NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
Al eluia! Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, his faithful love is everlasting!1 Alleluia. Give glory to the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Who can recount al Yahweh's triumphs, who can ful y voice his praise?2 Who shall declare the powers of the Lord? who shall set forth all his praises?
How blessed are those who keep to what is just, whose conduct is always upright!3 Blessed are they that keep judgment, and do justice at all times.
Remember me, Yahweh, in your love for your people. Come near to me with your saving power,4 Remember us, O Lord, in the favour of thy people: visit us with thy salvation.
let me share the happiness of your chosen ones, let me share the joy of your people, the pride ofyour heritage.5 That we may see the good of thy chosen, that we may rejoice in the joy of thy nation: that thou mayst be praised with thy inheritance.
Like our ancestors, we have sinned, we have acted wickedly, guiltily;6 We have sinned with our fathers: we have acted unjustly, we have wrought iniquity.
our ancestors in Egypt never grasped the meaning of your wonders. They did not bear in mind yourcountless acts of love, at the Sea of Reeds they defied the Most High;7 Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt: they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies: And they provoked to wrath going up to the sea, even the Red Sea.
but for the sake of his name he saved them, to make known his mighty power.8 And he saved them for his own name's sake: that he might make his power known.
At his rebuke the Sea of Reeds dried up, he let them pass through the deep as though it were desert,9 And he rebuked the Red Sea, and it was dried up: and he led them through the depths, as in a wilderness.
so he saved them from their opponents' clutches, rescued them from the clutches of their enemies.10 And he saved them from the hand of them that hated them: and he redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.
The waters enveloped their enemies, not one of whom was left.11 And the water covered them that afflicted them: there was not one of them left.
Then they believed what he had said, and sang his praises.12 And they believed his words: and they sang his praises.
But they soon forgot his achievements, they did not even wait for his plans;13 They had quickly done, they forgot his works: and they waited not for his counsels.
they were overwhelmed with greed in the wastelands, in the solitary wastes they challenged God.14 And they coveted their desire in the desert: and they tempted God in the place without water.
He gave them al they asked for, but struck them with a deep wasting sickness;15 And he gave them their request: and sent fulness into their souls.
in the camp they grew jealous of Moses, and of Aaron, Yahweh's holy one.16 And they provoked Moses in the camp, Aaron the holy one of the Lord.
The earth opened and swal owed up Dathan, closed in on Abiram's faction;17 The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan: and covered the congregation of Abiron.
fire flamed out against their faction, the renegades were engulfed in flames.18 And a fire was kindled in their congregation: the flame burned the wicked.
At Horeb they made a calf, bowed low before cast metal;19 They made also a calf in Horeb: and they adored the graven thing.
they exchanged their glory for the image of a grass-eating bull.20 And they changed their glory into the likeness of a calf that eateth grass.
They forgot the God who was saving them, who had done great deeds in Egypt,21 They forgot God, who saved them, who had done great things in Egypt,
such wonders in the land of Ham, such awesome deeds at the Sea of Reeds.22 wondrous works in the land of Cham: terrible things in the Red Sea.
He thought of putting an end to them, had not Moses, his chosen one, taken a stand in the breachand confronted him, to turn his anger away from destroying them.23 And he said that he would destroy them: had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach: To turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them.
They counted a desirable land for nothing, they put no trust in his promise;24 And they set at nought the desirable land. They believed not his word,
they stayed in their tents and grumbled, they would not listen to Yahweh's voice.25 and they murmured in their tents: they hearkened not to the voice of the Lord.
So he lifted his hand against them, to strike them down in the desert,26 And he lifted up his hand over them: to overthrow them in the desert;
to strike down their descendants among the nations, to scatter them al over the world.27 And to cast down their seed among the nations, and to scatter them in the countries.
They committed themselves to serve Baal-Peor, and ate sacrifices made to lifeless gods.28 They also were initiated to Beelphegor: and ate the sacrifices of the dead.
They so provoked him by their actions that a plague broke out among them.29 And they provoked him with their inventions: and destruction was multiplied among them.
Then up stood Phinehas to intervene, and the plague was checked;30 Then Phinees stood up, and pacified him: and the slaughter ceased.
for this he is the example of uprightness, from age to age for ever.31 And it was reputed to him unto justice, to generation and generation for evermore.
At the waters of Meribah they so angered Yahweh, that Moses suffered on their account,32 They provoked him also at the waters of contradiction: and Moses was afflicted for their sakes:
for they had embittered his spirit, and he spoke without due thought.33 because they exasperated his spirit. And he distinguished with his lips.
They did not destroy the nations, as Yahweh had told them to do,34 They did not destroy the nations of which the Lord spoke unto them.
but intermarried with them, and adopted their ways.35 And they were mingled among the heathens, and learned their works:
They worshipped those nations' false gods, til they found themselves entrapped,36 and served their idols, and it became a stumblingblock to them.
and sacrificed their own sons and their daughters to demons.37 And they sacrificed their sons, and their daughters to devils.
Innocent blood they shed, the blood of their sons and daughters; offering them to the idols ofCanaan, they pol uted the country with blood.38 And they shed innocent blood: the blood of their sons and of their daughters which they sacrificed to the idols of Chanaan. And the land was polluted with blood,
They defiled themselves by such actions, their behaviour was that of a harlot.39 and was defiled with their works: and they went aside after their own inventions.
Yahweh's anger blazed out at his people, his own heritage fil ed him with disgust.40 And the Lord was exceedingly angry with his people: and he abhorred his inheritance.
He handed them over to the nations, and their opponents became their masters;41 And he delivered them into the hands of the nations: and they that hated them had dominion over them.
their enemies lorded it over them, crushing them under their rule.42 And their enemies afflicted them: and they were humbled under their hands:
Time and again he rescued them, but they stil defied him deliberately, and sank ever deeper in theirguilt;43 many times did he deliver them. But they provoked him with their counsel: and they were brought low by their iniquities.
even so he took pity on their distress, as soon as he heard them cry out.44 And he saw when they were in tribulation: and he heard their prayer.
Bearing his covenant with them in mind, he relented in his boundless and faithful love;45 And he was mindful of his covenant: and repented according to the multitude of his mercies.
he ensured that they received compassion, in their treatment by al their captors.46 And he gave them unto mercies, in the sight of all those that had made them captives.
Save us, Yahweh our God, gather us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holyname, and may glory in praising you.47 Save us, O Lord, our God: and gather us from among nations: That we may give thanks to thy holy name, and may glory in thy praise.
Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel, from all eternity and for ever! Let all the people say, 'Amen'.48 Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting: and let all the people say: So be it, so be it.
