1 It was Wisdom who protected the first man to be fashioned, the father of the world, who had beencreated al alone, she it was who rescued him from his fal	1 La sapienza custodi colui che da Dio fu fatto il primo, come padre del mondo, essendo stato crea­to solo,
2 and gave him the strength to subjugate al things.	2 essa lo trasse fuori dal suo peccato e gli diede il potere di governare tutte le cose.
3 But when in his wrath a wicked man deserted her, he perished in his fratricidal fury.	3 Appena l'empio nella sua collera s'al­lontanò da lei, perì pel furore fra­tricida.
4 When because of him the earth was drowned, it was Wisdom again who saved it, piloting the uprightman on valueless timber.	4 E quando a cagione di lui le acque sommersero la terra, di nuovo la salvò la sapienza, gui­dando il giusto su misero legno.
5 Again, when, concurring in wickedness, the nations had been thrown into confusion, she singled outthe upright man, preserved him blameless before God and fortified him against pity for his child.	5 Essa, quando le nazioni di co­mune accordo si abbandonarono ad male, distinse il giusto, lo rese irreprensibile davanti a Dio, e lo mantenne forte contro la com­passione verso il figlio.
6 She it was who, while the godless perished, saved the upright man as he fled from the fire rainingdown on the Five Cities,	6 Essa li­berò il giusto che fuggiva dallo sterminio degli empi, mentre il fuoco scendeva, sulla Pentapoli.
7 in witness against whose evil ways a desolate land still smokes, where plants bear fruit that neverripens and where, monument to an unbelieving soul, there stands a pillar of salt.	7 Come testimonianza della loro malvagità rimane una terra deso­lata e fumante, con alberi che dànno frutti immaturi, e per ri­cordare un'anima incredula re­sta una statua di sale.
8 For, by ignoring the path of Wisdom, not only did they suffer the loss of not knowing the good, but theyleft the world a memorial to their fol y, so that their offences could not pass unnoticed.	8 Quelli che non si curaron della sapienza non solo caddero nell'ignoranza del bene, ma lasciarono agli uomini un ricordo della loro stoltezza, in modo che non potessero restare nascosti i loro peccati.
9 But Wisdom delivered her servants from their ordeals.	9 La sa­pienza invece liberò dal dolore quelli che la onorano.
10 The upright man, fleeing from the anger of his brother, was led by her along straight paths. Sheshowed him the kingdom of God and taught him the knowledge of holy things. She brought him success in hislabours and gave him ful return for all his efforts;	10 Essa guidò per dritte vie il giusto che fug­giva l'ira del fratello, gli mostrò il regno di Dio, gli diede la scien­za delle cose sante, lo arricchì nelle fatiche, ne rese pieni di frut­ti i faticosi lavori.
11 she stood by him against grasping and oppressive men and she made him rich.	11 Lo assistè tra le frodi di chi lo metteva in mezzo e lo fece ricco.
12 She preserved him from his enemies and saved him from the traps they set for him. In an arduousstruggle she awarded him the prize, to teach him that piety is stronger than al .	12 Lo guardò dai nemici, lo protesse dalle in­ sidie, gli diede di vincere l'aspra lotta, in modo da fargli sapere che la sapienza trionfa di tutto.
13 She did not forsake the upright man when he was sold, but snatched him away from sin;	13 Essa non abbandonò il giusto venduto, ma lo salvò dai pecca­tori, e con lui discese nella fossa.
14 she accompanied him down into the pit, nor did she abandon him in his chains until she had broughthim the sceptre of a kingdom and authority over his despotic masters, thus exposing as liars those who hadtraduced him, and giving him honour everlasting.	14 Ed anche nelle catene non lo lasciò, finché non gli ebbe porta­ lo lo scettro del regno e il potere contro coloro che l'opprimevano: mostrò bugiardi i suoi accusatori e gli procurò eterna gloria.
15 It was Wisdom who delivered a holy people, a blameless race, from a nation of oppressors.	15 Essa liberò il popolo giusto, la stirpe irreprensibile dalle na­zioni che l'opprimevano,
16 She entered the soul of a servant of the Lord, and withstood fearsome kings with wonders and signs.	16 entrò nell'anima del servo di Dio, e con prodigi e segni tenne testa a or­ rendi tiranni
17 To the holy people she gave the wages of their labours; she guided them by a marvellous road,herself their shelter by day -- and their starlight through the night.	17 e diede ai giusti la mercede delle loro fatiche, li condusse per vie maravigliose, e fu per essi come ombra di gior­no e come luce delle stelle du­rante la notte.
18 She brought them across the Red Sea, leading them through an immensity of water,	18 Fece loro pas­sare il Mar Rosso, li menò attra­verso acque profonde,
19 whereas she drowned their enemies, then spat them out from the depths of the abyss.	19 sommer­se nel mare i loro nemici, li fece rigurgitare dal profondo dell'a­bisso. Così i giusti tolsero le spo­glie degli empi
20 So the upright despoiled the godless; Lord, they extol ed your holy name, and with one accordpraised your protecting hand;	20 e celebrarono, o Signore, il tuo santo nome, e cantarono insieme inni alla vit­toriosa tua mano.
21 for Wisdom opened the mouths of the dumb and made eloquent the tongues of babes.	21 Perchè la sa­pienza aperse la bocca dei muti e rese eloquenti le bocche dei fanciulli.
