NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 It was Wisdom who protected the first man to be fashioned, the father of the world, who had beencreated al alone, she it was who rescued him from his fal	1 Essa custodì il primo uomo, il padre del mondo, quando fu creato solo, lo liberò dalla sua caduta
2 and gave him the strength to subjugate al things.	2 e gli diede il potere di dominare su tutte le cose.
3 But when in his wrath a wicked man deserted her, he perished in his fratricidal fury.	3 Ma un ingiusto, che nella sua ira si era allontanato da essa, perì per i suoi furori fratricidi.
4 When because of him the earth was drowned, it was Wisdom again who saved it, piloting the uprightman on valueless timber.	4 Quando la terra fu sommersa per colpa sua, la sapienza la salvò di nuovo guidando il giusto per mezzo di un fragile legno.
5 Again, when, concurring in wickedness, the nations had been thrown into confusion, she singled outthe upright man, preserved him blameless before God and fortified him against pity for his child.	5 Quando le genti furono confuse per la loro concordia nella malvagità, essa conobbe il giusto, lo conservò irreprensibile davanti a Dio e lo mantenne forte, al di sopra dell'affetto per il figlio.
6 She it was who, while the godless perished, saved the upright man as he fled from the fire rainingdown on the Five Cities,	6 Essa liberò dallo sterminio degli empi un giusto che fuggiva il fuoco disceso sulla Pentapoli.
7 in witness against whose evil ways a desolate land still smokes, where plants bear fruit that neverripens and where, monument to an unbelieving soul, there stands a pillar of salt.	7 A testimonianza di quella malvagità resta ancora una terra fumante e delle piante che producono frutti immaturi; a ricordo di un'anima incredula sta una colonna di sale.
8 For, by ignoring the path of Wisdom, not only did they suffer the loss of not knowing the good, but theyleft the world a memorial to their fol y, so that their offences could not pass unnoticed.	8 Avendo abbandonato la sapienza, non solo subirono il danno di non conoscere il bene, ma lasciarono ai viventi un ricordo di insipienza, perché non potessero nascondersi nelle cose in cui caddero.
9 But Wisdom delivered her servants from their ordeals.	9 Ma la sapienza liberò i suoi fedeli dai travagli.
10 The upright man, fleeing from the anger of his brother, was led by her along straight paths. Sheshowed him the kingdom of God and taught him the knowledge of holy things. She brought him success in hislabours and gave him ful return for all his efforts;	10 Essa guidò per vie diritte il giusto, che fuggiva dall'ira del fratello, gli mostrò il regno di Dio e gli diede la conoscenza delle cose sante; lo fece prosperare nelle fatiche e moltiplicò i suoi guadagni.
11 she stood by him against grasping and oppressive men and she made him rich.	11 Lo assistette contro l'ingordigia degli oppressori e lo fece ricco;
12 She preserved him from his enemies and saved him from the traps they set for him. In an arduousstruggle she awarded him the prize, to teach him that piety is stronger than al .	12 lo custodì dai nemici, lo difese da quanti lo insidiavano e gli assegnò il premio di un aspro combattimento, perché conoscesse che più potente di tutto è la pietà.
13 She did not forsake the upright man when he was sold, but snatched him away from sin;	13 Essa non abbandonò il giusto venduto, ma lo preservò dal peccato.
14 she accompanied him down into the pit, nor did she abandon him in his chains until she had broughthim the sceptre of a kingdom and authority over his despotic masters, thus exposing as liars those who hadtraduced him, and giving him honour everlasting.	14 Scese con lui nel carcere e non lo abbandonò nelle catene, finché gli procurò lo scettro regale e autorità sui suoi oppressori; svelò come falsi quanti lo diffamavano e gli diede una gloria eterna.
15 It was Wisdom who delivered a holy people, a blameless race, from a nation of oppressors.	15 Essa liberò un popolo santo e un seme irreprensibile da una nazione di oppressori.
16 She entered the soul of a servant of the Lord, and withstood fearsome kings with wonders and signs.	16 Entrò nell'anima di un servo del Signore, e con portenti e segni si levò contro re terribili.
17 To the holy people she gave the wages of their labours; she guided them by a marvellous road,herself their shelter by day -- and their starlight through the night.	17 Rese ai santi il premio delle loro fatiche, li guidò per una via meravigliosa, divenne per loro un riparo di giorno e una luce di astri nella notte.
18 She brought them across the Red Sea, leading them through an immensity of water,	18 Fece loro passare il Mar Rosso e li condusse attraverso molte acque;
19 whereas she drowned their enemies, then spat them out from the depths of the abyss.	19 sommerse invece i loro nemici e li vomitò dal profondo dell'abisso.
20 So the upright despoiled the godless; Lord, they extol ed your holy name, and with one accordpraised your protecting hand;	20 Per questo i giusti spogliarono gli empi, celebrarono, Signore, il tuo santo nome e unanimi lodarono la tua mano protettrice;
21 for Wisdom opened the mouths of the dumb and made eloquent the tongues of babes.	21 perché la sapienza aprì la bocca dei muti e sciolse la lingua dei fanciulli.
