1 In the year 160, Alexander, son of Antiochus Epiphanes, raised an army and occupied Ptolemais. Hewas wel received, and there inaugurated his reign.	1 L'anno cento sessanta Alessandro figliuolo di Antioco soprannominato l'illustre andò ad occupar Tolemaide,e vi fù accolto, e ivi cominciò a regnare.
2 On hearing this, King Demetrius assembled a very large army and marched off to do battle with him.	2 La qual cosa avendo udito il re Demetrio raunó un grande esercito, e si avanzò per venir con lui a battaglia.
3 Demetrius furthermore sent Jonathan a most conciliatory letter, promising to promote him in rank,	3 E Demetrio scrisse a Gionata con espressioni di affetto, e dandogli molte lodi.
4 for, as he said, 'We had better move first to come to terms with these people before he makescommon cause with Alexander against us;	4 Perocchè egli diceva: Facciasi tosto pace con lui prima, che egli la faccia con Alessandro in nostro danno:
5 he wil not have forgotten al the wrongs we inflicted on him and his brothers, and on his nation.'	5 Perocchè egli si ricorderà del male, che abbiam fallo a lui e al suo fratello e alla sua nazione.
6 He even authorised him to raise an army, to manufacture arms, and to describe himself as his al y,and ordered the hostages in the Citadel to be surrendered to him.	6 E gli dava autorità di metter insieme un esercito, e di fabbricare armi, e lo faceva suo confederato, e comandava, che gli fosser rimessi gli ostaggi, che erano nella cittadella.
7 Jonathan went straight to Jerusalem and read the letter in the hearing of the whole people and of themen in the Citadel.	7 E Gionata andò a Gerusalemme, e lesse la lettera alla presenza di tutto il popolo e di quelli che eran nella cittadella.

10 Jonathan then took up residence in Jerusalem and began the rebuilding and restoration of the city.	10 E Gionata fissò la sua abitazione in Gerusalemme, e cominciò a rifabbricare e ristorar la città:
11 He ordered those responsible for the work to build the wal s and the defences round Mount Zion ofsquared stone blocks to make them stronger, and this was done.	11 E disse a quelli, che soprintendevano ai lavori, che facessero una muraglia di pietra quadra attorno al monte di Sion per fortificarlo; e così fecero.

17 He therefore wrote him a letter, addressing him in these terms:	17 E scrisse, e mandò a lui una lettera di questo tenore:

19 'You have been brought to our notice as a strong man of action and as someone who deserves to beour friend.	19 Abbiamo saputo, che tu se' un uomo di valore, e degno della nostra amicizia.
20 Accordingly, we have today appointed you high priest of your nation, with the title of "Friend of theKing" ' -- he also sent him a purple robe and a golden crown-'and you are to study our interests and maintainfriendly relations with us.'	20 Ora noi li facciamo oggi sommo Sacerdote di tua nazione, e vogliamo, che tu abbi il titolo di Amico del re, e sii unito di interessi con noi, e serbi a noi amicizia. 21 Jonathan put on the sacred vestments in the seventh month of the year 160, on the feast of Shelters;he then set about raising troops and manufacturing arms in quantity.	21 E Gionata si vestì della stola santa l'anno cento sessanta il settimo mese nel di solenne de' Tabernacoli, e raunò l'esercito, e fece fabbricare gran quantità di armi.
22 Demetrius was displeased when he heard what had happened.	22 Delle quali cose informato Demetrio se ne afflisse moltissimo, e disse:
23 'What have we been doing,' he said, 'for Alexander to forestal us in winning the friendship of theJews and so improving his own position?	23 Che abbiam noi fatto? Alessandro ci ha prevenuti in aequistarsi l'amicizia dei Giudei per fortificarsi.
24 I too shall address an appeal to them, offering them advancement and riches as an inducement tosupport me.'	24 Scriverò io pure ad essi, pregandoli, e offerendo lora dignità e doni, affinché sieno in mio aiuto.
25 And he wrote to them as fol ows: 'King Demetrius to the Jewish nation, greetings.	25 E scrisse loro in questi termini: Il re Demetrio alla nazione de' Giudei, salute:
26 'We have heard how you have kept your agreement with us and have maintained friendly relationswith us and have not gone over to our enemies, and it has given us great satisfaction.	26 Abbiam sentito come voi avete mantenuta l'alleanza, e siete stati costanti nella nostra amicizia, e non vi siete collegati coi nostri nemici, e ne abbiamo avuto piacere.
27 If you now continue to keep faith with us, we shal make you a handsome return for what you do onour behalf.	27 Perseverate adunque in serbare la fede a noi, e vi renderemo mercede di quel che avete fatto in pro nostro.
28 We shal accord you many exemptions and grant you privileges.	28 E vi condoneremo molte gravezze, e vi concederemo delle grazie.
29 'Henceforth I release you and exempt al the Jews from the tribute, the salt dues and the crownlevies,	29 E fin d'adesso io assolvo voi e tutti Giudei da' tributi, e vi rimetto il prezzo del sale, le corone e la terza parte del seme:
30 and whereas I am entitled to one-third of the grain and one-half of the fruit of the trees, I release fromthis levy, from today and for the future, Judaea and the three districts annexed to it from Samaria-Galilee, fromthis day henceforth in perpetuity.	30 E la metà de' frutti delle piante, che mi appartiene, la rilascio a voi da questo di in poi, onde non si esiga più dalla terra di Giuda, né dalle tre città unite ad essa nella Samaria e nella Galilea da questi oggi per tutto il tempo avvenire:
31 Jerusalem wil be sacred and exempt, with its territory, from tithes and dues.	31 E Gerusalemme sia santa e libera col suo territorio, e sue sieno le decime e i tributi.
32 I relinquish control of the Citadel in Jerusalem and make it over to the high priest, so that he mayman it with a garrison of his own choosing.	32 Rimetto eziandio nelle vostre mani la cittadella, che è in Gerusalemme, e la consegno al sommo Sacerdote, affinché deputi chi a lui piacerà a custodirla.
33 Every Jewish person taken from Judaea into captivity in any part of my kingdom I set free withoutransom, and decree that al wil be exempt from taxes, even on their livestock.	33 E a tutti i Giudei menati schiavi dalla terra di Giuda in qualunque parte del mio regno si trovino, rendo gratuitamente la libertà, esentandogli tutti da' tributi anche dei loro bestiami.
34 Al festivals, Sabbaths, New Moons and days of special observance, and the three days before andthree days after a festival, wil be days of exemption and quittance for al the Jews in my kingdom,	34 E tutti i giorni solenni e i sabati e i noviluni e le feste comandate e i tre giorni prima di un dì solenne e i tre dì seguenti sieno giorni di immunità e di libertà per tutti i Giudei, che sono nel mio regno.
35 and no one wil have the right to exact payment from, or to molest, any of them for any matterwhatsoever.	35 E nissuno potrà agire contro di essi, o chiamargli in giudizio per qualsisia ragione;
36 'Jews will be enrol ed in the king's forces to the number of thirty thousand men and receivemaintenance on the same scale as the rest of the king's forces.	36 E sieno arrolati nell'esercito del re fino a trenta mila Giudei, e saranno trattati, come lo sono le milizie del re, e da essi se ne sceglierà un numero, che staranno nelle fortezze del gran re:
37 Some of them wil be stationed in the king's major fortresses, and from among others appointmentswil be made to positions of trust in the kingdom. Their officers and commanders will be appointed from their ownnumber and wil live under their own laws, as the king has prescribed for Judaea.	37 E tra questi si prenderanno delle persone, alle quali affidare i negozii del regno, che esigono gran fedeltà. E i loro capi sieno della loro nazione, e osservino le loro leggi, come il re ha ordinato pel paese di Giuda.
38 'As regards the three districts annexed to Judaea from the province of Samaria, these wil beintegrated into Judaea and considered as coming under one governor, obeying the high priest's authority and noother.	38 E le tre città della provincia di Samaria incorporate nella Giudea, sieno riputate della Giudea, onde abbiano un solo capo, e da altri non dependano fuori che dal sommo Sacerdote.
39 Ptolemais and the land thereto pertaining I present to the sanctuary in Jerusalem, to meet thenecessary expenses of public worship.	39 Tolemaide col suo territorio io l'ho donata al santuario, che è in Gerusalemme, per lo mantenimento del santuario.
40 And I make a personal grant of fifteen thousand silver shekels annual y chargeable to the royalrevenue from appropriate places.	40 E fo dono di quindici mila sicli d'argento per ciaschedun anno sopra i diritti reali, che a me spettano:
41 And the entire surplus, which has not been paid in by the officials as in previous years, wilhenceforth be paid over by them for work on the Temple.	41 E tutto quello, che è restato indietro, e non è stato pagato da' (miei) amministratori negli anni passati, si dia da qui in poi per le riparazioni della casa (del Signore).
42 In addition, the sum of five thousand silver shekels, levied annual y on the profits of the sanctuary, asshown in the annual accounts, is also relinquished as the perquisite of the priests who perform the liturgy.	42 E oltre a ciò i cinque mila sicli d'argento, che quelli riscotevano ogni anno per conto del santuario, anche questi spettino ai sacerdoti, che esercitano le funzioni del ministero.
43 Anyone who takes refuge in the Temple in Jerusalem or any of its precincts, when in debt to theroyal exchequer or otherwise, wil be discharged in ful possession of al the goods he owns in my kingdom.	43 E tutti quelli che si rifugiano nel tempio, che è in Gerusalemme e nelle sue adiacenze, e son debitori del re per qualsivoglia titolo, sieno sicuri, e godano liberamente di tutti i beni, che hanno nel mio regno.
44 As regards the building and restoration of the sanctuary, the expense of the work wil be met fromthe royal exchequer.	44 E per le fabbriche, o risarcimenti del santuario le spese si faranno a conto del re:
45 The reconstruction of the walls of Jerusalem and the fortification of the perimeter will also be acharge on the royal exchequer, as also the reconstruction of other city wal s in Judaea.'	45 E per ristorare, e fortificare all'intorno le mura di Gerusalemme, e per le mura da alzarsi nella Giudea le spese anderanno a conto del re.
46 When Jonathan and the people heard these proposals, they put no faith in them and refused toaccept them, remembering what great wrongs Demetrius had done to Israel and how cruel y he had oppressedthem.	46 Or quando Gionata, e il popolo ebbero udite queste cose, non se ne fidarono, e non le accettarono; perocchè si ricordavano dei mali grandi, che egli avea fatti ad Israele, e came gli avea straziati malamente.
47 They decided in favour of Alexander, since he seemed to offer the better inducements of the two,and they became his constant al ies.	47 E si determinaronn di favorire Alessandro, perché egli era stato il primo a cercar da loro la pace, e gli dettero aiuto costantemente.
48 King Alexander now mustered large forces and advanced against Demetrius.	48 Or il re Alessandro messe insieme un grand'esercito, e mosse il campo contro Demetrio.
49 The two kings met in battle. Alexander's army was routed, and Demetrius pursued him and defeatedhis troops.	49 E i due re vennero a battaglia, e l'esercito di Demetrio fu messo in fuga; e Alessandro gli insegui, e diede loro addosso.
50 He continued the battle with vigour until sunset. Demetrius himself, however, was kil ed the sameday.	50 E rincrudì la zuffa grandemente fino al tramontare del sole, e Demetrio vi fu morto.
51 Alexander sent ambassadors to Ptolemy king of Egypt, with this message:	51 E il re Alessandro mandò ambasciatori a Tolomeo re di Egitto, perché gli dicessero a suo nome:
52 'Since I have returned to my kingdom, have ascended the throne of my ancestors, have gainedcontrol by crushing Demetrius, and so recovered our country-	52 Io son rientrato nel mio regno, e seguo sul treno dei padri miei, ed ho ricuperati gli stati miei, ed ho vinto Demetrio, e ho ridotto a mia obbedienza i miei dominii,
53 for I fought him and we crushed both him and his army, and I now occupy his royal throne-	53 E son venuto a battaglia con lui, ed egli è restato sconfitto da noi con tutto il suo esercito, e noi siamo assisi sul trono del regno occupato da lui.
54 let us now make a treaty of friendship. Give me your daughter in marriage: as your son-in-law, I shalgive you, and her, presents which are worthy of you.'	54 Ora pertanto facciamo amicizia tra noi, e dammi per moglie la tua figliuola, e io sarò tuo genero, e farò a te e a lei doni degni di te.
55 King Ptolemy replied as follows: 'Happy the day when you returned to the land of your ancestors andascended their royal throne!	55 E il re Tolomeo rispose, e disse: Felice quel giorno, in cui tu se' tornato nel paese de' padri tuoi, e ti se'assiso sul trono del loro regno.
56 I shal at once do for you what your letter proposes; but meet me at Ptolemais, so that we can seeone another, and I shall become your father-in-law, as you have asked.'	56 Or io farò teca quello che tu hai scritto: ma vienimi incontro fino a Tolemaida, affinche' ci vediamo insieme, e io ti dia la sposa, come tu mi hai richiesto.
57 Ptolemy left Egypt with his daughter Cleopatra and reached Ptolemais in the year 162.	57 E Tolomeo si parti dall'Egitto con Cleopatra sua figliuola l'anno cento sessantadue, e andò a Tolemaida.
58 King Alexander went to meet him, and Ptolemy gave him the hand of his daughter Cleopatra andcelebrated her wedding in Ptolemais with great magnificence, as kings do.	58 E il re Alessandro gli andò incontro, e quegli diede a lui Cleopatra sua figliuola, e furon fatte le nozze in Tolemaida, alla reale con gran magnificenza.
59 King Alexander then wrote to Jonathan to come and meet him.	59 E il re Alessandro scrisse a Gionata, che andasse a trovarlo.
60 Jonathan made his way in state to Ptolemais and met the two kings; he gave them and their friendssilver and gold, and many gifts, and made a favourable impression on them.	60 Ed egli andò con pompa a Tolemaida, e visitò i due re, e diede loro quantità di oro e di argento e doni, ed essi lo accolsero con gran favore.
61 A number of scoundrels, the pest of Israel, combined to denounce him, but the king paid no attentionto them.	61 Ma alcuni uomini pestilenziali, uomini iniqui d'Israele si unirono per portar querele contro di lui; ma il re non gli ascoltò.
62 In fact, the king commanded that Jonathan should be divested of his own garments and clothed inthe purple, which was done.	62 E ordinò che Gionata si spogliasse delle sue vesti, e fosse rivestito di porpora, e cosi fu fatto; e il re lo fece sedere accanto a sé.
63 The king then seated him by his side and said to his officers, 'Escort him into the centre of the cityand proclaim that no one is to bring charges against him on any count; no one is to molest him for any reason.'	63 E disse ai suoi grandi: Andate con lui nel mezzo della città, e fate bandire, che nissuno porti querela contro di lui per nissun titolo, né lo inquieti per qualunque cosa si sia.
64 And so, when his accusers saw the honour done him by this proclamation, and Jonathan himselfinvested in the purple, they all fled.	64 Or quando gli accusatori ebber veduto com'egli era onorato, e quello che si era bandito, e com' egli era vestito di porpora, se ne fuggiron tutti:
65 The king did him the honour of enrol ing him among the First Friends, and appointed himcommander-in-chief and governor-general.	65 E il re gli fece grandi onori, e lo messe tra' suoi amici primarj, e lo fece capitano di eserciti, e lo mise a parte del principato.
66 Jonathan then returned to Jerusalem in peace and gladness.	66 E Gionata se ne tornò in pace e allegramente a Gerusalemme.
67 In the year 165, Demetrius son of Demetrius came from Crete to the land of his ancestors.	67 L'anno cento sessantacinque Demetrio figliuolo di Demetrio venne di Candia nel paese de' padri suoi.
68 When King Alexander heard of it he was plunged into gloom, and retired to Antioch.	68 E udito ciò il re Alessandro n'ebbe gran pena, e tornò ad Antiochia.
69 Demetrius confirmed Apol onius as governor of Coele-Syria; the latter assembled a large force,encamped at Jamnia and sent the fol owing message to Jonathan the high priest:	69 E il re Demetrio fece suo capitano Apollonio, il quale governava la Celesiria: ed egli, messo insieme un grand'esercito, si accostò a Jamnia, e mandò a dire a Gionata sommo Sacerdote:
70 'You are entirely alone in rising against us, and now I find myself ridiculed and reproached on youraccount. Why do you use your authority to our disadvantage in the mountains?	70 Tu se' il solo, che ci fai resistenza, e io son messo in derisione e schernito, perché tu ti fai forte contro di noi sulle montagne.
71 If you are so confident in your forces, come down now to meet us on the plain and let us take eachother's measure there; on my side I have the strength of the towns.	71 Ora pertanto se tu hai fidanza nelle tue schiere scendi a noi alla pianura, e misuriamoci insieme; perocchè il valor militare è con me.
72 Ask and learn who I am and who the others supporting us are. You will hear that you cannot standup to us, since your ancestors were twice routed on their own ground,	72 Domanda, e ti sarà detto chi io mi sia, e chi sien quelli che sono in mio aiuta, i quali dicono, che voi non potete reggervi in piedi in faccia a noi; perocche due volte furon messi in rotta i padri tuoi nel loro paese.
73 nor wil you now be able to withstand the cavalry or so great an army on the plain, where there isneither rock, nor stone, nor refuge of any kind.'	73 E adesso come potrei far testa alla cavalleria e ad un esercito cosi grande in una pianura, dove non e pietra, né masso, nè luogo dove fuggire?
74 On hearing Apollonius' words, Jonathan's spirit was roused; he picked ten thousand men and leftJerusalem, and his brother Simon joined him with reinforcements.	74 Gionata udite le parole di Apollonio ne restò punto; e scelti diecimila uomini parti da Gerusalemme, e andogli incontro Simone suo fratello a soccorrerlo:
75 He drew up his forces outside Joppa, the citizens having shut him out, since Apol onius had agarrison in Joppa. When they began the attack,	75 E posero il campo presso Joppe, e quelli della città gli chiuser le porte (perocche Joppe avea il presidio di Apollonio), ed egli l'assedio.
76 the citizens took fright and opened the gates, and Jonathan occupied Joppa.	76 Ma intimoriti quelli che si trovavano nella città apersero a lui le porte, e Gionata occupò Joppe.
77 Hearing this, Apol onius marshal ed three thousand cavalry and a large army and made his way toAzotus as though intending to march through, while in fact pressing on into the plain, since he had a greatnumber of cavalry on which he was relying.	77 E inteso ciò Apollonio si avvicinò con tre mila cavalli e con gran moltitudine di fonti.
78 Jonathan pursued him as far as Azotus, where the armies joined battle.	78 E si mosse come per andare verso Azoto, e subito si gettò alla pianura, perché avea un buon corpo di cavalleria, e in essa avea fidanza. E Gionata gli tenne dietro verso Azoto, e attaccaron la mischia.
79 Now, Apol onius had left a thousand horsemen in concealment behind them.	79 Or Apollonio avea lasciati nascosti nel campo mille cavalli dietro ai nemici.
80 Jonathan knew of this enemy position behind him; the horsemen surrounded his army, firing theirarrows into his men from morning til evening.	80 E Gionata fu avvertito, che gli erano state tese insidie alle spalle; e i nemici circondarono la sua gente, e gettavan dardi sopra di essa dalla mattina sino alla sera.
81 But the troops stood firm, as Jonathan had ordered. Once the cavalry was exhausted,	81 E quegli stavan termi secondo il comando di Gionata; e i cavalli di coloro si stancarono.
82 Simon sent his own troops into attack against the phalanx, which he cut to pieces and routed.	82 Allora Simone spinse avanti il suo esercito, e diede addosso all'infanteria (perocche la cavalleria era spossata), e la ruppe e la mise in fuga.
83 The cavalry scattered over the plain and fled to Azotus, where they took sanctuary in Beth-Dagon,the temple of their idol.	83 E quelli che eran dispersi per la pianura, fuggirono ad Azoto, ed entrarono nella casa di Dagon loro idolo per salvarvisi.
84 Jonathan, however, set fire to Azotus and the surrounding towns, plundered them, and burned downthe temple of Dagon, with al the fugitives who had crowded into it.	84 Ma Gionata messe il fuoco ad Azoto, e nelle città circonvicine dopo averle saccheggiate, e bruciò il tempio di Dagon e tutti quelli che vi si eran rifugiati.
85 The enemy losses, counting those who fell by the sword and those burnt to death, total ed abouteight thousand men.	85 E tra morti di spada e bruciati furono circa otto mila.
86 Jonathan then left and pitched camp outside Ascalon, where the citizens came out to meet him withgreat ceremony.	86 E Gionata parti di colà, e si avvicinò ad Ascalon, e quelli della città gli andarono incontro facendogli grandi onori.
87 Jonathan then returned to Jerusalem with his fol owers, laden with booty.	87 E tornò Gionata a Gerusalemme con la sua gente ricco di spoglie.
88 In the event, when King Alexander heard what had happened, he awarded Jonathan furtherhonours:	88 Or tali cose avendo udite il re Alessandro, volle onorare viepiù Gionata.
89 he sent him the golden brooch, of the kind customarily presented to the King's Cousins, and gavehim proprietary rights over Ekron and the land adjoining it.	89 E mandogli la fibbia d'oro solita a darsi ai parenti de' re: e gli diede il dominio di Accaron e del suo territorio.
