Exodus 19

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 Three months to the day after leaving Egypt, the Israelites reached the desert of Sinai.	1 Al tercer mes después de la salida de Egipto, ese mismo día, llegaron los hijos de Israel al desierto de Sinaí.
2 Setting out from Rephidim, they reached the desert of Sinai and pitched camp in the desert; there,facing the mountain, Israel pitched camp.	2 Partieron de Refidim, y al llegar al desierto de Sinaí acamparon en el desierto. Allí acampó Israel frente al monte.
3 Moses then went up to God, and Yahweh cal ed to him from the mountain, saying, 'Say this to theHouse of Jacob! Tel the Israelites,	3 Moisés subió hacia Dios. Yahveh le llamó desde el monte, y le dijo: «Así dirás a la casa de Jacob y esto anunciarás a los hijos de Israel:
4 "You have seen for yourselves what I did to the Egyptians and how I carried you away on eagle'swings and brought you to me.	4 “Ya habéis visto lo que he hecho con los egipcios, y cómo a vosotros os he llevado sobre alas de águila y os he traído a mí.
5 So now, if you are real y prepared to obey me and keep my covenant, you, out of all peoples, shall bemy personal possession, for the whole world is mine.	5 Ahora, pues, si de veras escucháis mi voz y guardáis mi alianza, vosotros seréis mi propiedad personal entre todos los pueblos, porque mía es toda la tierra;
6 For me you shal be a kingdom of priests, a holy nation." Those are the words you are to say to theIsraelites.'	6 seréis para mí un reino de sacerdotes y una nación santa.” Estas son las palabras que has de decir a los hijos de Israel.»
7 So Moses went and summoned the people's elders and acquainted them with everything that Yahwehhad bidden him,	7 Fue, pues, Moisés y convocó a los ancianos del pueblo y les expuso todas estas palabras que Yahveh le había mandado.
8 and the people al replied with one accord, 'Whatever Yahweh has said, we will do.' Moses thenreported to Yahweh what the people had said.	8 Todo el pueblo a una respondió diciendo: «Haremos todo cuanto ha dicho Yahveh.» Y Moisés llevó a Yahveh la respuesta del pueblo.
9 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Look, I shal come to you in a dense cloud so that the people wil hearwhen I speak to you and believe you ever after.' Moses then told Yahweh what the people had said.	9 Dijo Yahveh a Moisés: «Mira: Voy a presentarme a ti en una densa nube para que el pueblo me oiga hablar contigo, y así te dé crédito para siempre.» Y Moisés refirió a Yahveh las palabras del pueblo.
10 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Go to the people and tel them to sanctify themselves today andtomorrow. They must wash their clothes	10 Yahveh dijo a Moisés: «Ve donde el pueblo y haz que se santifiquen hoy y mañana; que laven sus vestidos
11 and be ready for the day after tomorrow; for the day after tomorrow, in the sight of al the people,Yahweh wil descend on Mount Sinai.	11 y estén preparados para el tercer día; porque al día tercero descenderá Yahveh a la vista de todo el pueblo sobre el monte Sinaí.
12 You wil mark out the limits of the mountain and say, "Take care not to go up the mountain or to touchthe edge of it. Anyone who touches the mountain wil be put to death.	12 Deslinda el contorno de la montaña, y di: Guardaos de subir al monte y aun de tocar su falda. Todo aquel que toque el monte morirá.
13 No one may lay a hand on him: he must be stoned or shot by arrow; whether man or beast, he shalnot live." When the ram's horn sounds a long blast, they must go up the mountain.'	13 Pero nadie pondrá la mano sobre el culpable, sino que será lapidado o asaeteado; sea hombre o bestia, no quedará con vida. Cuando resuene el cuerno, subirán ellos al monte.»
14 So Moses came down from the mountain to the people; he made the people sanctify themselves andthey washed their clothes.	14 Bajó, pues, Moisés del monte, adonde estaba el pueblo, y ellos lavaron sus vestidos.
15 He then said to the people, 'Be ready for the day after tomorrow; do not touch a woman.'	15 Y dijo al pueblo: «Estad preparados para el tercer día, y absteneos de mujer.»
16 Now at daybreak two days later, there were peals of thunder and flashes of lightning, dense cloud onthe mountain and a very loud trumpet blast; and, in the camp, al the people trembled.	16 Al tercer día, al rayar el alba, hubo truenos y relámpagos y una densa nube sobre el monte y un poderoso resonar de trompeta; y todo el pueblo que estaba en el campamento se echó a temblar.
17 Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet God; and they took their stand at the bottom ofthe mountain.	17 Entonces Moisés hizo salir al pueblo del campamento para ir al encuentro de Dios, y se detuvieron al pie del monte.
18 Mount Sinai was entirely wrapped in smoke, because Yahweh had descended on it in the form of fire.The smoke rose like smoke from a furnace and the whole mountain shook violently.	18 Todo el monte Sinaí humeaba, porque Yahveh había descendido sobre él en el fuego. Subía el humo como de un horno, y todo el monte retemblaba con violencia.
19 Louder and louder grew the trumpeting. Moses spoke, and God answered him in the thunder.	19 El sonar de la trompeta se hacía cada vez más fuerte; Moisés hablaba y Dios le respondía con el trueno.
20 Yahweh descended on Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain, and Yahweh cal ed Moses to the topof the mountain; and Moses went up.	20 Yahveh bajó al monte Sinaí, a la cumbre del monte; llamó Yahveh a Moisés a la cima de la montaña y Moisés subió.
21 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Go down and warn the people not to break through to look at Yahweh,or many of them wil perish.	21 Dijo Yahveh a Moisés: «Baja y conjura al pueblo que no traspase las lindes para ver a Yahveh, porque morirían muchos de ellos;
22 Even the priests, who do have access to Yahweh, must sanctify themselves, or Yahweh may burstout against them.'	22 aun los sacerdotes que se acercan a Yahveh deben santificarse para que Yahveh no irrumpa contra ellos.»
23 Moses said to Yahweh, 'The people cannot come up Mount Sinai, since you yourself warned us tomark out the limits of the mountain and declare it sacred.'	23 Moisés respondió a Yahveh: «El pueblo no podrá subir al monte Sinaí, porque tú nos lo has prohibido, diciendo: Señala un límite alrededor del monte y decláralo sagrado.»
24 Yahweh said, 'Away with you! Go down! Then come back bringing Aaron with you. But do not al owthe priests and people to break through to come up to Yahweh, or he may burst out against them.'	24 Yahveh le dijo: «Anda, baja, y luego subes tú y Aarón contigo; pero los sacerdotes y el pueblo no traspasarán las lindes para subir hacia Yahveh a fin de que no irrumpa contra ellos.”
25 So Moses went down to the people and spoke to them.	25 Bajó, pues, Moisés adonde estaba el pueblo y les dijo...
