1 The Simon mentioned above as the informer against the funds and against his country beganslandering Onias, insinuating that the latter had been responsible for the assault on Heliodorus and himself hadcontrived this misfortune.	1 Ma il già detto Simone, che aveva in danno della patria dato l'indizio di quel tesoro, parlava male di Onia, come se egli avesse istigato Eliodoro a far tali cose, e fosse egli stato la cagione del male:
2 Simon now had the effrontery to name this benefactor of the city, this protector of his compatriots, thiszealot for the laws, as an enemy of the public good.	2 E al protettore della città, al difensore della nazione, allo zelator della legge divina ardiva di apporre, che macchinasse contro del regno.
3 This hostility reached such proportions that murders were actual y committed by some of Simon'sagents,	3 Ma avanzandosi i dissapori fino a tal segno, che da alcuni degli amici di Simone si facevano delle uccisioni,

6 He saw that, without some intervention by the king, an orderly administration would no longer bepossible, nor would Simon put a stop to his fol y.	6 Perocché egli vedeva, che sènza la previdenza del re non era possibile di rimettere le cose in calma, nè che Simone ponesse fine alle sue avventaggini.
7 When Seleucus had departed this life and Antiochus styled Epiphanes had succeeded to the kingdom,Jason, brother of Onias, usurped the high priesthood:	7 Ma morto Seleuco, essendo a lui succeduto Antioco soprannominato Epifane, Giasone fratello di Onia ambiva il ponteficato:
8 he approached the king with a promise of three hundred and sixty talents of silver, with eighty talents tocome from some other source of revenue.	8 E ito a trovare il re gli promise trecento sessanta talenti, e altri ottanta talenti per altri titoli,
9 He further committed himself to paying another hundred and fifty, if the king would empower him to setup a gymnasium and youth centre, and to register the Antiochists of Jerusalem.	9 E oltre a ciò altri cento cinquanta ne prometteva per la permissione di fondare un ginnasio, e un efebio, e per dare a quei di Gerusalemme la cittadinanza di Antiochia.
10 When the king gave his assent, Jason, as soon as he had seized power, imposed the Greek way oflife on his fel ow-countrymen.	10 La qual cosa essendo a lui conceduta dal re, e avendo egli conseguito il principato, cominciò subito a far prendere a' suoi nazionali i costumi gentileschi:
11 He suppressed the liberties which the kings had graciously granted to the Jews at the instance ofJohn, father of that Eupolemus who was later to be sent on an embassy to negotiate a treaty of friendship andal iance with the Romans and, overthrowing the lawful institutions, introduced new usages contrary to the Law.	11 E tolta via la maniera di vivere approvata dalla umanità dei re in favor de' Giudei, mediante gli ufficj di Giovanni padre di Eupolemo (il quale fu poi mandato pubblico Ambasciadore a Roma a rinnovare la confederazione, e l'amicizia) egli distruggendo i diritti de' cittadini stabiliva leggi perverse.
12 He went so far as to found a gymnasium at the very foot of the Citadel, and to fit out the noblest of hisyoung men in the petasos.	12 Imperocché ebbe ardimento di fondare sotto la stessa cittadella un ginnasio, e di mettere ne' lupanari il fior della gioventù.
13 Godless wretch that he was and no true high priest, Jason set no bounds to his impiety; indeed thehellenising process reached such a pitch	13 Ed era questo non un principio, ma un avanzamento, e progresso della maniera di vivere gentilesca, e straniera introdotta con infame, e inaudita malvagità dal non sacerdote, ma empio Giasone:
14 that the priests ceased to show any interest in serving the altar; but, scorning the Temple andneglecting the sacrifices, they would hurry, on the stroke of the gong, to take part in the distribution, forbidden bythe Law, of the oil on the exercise ground;	14 Onde avvenne, che i sacerdoti non erano più intenti al ministero dell'altare, ma disprezzato il tempio, e messi in non cale i sagrifizj, correvano alla palestra, e ai premj indegni, e ad esercitarsi al disco.
15 setting no store by the honours of their fatherland, they esteemed hel enic glories best of al .	15 E non facendo verun conto di quel, che era in pregio tra i padri loro, migliori stimavano le glorie della Grecia:
16 But al this brought its own retribution; the very people whose way of life they envied, whom theysought to resemble in everything, proved to be their enemies and executioners.	16 Delle quali l'acquisto si disputavan tra loro non senza pericolo, e le usanze di quelli emulavano, e a quelli volevano in tutto esser simili, i quali erano stati loro nemici, e distruttori.
17 It is no smal thing to violate the divine laws, as the period that fol owed wil demonstrate.	17 Imperocché non rimane senza gastigo l'operare empiamente contro le leggi divine: ma ciò verrà in chiaro ne' tempi che sieguono.
18 On the occasion of the quadrennial games at Tyre in the presence of the king,	18 Ma celebrandosi a Tiro i giuochi quinquennali, ed essendovi presente il re,
19 the vile Jason sent an embassy of Antiochists from Jerusalem, taking with them three hundred silverdrachmas for the sacrifice to Hercules. But even those who brought the money did not think it would be right tospend it on the sacrifice and decided to reserve it for some other item of expenditure;	19 Mandò il facinoroso Giasone da Gerusalemme uomini perversi a portare trecento di dramme d'argento pel sagrifizio d'Ercole; ma quelli, che le portavano chiesero, che non si spendessero pè sagrifizj, perché ciò non era conveniente, ma si impiegassero in altri usi.
20 and so what the sender had intended for the sacrifice to Hercules was in fact applied, at thesuggestion of those who brought it, to the construction of triremes.	20 Onde veramente dal donatore furono offerte pel sagrifizio di Ercole; ma in grazia dei latori furono impiegate nella fabbrica delle triremi.
21 Apollonius son of Menestheus had been sent to Egypt to attend the wedding of King Philometor.Antiochus, having learnt that the latter had become hostile to his affairs, began thinking about his own safety:that was why he had come to Joppa. He then moved to Jerusalem,	21 Ma Antioco avendo spedito in Egitto Apollonio figliuolo di Mnesteo a trattare co' grandi della corte del re Tolomeo Filometore, vergendo come era stato escluso dagli affari di quel regno, pensando a' proprj vantaggi, si parti di là, e andò a Joppe, e indi a Gerusalemme.
22 where he was given a magnificent welcome by Jason and the city, and escorted in by torchlight withacclamation. After which, he marched his army into Phoenicia.	22 E accolto grandiosamente da Giasone, e dalla città, vi entrò a lumi accesi, in mezzo ai canti; e indi tornò coll'esercito nella Fenicia.
23 When three years had passed, Jason sent Menelaus, brother of the Simon mentioned above, toconvey the money to the king and to complete negotiations on various essential matters.	23 Tre anni dopo Giasone mandò Menelao fratello del mentovato Simone a portar denari al re, e riportarne gli ordini sopra altari di importanza.
24 But Menelaus, on being presented to the king, flattered him by his own appearance of authority, andso secured the high priesthood for himself, outbidding Jason by three hundred talents of silver.	24 Ma quegli acquistatosi il favore del re coll'esaltare la sua potenza tirò a se il sommo Sacerdozio, dando trecento talenti d'argento più di Giasone.
25 He returned with the royal mandate, bringing nothing worthy of the high priesthood and supportedonly by the fury of a cruel tyrant and the rage of a savage beast.	25 E ricevuti gli ordini del re se ne tornò. Or ei nulla aveva che fosse degno del sacerdozio, ma portava un cuor di tiranno crudele, e la rabbia di una fiera selvaggia.
26 Thus Jason, who had supplanted his own brother, was in turn supplanted by a third, and obliged totake refuge in Ammanitis.	26 E Giasone, che avea tradito il proprio fratello, ingannato egli stesso fu cacciato esule nel paese degli Ammoniti.

28 although Sostratus, the commandant of the Citadel, whose business it was to collect the revenue,kept demanding payment. The pair of them in consequence were summoned before the king,	28 (Perocché a lui spettava l'esigere i tributi): e furono perciò ambedue chiamati a comparire dinanzi al re.
29 Menelaus leaving his brother Lysimachus as deputy high priest, while Sostratus left Crates, thecommander of the Cypriots, to act for him.	29 E Menelao fu deposto dal ponteficato, nel quale ebbe per successore Lisimaco suo fratello; e Sostrato fu mandato al governo di Cipro.
30 While al this was going on, it happened that the people of Tarsus and Mal us revolted, because theirtowns had been given as a present to Antiochis, the king's concubine.	30 Or mentre succedevano queste cose accadde, che quei di Tharso, e quelli di Mallo si mossero a sedizione, perché erano stati soggettati ad Antiochide concubina del re.
31 The king therefore hurried off to settle the affair, leaving Andronicus, one of his dignitaries, to act ashis deputy.	31 Onde il re si mosse in fretta per sedarli, lasciando a far le sue veci Andronico, uno de' suoi amici.
32 Thinking he had found a favourable opportunity, Menelaus abstracted a number of golden vesselsfrom the Temple and presented them to Andronicus, and managed to sel others to Tyre and the surroundingcities.	32 Allora Menelao persuaso, che quello fosse il tempo per lui, rubati alcuni vasi di oro dal tempio, ne fece dono ad Andronico, avendone venduti degli altri in Tiro, e nelle vicine città.
33 On receiving clear evidence to this effect, Onias retired to a place of sanctuary at Daphne nearAntioch and then taxed him with it.	33 Della qual cosa avendo avuta Onia sicura notizia, ne fece rimproveri a lui, tenendosi egli però in Antiochia, in luogo sicuro presso Daphne.
34 Menelaus then had a quiet word with Andronicus, urging him to get rid of Onias. Andronicus soughtout Onias and, resorting to the trick of offering him his right hand on oath, succeeded in persuading him, despitethe latter's lingering suspicions, to leave sanctuary; whereupon, in defiance of al justice, he immediately put himto death.	34 Per la qual cosa Menelao andò a trovar Andronico, pregandolo di far uccidere Onia. E quegli fece visita ad Onia, e presolo per mano, e giuratagli fede lo indusse (benché ei non se ne fidasse interamente) a uscir dell'asilo, e subito senza alcun riguardo per la giustizia, lo uccise.
35 The result was that not only Jews but many people of other nationalities were appalled and outragedby the unjust murder of this man.	35 Per la qual cosa non solo i Giudei, ma anche le altre nazioni furono scandalizzate, e commosse per la ingiusta morte di sì grand' uomo.
36 On the king's return from the region of Cilicia, the Jews of the capital, and those Greeks who sharedtheir hatred of the crime, appealed to him about the unjustified murder of Onias.	36 Quindi tornato che fu il re dalla Cilicia, i Giudei, e gli stessi Greci si presentarono a lui per querelarsi della iniqua uccisione di Onia:
37 Antiochus was profoundly grieved and fil ed with pity, and he wept for the prudence and moderation ofthe dead man.	37 E il re afflitto nell'animo compassionando il caso di Onia non trattenne le lagrime, ricordandosi della sobrietà, e della modestia del defunto:
38 Burning with indignation, he immediately stripped Andronicus of the purple, tore his garments off himand, parading him through the length of the city, rid the world of the assassin on the very spot where he had laidimpious hands on Onias, the Lord dealing out to him the punishment he deserved.	38 E acceso di sdegno ordinò che Andronico spogliato della porpora fosse menato attorno per tutta la città, e che al sacrilego fosse tolta la vita nello stesso luogo dove avea commessa l'empietà contro Onia. Cosi il Signore rendè a lui il meritato gastigo.
39 Now Lysimachus with the connivance of Menelaus had committed many sacrilegious thefts in the city,and when the facts became widely known, the populace rose against Lysimachus, who had already disposed ofmany pieces of gold plate.	39 Ma avendo Lisimaco fatti molti sacrilegj nel tempio a istigazione di Menelao, e divulgatasi la fama del molto oro, che egli ne avea cavato, si radunò il popolo contro Lisimaco.
40 The infuriated mob was becoming menacing, and Lysimachus armed nearly three thousand men andtook aggressive action; the troops were led by a certain Auranus, a man advanced in years and no less in folly.	40 E principiando la turba a fare tumulto, essendo gli animi pieni di ira, Lisimaco armati tre mila uomini sotto la condotta di un certo tiranno avanzato egualmente nell'età, e nella stoltezza, cominciò a fare delle violenze.
41 Recognising this act of aggression as the work of Lysimachus, some snatched up stones, otherscudgels, while others scooped up handfuls of ashes lying at hand, and al hurled everything indiscriminately atLysimachus' men,	41 Ma quelli conosciuti i disegni di Lisimaco si armarono chi di sassi, e chi di buoni bastoni; e alcuni gettavan sopra di lui della cenere.
42 to such effect that they wounded many of them, even kil ing a few, and routed them all; thesacrilegious thief himself they kil ed near the Treasury.	42 E molti furon feriti, e alcuni ancora uccisi, e tutto il resto messi in fuga; e lo stesso sacrilego rimase ucciso presso all'erario.
43 As a result of this, legal proceedings were taken against Menelaus.	43 Or di tutte queste cose si cominciò ad accusar Menelao.
44 When the king came down to Tyre, three men deputed by the Senate pleaded their case before him.	44 Ed essendo giunto il re a Tiro andarono a parlare con lui di questi affari tre uomini deputati da' seniori.
45 Menelaus, seeing the case had gone against him, promised a substantial sum to Ptolemy son ofDorymenes if he would influence the king in his favour.	45 E Menelao ridotto a mal partito promise una grossa somma di denaro a Tolomeo, perché svolgesse il re in suo favore.
46 Ptolemy then took the king aside into a colonnade, as though for a breath of fresh air, and persuadedhim to change his mind;	46 E Tolomeo andò a trovare il re, che se ne stava in un porticato a prendere il fresco; e lo fece cambiar di parere:
47 the king then dismissed the charges against Menelaus, the cause of al this evil, while he condemnedto death the other poor wretches who, had they pleaded even before Scythians, would have been let off scot-free.	47 Onde Menelao reo di tutto il male fa da lui pienamente assoluto; ma quei infelici, i quali in un tribunale eziandio di Sciti sarebbono stati dichiarati innocenti, li condannò alla morte.
48 No time was lost in carrying out this unjust punishment on those who had championed the cause ofthe city, the townships and the sacred vessels.	48 Furon pertanto in fretta puniti ingiustamente quelli, i quali sostenevan la causa del popolo, e della città, e la venerazione dei vasi sacri.
49 Some Tyrians even were so outraged by the crime that they provided sumptuously for their funeral,	49 Della qual cosa stomacati quelli di Tiro spesero largamente in onorare la loro sepoltura.
50 while, as a result of the greed of the powerful, Menelaus remained in power, growing more wickedthan ever and establishing himself as the chief enemy of his fellow-citizens.	50 Ma Menelao stante l'avarizia dei potenti, conservò l'autorità crescendo in malizia a danno dei cittadini.
