spinta.
	19 Scuoterà il capo, e batterà palma a palma, e masticando molte cose, cangerà di viso.
