NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 'It is on record that the prophet Jeremiah ordered the deportees to take the fire, as we have described,	1 Se encuentra en los documentos que el profeta Jeremías mandó a los deportados que tomaran fuego como ya se ha indicado;
2 and how, having given them the Law, the prophet warned the deportees never to forget the Lord'sprecepts, nor to let their thoughts be tempted by the sight of gold and silver statues or the finery adorning them.	2 y cómo el profeta, después de darles la Ley, ordenó a los deportados que no se olvidaran de los preceptos del Señor ni se desviaran en sus pensamientos al ver ídolos de oro y plata y las galas que los envolvían.
3 Among other similar admonitions, he urged them not to let the Law depart from their hearts.	3 Entre otras cosas, les exhortaba a no apartar la Ley de sus corazones.
4 'The same document also describes how the prophet, warned by an oracle, gave orders for the tentand the ark to go with him, when he set out for the mountain which Moses had climbed to survey God's heritage.	4 Se decía también en el escrito cómo el profeta, después de una revelación, mandó llevar consigo la Tienda y el arca; y cómo salió hacia el monte donde Moisés había subido para contemplar la heredad de Dios.
5 On his arrival, Jeremiah found a cave-dwel ing, into which he put the tent, the ark and the altar ofincense, afterwards blocking up the entrance.	5 Y cuando llegó Jeremías, encontró una estancia en forma de cueva; allí metió la Tienda, el arca y el altar del incienso, y tapó la entrada.
6 Some of his companions went back later to mark out the path but were unable to find it.	6 Volvieron algunos de sus acompañantes para marcar el camino, pero no pudieron encontrarlo.
7 When Jeremiah learned this, he reproached them, "The place is to remain unknown", he said, "untilGod gathers his people together again and shows them his mercy.	7 En cuanto Jeremías lo supo, les reprendió diciéndoles: «Este lugar quedará desconocido hasta que Dios vuelva a reunir a su pueblo y le sea propicio.
8 Then the Lord wil bring these things once more to light, and the glory of the Lord will be seen, and sowil the cloud, as it was revealed in the time of Moses and when Solomon prayed that the holy place might begloriously hal owed."	8 El Señor entonces mostrará todo esto; y aparecerá la gloria del Señor y la Nube, como se mostraba en tiempo de Moisés, cuando Salomón rogó que el Lugar fuera solemnemente consagrado».
9 'It was also recorded how Solomon in his wisdom offered the sacrifice of the dedication and completionof the sanctuary.	9 Se explicaba también cómo éste, dotado de sabiduría, ofreció el sacrificio de la dedicación y la terminación del Templo.
10 As Moses had prayed to the Lord and fire had come down from heaven and burned up the sacrifice,so Solomon also prayed, and the fire from above consumed the burnt offerings.	10 Como Moisés oró al Señor y bajó del cielo fuego, que devoró las ofrendas del sacrificio, así también oró Salomón y bajó fuego que consumió los holocaustos.
11 Moses had said, "Because the sacrifice for sin had not been eaten, it was burnt instead."	11 Moisés había dicho: «La víctima por el pecado ha sido consumida por no haber sido comida».
12 Solomon similarly observed the eight-day festival.	12 Salomón celebró igualmente los ocho días de fiesta.
13 'In addition to the above, it was also recorded, both in these writings and in the Memoirs of Nehemiah, how Nehemiah founded a library and made a col ection of the books dealing with the kings and the prophets, thewritings of David and the letters of the kings on the subject of offerings.	13 Lo mismo se narraba también en los archivos y en las Memorias del tiempo de Nehemías; y cómo éste, para fundar una biblioteca, reunió los libros referentes a los reyes y a los profetas, los de David y las cartas de los reyes acerca de las ofrendas.
14 Similarly, Judas made a complete col ection of the books dispersed in the late war, and these we stillhave.	14 De igual modo Judas reunió todos los libros dispersos a causa de la guerra que sufrimos, los cuales están en nuestras manos.
15 If you need any of them, send someone to fetch them.	15 Por tanto, si tenéis necesidad de ellos, enviad a quienes os los lleven.
16 'Since we are about to celebrate the purification, we now write, requesting you to observe the samedays.	16 A punto ya de celebrar la purificación, os escribimos: Bien haréis también en celebrar estos días.
17 God, who has saved his whole people, conferring heritage, kingdom, priesthood and sanctification onal of us,	17 El Dios que salvó a todo su pueblo y que a todos otorgó la heredad, el reino, el sacerdocio y la santidad,
18 as he has promised in the Law, will surely, as our hope is in him, be swift to show us mercy andgather us together from everywhere under heaven to the holy place, since he has rescued us from great evilsand has purified it.'	18 como había prometido por la Ley, el mismo Dios, como esperamos, se apiadará pronto de nosotros y nos reunirá de todas partes bajo el cielo en el Lugar Santo; pues nos ha sacado de grandes males y ha purificado el Lugar.
19 The story of Judas Maccabaeus and his brothers, the purification of the great Temple, the dedicationof the altar,	19 La historia de Judas Macabeo y de sus hermanos, la purificación del más grande Templo, la dedicación del altar,
20 together with the wars against Antiochus Epiphanes and his son Eupator,	20 las guerras contra Antíoco Epífanes y su hijo Eupátor,
21 and the celestial manifestations that came to hearten the brave champions of Judaism, so that, fewthough they were, they pil aged the whole country, routed the barbarian hordes,	21 y las manifestaciones celestiales en favor de los que combatieron viril y gloriosamente por el Judaísmo, de suerte que, aun siendo pocos, saquearon toda la región, ahuyentaron las hordas bárbaras,
22 recovered the sanctuary renowned the whole world over, liberated the city and re-established the lawsby then all but abolished, the Lord showing his favour by al his gracious help to them-	22 recuperaron el Templo famoso en todo el mundo, liberaron la ciudad y restablecieron las leyes que estaban a punto de ser abolidas, pues el Señor se mostró propicio hacia ellos con toda benignidad;
23 al this, already related in five books by Jason of Cyrene, we shall attempt to condense into a singlework.	23 todo esto, expuesto en cinco libros por Jasón de Cirene, intentaremos nosotros compendiarlo en uno solo.
24 Considering the spate of figures and the difficulty encountered, because of the mass of material, bythose who wish to immerse themselves in historical records,	24 Porque al considerar la marea de números y la dificultad existente, por la amplitud de la materia, para los que quieren sumergirse en los relatos de la historia,
25 we have aimed at providing diversion for those who merely want something to read, a saving of labourfor those who enjoy committing things to memory, and profit for each and al .	25 nos hemos preocupado por ofrecer algún atractivo a los que desean leer, facilidad a los que gustan retenerlo de memoria, y utilidad a cualquiera que lo lea.
26 For us who have undertaken the drudgery of this abridgement, it has been no easy task but a matterof sweat and midnight oil,	26 Para nosotros, que nos hemos encargado de la fatigosa labor de este resumen, no es fácil la tarea, sino de sudores y desvelos,
27 comparable to the exacting task of someone organising a banquet, whose aim is to satisfy a variety oftastes. Nevertheless, for the sake of rendering a general service, we remain glad to endure this drudgery,	27 como tampoco al que prepara un banquete y busca el provecho de los demás le resulta esto cómodo. Sin embargo, esperando la gratitud de muchos, soportamos con gusto esta fatiga,
28 leaving accuracy of detail to the historian, and concentrating our effort on tracing the outlines in thiscondensed version.	28 dejando al historiador la tarea de precisar cada suceso y esforzándonos por seguir las normas de un resumen.
29 Just as the architect of a new house is responsible for the construction as a whole, while the manundertaking the ceramic painting has to take into consideration only the decorative requirements, so, I think, it iswith us.	29 Pues así como al arquitecto de una casa nueva corresponde la preocupación por la estructura entera; y, en cambio, al encargado de la encáustica y pinturas, el cuidado de lo necesario para la decoración, lo mismo me parece de nosotros:
30 To make the subject his own, to explore its by-ways, to be meticulous about details, is the business ofthe original historian,	30 profundizar, revolver las cuestiones y examinar punto por punto corresponde al que compone la historia;
31 but the person making the adaptation must be al owed to aim at conciseness of expression and toforgo any exhaustive treatment of his subject.	31 pero buscar concisión al exponer y renunciar a tratar el asunto de forma exhaustiva debe concederse al divulgador.
32 So now let us begin our narrative, without adding any more to what has been said above; there wouldbe no sense in expanding the preface to the history and curtailing the history itself.	32 Comencemos, por tanto, desde ahora la narración, después de haber abundado tanto en los preliminares; pues sería absurdo abundar en lo que antecede a la historia y ser breve en la historia misma.
