1 Maccabees 13

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 Simon heard that Trypho had col ected a large army to invade and devastate Judaea,	1 Supo Simón que había juntado Trifón un ejército numeroso para ir a devastar el país de Judá.
2 and when he saw how the people were quaking with fear, he went up to Jerusalem, cal ed the peopletogether,	2 Viendo al pueblo espantado y medroso, subió a Jerusalén, reunió al pueblo
3 and exhorted them thus, 'You know yourselves how much I and my brothers and my father's familyhave done for the laws and the sanctuary; you know what wars and hardships we have experienced.	3 y le exhortó diciendo: «Vosotros sabéis todo lo que hemos hecho mis hermanos, la casa de mi padre y yo por la Ley y el Lugar Santo, y las guerras y tribulaciones que hemos sufrido.
4 That is why my brothers are all dead, for Israel's sake, and I am the only one left.	4 Por esta causa, por Israel, han muerto mis hermanos todos y he quedado yo solo.
5 Far be it from me, then, to be sparing of my own life in any time of oppression, for I am not worth morethan my brothers.	5 Lejos de mí ahora mirar por salvar mi vida en cualquier tiempo de angustia, que no soy yo mejor que mis hermanos;
6 Rather wil I avenge my nation and the sanctuary and your wives and children, now that the foreignersare al united in malice to destroy us.'	6 sino que vengaré a mi nación, al Lugar Santo y a vuestras mujeres e hijos, puesto que, impulsados por el odio, se han unido todos los gentiles para aniquilarnos».
7 The people's spirit rekindled as they listened to his words,	7 Al oír estas palabras, se enardecieron los ánimos del pueblo
8 and they shouted back at him, 'You are our leader in place of Judas and your brother Jonathan.	8 y respondieron en alta voz diciendo: «Tú eres nuestro guía en lugar de Judas y de tu hermano Jonatán;
9 Fight our battles for us, and we wil do whatever you tel us.'	9 toma la dirección de nuestra guerra y haremos cuanto nos mandes».
10 So he assembled al the fighting men and hurried on with completing the wal s of Jerusalem,fortifying the whole perimeter.	10 Reunió entonces Simón a todos los hombres aptos para la guerra y se dio prisa en acabar las murallas de Jerusalén hasta que la fortificó en todo su contorno.
11 He sent a considerable force to Joppa under Jonathan son of Absalom who drove out the inhabitantsand remained there in occupation.	11 Envió a Jonatán, hijo de Absalón, a Joppe con un importante destacamento, el cual expulsó a los que en la ciudad estaban y se estableció en ella.
12 Trypho now left Ptolemais with a large army to invade Judaea, taking Jonathan with him underguard.	12 Partió Trifón de Tolemaida con un ejercito numeroso para entrar en el país de Judá llevando consigo prisionero a Jonatán.
13 Simon pitched camp in Adida, facing the plain.	13 Simón puso su campamento en Jadidá, frente a la llanura.
14 When Trypho learned that Simon had taken the place of his brother Jonathan and that he intendedto join battle with him, he sent envoys to him with this message,	14 Al enterarse Trifón de que Simón había sucedido en el mando a su hermano Jonatán y que estaba preparado para entrar con él en batalla, le envió mensajeros diciéndole:
15 'Your brother Jonathan was in debt to the royal exchequer for the offices he held; that is why we aredetaining him.	15 «Tenemos detenido a tu hermano Jonatán por las deudas contraídas con el tesoro real en el desempeño de su cargo.
16 If you send a hundred talents of silver and two of his sons as hostages, to make sure that on hisrelease he does not revolt against us, we shal release him.'	16 Envíanos, pues, cien talentos de plata y a dos de sus hijos como rehenes, no sea que una vez libre se rebele contra nosotros. Entonces le soltaremos».
17 Although Simon was aware that the message was a ruse, he sent for the money and the boys forfear of incurring great hostility from the people,	17 Simón, aunque se dio cuenta de que le hablaban con falsedad, envió a buscar el dinero y los niños para no provocar contra sí una gran enemistad del pueblo que diría:
18 who would have said that Jonathan had died because Simon would not send Trypho the money andthe children.	18 «Porque no envié yo el dinero y los niños, ha muerto Jonatán».
19 He therefore sent both the boys and the hundred talents, but Trypho broke his word and did notrelease Jonathan.	19 Envió, pues, los niños y los cien talentos, pero Trifón faltó a su palabra y no soltó a Jonatán.
20 Next, Trypho set about the invasion and devastation of the country; he made a detour along theAdora road, but Simon and his army confronted him wherever he attempted to go.	20 Después de esto, se puso Trifón en marcha para invadir la región y devastarla. Dio un rodeo por el camino de Adorá, mientras Simón y su ejército obstaculizaban su marcha dondequiera que iba.
21 The men in the Citadel kept sending messengers to Trypho, urging him to get through to them byway of the desert and send them supplies.	21 Los de la Ciudadela enviaron a Trifón legados dándole prisa a que viniese donde ellos a través del desierto y les enviase víveres.
22 Trypho organised his entire cavalry to go, but that night it snowed so heavily that he could not getthrough for the snow, so he left there and moved off into Gilead.	22 Preparó Trifón toda su caballería para ir, pero aquella noche cayó tal cantidad de nieve que le impidió acudir allá. Partió de allí y se fue a la región de Galaad.
23 As he approached Baskama he kil ed Jonathan, who was buried there.	23 Cuando se encontraba cerca de Bascamá, hizo matar a Jonatán, que fue enterrado allí.
24 Trypho turned back and regained his own country.	24 Luego dio Trifón la vuelta y se marchó a su país.
25 Simon sent and recovered the bones of his brother Jonathan, and buried him in Modein, the town ofhis ancestors.	25 Envió Simón a recoger los huesos de su hermano Jonatán y le dio sepultura en Modín, ciudad de sus padres.
26 Al Israel kept solemn mourning for him and long bewailed him.	26 Todo Israel hizo gran duelo por él y le lloró muchos días.
27 Over the tomb of his father and brothers, Simon raised a monument high enough to catch the eye,using dressed stone back and front.	27 Simón construyó sobre el sepulcro de su padre y sus hermanos un mausoleo alto, que pudiera verse, de piedras pulidas por delante y por detrás.
28 He erected seven pyramids facing each other, for his father and mother and his four brothers,	28 Levantó siete pirámides, una frente a otra, dedicadas a su padre, a su madre y a sus cuatro hermanos.
29 surrounding them with a structure consisting of tal columns surmounted by trophies of arms to theireverlasting memory and, beside the trophies of arms, ships sculpted on a scale to be seen by al who sail thesea.	29 Levantó alrededor de ellas grandes columnas y sobre las columnas hizo panoplias para recuerdo eterno. Al lado de las panoplias esculpió unas naves que pudieran ser contempladas por todos los que navegaran por el mar.
30 Such was the monument he constructed at Modein, and it is stil there today.	30 Tal fue el mausoleo que construyó en Modín y que subsiste en nuestros días.
31 Now Trypho, betraying the trust of young King Antiochus, put him to death.	31 Trifón, procediendo insidiosamente con el joven rey Antíoco, le dio muerte.
32 He usurped his throne, assuming the crown of Asia, and brought great havoc on the country.	32 Ocupó el reino en su lugar, se ciñó la diadema de Asia y causó grandes estragos en el país.
33 Simon built up the fortresses of Judaea, surrounding them with high towers, great wal s and gateswith bolts, and stocked these fortresses with food.	33 Simón, por su parte, reconstruyó las fortalezas de Judea, las rodeó de altas torres y grandes murallas con puertas y cerrojos, y almacenó víveres en ellas.
34 He also sent a delegation to King Demetrius, to get him to grant the province a remission, since alTrypho did was to despoil.	34 Además escogió Simón hombres que envió al rey Demetrio intentando conseguir una remisión para la región, dado que toda la actividad de Trifón había sido un continuo robo.
35 King Demetrius replied to his request in a letter framed as fol ows:	35 El rey Demetrio contestó a su petición y le escribió la siguiente carta:
36 'King Demetrius to Simon, high priest and Friend of Kings, and to the elders and nation of the Jews,greetings.	36 «El rey Demetrio saluda a Simón, sumo sacerdote y amigo de reyes, a los ancianos y a la nación de los judíos.
37 'It has pleased us to accept the golden crown and the palm you have sent us, and we are disposedto make a general peace with you, and to write to the officials to grant you remissions.	37 Hemos recibido la corona de oro y la palma que nos habéis enviado y estamos dispuestos a concertar con vosotros una paz completa y a escribir a los funcionarios que os concedan la remisión de las deudas.
38 Everything that we have decreed concerning you remains in force, and the fortresses you have builtmay remain in your hands.	38 Cuanto hemos decidido sobre vosotros, quede firme y sean vuestras las fortalezas que habéis construido.
39 We pardon all offences, unwitting or intentional, hitherto committed, and remit the crown tax you nowowe us; and whatever other taxes were levied in Jerusalem are no longer to be levied.	39 Os perdonamos los errores y delitos cometidos hasta el día de hoy y la corona que nos debéis. Si algún otro tributo se percibía en Jerusalén, ya no se exija.
40 If any of you are suitable for enrolment in our bodyguard, let them be enrol ed, and let there bepeace between us.'	40 Y si algunos de vosotros son aptos para alistarse en nuestra guardia, alístense y haya paz entre nosotros».
41 The gentile yoke was thus lifted from Israel in the year 170,	41 El año 170 quedó Israel libre del yugo de los gentiles
42 when our people began engrossing their documents and contracts: 'In the first year of Simon,eminent high priest, commander-in-chief and ethnarch of the Jews'.	42 y el pueblo comenzó a escribir en las actas y contratos: «En el año primero de Simón, gran sumo sacerdote, estratega y hegumeno de los judíos.
43 About that time Simon laid siege to Gezer, surrounding it with his troops. He constructed a mobiletower, brought it up to the city, opened a breach in one of the bastions and took it.	43 Por aquellos días puso cerco Simón a Gázara y la rodeó con sus tropas. Construyó una torre móvil que acercó a la ciudad y abriendo brecha en un baluarte, lo tomó.
44 The men in the mobile tower sprang out into the city, where great confusion ensued.	44 Saltaron los de la torre a la ciudad y se produjo en ella gran agitación.
45 The citizens, accompanied by their wives and children, mounted the ramparts with their garmentstorn and loudly implored Simon to make peace with them:	45 Los habitantes, rasgados los vestidos, subieron a la muralla con sus mujeres e hijos y pidieron a grandes gritos a Simón que les diese la mano.
46 'Treat us', they said, 'not as our wickedness deserves, but as your mercy prompts you.'	46 «No nos trates, le decían, según nuestras maldades, sino según tu misericordia».
47 Simon came to terms with them and stopped the fighting; but he expel ed them from the city, purifiedthe houses which contained idols, and then made his entry with songs of praise.	47 Simón se reconcilió con ellos y no les atacó, pero les echó de la ciudad y mandó purificar las casas en que había ídolos. Entonces entró en ella con himnos y bendiciones.
48 He banished al impurity from it, settled in it people who observed the Law, and having fortified it,built a residence there for himself.	48 Echó de ella toda impureza, estableció en ella hombres observantes de la Ley, la fortificó y se construyó en ella para sí una residencia.
49 The occupants of the Citadel in Jerusalem, prevented as they were from coming out and going intothe countryside to buy and sel , were in desperate need of food, and numbers of them were being carried off bystarvation.	49 Los de la Ciudadela de Jerusalén se veían imposibilitados de entrar y salir por la región, de comprar y de vender. Sufrían grave escasez y bastantes de ellos habían perecido de hambre.
50 They begged Simon to make peace with them, and he granted this, though he expel ed them andpurified the Citadel from its pollutions.	50 Clamaron a Simón que hiciera con ellos la paz y Simón se lo concedió. Les echó de allí y purificó de inmundicias la Ciudadela.
51 The Jews made their entry on the twenty-third day of the second month in the year 171, withacclamations and carrying palms, to the sound of lyres, cymbals and harps, chanting hymns and canticles, sincea great enemy had been crushed and thrown out of Israel. Simon made it a day of annual rejoicing.	51 Entraron en ella el día veintitrés del segundo mes del año 171 con aclamaciones y ramos de palma, con liras, címbalos y arpas, con himnos y cantos, porque un gran enemigo había sido vencido y expulsado de Israel.
52 He fortified the Temple hil on the Citadel side, and took up residence there with his men.	52 Simón dispuso que este día se celebrara con júbilo cada año. Fortificó el monte del Templo que está al lado de la Ciudadela y habitó allí con los suyos.
53 Since his son John had come to manhood, Simon appointed him general-in-chief, with his residencein Gezer.	53 Y viendo Simón que su hijo Juan era todo un hombre, le nombró jefe de todas las fuerzas con residencia en Gázara.
