1 In the year 160, Alexander, son of Antiochus Epiphanes, raised an army and occupied Ptolemais. Hewas wel received, and there inaugurated his reign.	1 L'anno centosessanta, Alessandro, figlio di Antioco, soprannominato l'illustre, andò ad occupar Tolemaide, e vi fu ben accolto e vi cominciò a regnare,
2 On hearing this, King Demetrius assembled a very large army and marched off to do battle with him.	2 il re Demetrio, saputa la cosa, radunò numerosissimo esercito, e s'avanzò contro di lui per combatterlo.
3 Demetrius furthermore sent Jonathan a most conciliatory letter, promising to promote him in rank,	3 In quella circostanza Demetrio mandò a Gionata lettere con parole di amicizia, da accrescerne la dignità.
4 for, as he said, 'We had better move first to come to terms with these people before he makescommon cause with Alexander against us;	4 « Affrettiamoci — diceva — a far pace con lui, prima che egli la faccia con Alessandro contro di noi.

6 He even authorised him to raise an army, to manufacture arms, and to describe himself as his al y,and ordered the hostages in the Citadel to be surrendered to him.	6 E lo autorizzava a mettere insieme un esercito e a fabbricare armi, lo faceva suo confederato, e comandava che gli fossero consegnati gli ostaggi che erano nella cittadella.

10 Jonathan then took up residence in Jerusalem and began the rebuilding and restoration of the city.	10 E Gionata fissò la sua dimora in Gerusalemme, e cominciò a rifabbricare e a restaurare la città.

17 He therefore wrote him a letter, addressing him in these terms:	17 E scrisse e mandò a lui una lettera in cui gli diceva queste parole:
18 'King Alexander to his brother Jonathan, greetings.	18 « Il re Alessandro al fratello Gionata, salute.
19 'You have been brought to our notice as a strong man of action and as someone who deserves to beour friend.	19 Abbiamo sentito parlare di te, e dire che sei un uomo di gran valore e degno d'essere nostro amico.
20 Accordingly, we have today appointed you high priest of your nation, with the title of "Friend of theKing" ' -- he also sent him a purple robe and a golden crown-'and you are to study our interests and maintainfriendly relations with us.'	20 Or dunque noi ti costituiamo sommo sacerdote della tua nazione, e vogliamo che tu abbia il titolo di amico del re — e gli mandò la porpora e la corona d'oro — e prenda parte con noi ai nostri affari, e ci conservi l'amicizia ».
21 Jonathan put on the sacred vestments in the seventh month of the year 160, on the feast of Shelters;he then set about raising troops and manufacturing arms in quantity.	21 E Gionata si vestì della stola santa, l'anno centosessanta, il settimo mese, nella festa dei Tabernacoli; e radunò l'esercito, e fece fabbricare gran quantità di armi.
22 Demetrius was displeased when he heard what had happened.	22 Sapute queste cose, Demetrio ne restò moltissimo afflitto, e disse:
23 'What have we been doing,' he said, 'for Alexander to forestal us in winning the friendship of theJews and so improving his own position?	23 Che abbiam fatto? Alessandro ci ha prevenuti nell'acquistarsi l'amicizia dei Giudei, per rendersi più forte.
24 I too shall address an appeal to them, offering them advancement and riches as an inducement tosupport me.'	24 Scriverò anch'io ad essi con parole di scongiuro, di dignità, di doni, perchè vengano con me ad aiutarmi ».
25 And he wrote to them as fol ows: 'King Demetrius to the Jewish nation, greetings.	25 E scrisse loro in questi termini: « Il re Demetrio alla nazione dei Giudei, salute.
26 'We have heard how you have kept your agreement with us and have maintained friendly relationswith us and have not gone over to our enemies, and it has given us great satisfaction.	26 Abbiamo sentito che avete mantenuta l'alleanza fatta con noi, che siete rimasti nella nostra amicizia, che non vi siete uniti coi nostri nemici, e ne abbiamo avuto piacere.
27 If you now continue to keep faith with us, we shal make you a handsome return for what you do onour behalf.	27 Or dunque continuate a restarci fedeli, e vi ricompenseremo, con benefizi, di quel che avete fatto per noi.
28 We shal accord you many exemptions and grant you privileges.	28 Vi libereremo da molte gravezze e vi concederemo dei favori.
29 'Henceforth I release you and exempt al the Jews from the tribute, the salt dues and the crownlevies,	29 Fin da ora esento voi e tutti i Giudei dai tributi, vi condono il prezzo del sale, vi rimetto le corone e la terza parte del seme;
30 and whereas I am entitled to one-third of the grain and one-half of the fruit of the trees, I release fromthis levy, from today and for the future, Judaea and the three districts annexed to it from Samaria-Galilee, fromthis day henceforth in perpetuity.	30 e la metà dei frutti delle piante, che è di mia parte, la rilascio a voi per l'avvenire, fin da questo giorno, in modo che non si esiga più dalla terra di Giuda e dalle tre città a lei unite nella Samaria e dalla Galilea, da questo giorno per tutto il tempo avvenire.
31 Jerusalem wil be sacred and exempt, with its territory, from tithes and dues.	31 E Gerusalemme sia santa, e libera col suo territorio, e siano sue le decime e i tributi.
32 I relinquish control of the Citadel in Jerusalem and make it over to the high priest, so that he mayman it with a garrison of his own choosing.	32 Rimetto pure nelle vostre mani la cittadella che è in Gerusalemme, e la consegno al sommo sacerdote, affinchè vi metta a costodirla uomini da lui scelti.
33 Every Jewish person taken from Judaea into captivity in any part of my kingdom I set free withoutransom, and decree that al wil be exempt from taxes, even on their livestock.	33 E a tutti i Giudei menati schiavi dalla terra di Giuda, in qualunque parte si trovino del mio regno, rendo la libertà gratuitamente, esentandoli tutti dai tributi, anche dei loro bestiami.
34 Al festivals, Sabbaths, New Moons and days of special observance, and the three days before andthree days after a festival, wil be days of exemption and quittance for al the Jews in my kingdom,	34 E tutte le solennità, e i sabati, e i noviluni, e i giorni di precetto, e i tre giorni che precedono e i tre giorni che seguono una festa solenne, siano giorni d'immunità e di franchigia per tutti i Giudei che sono nel mio regno.
35 and no one wil have the right to exact payment from, or to molest, any of them for any matterwhatsoever.	35 Allora nessuno potrà agire contro di essi, o chiamarli in giudizio, per qualsiasi causa.
36 'Jews will be enrol ed in the king's forces to the number of thirty thousand men and receivemaintenance on the same scale as the rest of the king's forces.	36 E saranno arruolati nell'esercito del re fino a trenta mila Giudei, e sarà dato loro il soldo, come si deve dare a tutti gli eserciti del re, e da essi si sceglieranno alcuni che staranno nelle fortezze del gran re.
37 Some of them wil be stationed in the king's major fortresses, and from among others appointmentswil be made to positions of trust in the kingdom. Their officers and commanders will be appointed from their ownnumber and wil live under their own laws, as the king has prescribed for Judaea.	37 E tra questi si prenderanno delle persone da mettersi alla direzione degli affari del regno che esigono fedeltà. E i capi sian dei loro, e vivano secondo le loro leggi, come il re ha ordinato nella terra di Giuda.
38 'As regards the three districts annexed to Judaea from the province of Samaria, these wil beintegrated into Judaea and considered as coming under one governor, obeying the high priest's authority and noother.	38 E le tre città della provincia di Samaria annesse alla Giudea, sian contate come della Giudea, in modo che abbiano un sol capo, e non obbediscano ad altra autorità che quella del sommo sacerdote.
39 Ptolemais and the land thereto pertaining I present to the sanctuary in Jerusalem, to meet thenecessary expenses of public worship.	39 Dono Tolemaide col suo territorio al santuario che è in Gerusalemme, pel mantenimento del santuario.
40 And I make a personal grant of fifteen thousand silver shekels annual y chargeable to the royalrevenue from appropriate places.	40 Ed ogni anno dò quindici mila sicli d'argento sopra i diritti reali che mi appartengono.
41 And the entire surplus, which has not been paid in by the officials as in previous years, wilhenceforth be paid over by them for work on the Temple.	41 E tutto quello che è restato indietro, e che non è stato pagato dagli amministratori negli anni passati, da qui in poi sarà dato pel servizio della casa.
42 In addition, the sum of five thousand silver shekels, levied annual y on the profits of the sanctuary, asshown in the annual accounts, is also relinquished as the perquisite of the priests who perform the liturgy.	42 Inoltre i cinque mila sicli d'argento che riscotevano ogni anno per conto del santuario, anche questi appartengono ai sacerdoti che esercitano le funzioni del ministero.
43 Anyone who takes refuge in the Temple in Jerusalem or any of its precincts, when in debt to theroyal exchequer or otherwise, wil be discharged in ful possession of al the goods he owns in my kingdom.	43 E tutti quelli che, debitori del re per qualsivoglia titolo, si rifugieranno nel tempio che è in Gerusalemme e dentro tutta la sua cinta, sian liberi e godano liberamente di tutti i loro beni che hanno nel mio regno.
44 As regards the building and restoration of the sanctuary, the expense of the work wil be met fromthe royal exchequer.	44 E per le costruzioni e i restauri del santuario saran dati i mezzi per conto del re.
45 The reconstruction of the walls of Jerusalem and the fortification of the perimeter will also be acharge on the royal exchequer, as also the reconstruction of other city wal s in Judaea.'	45 E per ricostruire le mura di Gerusalemme, e per fortificarne la cinta saran dati i mezzi per conto del re, così pure per alzare le (altre) mura nella Giudea ».
46 When Jonathan and the people heard these proposals, they put no faith in them and refused toaccept them, remembering what great wrongs Demetrius had done to Israel and how cruel y he had oppressedthem.	46 Quando Gionata e il popolo ebbero sentite queste parole, non ci credettero e non le accettarono, perchè si ricordavano dei grandi mali che (Demetrio) aveva fatti a Israele, e come li aveva oltremodo straziati.
47 They decided in favour of Alexander, since he seemed to offer the better inducements of the two,and they became his constant al ies.	47 Si decisero adunque in favore di Alessandro, perchè egli era per essi il primo (a mettere in pratica) le parole della pace; e gli dettero per sempre aiuto.
48 King Alexander now mustered large forces and advanced against Demetrius.	48 Or il re Alessandro, radunato un grande esercito, mosse il campo contro Demetrio.
49 The two kings met in battle. Alexander's army was routed, and Demetrius pursued him and defeatedhis troops.	49 E i due re vennero a battaglia e l'esercito di Demetrio si diede alla fuga, inseguito da Alessandro, che gli diede addosso.
50 He continued the battle with vigour until sunset. Demetrius himself, however, was kil ed the sameday.	50 E la battaglia divenne sempre più fiera fino al tramonto del sole, e in quel giorno morì Demetrio.
51 Alexander sent ambassadors to Ptolemy king of Egypt, with this message:	51 E il re Alessandro, mandati ambasciatori a Tolomeo re d'Egitto, gli fece dire queste parole:
52 'Since I have returned to my kingdom, have ascended the throne of my ancestors, have gainedcontrol by crushing Demetrius, and so recovered our country-	52 « Io sono rientrato nel mio regno, seggo sul trono dei miei padri, ho conquistato lo stato, ho schiacciato Demetrio, ho preso il possesso dei miei dominii.
53 for I fought him and we crushed both him and his army, and I now occupy his royal throne-	53 Son venuto con lui a battaglia, ed egli è restato da me sconfitto con tutto il suo esercito, e mi sono assiso sul trono del suo regno.
54 let us now make a treaty of friendship. Give me your daughter in marriage: as your son-in-law, I shalgive you, and her, presents which are worthy of you.'	54 Or dunque facciamo amicizia tra noi, dammi in moglie la tua figliola, ed io sarò tuo genero, e farò a te e a lei doni degni di te ».
55 King Ptolemy replied as follows: 'Happy the day when you returned to the land of your ancestors andascended their royal throne!	55 Il re Tolomeo rispose in questi termini: « Felice quel giorno in cui sei tornato nella terra dei tuoi padri, e ti sei assiso sul trono del loro regno!
56 I shal at once do for you what your letter proposes; but meet me at Ptolemais, so that we can seeone another, and I shall become your father-in-law, as you have asked.'	56 Or io ti farò quello che hai scritto: però vieni a incontrarmi a Tolemaide, affinchè ci vediamo insieme, e ti dia la sposa, come hai detto ».
57 Ptolemy left Egypt with his daughter Cleopatra and reached Ptolemais in the year 162.	57 Tolomeo, partito dall'Egitto, l'anno centosessantadue, con Cleopatra sua figlia, andò a Tolemaide.
58 King Alexander went to meet him, and Ptolemy gave him the hand of his daughter Cleopatra andcelebrated her wedding in Ptolemais with great magnificence, as kings do.	58 Ed essendogli andato incontro il re Alessandro, gli diede la sua figlia Cleopatra, e a Tolemaide furono fatte le nozze, secondo il costume dei re, con grande magnificenza.
59 King Alexander then wrote to Jonathan to come and meet him.	59 E il re Alessandro scrisse a Gionata che andasse a trovarlo.
60 Jonathan made his way in state to Ptolemais and met the two kings; he gave them and their friendssilver and gold, and many gifts, and made a favourable impression on them.	60 E Gionata andò con pompa a Tolemaide, andò a trovare i due re, diede loro gran quantità d'oro, d'argento e di doni, e trovò grazia nel loro cospetto.
61 A number of scoundrels, the pest of Israel, combined to denounce him, but the king paid no attentionto them.	61 Ma alcuni uomini pestilenziali d'Israele, iniqui, s'unirono contro di lui per accusarlo; ma il re non diede loro ascolto.
62 In fact, the king commanded that Jonathan should be divested of his own garments and clothed inthe purple, which was done.	62 E ordinò che Gionata fosse spogliato delle sue vesti e rivestito di porpora. E così fu fatto. Il re lo fece sedere accanto a sè,
63 The king then seated him by his side and said to his officers, 'Escort him into the centre of the cityand proclaim that no one is to bring charges against him on any count; no one is to molest him for any reason.'	63 e disse ai suoi grandi: « Andate con lui nel mezzo della città, e bandite che nessuno porti accuse contro di lui, per qualsivoglia causa, e che nessuno, per qualsiasi ragione, gli rechi molestia.
64 And so, when his accusers saw the honour done him by this proclamation, and Jonathan himselfinvested in the purple, they all fled.	64 Quando gli accusatori videro come era onorato, quello che era bandito, e come era vestito di porpora, fuggirono tutti.
65 The king did him the honour of enrol ing him among the First Friends, and appointed himcommander-in-chief and governor-general.	65 E il re lo innalzò a dignità, lo ascrisse fra i primi suoi amici, lo fece condottiero e partecipe del principato.
66 Jonathan then returned to Jerusalem in peace and gladness.	66 E Gionata con pace e allegrezza tornò a Gerusalemme.
67 In the year 165, Demetrius son of Demetrius came from Crete to the land of his ancestors.	67 L'anno centosessantacinque, Demetrio, figlio di Demetrio, venne da Creta nella terra dei suoi padri.
68 When King Alexander heard of it he was plunged into gloom, and retired to Antioch.	68 A questa notizia il re Alessandro si rattristò oltremodo, e tornò ad Antiochia.
69 Demetrius confirmed Apol onius as governor of Coele-Syria; the latter assembled a large force,encamped at Jamnia and sent the fol owing message to Jonathan the high priest:	69 E il re Demetrio fece suo generale Apollonio, governatore della Celesiria, il quale, raccolto un grande esercito, si accostò a Iamnia, e mandò dire a Gionata, sommo sacerdote:
70 'You are entirely alone in rising against us, and now I find myself ridiculed and reproached on youraccount. Why do you use your authority to our disadvantage in the mountains?	70 « Tu solo ci resisti, ed io sono oggetto di derisioni e di scherni, perchè tu ti fai forte contro di noi sulle montagne.
71 If you are so confident in your forces, come down now to meet us on the plain and let us take eachother's measure there; on my side I have the strength of the towns.	71 Or dunque, se tu hai fiducia nelle tue schiere, scendi verso di noi nel piano, e misuriamoci insieme, perchè io ho meco il fiore dei combattenti.
72 Ask and learn who I am and who the others supporting us are. You will hear that you cannot standup to us, since your ancestors were twice routed on their own ground,	72 Informati, e saprai chi sono io, e chi sono quelli che mi aiutano, i quali dicono che voi non potete reggervi in piedi dinanzi a noi, chè già due volte furon messi in fuga i tuoi padri nel loro paese.
73 nor wil you now be able to withstand the cavalry or so great an army on the plain, where there isneither rock, nor stone, nor refuge of any kind.'	73 Ed ora come potrai sostenere l'urto della cavalleria e di sì grande esercito in una pianura, dove non c'è nè pietra, nè masso, nè luogo di rifugio? »
74 On hearing Apollonius' words, Jonathan's spirit was roused; he picked ten thousand men and leftJerusalem, and his brother Simon joined him with reinforcements.	74 Gionata, udite le parole di Apollonio, ne restò punto, e, scelti dieci mila uomini, partì da Gerusalemme, e si unì a lui, per soccorrerlo, Simone, suo fratello.
75 He drew up his forces outside Joppa, the citizens having shut him out, since Apol onius had agarrison in Joppa. When they began the attack,	75 E andarono a porre il campo presso Ioppe; ma quelli della città gli chiusero le porte ( essendo Ioppe occupata da un presidio d'Apollonio): allora egli l'assediò.
76 the citizens took fright and opened the gates, and Jonathan occupied Joppa.	76 Spaventati, quelli che si trovavano nella città gli aprirono le porte, e Gionata occupò Ioppe.
77 Hearing this, Apol onius marshal ed three thousand cavalry and a large army and made his way toAzotus as though intending to march through, while in fact pressing on into the plain, since he had a greatnumber of cavalry on which he was relying.	77 Informato di ciò, Apollonio si mosse con tre mila, cavalli e numeroso esercito, e subito uscì in campo, perchè aveva molta cavalleria in cui fidava.
78 Jonathan pursued him as far as Azotus, where the armies joined battle.	78 Ma Gionata gli tenne dietro verso Azoto, e attaccarono battaglia.
79 Now, Apol onius had left a thousand horsemen in concealment behind them.	79 Or Apollonio aveva lasciati nascosti dietro di lui nel campo mille cavalieri;
80 Jonathan knew of this enemy position behind him; the horsemen surrounded his army, firing theirarrows into his men from morning til evening.	80 ma Gionata ne fu informato che gli erano tese insidie alle spalle. E circondarono la sua gente e gettarono sopra di essa dardi dalla mattina fino alla sera;
81 But the troops stood firm, as Jonathan had ordered. Once the cavalry was exhausted,	81 ma i suoi uomini stavan fermi, secondo il comando di Gionata, e i cavalli dei nemici si stancarono.
82 Simon sent his own troops into attack against the phalanx, which he cut to pieces and routed.	82 Allora Simone spinse avanti il suo esercito, e attaccò la fanteria, essendo spossata la cavalleria, e li ruppe e li mise in fuga.
83 The cavalry scattered over the plain and fled to Azotus, where they took sanctuary in Beth-Dagon,the temple of their idol.	83 E quelli che eran dispersi per la pianura fuggirono ad Azoto, ed entrarono nel tempio di Dagon, loro idolo, per avervi scampo.
84 Jonathan, however, set fire to Azotus and the surrounding towns, plundered them, and burned downthe temple of Dagon, with al the fugitives who had crowded into it.	84 Ma Gionata diede alle fiamme Azoto e le città circonvicine, e ne prese le spoglie, e bruciò il tempio di Dagon e tutti quelli che vi si erano rifugiati.
85 The enemy losses, counting those who fell by the sword and those burnt to death, total ed abouteight thousand men.	85 Quelli che caddero sotto la spada e quelli che furono bruciati arrivarono a circa otto mila.
86 Jonathan then left and pitched camp outside Ascalon, where the citizens came out to meet him withgreat ceremony.	86 Elevato il campo di lì, Gionata andò ad Ascalona, e quelli della città gli andarono incontro rendendogli grandi onori.
87 Jonathan then returned to Jerusalem with his fol owers, laden with booty.	87 Poi Gionata, con i suoi, carichi di spoglie, tornò a Gerusalemme.
88 In the event, when King Alexander heard what had happened, he awarded Jonathan furtherhonours:	88 Quando il re Alessandro seppe queste cose, accordò ancora maggiori onori a Gionata:
