NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 About then, Mattathias son of John, son of Simeon, a priest of the line of Joarib, left Jerusalem andsettled in Modein.	1 En ces jours-là, un prêtre du nom de Mattathias, fils de Jean, fils de Siméon, de la descendance de Yoarib, quitta Jérusalem pour s’installer à Modine.
2 He had five sons, John known as Gaddi,	2 Il avait cinq fils, Jean surnommé Gadi,
3 Simon cal ed Thassi,	3 Simon surnommé Tassi,
4 Judas cal ed Maccabaeus,	4 Judas surnommé Maccabée,
5 Eleazar, cal ed Avaran, and Jonathan cal ed Apphus.	5 Éléazar surnommé Avaran, Jonathan surnommé Afous.
6 When he saw the blasphemies being committed in Judah and Jerusalem,	6 À la vue des péchés qui se commettaient en Juda et à Jérusalem,
7 he said, 'Alas that I should have been born to witness the ruin of my people and the ruin of the HolyCity, and to sit by while she is delivered over to her enemies, and the sanctuary into the hand of foreigners.	7 il s’écria: “Quel malheur! Je suis né pour voir la ruine de mon peuple et la ruine de la Ville Sainte! Je reste là assis alors que la ville est livrée aux mains des ennemis, et le Temple au pouvoir des étrangers.”
8 'Her Temple has become like someone of no repute,	8 “Le Temple de Dieu est devenu comme un homme méprisé.
9 the vessels that were her glory have been carried off as booty, her babies have been slaughtered inher streets, her young men by the enemy's sword.	9 Tout ce qui faisait sa gloire est parti en captivité. Ses enfants ont été tués sur les places, et ses jeunes, frappés par l’épée de l’ennemi.
10 Is there a nation that has not claimed a share of her royal prerogatives, that has not taken some of herspoils?	10 Y a-t-il une nation qui n’ait pas hérité de ses biens, qui ne se soit pas emparée de ses dépouilles?
11 Al her ornaments have been snatched from her, her former freedom has become slavery.	11 Toute sa beauté lui a été enlevée, elle était libre, elle est devenue esclave.
12 See how the Holy Place, our beauty, our glory, is now laid waste, see how the gentiles have profanedit!	12 Le Lieu Saint, notre merveille et notre gloire, est maintenant devenu un désert, les païens l’ont profané.
13 What have we left to live for?'	13 À quoi me sert de vivre encore?”
14 Mattathias and his sons tore their garments, put on sackcloth, and observed deep mourning.	14 Mattathias et ses fils déchirèrent leurs vêtements, ils s’habillèrent avec des sacs et firent un grand deuil.
15 The king's commissioners who were enforcing the apostasy came to the town of Modein for thesacrifices.	15 Arrivèrent alors à Modine les officiers du roi qui devaient imposer l’apostasie et faire offrir les sacrifices.
16 Many Israelites gathered round them, but Mattathias and his sons drew apart.	16 Beaucoup d’Israélites s’approchèrent d’eux, mais Mattathias et ses fils se tenaient à l’écart.
17 The king's commissioners then addressed Mattathias as fol ows, 'You are a respected leader, a greatman in this town; you have sons and brothers to support you.	17 Les officiers du roi dirent à Mattathias: “Tu es un personnage important et respecté dans cette ville, tu as des fils et des frères derrière toi;
18 Be the first to step forward and conform to the king's decree, as all the nations have done, and theleaders of Judah and the survivors in Jerusalem; you and your sons shal be reckoned among the Friends of theKing, you and your sons wil be honoured with gold and silver and many presents.'	18 avance donc le premier pour obéir aux ordres du roi comme l’ont fait toutes les nations, les chefs de Juda et ceux qui sont restés à Jérusalem. Toi et tes fils vous serez admis parmi les amis du roi, vous serez honorés de cadeaux en argent et en or et de bien d’autres choses.”
19 Raising his voice, Mattathias retorted, 'Even if every nation living in the king's dominions obeys him,each forsaking its ancestral religion to conform to his decrees,	19 Mattathias répondit d’une voix forte: “Même si tous les peuples qui forment l’empire du roi lui obéissent, même si chacun abandonne le culte de ses pères pour se conformer à ses ordonnances,
20 I, my sons and my brothers will stil fol ow the covenant of our ancestors.	20 moi, mes fils et mes frères, nous suivrons l’Alliance de nos pères.
21 May Heaven preserve us from forsaking the Law and its observances.	21 Que Dieu nous garde d’abandonner la Loi et ses observances!
22 As for the king's orders, we will not fol ow them: we shal not swerve from our own religion either toright or to left.'	22 Nous n’écouterons pas les ordres du roi, nous ne dévierons pas de notre religion, ni à droite, ni à gauche.”
23 As he finished speaking, a Jew came forward in the sight of al to offer sacrifice on the altar in Modeinas the royal edict required.	23 Lorsqu’il eut terminé de parler, un Juif s’avança devant tout le monde pour sacrifier sur l’autel de Modine conformément au décret du roi.
24 When Mattathias saw this, he was fired with zeal; stirred to the depth of his being, he gave vent to hislegitimate anger, threw himself on the man and slaughtered him on the altar.	24 En voyant cela, Mattathias fut pris d’indignation et de colère, il donna libre cours à sa fureur, se jeta sur l’homme et l’égorgea sur l’autel.
25 At the same time he killed the king's commissioner who was there to enforce the sacrifice, and toredown the altar.	25 Il tua du même coup l’officier du roi qui obligeait à sacrifier et il renversa l’autel.
26 In his zeal for the Law he acted as Phinehas had against Zimri son of Salu.	26 Son zèle pour la Loi fut semblable à celui de Pinhas lorsqu’il frappa Zimri fils de Salou.
27 Then Mattathias went through the town, shouting at the top of his voice, 'Let everyone who has anyzeal for the Law and takes his stand on the covenant come out and follow me.'	27 Mattathias cria alors d’une voix forte à travers la ville: “Que ceux qui veulent défendre la Loi et rester dans l’Alliance me suivent!”
28 Then he fled with his sons into the hills, leaving al their possessions behind in the town.	28 Il s’enfuit avec ses fils dans les montagnes, abandonnant dans la ville tout ce qu’il possédait.
29 Many people who were concerned for virtue and justice went down to the desert and stayed there,	29 Beaucoup de gens qui avaient à cœur la justice et les décrets de la Loi, vinrent au désert pour s’y installer.
30 taking with them their sons, their wives and their cattle, so oppressive had their sufferings become.	30 Ils arrivèrent avec leurs enfants, leurs femmes et leur bétail, parce que la vie leur était devenue impossible.
31 Word was brought to the royal officials and forces stationed in Jerusalem, in the City of David, thatthose who had repudiated the king's edict had gone down to the hiding places in the desert.	31 On annonça aux officiers du roi et aux troupes qui étaient à Jérusalem dans la Cité de David, que des gens qui rejetaient les ordres du roi s’étaient réfugiés dans les cachettes du désert.
32 A strong detachment went after them, and when it came up with them ranged itself against them inbattle formation, preparing to attack them on the Sabbath day,	32 Un fort détachement se mit à leur poursuite et les rejoignit; il vint se poster face à eux et se disposa à les attaquer le jour du sabbat.
33 and said, 'Enough of this! Come out and do as the king orders and you will be spared.'	33 On leur dit: “C’est assez, sortez! Obéissez à l’ordre du roi et vous aurez la vie sauve!”
34 The others, however, replied, 'We refuse to come out, and we wil not obey the king's orders andprofane the Sabbath day.'	34 Mais ils répondirent: “Nous ne sortirons pas! Nous n’observerons pas le décret du roi et nous ne violerons pas le jour du sabbat.”
35 The royal forces at once went into action,	35 On les attaqua aussitôt.
36 but the others offered no opposition; not a stone was thrown, there was no barricading of the hidingplaces.	36 Ils refusèrent de riposter, de lancer des pierres ou de se barricader dans leurs cachettes:
37 They only said, 'Let us all die innocent; let heaven and earth bear witness that you are massacring uswith no pretence of justice.'	37 “Mourons tous, disaient-ils, nous resterons sans reproche; le ciel et la terre sont témoins que vous nous faites périr injustement.”
38 The attack was pressed home on the Sabbath itself, and they were slaughtered, with their wives andchildren and cattle, to the number of one thousand persons.	38 Les autres leur donnèrent l’assaut alors que c’était le sabbat, et ils moururent avec leurs femmes, leurs enfants, leur bétail; il y avait là environ mille personnes.
39 When the news reached Mattathias and his friends, they mourned them bitterly	39 Lorsque Mattathias et ses amis apprirent la chose, ils firent un grand deuil.
40 and said to one another, 'If we al do as our brothers have done, and refuse to fight the gentiles for ourlives and institutions, they wil only destroy us the sooner from the earth.'	40 Mais ils se dirent entre eux: “Si nous faisons tous comme ont fait nos frères, si nous ne nous défendons pas contre les païens pour sauver notre vie et nos observances, ils nous feront vite sortir de ce monde.”
41 So then and there they came to this decision, 'If anyone attacks us on the Sabbath day, whoever hemay be, we shall resist him; we must not al be kil ed, as our brothers were in the hiding places.'	41 Ils prirent donc le jour même cette décision: “Si quelqu’un vient nous attaquer le jour du sabbat, nous lui ferons face et nous ne nous laisserons pas massacrer comme l’ont fait nos frères qui sont morts dans leurs refuges.”
42 Soon they were joined by the Hasidaean party, stout fighting men of Israel, each one a volunteer onthe side of the Law.	42 Tout un groupe d’Assidéens vint les rejoindre, des Israélites courageux et tout dévoués à la Loi.
43 Al the refugees from the persecution ral ied to them, giving them added support.	43 Tous ceux qui fuyaient le danger vinrent en renfort et grossirent leur nombre;
44 They organised themselves into an armed force, striking down the sinners in their anger, and therenegades in their fury, and those who escaped them fled to the gentiles for safety.	44 ils organisèrent ainsi leur armée. Ils commencèrent alors à décharger leur colère sur les pécheurs, et leur fureur sur ceux qui avaient abandonné la Loi. Ceux-ci s’enfuirent chez les nations païennes pour y trouver refuge.
45 Mattathias and his friends made a tour, overthrowing the altars	45 Mattathias et ses amis firent alors une tournée pour détruire les autels
46 and forcibly circumcising al the boys they found uncircumcised in the territories of Israel.	46 et circoncire de force tous les enfants non circoncis qu’ils trouvèrent sur le territoire d’Israël.
47 They hunted down the upstarts and managed their campaign to good effect.	47 Ils poursuivirent les insolents et ils eurent plein succès;
48 They wrested the Law out of the control of the gentiles and the kings and reduced the sinners toimpotence.	48 ils reprirent leur religion de la main des nations païennes et de leur roi, et réduisirent les pécheurs au silence.
49 As the days of Mattathias were drawing to a close, he said to his sons, 'Arrogance and outrage arenow in the ascendant; it is a period of turmoil and bitter hatred.	49 Lorsque la vie de Mattathias touchait à sa fin, il réunit ses fils: “Vous voyez maintenant le règne de l’insolence et du mépris, leur dit-il, le temps de la révolution et le débordement de la Colère.
50 This is the time, my children, for you to have a burning zeal for the Law and to give your lives for thecovenant of our ancestors.	50 Vous, mes fils, soyez remplis de courage pour la Loi et donnez vos vies pour l’Alliance de nos pères.”
51 Remember the deeds performed by our ancestors, each in his generation, and you wil win greathonour and everlasting renown.	51 Souvenez-vous de ce que nos pères ont accompli en leur temps, et vous gagnerez une grande gloire et un nom immortel.
52 Was not Abraham tested and found faithful, was that not considered as justifying him?	52 C’est dans l’épreuve qu’Abraham a été trouvé fidèle, et à cause de cela il a été regardé comme un juste.
53 Joseph in the time of his distress maintained the Law, and so became lord of Egypt.	53 Joseph, au temps du malheur, a observé la Loi, et il est devenu maître de l’Égypte.
54 Phinehas, our father, in return for his burning zeal, received the covenant of everlasting priesthood.	54 Pinhas, notre père, a brûlé de zèle, et il a reçu l’alliance d’un sacerdoce éternel.
55 Joshua, for carrying out his task, became judge of Israel.	55 Josué a rempli fidèlement sa mission, et il est devenu juge en Israël.
56 Caleb, for his testimony before the assembled people, received an inheritance in the land.	56 Caleb a proclamé la vérité au milieu de l’assemblée, et il a reçu un héritage dans le pays.
57 David for his generous heart inherited the throne of an everlasting kingdom.	57 David, à cause de sa piété, a reçu un trône royal qui passera les siècles.
58 Elijah for his consuming fervour for the Law was caught up to heaven itself.	58 Élie, qui avait brûlé de zèle pour la Loi, a été enlevé jusqu’au ciel.
59 Hananiah, Azariah and Mishael, for their fidelity, were saved from the flame.	59 Ananias, Azarias, Misaël, ont eu confiance, et ils furent sauvés de la flamme.
60 Daniel for his singleness of heart was rescued from the lion's jaws.	60 Daniel, qui n’avait pas transigé, a été sauvé de la gueule des lions.
61 Know then that, generation after generation, no one who hopes in him will be overcome.	61 Comprenez donc que, de génération en génération, ceux qui espèrent en Dieu ne seront pas vaincus.
62 Do not fear the threats of the sinner, al his brave show must come to the dunghill and the worms.	62 Ne craignez pas les menaces d’un homme qui va contre Dieu, car sa gloire finira sur le fumier et dans la pourriture.
63 Exalted today, tomorrow he is nowhere to be found, for he has returned to the dust he came from andhis scheming is brought to nothing.	63 Aujourd’hui il est honoré, et demain on ne le connaîtra plus: il retournera à la poussière d’où il est sorti et il ne restera rien de son projet.
64 My children, be resolute and courageous for the Law, for it wil bring you glory.	64 Soyez forts, mes fils, et restez fidèles à la Loi, parce que c’est d’elle que vous viendra la gloire.
65 'Here is your brother Simeon, I know he is a man of sound judgement. Listen to him al your lives; lethim take your father's place.	65 Voyez votre frère Siméon, je sais qu’il est de bon conseil. Écoutez-le toujours, il sera pour vous un père.
66 Judas Maccabaeus, strong and brave from his youth, let him be your general and conduct the waragainst the gentiles.	66 Judas Maccabée a été courageux dès son enfance, il sera le chef de votre armée, il mènera la guerre contre les nations.
67 The rest of you are to enrol in your ranks al those who keep the Law, and to assure the vengeance ofyour people.	67 Vous allez rassembler tous ceux qui observent la Loi et vous vengerez votre peuple.
68 Pay back the gentiles to the ful , and hold fast to the ordinance of the Law.'	68 Rendez aux nations païennes le mal qu’elles vous ont fait et attachez-vous aux commandements de la Loi.”
69 Then he blessed them and was joined to his ancestors.	69 Alors il les bénit et il fut réuni à ses pères.
70 He died in the year 146 and was buried in his ancestral tomb at Modein, and al Israel mourned himdeeply.	70 Il mourut en l’an 146; on l’enterra dans la tombe de ses pères à Modine et Israël fit un grand deuil pour lui.
