1 In the year 160, Alexander, son of Antiochus Epiphanes, raised an army and occupied Ptolemais. Hewas wel received, and there inaugurated his reign.	1 L'anno 160 Alessandro Epifane, figlio di Antioco, s'imbarcò e occupò Tolemaide, dove fu ben accolto e incominciò a regnare.
2 On hearing this, King Demetrius assembled a very large army and marched off to do battle with him.	2 Avendolo saputo, il re Demetrio radunò forze in grande quantità e uscì per combattere contro di lui.

28 We shal accord you many exemptions and grant you privileges.	28 vi concederemo molte immunità e vi invieremo doni.
29 'Henceforth I release you and exempt al the Jews from the tribute, the salt dues and the crownlevies,	29 Già da ora sciolgo ed esento tutti i Giudei dai tributi, dalla tassa del sale e dalle corone.
30 and whereas I am entitled to one-third of the grain and one-half of the fruit of the trees, I release fromthis levy, from today and for the future, Judaea and the three districts annexed to it from Samaria-Galilee, fromthis day henceforth in perpetuity.	30 Rinunzio anche da oggi alla terza parte del seminato e alla metà dei frutti degli alberi che mi toccherebbe, lasciando di prendere tutto ciò dalla terra di Giudea e dai tre distretti che le sono stati annessi, dalla Samaria e dalla Galilea, a partire dal giorno di oggi e per sempre.

32 I relinquish control of the Citadel in Jerusalem and make it over to the high priest, so that he mayman it with a garrison of his own choosing.	32 Rinunzio ad ogni potestà sull'Acra che è in Gerusalemme e la cedo al sommo sacerdote affinché vi ponga gli uomini che vorrà scegliere per custodirla.
33 Every Jewish person taken from Judaea into captivity in any part of my kingdom I set free withoutransom, and decree that al wil be exempt from taxes, even on their livestock.	33 Infine, rendo la libertà gratuitamente a qualunque persona giudea, condotta in schiavitù dalla terra di Giudea in qualunque parte del mio regno, e tutti siano esenti dai tributi, anche da quello sul loro bestiame.
34 Al festivals, Sabbaths, New Moons and days of special observance, and the three days before andthree days after a festival, wil be days of exemption and quittance for al the Jews in my kingdom,	34 Tutte le feste, i sabati, le neomenie, i giorni stabiliti, i tre giorni prima della festa e i tre dopo la festa, siano tutti giorni di esenzione e di remissione per tutti i Giudei che sono nel mio regno;
35 and no one wil have the right to exact payment from, or to molest, any of them for any matterwhatsoever.	35 e nessuno abbia autorità di intentare causa o di molestare qualcuno di loro per qualunque motivo.
36 'Jews will be enrol ed in the king's forces to the number of thirty thousand men and receivemaintenance on the same scale as the rest of the king's forces.	36 Saranno reclutati tra i Giudei per gli eserciti del re circa trentamila uomini, ai quali sarà pagato il soldo che è dovuto a tutte le truppe del re.
37 Some of them wil be stationed in the king's major fortresses, and from among others appointmentswil be made to positions of trust in the kingdom. Their officers and commanders will be appointed from their ownnumber and wil live under their own laws, as the king has prescribed for Judaea.	37 Alcuni di essi saranno posti nelle maggiori fortezze del re ed altri saranno preposti agli affari di fiducia del regno. 38 'As regards the three districts annexed to Judaea from the province of Samaria, these wil beintegrated into Judaea and considered as coming under one governor, obeying the high priest's authority and noother.	38 I tre distretti, che dalla regione di Samaria sono stati annessi alla Giudea, siano annessi alla Giudea in modo da essere considerati dipendenti da uno solo e che non ubbidiscano ad altra autorità che a quella del sommo sacerdote.
39 Ptolemais and the land thereto pertaining I present to the sanctuary in Jerusalem, to meet thenecessary expenses of public worship.	39 Faccio dono di Tolemaide e delle sue dipendenze al tempio di Gerusalemme per le spese necessarie del santuario.
40 And I make a personal grant of fifteen thousand silver shekels annual y chargeable to the royalrevenue from appropriate places.	40 Da parte mia dono ogni anno quindicimila sicli d'argento, da prendersi dalle casse del re sui proventi dei luoghi più confacenti.
41 And the entire surplus, which has not been paid in by the officials as in previous years, wilhenceforth be paid over by them for work on the Temple.	41 Tutto il sovrappiù che i preposti ai negozi non hanno consegnato negli ultimi anni, da questo momento lo daranno per le opere del tempio.
42 In addition, the sum of five thousand silver shekels, levied annual y on the profits of the sanctuary, asshown in the annual accounts, is also relinquished as the perquisite of the priests who perform the liturgy.	42 Oltre a ciò, i cinquemila sicli d'argento che venivano riscossi sui proventi del santuario dal conto di ogni anno, siano rimessi anch'essi perché appartengono ai sacerdoti che prestano servizio.
43 Anyone who takes refuge in the Temple in Jerusalem or any of its precincts, when in debt to theroyal exchequer or otherwise, wil be discharged in ful possession of al the goods he owns in my kingdom.	43 Tutti quelli che si rifugiano nel tempio di Gerusalemme e dentro tutte le sue dipendenze, perché gravati da debiti verso il re o da qualunque altra obbligazione, siano lasciati liberi con tutti i beni che possiedono nel mio regno.
44 As regards the building and restoration of the sanctuary, the expense of the work wil be met fromthe royal exchequer.	44 Anche per i lavori di ricostruzione e di restauro del santuario si provvederà alla spesa a conto del re.
45 The reconstruction of the walls of Jerusalem and the fortification of the perimeter will also be acharge on the royal exchequer, as also the reconstruction of other city wal s in Judaea.'	45 Similmente per ricostruire le mura di Gerusalemme e per le fortificazioni all'intorno si provvederà alla spesa a conto del re, come pure per ricostruire le altre mura in Giudea".
46 When Jonathan and the people heard these proposals, they put no faith in them and refused toaccept them, remembering what great wrongs Demetrius had done to Israel and how cruel y he had oppressedthem.	46 Quando Gionata e il popolo ebbero udito queste parole, non vi prestarono fede né le accettarono, poiché si ricordavano del grande male che egli aveva fatto in Israele e come li aveva oppressi fortemente.
47 They decided in favour of Alexander, since he seemed to offer the better inducements of the two,and they became his constant al ies.	47 Si decisero, invece, in favore di Alessandro, perché egli si era loro rivolto per primo con parole pacifiche e divennero suoi alleati per tutti i giorni.
48 King Alexander now mustered large forces and advanced against Demetrius.	48 Allora il re Alessandro radunò grandi forze e marciò contro Demetrio.
49 The two kings met in battle. Alexander's army was routed, and Demetrius pursued him and defeatedhis troops.	49 I due re attaccarono battaglia, ma l'armata di Demetrio si diede alla fuga e Alessandro l'inseguì, prevalendo su di essi.
50 He continued the battle with vigour until sunset. Demetrius himself, however, was kil ed the sameday.	50 La battaglia si fece aspra fino al tramonto del sole e anche Demetrio cadde ucciso in quel giorno.
51 Alexander sent ambassadors to Ptolemy king of Egypt, with this message:	51 Alessandro mandò ambasciatori a Tolomeo, re d'Egitto, per dirgli:
52 'Since I have returned to my kingdom, have ascended the throne of my ancestors, have gainedcontrol by crushing Demetrius, and so recovered our country-	52 "Ecco, sono tornato nel mio regno e mi sono assiso sul trono dei miei padri. Ho preso il potere, ho sconfitto Demetrio e sono diventato padrone del nostro paese.
53 for I fought him and we crushed both him and his army, and I now occupy his royal throne-	53 Ho attaccato battaglia contro di lui; la sua armata e lui stesso sono stati battuti da noi e ci siamo assisi sul suo trono regale.
54 let us now make a treaty of friendship. Give me your daughter in marriage: as your son-in-law, I shalgive you, and her, presents which are worthy of you.'	54 Stringiamo amicizia tra noi; tu dammi tua figlia in moglie, io diventerò tuo genero e darò a te e a lei dei regali degni di te".
55 King Ptolemy replied as follows: 'Happy the day when you returned to the land of your ancestors andascended their royal throne!	55 Il re Tolomeo rispose dicendo: "Fausto il giorno in cui sei tornato nella terra dei tuoi padri e ti sei assiso sul loro trono regale!
56 I shal at once do for you what your letter proposes; but meet me at Ptolemais, so that we can seeone another, and I shall become your father-in-law, as you have asked.'	56 Farò per te quanto mi hai scritto, ma vienimi incontro a Tolemaide affinché possiamo vederci l'un l'altro, e ti farò mio genero, come hai detto".
57 Ptolemy left Egypt with his daughter Cleopatra and reached Ptolemais in the year 162.	57 Tolomeo uscì dall'Egitto con Cleopatra sua figlia e venne a Tolemaide nell'anno 162.
58 King Alexander went to meet him, and Ptolemy gave him the hand of his daughter Cleopatra andcelebrated her wedding in Ptolemais with great magnificence, as kings do.	58 Il re Alessandro gli andò incontro ed egli gli diede sua figlia Cleopatra, celebrando le sue nozze come sogliono fare i re, con grande sfarzo.
59 King Alexander then wrote to Jonathan to come and meet him.	59 Il re Alessandro scrisse pure a Gionata affinché gli andasse incontro
60 Jonathan made his way in state to Ptolemais and met the two kings; he gave them and their friendssilver and gold, and many gifts, and made a favourable impression on them.	60 e questi si recò a Tolemaide con grande pompa. Incontrò i due re e diede loro, al pari dei loro amici, argento e oro e altri doni, trovando grazia ai loro occhi.
61 A number of scoundrels, the pest of Israel, combined to denounce him, but the king paid no attentionto them.	61 Contro di lui, tuttavia, convennero alcuni uomini pestiferi d'Israele, uomini iniqui, che volevano intervenire contro di lui; ma il re non prestò loro attenzione.
62 In fact, the king commanded that Jonathan should be divested of his own garments and clothed inthe purple, which was done.	62 Il re, anzi, comandò che togliessero di dosso a Gionata i suoi vestiti e lo rivestissero di porpora; e così fecero.
63 The king then seated him by his side and said to his officers, 'Escort him into the centre of the cityand proclaim that no one is to bring charges against him on any count; no one is to molest him for any reason.'	63 Poi il re lo fece sedere accanto a sé e disse ai suoi ufficiali: "Uscite con lui al centro della città e fate proclamare che nessuno cerchi di intervenire contro di lui per qualunque motivo e nessuno gli rechi molestia per qualsiasi ragione".
64 And so, when his accusers saw the honour done him by this proclamation, and Jonathan himselfinvested in the purple, they all fled.	64 Or quando gli accusatori videro che egli era onorato conforme a quanto il re aveva fatto proclamare, e come era stato rivestito di porpora, se ne fuggirono tutti.
65 The king did him the honour of enrol ing him among the First Friends, and appointed himcommander-in-chief and governor-general.	65 Il re lo colmò d'onori, lo iscrisse tra i suoi primi amici e lo costituì stratega e governatore della provincia.
66 Jonathan then returned to Jerusalem in peace and gladness.	66 Dopo di che Gionata ritornò a Gerusalemme con serenità e gioia.
67 In the year 165, Demetrius son of Demetrius came from Crete to the land of his ancestors.	67 Nell'anno 165 Demetrio, figlio di Demetrio, da Creta venne nella terra dei suoi padri.

70 'You are entirely alone in rising against us, and now I find myself ridiculed and reproached on youraccount. Why do you use your authority to our disadvantage in the mountains?	70 "Tu sei il solo a levarti contro di noi e io son diventato oggetto di derisione e di scherno a causa tua. Perché ti fai forte contro di noi sui monti?
71 If you are so confident in your forces, come down now to meet us on the plain and let us take eachother's measure there; on my side I have the strength of the towns.	71 Se hai fiducia nelle tue truppe, scendi verso di noi nella pianura e misuriamoci l'un l'altro, poiché con me sta la forza delle città.
72 Ask and learn who I am and who the others supporting us are. You will hear that you cannot standup to us, since your ancestors were twice routed on their own ground,	72 Interroga e apprenderai chi sono io e chi sono quelli che ci aiutano. Ti diranno: "Non vi è per voi stabilità di piede davanti a noi". Già due volte, infatti, i padri tuoi sono stati messi in fuga nella loro terra.
73 nor wil you now be able to withstand the cavalry or so great an army on the plain, where there isneither rock, nor stone, nor refuge of any kind.'	73 Non potrai perciò resistere davanti alla cavalleria e a un tale esercito nella pianura, dove non v'è né pietra né rupe né luogo per fuggire".
74 On hearing Apollonius' words, Jonathan's spirit was roused; he picked ten thousand men and leftJerusalem, and his brother Simon joined him with reinforcements.	74 Quando Gionata udì le parole di Apollonio il suo animo ne restò agitato. Scelti perciò diecimila uomini, uscì da Gerusalemme e Simone suo fratello gli andò incontro per aiutarlo.
75 He drew up his forces outside Joppa, the citizens having shut him out, since Apol onius had agarrison in Joppa. When they began the attack,	75 Si accampò davanti a Giaffa, ma quelli della città gli chiusero le porte, giacché in Giaffa vi era una guarnigione di Apollonio. Egli allora l'attaccò
76 the citizens took fright and opened the gates, and Jonathan occupied Joppa.	76 e, spaventati, quelli della città gli aprirono. Così Gionata si impadronì di Giaffa.
77 Hearing this, Apol onius marshal ed three thousand cavalry and a large army and made his way toAzotus as though intending to march through, while in fact pressing on into the plain, since he had a greatnumber of cavalry on which he was relying.	77 Quando lo seppe, Apollonio equipaggiò tremila cavalieri e un grande esercito e si diresse verso Asdòd, come se volesse andarvi, ma subito piegò verso la pianura, poiché aveva moltissima cavalleria e aveva fiducia in essa.

79 Now, Apol onius had left a thousand horsemen in concealment behind them.	79 Apollonio aveva lasciato mille cavalieri nascosti alle loro spalle,
