1 When Mordecai learned what had happened, he tore his garments and put on sackcloth and ashes.Then he walked into the centre of the city, wailing loudly and bitterly,	1 Cuando Mardoqueo supo lo que pasaba, rasgó sus vestidos, se vistió de sayal y ceniza y salió por la ciudad lanzando grandes gemidos,
2 until he arrived in front of the Chancel ery, which no one clothed in sackcloth was al owed to enter.	2 hasta llegar ante la Puerta Real, pues nadie podía pasar la Puerta cubierto de sayal.
3 And in every province, no sooner had the royal command and edict arrived, than among the Jews therewas great mourning, fasting, weeping and wailing, and many lay on sackcloth and ashes.	3 En todas las provincias, dondequiera que se publicaban la palabra y el edicto real, había entre los judíos gran duelo, ayunos y lágrimas y lamentos, y a muchos el sayal y la ceniza les sirvió de lecho.
4 When Queen Esther's maids and officers came and told her, she was overcome with grief. She sentclothes for Mordecai to put on instead of his sackcloth, but he refused them.	4 Las siervas y ennucos de Ester vinieron a comunicárselo. La reina se llenó de angustia y mandó enviar a Mardoqueo vestidos para que se vistiese y se quitase el sayal, pero él no quiso.
5 Esther then summoned Hathach, an officer whom the king had appointed to wait on her, and orderedhim to go to Mordecai and enquire what the matter was and why he was acting in this way.	5 Llamó Ester a Hatak, uno de los eunucos que el rey había puesto a su servicio, y le envió a Mardoqueo para enterarse de lo que pasaba y a qué obedecía todo aquello.
6 Hathach went out to Mordecai in the city square in front of the Chancel ery,	6 Salió Hatak y fue donde Mardoqueo, que estaba en la plaza de la ciudad que hay frente a la Puerta Real.
7 and Mordecai told him what had happened to him personally, and also about the sum of money whichHaman had offered to pay into the royal treasury to procure the destruction of the Jews.	7 Mardoqueo le informó de todo cuanto había pasado y de la suma de dinero que Amán había prometido entregar al tesoro real por el exterminio de los judíos.
8 He also gave him a copy of the edict of extermination published in Susa for him to show Esther for herinformation, with the message that she was to go to the king and implore his favour and plead with him for therace to which she belonged. (a) 'Remember your humbler circumstances,' he said, 'when you were fed by myhand. Since Haman, the second person in the realm, has petitioned the king for our deaths, (b) invoke the Lord,speak to the king for us and save us from death!'	8 Le dio también una copia del texto del edicto de exterminio publicado en Susa, para que se lo enseñara a Ester y se informara; y ordenó a la reina que se presentase ante el rey, se ganara su favor y suplicara por su pueblo. (*Ester 4:8-a) «Acuérdate, le mandó a decir, de cuando eras pequeña y recibías el alimento de mi mano. Porque Amán, el segundo después del rey, ha sentenciado nuestra muerte. Ora al Señor, habla al rey en favor nuestro y libranos de la muerte».
9 Hathach came back and told Esther what Mordecai had said;	9 Regresó Hatak e informó a Ester de las palabras de Mardoqueo.
10 and she replied with the following message for Mordecai,	10 Ester mandó a Hatak que dijera a Mardoqueo:
11 'Royal officials and people living in the provinces alike al know that for anyone, man or woman, whoapproaches the king in the private apartments without having been summoned there, there is only one law: hemust die, unless the king, by pointing his golden sceptre towards him, grants him his life. And I have not beensummoned to the king for the last thirty days.'	11 «Todos los servidores del rey y todos los habitantes de las provincias del rey saben que todo hombre o mujer que se presente al rey, en el patio interior, sin haber sido llamado, es condenado a muerte por el edicto, salvo aquel sobre quien el rey extienda su cetro de oro; y hace ya treinta días que yo no he sido llamada a presencia del rey».
12 These words of Esther were reported to Mordecai,	12 Llevó a Mardoqueo la respuesta de Ester
13 who sent back the fol owing reply, 'Do not suppose that, because you are in the king's palace, you aregoing to be the one Jew to escape.	13 y Mardoqueo hizo que le contestara: «No te imagines que por estar en la casa del rey, te vas a librar tú sola entre todos los judíos,
14 No; if you persist in remaining silent at such a time, relief and deliverance wil come to the Jews fromanother quarter, but both you and your father's whole family wil perish. Who knows? Perhaps you have come tothe throne for just such a time as this.'	14 porque, si te empeñas en callar en esta ocasión, por otra parte vendrá el socorro de la liberación de los judíos, mientras que tú y la casa de tu padre pereceréis. ¡Quién sabe si precisamente para una ocasión semejante has llegado a ser reina!»
15 Whereupon Esther sent this reply to Mordecai,	15 Ester mandó que respondieran a Mardoqueo:
16 'Go and assemble all the Jews now in Susa and fast for me. Do not eat or drink day or night for threedays. For my part, I and my waiting-women shall keep the same fast, after which I shal go to the king in spite ofthe law; and if I perish, I perish.'	16 «Vete a reunir a todos los judíos que hay en Susa y ayunad por mí. No comáis ni bebáis durante tres días y tres noches. También yo y mis siervas ayunaremos. Y así, a pesar de la ley, me presentaré ante el rey; y si tengo que morir, moriré».
17 Mordecai went away and carried out Esther's instructions. (a) Then cal ing to mind al the wonderfulworks of the Lord, he offered this prayer: (b) Lord, Lord, Almighty King, everything is subject to your power, andthere is no one who can withstand you in your determination to save Israel. (c) You have made heaven andearth, and al the marvels that are under heaven. You are the Master of the universe and no one can resist you,Lord. (d) You know al things, you, Lord, know that neither pride, self-esteem nor vainglory prompted me to dowhat I have done: to refuse to prostrate myself before proud Haman. Gladly would I have kissed the soles of hisfeet, had this assured the safety of Israel. (e) But what I have done, I have done, rather than place the glory of aman above the glory of God; and I shall not prostrate myself to anyone except, Lord, to you, and, in so doing, Ishall not be acting in pride. (f) And now, Lord God, King, God of Abraham spare your people! For our ruin isbeing plotted, there are plans to destroy your ancient heritage. (g) Do not overlook your inheritance, which youredeemed from Egypt to be yours. (h) Hear my supplication, have mercy on your heritage, and turn our grief intorejoicing, so that we may live, Lord, to hymn your name. Do not suffer the mouths of those who praise you toperish. (i) And al Israel cried out with al their might, since death was staring them in the face. (k) Queen Estheralso took refuge with the Lord in the mortal peril which had overtaken her. She took off her sumptuous robes andput on sorrowful mourning. Instead of expensive perfumes, she covered her head with ashes and dung. Shemortified her body severely, and the former scenes of her happiness and elegance were now littered with tressestorn from her hair. She besought the Lord God of Israel in these words: (l) My Lord, our King, the Only One,come to my help, for I am alone and have no helper but you and am about to take my life in my hands. (m) Ihave been taught from infancy in the bosom of my family that you, Lord, have chosen Israel out of al the nationsand our ancestors out of al before them, to be your heritage for ever; and that you have treated them as youpromised. (n) But we have sinned against you and you have handed us over to our enemies for paying honour totheir gods. Lord, you are upright. (o) But they are not satisfied with the bitterness of our slavery: they havepledged themselves to their idols to abolish the decree that your own lips have uttered, to blot out your heritage,to stop the mouths of those who praise you, to quench your altar and the glory of your House, (p) and instead toopen the mouths of the heathen, to sing the praise of worthless idols and for ever to idolise a king of flesh. (q) Donot yield your sceptre, Lord, to what does not exist. Never let our ruin be matter for laughter. Turn these plots against their authors, and make an example of the man who leads the attack on us. (r) Remember, Lord; revealyourself in the time of our distress. As for me, give me courage, King of gods and Master of al powers! (s) Putpersuasive words into my mouth when I face the lion; change his feeling into hatred for our enemy, so that hemay meet his end, and al those like him! (t) As for ourselves, save us by your hand, and come to my help, for Iam alone and have no one but you, Lord. (u) You have knowledge of al things, and you know that I hatehonours from the godless, that I loathe the bed of the uncircumcised, of any foreigner whatever. (w) You know Iam under constraint, that I loathe the symbol of my high position bound round my brow when I appear at court; Iloathe it as if it were a filthy rag and do not wear it on my days of leisure. (x) Your servant has not eaten atHaman's table, nor taken pleasure in the royal banquets, nor drunk the wine of libations. (y) Nor has yourservant found pleasure from the day of her promotion until now except in you, Lord, God of Abraham. (z) O God,whose strength prevails over al , listen to the voice of the desperate, save us from the hand of the wicked, andfree me from my fear!	17 Se alejó Mardoqueo y cumplió cuanto Ester le había mandado. (*Ester 4:17-a) Mardoqueo oró al Señor, acordándose de todas sus maravillas, y exclamó: (*Ester 4:17-b) «¡Señor, Señor, Rey Omnipotente! Todo está sometido a tu poder, y no hay quien pueda resistir tu voluntad si has decidido salvar a Israel. (*Ester 4:17-c) Tú hiciste el cielo y la tierra y cuantas maravillas existen bajo el cielo. Eres Señor de todo, y nadie puede oponerse a ti, Señor. (*Ester 4:17-d) Tú lo conoces todo, tú sabes, Señor, que no por insolencia, orgullo o pundonor, hice yo esto de rehusar inclinarme ante el orgulloso Amán, pues gustoso besaría las plantas de sus pies por la salvación de Israel. (*Ester 4:17-e) Pero yo lo hice por no rendir a un hombre gloria por encima de la gloria de Dios; no me postraré ante nadie, sino ante ti solo, Señor; y no dicta el orgullo mi conducta. (*Ester 4:17-f) Ahora, pues, Señor, Dios, Rey, Dios de Abraham, perdona a tu pueblo, porque andan mirando cómo destruirnos y han deseado exterminar la heredad que fue tuya desde siempre. (*Ester 4:17-g) No desprecies tu parte, la que rescataste para ti del país de Egipto. (*Ester 4:17-h) Escucha mi oración, muéstrate propicio a tu heredad; convierte nuestro duelo en alegría, para que, viviendo, cantemos himnos a tu Nombre, Señor. No tapes la boca de los que te alaban». (*Ester 4:17-i) Todo Israel clamaba con todas sus fuerzas, pues tenían la muerte ante los ojos. (*Ester 4:17-k) Por su parte, la reina Ester se refugió en el Señor, presa de mortal angustia. Despojándose de sus magníficos vestidos, se vistió de angustia y duelo. En vez de exquisitos perfumes, echó sobre su cabeza ceniza y suciedad, humilló su cuerpo hasta el extremo, encubrió, con sus desordenados cabellos la gozosa belleza de su cuerpo, y suplicó al Señor, Dios de Israel, diciendo: (*Ester 4:17-l) «Mi Señor y Dios nuestro, tú eres único. Ven en mi socorro, que estoy sola y no tengo socorro sino en ti, y mi vida está en peligro. (*Ester 4:17-m) Yo oí desde mi infancia, en mi tribu paterna, que tú, Señor, elegiste a Israel de entre todos los pueblos, y a nuestros padres de entre todos sus mayores para ser herencia tuya para siempre cumpliendo en su favor cuanto dijiste. (*Ester 4:17-n) Ahora hemos pecado en tu presencia y nos has entregado a nuestros enemigos porque hemos honrado a sus dioses. ¡Justo eres, Señor! (*Ester 4:17-o) Mas no se han contentado con nuestra amarga esclavitud, sino que han puesto sus manos en las manos de sus ídolos para borrar el decreto de tu boca y destruir tu heredad; para cerrar las bocas que te alaban y apagar la gloria de tu Casa y de tu altar; (*Ester 4:17-p) para abrir las bocas de las gentes en alabanza de sus dioses y admirar eternamente a un rey de carne. (*Ester 4:17-q) No entregues, Señor, tu cetro a los que son nada; que no se regocijen por nuestra caída, mas vuelve en contra de ellos sus deseos, y el primero que se alzó contra nosotros has que sirva de escarmiento. (*Ester 4:17-r) Acuérdate, Señor, y date a conocer en el día de nuestra aflicción; y dame a mí valor, rey de los dioses y señor de toda autoridad. (*Ester 4:17-s) Pon en mis labios palabras armoniosas cuando esté en presencia del león; vuelve el odio de su corazón contra el que nos combate para ruina suya y de los que piensan como él. (*Ester 4:17-t) Libranos con tus manos y acude en mi socorro, que estoy sola, y a nadie tengo, sino a ti, Señor. (*Ester 4:17-u) Tú que conoces todas las cosas, sabes que odio la gloria de los malos, que aborrezco el lecho incircunciso y el de todo extranjero. (*Ester 4:17-v) Tú sabes bien la necesidad en que me hallo, que me asquean los emblemas de grandeza que ciñen mi frente los días de gala como asquea el paño menstrual, y que no me los pongo en días de retiro. (*Ester 4:17-x) Que tu sierva no ha comido a la mesa de Amán, que no he tenido a honra los regios festines, ni bebido el vino de las libaciones. (*Ester 4:17-y) Que no tuvo tu sierva instante de alegría, desde su encumbramiento hasta el día de hoy, sino sólo en ti, Señor y Dios de Abraham. (*Ester 4:17-z) Oh Dios, que dominas a todos, oye el clamor de los desesperados, libranos del poder de los malvados y librame a mí de mi temor.
