1 Maccabees 2

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 About then, Mattathias son of John, son of Simeon, a priest of the line of Joarib, left Jerusalem andsettled in Modein.	1 En esos días, Matatías, hijo de Juan, hijo de Simeón, sacerdote del linaje de Joarib, salió de Jerusalén y fue a establecerse a Modín.
2 He had five sons, John known as Gaddi,	2 Tenía cinco hijos: Juan, por sobrenombre Gadí;
3 Simon cal ed Thassi,	3 Simón, llamado Tasí;
4 Judas cal ed Maccabaeus,	4 Judas, llamado Macabeo;
5 Eleazar, cal ed Avaran, and Jonathan cal ed Apphus.	5 Eleazar, llamado Avarán; y Jonatán, llamado Afús.
6 When he saw the blasphemies being committed in Judah and Jerusalem,	6 Al ver las impiedades que se cometían en Judá y en Jerusalén,
7 he said, 'Alas that I should have been born to witness the ruin of my people and the ruin of the HolyCity, and to sit by while she is delivered over to her enemies, and the sanctuary into the hand of foreigners.	7 Matatías exclamó: «¡Ay de mí! ¿Para esto he nacido? ¿Para ver la ruina de mi pueblo y la destrucción de la Ciudad Santa? ¿Para quedarme sentado en ella, mientras es entregada al poder del enemigo y el Santuario está en manos de extranjeros?
8 'Her Temple has become like someone of no repute,	8 Su Templo ha quedado como un hombre envilecido,
9 the vessels that were her glory have been carried off as booty, her babies have been slaughtered inher streets, her young men by the enemy's sword.	9 los objetos que eran su gloria fueron llevados como botín, sus niños masacrados en las plazas, sus jóvenes pasados al fijo de la espada enemiga.
10 Is there a nation that has not claimed a share of her royal prerogatives, that has not taken some of herspoils?	10 ¿Qué pueblo no ha heredado su realeza, apoderándose de sus despojos?
11 Al her ornaments have been snatched from her, her former freedom has become slavery.	11 Ella ha sido privada de todo su esplendor y de libre se ha convertido en esclava.
12 See how the Holy Place, our beauty, our glory, is now laid waste, see how the gentiles have profanedit!	12 Y ahí está nuestro Santuario, nuestro honor y nuestro orgullo, convertido en un desierto y profanado por los paganos.
13 What have we left to live for?'	13 ¿Vale la pena seguir viviendo así?
14 Mattathias and his sons tore their garments, put on sackcloth, and observed deep mourning.	14 Matatías y sus hijos rasgaron sus vestiduras, se pusieron un sayal y se lamentaron amargamente.
15 The king's commissioners who were enforcing the apostasy came to the town of Modein for thesacrifices.	15 Entre tanto, los delegados del rey, encargados de imponer la apostasía, llegaron a la ciudad de Modín, para exigir que se ofrecieran los sacrificios.
16 Many Israelites gathered round them, but Mattathias and his sons drew apart.	16 Se presentaron muchos israelitas, pero Matatías y sus hijos se agruparon aparte.
17 The king's commissioners then addressed Mattathias as fol ows, 'You are a respected leader, a greatman in this town; you have sons and brothers to support you.	17 Entonces los enviados del rey fueron a decirle: «Tú eres un jefe ilustre y gozas de autoridad en esta ciudad, respaldado por hijos y hermanos.
18 Be the first to step forward and conform to the king's decree, as all the nations have done, and theleaders of Judah and the survivors in Jerusalem; you and your sons shal be reckoned among the Friends of theKing, you and your sons wil be honoured with gold and silver and many presents.'	18 Sé el primero en acercarte a ejecutar la orden del rey, como lo han hecho todas las naciones, y también los hombres de Judá y los que han quedado en Jerusalén. Así tú y tus hijos, serán contados entre los Amigos del rey y gratificados con plata, oro y numerosos regalos».
19 Raising his voice, Mattathias retorted, 'Even if every nation living in the king's dominions obeys him,each forsaking its ancestral religion to conform to his decrees,	19 Matatías respondió en alta voz: «Aunque todas las naciones que están bajo el dominio del rey obedezcan y abandonen el culto de sus antepasados para someterse a sus órdenes,
20 I, my sons and my brothers will stil fol ow the covenant of our ancestors.	20 yo, mis hijos y mis hermanos nos mantendremos fieles a la Alianza de nuestros padres.
21 May Heaven preserve us from forsaking the Law and its observances.	21 El Cielo nos libre de abandonar la Ley y los preceptos.
22 As for the king's orders, we will not fol ow them: we shal not swerve from our own religion either toright or to left.'	22 Nosotros no acataremos las órdenes del rey desviándonos de nuestro culto, ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda».
23 As he finished speaking, a Jew came forward in the sight of al to offer sacrifice on the altar in Modeinas the royal edict required.	23 Cuando acabó de pronunciar estas palabras un judío se adelantó a la vista de todos para ofrecer un sacrificio sobre el altar de Modín, conforme al decreto del rey.
24 When Mattathias saw this, he was fired with zeal; stirred to the depth of his being, he gave vent to hislegitimate anger, threw himself on the man and slaughtered him on the altar.	24 Al ver esto, Matatías se enardeció de celo y se estremecieron sus entrañas; y dejándose llevar por una justa indignación, se abalanzó y lo degolló sobre el altar.
25 At the same time he killed the king's commissioner who was there to enforce the sacrifice, and toredown the altar.	25 Ahí mismo mató al delegado real que obligaba a ofrecer los sacrificios y destruyó el altar.
26 In his zeal for the Law he acted as Phinehas had against Zimri son of Salu.	26 Así manifestó su celo por la Ley, como lo había hecho Pinjás con Zimrí, hijo de Salú.
27 Then Mattathias went through the town, shouting at the top of his voice, 'Let everyone who has anyzeal for the Law and takes his stand on the covenant come out and follow me.'	27 Luego comenzó a gritar por la ciudad con todas sus fuerzas: «Todo el que sienta celo por la Ley y quiera mantenerse fiel a la Alianza, que me siga».
28 Then he fled with his sons into the hills, leaving al their possessions behind in the town.	28 Y abandonando todo lo que poseían en la ciudad, él y sus hijos huyeron a las montañas.
29 Many people who were concerned for virtue and justice went down to the desert and stayed there,	29 Entonces muchos judíos, amantes de la justicia y el derecho, se retiraron al desierto para establecerse allí
30 taking with them their sons, their wives and their cattle, so oppressive had their sufferings become.	30 con sus mujeres, sus hijos y sus ganados, porque la desgracia se había desencadenado sobre ellos.
31 Word was brought to the royal officials and forces stationed in Jerusalem, in the City of David, thatthose who had repudiated the king's edict had gone down to the hiding places in the desert.	31 Los funcionarios del rey y la guarnición que residía en Jerusalén, en la Ciudad de David, recibieron la denuncia de que algunos hombres, conculcando la orden del rey, habían ido a ocultarse en los escondites del desierto.
32 A strong detachment went after them, and when it came up with them ranged itself against them inbattle formation, preparing to attack them on the Sabbath day,	32 Un fuerte contingente salió a perseguirlos y logró alcanzarlos. Los cercaron y se dispusieron a atacarlos. Era un día sábado,
33 and said, 'Enough of this! Come out and do as the king orders and you will be spared.'	33 y les dijeron: «¡Es hora de acabar con esto! ¡Salgan, cumplan la orden del rey y salvarán sus vidas!».
34 The others, however, replied, 'We refuse to come out, and we wil not obey the king's orders andprofane the Sabbath day.'	34 Ellos respondieron: «No saldremos, ni obedeceremos la orden real, profanando así el sábado».
35 The royal forces at once went into action,	35 Inmediatamente los atacaron,
36 but the others offered no opposition; not a stone was thrown, there was no barricading of the hidingplaces.	36 pero ellos no se defendieron, ni siquiera arrojándoles piedras o cerrando la entrada de sus refugios.
37 They only said, 'Let us all die innocent; let heaven and earth bear witness that you are massacring uswith no pretence of justice.'	37 «Muramos todos, decían, manteniendo nuestra integridad. El cielo y la tierra son testigos de que ustedes nos hacen perecer injustamente».
38 The attack was pressed home on the Sabbath itself, and they were slaughtered, with their wives andchildren and cattle, to the number of one thousand persons.	38 Así fueron atacados en pleno sábado, y perecieron los hombres con sus mujeres, sus hijos y el ganado. Eran en total unas mil personas.
39 When the news reached Mattathias and his friends, they mourned them bitterly	39 Al enterarse de lo ocurrido, Matatías y sus amigos se lamentaron amargamente por las víctimas,
40 and said to one another, 'If we al do as our brothers have done, and refuse to fight the gentiles for ourlives and institutions, they wil only destroy us the sooner from the earth.'	40 pero dijeron: «Si todos nos comportamos como nuestros hermanos y no peleamos contra esta gente en defensa de nuestras vidas y de nuestras costumbres, muy pronto nos exterminarán de la tierra».
41 So then and there they came to this decision, 'If anyone attacks us on the Sabbath day, whoever hemay be, we shall resist him; we must not al be kil ed, as our brothers were in the hiding places.'	41 Y aquel mismo día resolvieron lo siguiente: «Hagamos frente a todo el que venga a atacarnos en día sábado, para no morir como nuestros hermanos en sus refugios».
42 Soon they were joined by the Hasidaean party, stout fighting men of Israel, each one a volunteer onthe side of the Law.	42 Entonces se les unió el grupo de los asideos, hombres valientes en Israel, todos ellos sinceramente fieles a la Ley.
43 Al the refugees from the persecution ral ied to them, giving them added support.	43 También se les unieron y les prestaron su ayuda todos los que querían escapar de la opresión.
44 They organised themselves into an armed force, striking down the sinners in their anger, and therenegades in their fury, and those who escaped them fled to the gentiles for safety.	44 Así formaron una fuerza armada que comenzó a descargar su ira contra los pecadores y su furor contra los impíos. Los demás tuvieron que salvarse, huyendo a las naciones extranjeras.
45 Mattathias and his friends made a tour, overthrowing the altars	45 Matatías y sus adeptos recorrieron el país, destruyendo altares,
46 and forcibly circumcising al the boys they found uncircumcised in the territories of Israel.	46 y circuncidando por la fuerza a los niños incircuncisos que hallaron en el territorio de Israel.
47 They hunted down the upstarts and managed their campaign to good effect.	47 Persiguieron a los arrogantes, y la campaña dio buenos resultados.
48 They wrested the Law out of the control of the gentiles and the kings and reduced the sinners toimpotence.	48 De esa manera defendieron la Ley contra los paganos y sus reyes, y no permitieron que prevalecieran los malvados.
49 As the days of Mattathias were drawing to a close, he said to his sons, 'Arrogance and outrage arenow in the ascendant; it is a period of turmoil and bitter hatred.	49 Cuando la vida de Matatías llegaba a su fin, este dijo a sus hijos: «Ahora reinan la insolencia y el ultraje, es tiempo de perturbación y de furor desencadenado.
50 This is the time, my children, for you to have a burning zeal for the Law and to give your lives for thecovenant of our ancestors.	50 Por lo tanto, hijos míos, ardan de celo por la Ley, dando la vida por la Alianza de nuestros padres
51 Remember the deeds performed by our ancestors, each in his generation, and you wil win greathonour and everlasting renown.	51 Recuerden las obras que realizaron nuestros padres en su tiempo: así alcanzarán una inmensa gloria y una fama imperecedera.
52 Was not Abraham tested and found faithful, was that not considered as justifying him?	52 ¿Acaso Abraham no fue hallado fiel en la prueba y por eso Dios lo contó entre los justos?
53 Joseph in the time of his distress maintained the Law, and so became lord of Egypt.	53 José, en el momento de la angustia, observó la Ley, y así llegó a ser señor de Egipto.
54 Phinehas, our father, in return for his burning zeal, received the covenant of everlasting priesthood.	54 Pinjás, nuestro padre, por su ardiente celo, recibió la alianza de un sacerdocio eterno.
55 Joshua, for carrying out his task, became judge of Israel.	55 Josué, por haber cumplido la palabra de Dios, llegó a ser juez en Israel.
56 Caleb, for his testimony before the assembled people, received an inheritance in the land.	56 Caleb, por haber dado testimonio ante la asamblea, recibió una herencia en el país.
57 David for his generous heart inherited the throne of an everlasting kingdom.	57 David, por su piedad, heredó un trono real para siempre
58 Elijah for his consuming fervour for the Law was caught up to heaven itself.	58 Elías, por su ardiente celo por la Ley, fue arrebatado al cielo.
59 Hananiah, Azariah and Mishael, for their fidelity, were saved from the flame.	59 Ananías, Azarías y Misael, por haber confiado en Dios, fueron salvados de la llama.
60 Daniel for his singleness of heart was rescued from the lion's jaws.	60 Daniel, por su integridad, fue librado de las fauces de los leones.
61 Know then that, generation after generation, no one who hopes in him will be overcome.	61 Adviertan, entonces, que a lo largo de las generaciones los que esperan en él no sucumben jamás.
62 Do not fear the threats of the sinner, al his brave show must come to the dunghill and the worms.	62 No teman las amenazas de un hombre pecador, porque su gloria acabará en podredumbre y gusanos.
63 Exalted today, tomorrow he is nowhere to be found, for he has returned to the dust he came from andhis scheming is brought to nothing.	63 hoy es exaltado y mañana desaparece, porque habrá vuelto al polvo de donde vino y sus proyectos quedarán frustrados.
64 My children, be resolute and courageous for the Law, for it wil bring you glory.	64 Por eso, hijos míos, sean valientes, y manténganse firmes en el cumplimiento de la Ley, ya que gracias a ella serán colmados de gloria.
65 'Here is your brother Simeon, I know he is a man of sound judgement. Listen to him al your lives; lethim take your father's place.	65 Ahí tienen a Simeón, su hermano. Yo sé que es hombre sensato: escúchenlo siempre, y hará las veces de padre.
66 Judas Maccabaeus, strong and brave from his youth, let him be your general and conduct the waragainst the gentiles.	66 Judas Macabeo ha sido valiente desde su juventud: que él sea el jefe del ejército y dirija la guerra contra los extranjeros.
67 The rest of you are to enrol in your ranks al those who keep the Law, and to assure the vengeance ofyour people.	67 Ustedes, por su parte, reúnan a todos los que practican la Ley y reivindiquen a nuestro pueblo.
68 Pay back the gentiles to the ful , and hold fast to the ordinance of the Law.'	68 Devuelvan a los paganos el mal que ellos les han hecho y observen los preceptos de la Ley».
69 Then he blessed them and was joined to his ancestors.	69 Después los bendijo y fue a reunirse con sus padres.
70 He died in the year 146 and was buried in his ancestral tomb at Modein, and al Israel mourned himdeeply.	70 Matatías murió el año ciento cuarenta y seis y fue sepultado en Modín, en el sepulcro de sus padres. Todo Israel hizo un gran duelo por él.
