1 About then, Mattathias son of John, son of Simeon, a priest of the line of Joarib, left Jerusalem andsettled in Modein.	1 In quel tempo si levò su Mathathia figliuolo di Giovanni, figliuolo di Simeone, sacerdote della famiglia di Joarib, e da Gerusalemme andò a ritirarsi sul monte di Modin:
2 He had five sons, John known as Gaddi,	2 Egli aveva cinque figliuoli, Giovanni soprannominato Gaddis,
3 Simon cal ed Thassi,	3 E Simone soprannominato Thasi,
4 Judas cal ed Maccabaeus,	4 E Giuda soprannominato Maccabeo,
5 Eleazar, cal ed Avaran, and Jonathan cal ed Apphus.	5 Ed Eleazaro soprannominato Abaron, e Jonathan soprannominato Apphus:
6 When he saw the blasphemies being committed in Judah and Jerusalem,	6 Questi stavan considerando lo strazio, che si fuoco del popol di Giuda e di Gerusalemme;
7 he said, 'Alas that I should have been born to witness the ruin of my people and the ruin of the HolyCity, and to sit by while she is delivered over to her enemies, and the sanctuary into the hand of foreigners.	7 E Mathathia disse. Misero me! perché son io venuto al mondo per vedere lo scempio del popol mio e la distruzione della città santa, per istar ivi sedendo, mentr'ella è data in poter de' nemici?
8 'Her Temple has become like someone of no repute,	8 Le cose sante sono nelle mani degli stranieri, e il suo tempio è come un uomo disonorato.
9 the vessels that were her glory have been carried off as booty, her babies have been slaughtered inher streets, her young men by the enemy's sword.	9 I suoi vasi preziosi messi a saccomanno sono stati portati via, sono stati trucidati per le piazze i suoi anziani, e la sua gioventù è perita di spada per man de' nemici.
10 Is there a nation that has not claimed a share of her royal prerogatives, that has not taken some of herspoils?	10 Qual'è la nazione, che non siasi appropriato il suo regno, e non abbia avuto parte alle spoglie di lei?
11 Al her ornaments have been snatched from her, her former freedom has become slavery.	11 Tutta la sua magnificenza le è stata tolta. Quella che era libera, è fatta schiava.
12 See how the Holy Place, our beauty, our glory, is now laid waste, see how the gentiles have profanedit!	12 E ormai la nostra santità, lo splendore nostro, la nostra gloria e smarrita, e tutto hanno profanato le genti.
13 What have we left to live for?'	13 Perché adunque viviamo ancora?
14 Mattathias and his sons tore their garments, put on sackcloth, and observed deep mourning.	14 E Mathathia co' suoi figliuoli si stracciavan le vesti, e si copersero di cilizio, e menavano gran duolo.
15 The king's commissioners who were enforcing the apostasy came to the town of Modein for thesacrifices.	15 Quando sopraggiunser colà quelli che erano spediti dal re Antioco per costringere coloro, che si erano rifugiati nella città di Modin a far sacrifizj, e abbruciare incensi, e abbandonare la legge di Dio.
16 Many Israelites gathered round them, but Mattathias and his sons drew apart.	16 E molti del popolo di Israele acconsentirono, e si unirono con loro: ma Mathathia e i suoi figliuoli stetter costanti.
17 The king's commissioners then addressed Mattathias as fol ows, 'You are a respected leader, a greatman in this town; you have sons and brothers to support you.	17 E i messi di Antioco dissero a Mathathia: Tu sei il principale, il più illustre e il più grande di questa città, ed hai una corona di figliuoli e di fratelli:
18 Be the first to step forward and conform to the king's decree, as all the nations have done, and theleaders of Judah and the survivors in Jerusalem; you and your sons shal be reckoned among the Friends of theKing, you and your sons wil be honoured with gold and silver and many presents.'	18 Vieni adunque tu il primo, e fa quello che il re comanda, con te han fatto tutte le genti e gli uomini di Giuda e quelli che son rimasi in Gerusalemme, e sarai tu e i tuoi figliuoli nel numero degli amici del re, e avrai in dovizia oro e argento, e doni grandi.
19 Raising his voice, Mattathias retorted, 'Even if every nation living in the king's dominions obeys him,each forsaking its ancestral religion to conform to his decrees,	19 Rispose Mathathia, e disse ad alta voce: Quando anche tutte le genti obbediscono al re Antioco, e ogni uomo si ritiri dal servizio alla legge de' padri suoi, e si soggetti ai comandi di lui,
20 I, my sons and my brothers will stil fol ow the covenant of our ancestors.	20 Io e i miei figliuoli e i miei fratelli obbediremo alla legge de' padri nostri.
21 May Heaven preserve us from forsaking the Law and its observances.	21 Guardici Dio! Non è cosa utile per noi l'abbandonare la legge e i comandamenti di Dio:
22 As for the king's orders, we will not fol ow them: we shal not swerve from our own religion either toright or to left.'	22 Non ascolteremo le parole del re Antioco, e non farem sacrifizi violando i riti, della nostra legge per battere un'altra strada.
23 As he finished speaking, a Jew came forward in the sight of al to offer sacrifice on the altar in Modeinas the royal edict required.	23 Finito ch'egli ebbe di dir queste parole, si presentò a vista di tutti un certo Giudeo per far sacrifizio agl'idoli sull'altare, che era nella città di Modin, secondo l'editto del re:
24 When Mattathias saw this, he was fired with zeal; stirred to the depth of his being, he gave vent to hislegitimate anger, threw himself on the man and slaughtered him on the altar.	24 Videlo Mathathia, e ne ebbe dolore, e le sue viscere si scommossero, e si accese di sdegno secondo il prescritto della legge, e assalito colui, lo trucidò sull'altare.
25 At the same time he killed the king's commissioner who was there to enforce the sacrifice, and toredown the altar.	25 E oltre a ciò uccise nel tempo stesso quell'uomo mandato dal re Antioco, e il quale costringeva la gente a sacrificare, e atterrò l'altare,
26 In his zeal for the Law he acted as Phinehas had against Zimri son of Salu.	26 Ed ebbe zelo della legge imitando quello che fece Phinees a Zamri figliuolo di Salomi.
27 Then Mattathias went through the town, shouting at the top of his voice, 'Let everyone who has anyzeal for the Law and takes his stand on the covenant come out and follow me.'	27 E andò Mathathia gridando ad alta voce per la città, e dicendo: Chiunque ha zelo per la legge, e serba inviolato il testamento, mi venga dietro.
28 Then he fled with his sons into the hills, leaving al their possessions behind in the town.	28 E si fuggi egli co' suoi figliuoli alla montagna, abbandonando tutto quel che aveano nella città.
29 Many people who were concerned for virtue and justice went down to the desert and stayed there,	29 Allora molti amatori della legge e della giustizia se n' andarono nel deserto:
30 taking with them their sons, their wives and their cattle, so oppressive had their sufferings become.	30 E ivi si stavano eglino e i loro figliuoli e le donne loro e i loro bestiami; perocchè si trovavano affogati dalle calamità.
31 Word was brought to the royal officials and forces stationed in Jerusalem, in the City of David, thatthose who had repudiated the king's edict had gone down to the hiding places in the desert.	31 Or agli uomini del re, e alle milizie, che erano a Gerusalemme nella città di David, fu riferito, come certi uomini, che aveano insultato ai comandi del re, se n'erano andati pe' tragetti nel deserto, e che erano stati seguitati da molti altri.
32 A strong detachment went after them, and when it came up with them ranged itself against them inbattle formation, preparing to attack them on the Sabbath day,	32 E tosto n' andarono in traccia, e si disposero ad assalirli in giorno di sabato,
33 and said, 'Enough of this! Come out and do as the king orders and you will be spared.'	33 E disser loro: Resisterete voi anche adesso? Venite fuora, e fate quel che comanda il re Antioco, e sarete salvi.
34 The others, however, replied, 'We refuse to come out, and we wil not obey the king's orders andprofane the Sabbath day.'	34 E quelli dissero: Noi non verremo, e non faremo i voleri del re, e non violeremo il giorno di sabato.
35 The royal forces at once went into action,	35 E quelli andarono all'attacco.
36 but the others offered no opposition; not a stone was thrown, there was no barricading of the hidingplaces.	36 Ed essi non rispondevan per niente, ne scagliaron contro i nemici una pietra, ne chiuser le bocche dei lor nascondigli;
37 They only said, 'Let us all die innocent; let heaven and earth bear witness that you are massacring uswith no pretence of justice.'	37 Perocchè dissero: Muoiamo tutti nella nostra semplicità, e il cielo e la terra saranno per noi testimoni, come ingiustamente ci fate perire.
38 The attack was pressed home on the Sabbath itself, and they were slaughtered, with their wives andchildren and cattle, to the number of one thousand persons.	38 E quelli gli assaltarono in giorno di sabato, e perirono tanto essi, che i loro figliuoli, e le donne loro e i bestiami, e furono sino a mille persone.
39 When the news reached Mattathias and his friends, they mourned them bitterly	39 E riseppe ciò Mathathia e i suoi amici, e piansero quella gente a cald'occhi.
40 and said to one another, 'If we al do as our brothers have done, and refuse to fight the gentiles for ourlives and institutions, they wil only destroy us the sooner from the earth.'	40 E dicevano l'uno all'altro: Se faremo tutti noi, come han fatto i nostri fratelli, e non combatteremo contro le nazioni per difendere le nostre vite e la nostra legge, or'è il tempo che presto ci stermineranno dal mondo.
41 So then and there they came to this decision, 'If anyone attacks us on the Sabbath day, whoever hemay be, we shall resist him; we must not al be kil ed, as our brothers were in the hiding places.'	41 E risolverono in quel giorno, e dissero: Chiunque siasi, che venga per combatterci in giorno di sabato, noi combatteremo contro di lui; e non morremo tutti, come sono morti i nostri fratelli nelle caverne.
42 Soon they were joined by the Hasidaean party, stout fighting men of Israel, each one a volunteer onthe side of the Law.	42 Allora andò ad unirsi con essi la conregazione degli Assidei, uomini i più valorosi d'Israele, e tutti zelo per la legge:
43 Al the refugees from the persecution ral ied to them, giving them added support.	43 E tutti quelli, che astretti dalle calamità, si fuggivano, si incorporaron con essi, e accrebbero le loro forze.
44 They organised themselves into an armed force, striking down the sinners in their anger, and therenegades in their fury, and those who escaped them fled to the gentiles for safety.	44 E messo insieme un esercito, diedero addosso furiosamente ai peccatori e agl'inimici senza averne pietà: de' quali quei, che rimasero, fuggiron tra le nazioni per mettersi in salvo.
45 Mattathias and his friends made a tour, overthrowing the altars	45 E Mathathia andò attorno co' suoi amici, e atterrarono gli altari.
46 and forcibly circumcising al the boys they found uncircumcised in the territories of Israel.	46 E ai fanciulli incirconcisi, quanti ne trovarono per tutto il paese d'Israele, diedero coraggiosamente la circoncisione.
47 They hunted down the upstarts and managed their campaign to good effect.	47 E perseguitarono i superbi, e riuscivano loro tutte le cose, che aveano per le mani,
48 They wrested the Law out of the control of the gentiles and the kings and reduced the sinners toimpotence.	48 E vendicarono la legge dalla possanza delle genti, e dalla possanza de' re, e non lasciarono alzar le corna al peccatore.
49 As the days of Mattathias were drawing to a close, he said to his sons, 'Arrogance and outrage arenow in the ascendant; it is a period of turmoil and bitter hatred.	49 E appressandosi per Mathathia il giorno del morire, disse egli ai suoi figliuoli: Adesso domina la superbia; tempo di gastigo e di ruina e di sdegno e di furore egli è questa.
50 This is the time, my children, for you to have a burning zeal for the Law and to give your lives for thecovenant of our ancestors.	50 Adesso adunque, o figliuoli, siate zelatori della legge, ed esponete le vostre vite per lo testamento dei padri vostri;
51 Remember the deeds performed by our ancestors, each in his generation, and you wil win greathonour and everlasting renown.	51 E ricordatevi delle opere fatte a tempo loro dai padri vostri, e vi acquisterete una gloria grande e un nome eterno.
52 Was not Abraham tested and found faithful, was that not considered as justifying him?	52 Abramo non fu egli trovato fedele nella tentazione, e fugli imputato a giustizia?
53 Joseph in the time of his distress maintained the Law, and so became lord of Egypt.	53 Giuseppe nel tempo di sua afflizione osservò i comandamenti, e divenne signor dell'Egitto.
54 Phinehas, our father, in return for his burning zeal, received the covenant of everlasting priesthood.	54 Phinees padre nostra col suo gran zelo per l'onore di Dio riceve la promessa di un sacerdozio eterno.
55 Joshua, for carrying out his task, became judge of Israel.	55 Giosuè per la sua obbedienza diventò condottiero d'Israele.
56 Caleb, for his testimony before the assembled people, received an inheritance in the land.	56 Caleb per la testimonianza renduta nell'adunanza, ottenne l'eredità.
57 David for his generous heart inherited the throne of an everlasting kingdom.	57 Davidde per la sua mansuetudine conseguì il trono reale in eterno.
58 Elijah for his consuming fervour for the Law was caught up to heaven itself.	58 Elia ardente di zelo per la legge fu ricevuto nel cielo.
59 Hananiah, Azariah and Mishael, for their fidelity, were saved from the flame.	59 Anania, Azaria e Misael per la loro fede furon liberati dalle fiamme.
60 Daniel for his singleness of heart was rescued from the lion's jaws.	60 Daniele per la sua integrità fu liberato dalla gola de' lioni.
61 Know then that, generation after generation, no one who hopes in him will be overcome.	61 E cosi andate rammentando di generazione in generazione: tutti quelli che in Dio confidano, non vengon meno.
62 Do not fear the threats of the sinner, al his brave show must come to the dunghill and the worms.	62 E non vi spaventino le parole di un uom peccatore, perocche la gloria di lui è sterco e vermini.
63 Exalted today, tomorrow he is nowhere to be found, for he has returned to the dust he came from andhis scheming is brought to nothing.	63 Oggi si leva in alto, e domani sparisce; perché egli ritorna nella sua polvere, e tutti i suoi disegni sen vanno in fumo.
64 My children, be resolute and courageous for the Law, for it wil bring you glory.	64 Voi adunque, o figliuoli, siate costanti, e adoperate virilmente per la legge; conciossiachè da lei avrete gloria.
65 'Here is your brother Simeon, I know he is a man of sound judgement. Listen to him al your lives; lethim take your father's place.	65 Ed ecco qui Simone vostro fratello; io so, che egli e uomo di consiglio; ascoltatelo sempre, ed ei vi terrà luogo di padre.
66 Judas Maccabaeus, strong and brave from his youth, let him be your general and conduct the waragainst the gentiles.	66 E Giuda Maccabeo valoroso e forte fin dalla sua giovinezza sia capo delle vostre milizie ed egli' condurrà il popolo nelle sue guerre.
67 The rest of you are to enrol in your ranks al those who keep the Law, and to assure the vengeance ofyour people.	67 Riunite con voi tutti quelli, che osservan la legge, e fate le vendette del vostro popolo.
68 Pay back the gentiles to the ful , and hold fast to the ordinance of the Law.'	68 Rendete alle genti quel che han meritato, e stato intenti ai precetti della legge.
69 Then he blessed them and was joined to his ancestors.	69 Indi li benedisse, e andò a riunirsi coi padri suoi.
70 He died in the year 146 and was buried in his ancestral tomb at Modein, and al Israel mourned himdeeply.	70 Egli morì l'anno cento quarantasei, e fu sepolto da' suoi figliuoli nella sepoltura de padri suoi in Modin, e tutto Israele lo pianse grandemente.
