1 Simon heard that Trypho had col ected a large army to invade and devastate Judaea,	1 Or Simone inteso come Trifone avea radunato un grosso esercito per entrare nella terra di Giuda, e desolarla.
2 and when he saw how the people were quaking with fear, he went up to Jerusalem, cal ed the peopletogether,	2 E veggendo come la gente era impaurito e tremante, andò a Gerusalemme, e convocò tutto il popolo:
3 and exhorted them thus, 'You know yourselves how much I and my brothers and my father's familyhave done for the laws and the sanctuary; you know what wars and hardships we have experienced.	3 E gli animò, e disse: Voi sapete quanto e io e i miei fratelli, e la casa del padre mio abbiam combattuto per la legge e pel santuario, e in quali angustie ci siamo trovati.
4 That is why my brothers are all dead, for Israel's sake, and I am the only one left.	4 Per questa causa perirono tutti i miei fratelli per Israele, e son rimaso io solo.
5 Far be it from me, then, to be sparing of my own life in any time of oppression, for I am not worth morethan my brothers.	5 Or non sia mai, che io abbia riguardo alla mia vita in qualunque tempo di afflizione; perocchè non son io da più che i miei fratelli.
6 Rather wil I avenge my nation and the sanctuary and your wives and children, now that the foreignersare al united in malice to destroy us.'	6 Io adunque difenderò il mio popolo e il santuario e i nostri figliuoli e le nostre mogli, or che tutte le genti per l'odio, che portano a noi, si uniscono alla nostra distruzione.
7 The people's spirit rekindled as they listened to his words,	7 A queste parole si infiammò lo spirito del popolo;
8 and they shouted back at him, 'You are our leader in place of Judas and your brother Jonathan.	8 E ad alta voce risposero: Tu se' nostro condottiere in luogo di Giuda e di Gionata tuoi fratelli:
9 Fight our battles for us, and we wil do whatever you tel us.'	9 Combatti per noi, e faremo tutto quello che ci conanderai.
10 So he assembled al the fighting men and hurried on with completing the wal s of Jerusalem,fortifying the whole perimeter.	10 Ed egli, messi insieme tutti gli uomini sperimentati nel mestiere dell'armi, fece terminare con tutta sollecitudine le mura di Gerusalemme, e fortificolla da tutte le parti.
11 He sent a considerable force to Joppa under Jonathan son of Absalom who drove out the inhabitantsand remained there in occupation.	11 E mandò Gionata figliuolo di Absalom a Joppe con nuove schiere, e cacciati quelli che vi eran dentro, si fermò egli colà.
12 Trypho now left Ptolemais with a large army to invade Judaea, taking Jonathan with him underguard.	12 E Trifone parti con grosso esercito da Tolemaide per entrare nella Giudea, e con lui Gionata prigioniero.
13 Simon pitched camp in Adida, facing the plain.	13 E Simone si avvicinò ad Addus dirimpetto alla pianura.
14 When Trypho learned that Simon had taken the place of his brother Jonathan and that he intendedto join battle with him, he sent envoys to him with this message,	14 Ma avendo inteso Trifone, come in luogo di Gionata era subentrato il suo fratello Simone, e che questi volea venir seco a battaglia, mandò a lui ambasciadori,
15 'Your brother Jonathan was in debt to the royal exchequer for the offices he held; that is why we aredetaining him.	15 Perché gli dicessero: Abbiam ritenuto Gionata tuo fratello per ragion del denaro, di cui era debitore alla cassa del re, a titolo del negozi, che egli amministrano.
16 If you send a hundred talents of silver and two of his sons as hostages, to make sure that on hisrelease he does not revolt against us, we shal release him.'	16 Or tu manda cento talenti d'argento, e i due suoi figliuoli in ostaggio, affinché messo in libertà non abbandoni il nostro partito, e noi lo rimanderemo.
17 Although Simon was aware that the message was a ruse, he sent for the money and the boys forfear of incurring great hostility from the people,	17 E Simone ben comprese, che quegli parlava seco con fraude: con tutto questo ordinò, che si desse il denaro e i fanciulli, per non tirarsi addosso la malevoglienza del popolo d'Israele, che direbbe:
18 who would have said that Jonathan had died because Simon would not send Trypho the money andthe children.	18 Perché egli non ha mandato il denaro e i fanciulli, per questo Gionata è morto.
19 He therefore sent both the boys and the hundred talents, but Trypho broke his word and did notrelease Jonathan.	19 Ed egli mandò i fanciulli e i cento talenti: ma quegli mancò di parola, e non rimandò Gionata.
20 Next, Trypho set about the invasion and devastation of the country; he made a detour along theAdora road, but Simon and his army confronted him wherever he attempted to go.	20 E dipoi Trifone entrò nel paese per devastarlo: e si volsero a prendere la strada, che mena ad Ador, e Simone col suo esercito li seguitavano dovunque andassero.
21 The men in the Citadel kept sending messengers to Trypho, urging him to get through to them byway of the desert and send them supplies.	21 Ma quelli che erano nella cittadella mandarono a dire a Trifone, che venisse con sollecitudine dalla parte del deserto, e mandasse loro de' viveri.
22 Trypho organised his entire cavalry to go, but that night it snowed so heavily that he could not getthrough for the snow, so he left there and moved off into Gilead.	22 E Trifone mise in ordine tutta la cavalleria per partir quella notte: ma essendo la neve in grandissima copia, egli non entrò nel paese di Galaad.
23 As he approached Baskama he kil ed Jonathan, who was buried there.	23 Ma avvicinandosi a Bascaman, ivi uccise Gionata e i suoi figliuoli.
24 Trypho turned back and regained his own country.	24 E Trifone si voltò indietro, e se ne andò al suo paese.
25 Simon sent and recovered the bones of his brother Jonathan, and buried him in Modein, the town ofhis ancestors.	25 E Simone mandò a prendere le ossa di Gionata suo fratello, e le seppellì in Modin patria de' loro padri.
26 Al Israel kept solemn mourning for him and long bewailed him.	26 E tutto Israele menò gran duolo per lui, e lo piansero per molto tempo.
27 Over the tomb of his father and brothers, Simon raised a monument high enough to catch the eye,using dressed stone back and front.	27 E Simone sopra il sepolcro del padre suo e dei suoi fratelli, alzò una fabbrica alta un'occhiata, di pietra tagliata nel dinanzi e nel di dietro:
28 He erected seven pyramids facing each other, for his father and mother and his four brothers,	28 E vi collocò sette piramidi, l'una di rimpetto all'altra, al padre, alla madre e ai quattro fratelli:
29 surrounding them with a structure consisting of tal columns surmounted by trophies of arms to theireverlasting memory and, beside the trophies of arms, ships sculpted on a scale to be seen by al who sail thesea.	29 E intorno ad esse pose delle grandi colonne; e sopra le colonne pose delle armi per eterna memoria; e presso alle armi, delle navi scolpite, le quali si vedessero da tutti quelli che navigassero per quel mare.
30 Such was the monument he constructed at Modein, and it is stil there today.	30 Tale e' il sepolcro edificato da lui in Modin, che si vede anche in oggi.
31 Now Trypho, betraying the trust of young King Antiochus, put him to death.	31 Ma Trifone essendo in viaggio col giovinetto re Antioco, lo uccise con inganno.
32 He usurped his throne, assuming the crown of Asia, and brought great havoc on the country.	32 E regnò in sua vece, e si cinse il diodema dell'Asia, e riempiè il paese di stragi.
33 Simon built up the fortresses of Judaea, surrounding them with high towers, great wal s and gateswith bolts, and stocked these fortresses with food.	33 Ma Simone ristorò le fortezze della Giudea, e le rinforzo con alle torri e salde mura e porte e sbarre; e mise viveri nelle fortezze.
34 He also sent a delegation to King Demetrius, to get him to grant the province a remission, since alTrypho did was to despoil.	34 E Simone mandò deputati al re Demetrio per pregarlo di concedere l'immunità al paese; perocchè tutti gli alti di Trifone erano stati tanti ladrocinj.
35 King Demetrius replied to his request in a letter framed as fol ows:	35 E il re Demetrio rispose alla domanda, e scrisse lettera di tal tenore:
36 'King Demetrius to Simon, high priest and Friend of Kings, and to the elders and nation of the Jews,greetings.	36 Il re Demetrio a Simone sommo Sacerdote e amico dei re, e ai seniori e al popolo de' Giudei, salute.
37 'It has pleased us to accept the golden crown and the palm you have sent us, and we are disposedto make a general peace with you, and to write to the officials to grant you remissions.	37 Abbiam ricevuto la corona d'oro e la palma mandata da voi; e siamo disposti a far con voi buona pace, e a scrivere agli agenti del re di condonarvi quello che noi vi abbiom condonato.
38 Everything that we have decreed concerning you remains in force, and the fortresses you have builtmay remain in your hands.	38 Perocchè debb' esser rato tutto quello, che vi abbiam conceduto: le fortezze edificate da voi sieno vostre.
39 We pardon all offences, unwitting or intentional, hitherto committed, and remit the crown tax you nowowe us; and whatever other taxes were levied in Jerusalem are no longer to be levied.	39 Vi rimettiamo eziandio i mancamenti e i torti fino a questi dì, e la corona, di cui eravate debitori: e se altra gravezza si pagava in Gerusalemme, omai cessi.
40 If any of you are suitable for enrolment in our bodyguard, let them be enrol ed, and let there bepeace between us.'	40 E se havvi tra voi chi sia capace di esser arruolato nelle nostre milizie, si arruoli, e sia tra noi pace.
41 The gentile yoke was thus lifted from Israel in the year 170,	41 L'anno cento settanta Israele scosse il giogo dei Greci.
42 when our people began engrossing their documents and contracts: 'In the first year of Simon,eminent high priest, commander-in-chief and ethnarch of the Jews'.	42 E il popolo d'Israele cominciò a contare nè monumenti e negli atti pubblici dall'anno primo sotto Simone sommo Sacerdote, gran condottiero e principe dei Giudei.
43 About that time Simon laid siege to Gezer, surrounding it with his troops. He constructed a mobiletower, brought it up to the city, opened a breach in one of the bastions and took it.	43 In quel tempo Simone si accostò a Gaza, e la circondò coll'esercito, e alzò le macchine, e le spinse contro la città, e batte una torre, e la prese.
44 The men in the mobile tower sprang out into the city, where great confusion ensued.	44 E quelli che stavano in una delle macchine entrarono con furia nella città; e questa fu in gran tumulto.
45 The citizens, accompanied by their wives and children, mounted the ramparts with their garmentstorn and loudly implored Simon to make peace with them:	45 E i cittadini salirono colle moglie coi figliuoli sulle mura, stracciate le vesti, e gridavano ad alta voce pregando Simone a dar loro la pace,
46 'Treat us', they said, 'not as our wickedness deserves, but as your mercy prompts you.'	46 E dicevano: Non voler trattarci secondo la nostra malvagità, ma secondo la tua clemenza.
47 Simon came to terms with them and stopped the fighting; but he expel ed them from the city, purifiedthe houses which contained idols, and then made his entry with songs of praise.	47 E Simone si lasciò piegare, e non li punì; ma però li cacciò dalla città, e purificò le case, dove erano stati simulacri: e poi vi entrò dentro cantando inni in lode del Signore.
48 He banished al impurity from it, settled in it people who observed the Law, and having fortified it,built a residence there for himself.	48 E toltone tutte le immondezze, la fece abitare da gente che osservasse la legge, e la fortificò, e vi fece una casa per sè.
49 The occupants of the Citadel in Jerusalem, prevented as they were from coming out and going intothe countryside to buy and sel , were in desperate need of food, and numbers of them were being carried off bystarvation.	49 Ma quelli, che stavano nella cittadella di Gerusalemme non potendo andare, e stare pel paese, ne vendere, né comprare, si ridussero a una gran carestia, e molti di essi moriron di fame.
50 They begged Simon to make peace with them, and he granted this, though he expel ed them andpurified the Citadel from its pollutions.	50 E gridavano a Simone, che desse loro la pace; ed egli la concesse; e cacciolti di là, e purficò la cittadella dalle immondezze.
51 The Jews made their entry on the twenty-third day of the second month in the year 171, withacclamations and carrying palms, to the sound of lyres, cymbals and harps, chanting hymns and canticles, sincea great enemy had been crushed and thrown out of Israel. Simon made it a day of annual rejoicing.	51 E i Giudei vi entraron dentro ai ventitre del secondo mese, l'anno cento settant'uno con rami di palme, e cantando laude al suono di arpe cimbali, e lire, con inni e cantici perché era stato tolto via un nemico grande d'Israele.
52 He fortified the Temple hil on the Citadel side, and took up residence there with his men.	52 E Simone ordinò, che si solennizzassero ogni anno quei giorni con gaudio.
53 Since his son John had come to manhood, Simon appointed him general-in-chief, with his residencein Gezer.	53 E fortificò il monte del tempio, che era presso alla cittadella, e ivi abitò egli coi suoi.
	54 E Simone avendo riconosciuto, che Giovanni suo figliuolo era uomo di gran valore, lo creò capitano di tutte le schiere, ed egli facea residenza a Gazara.
