1 Some time after this, when the king's wrath had subsided, Ahasuerus remembered Vashti, how she hadbehaved, and the measures taken against her.	1 - Dopo che queste cose furono accadute, e che l'indignazione del re Assuero si fu calmata, egli si ricordò di Vasti, e di quel ch'essa aveva fatto e ricevuto.
2 The king's gentlemen-in-waiting said, 'A search should be made on the king's behalf for beautiful youngvirgins,	2 Ed i servi e ministri del re dissero: «Si cerchino per il re delle fanciulle vergini e belle;
3 and the king appoint commissioners throughout the provinces of his realm to bring al these beautifulyoung virgins to the citadel of Susa, to the harem under the authority of Hegai the king's eunuch, custodian ofthe women. Here he wil give them whatever they need for enhancing their beauty,	3 si mandino per tutte le province degl'incaricati in cerca di fanciulle vergini e belle, che le conducano nella città di Susa, e le mettano nel palazzo delle donne, affidandole all'eunuco Egeo preposto e custode delle donne del re: ed abbiano esse tutto quel che è richiesto per la loro acconciatura.
4 and the girl who pleases the king can take Vashti's place as queen.' This advice pleased the king and heacted on it.	4 Quella fra tutte che più piacerà agli occhi del re, quella regnerà in luogo di Vasti». Piacque al re la proposta, e come quelli avevano suggerito, così comandò fosse fatto.
5 Now in the citadel of Susa there lived a Jew cal ed Mordecai son of Jair, son of Shimei, son of Kish, ofthe tribe of Benjamin,	5 Or v'era in Susa un giudeo chiamato Mardocheo, figlio di Jair, figlio di Semei, figlio di Cis, della discendenza di Jemini,
6 who had been deported from Jerusalem among the captives taken away with Jeconiah king of Judah byNebuchadnezzar king of Babylon,	6 stato condotto via da Gerusalemme al tempo di Nabucodonosor re di Babilonia aveva fatto prigioniero Jeconia re di Giuda.
7 and was now bringing up a certain Hadassah, otherwise cal ed Esther, his uncle's daughter, who hadlost both father and mother; the girl had a good figure and a beautiful face, and on the death of her parentsMordecai had adopted her as his daughter.	7 Egli era tutore di Edissa figlia d'un suo fratello, chiamata anche con altro nome Ester, che aveva perduto ambedue i genitori, bella molto e graziosa. Morti a lei il padre e la madre, Mardocheo se l'era adottata come figliuola.
8 On the promulgation of the royal command and edict a great number of girls were brought to the citadelof Susa where they were entrusted to Hegai. Esther, too, was taken to the king's palace and entrusted to Hegai,the custodian of the women.	8 Divulgatosi dunque il comando del re, conducendosi a Susa secondo l'ordine di lui molte belle fanciulle per esser affidate all'eunuco Egeo, anche Ester gli fu consegnata con le altre, per esser custodita tra le donne [del re].
9 The girl pleased him and won his favour. Not only did he quickly provide her with al she needed for herdressing room and her meals, but he gave her seven special maids from the king's household and transferredher and her maids to the best part of the harem.	9 Piacque essa ad Egeo, ed incontrò il suo favore; ed egli comandò ad un eunuco d'affrettarsi ad acconciarla, di assegnarle gli alimenti e sette ancelle bellissime della casa del re, e di ben trattare ed abbigliare tanto lei quanto le sue ancelle.
10 Esther had not divulged her race or parentage, since Mordecai had forbidden her to do so.	10 Essa però non volle fargli sapere di qual nazione e patria ella fosse, avendole Mardocheo dato ordine di tacere affatto su questo argomento.
11 Mordecai walked up and down in front of the courtyard of the harem al day and every day, to learnhow Esther was and how she was being treated.	11 Questi poi passeggiava ogni giorno davanti al vestibolo della casa ove le elette fanciulle erano accolte, prendendosi cura della salute di Ester, e volendo sapere che cosa le fosse accaduto.
12 Each girl had to appear in turn before King Ahasuerus after a delay of twelve months fixed by theregulations for the women; this preparatory period was occupied as fol ows: six months with oil of myrrh, and sixmonths with spices and lotions commonly used for feminine beauty treatment.	12 Prima che venisse la volta per ciascuna fanciulla d'essere introdotta al re, terminato tutto quel che si riferiva alla sua acconciatura, correvano dodici mesi; perchè per sei mesi s'ungevano con olio di mirra, e per altri sei con altri unguenti ed aromi.
13 When each girl went to the king, she was given whatever she wanted to take with her, since she thenmoved from the harem into the royal household.	13 Stando poi per presentarsi al re, ricevevano qualunque cosa chiedessero per ornamento, e poi acconciate come a loro piaceva passavano dall'appartamento delle donne alla camera del re.
14 She went there in the evening, and the fol owing morning returned to another harem entrusted to thecare of Shaashgaz, the king's officer, custodian of the concubines. She did not go to the king any more, unlesshe was particularly pleased with her and had her summoned by name.	14 Quella che v'entrava alla sera ne usciva al mattino, e di lì veniva condotta in altri appartamenti affidati all'eunuco Susagazi governatore delle concubine del re; nè poteva essa presentarsi di nuovo al re, se il re stesso non la voleva, e non la faceva chiamare a nome.
15 But when it was the turn of Esther the daughter of Abihail, whose nephew Mordecai had adopted heras his own daughter, to go into the king's presence, she did not ask for anything beyond what had beenassigned her by Hegai, the king's officer, custodian of the women. Esther won the approval of al who saw her.	15 Così, passato secondo la regola il suo tempo, anche per Ester figlia di Abiail fratello di Mardocheo, e da questi adottata per figlia, s'avvicinava il giorno nel quale avrebbe dovuto esser introdotta al re. Non chiese essa particolari acconciature, ma l'eunuco Egeo le dette egli da adornarsi come a lui parve; era essa infatti molto avvenente, d'incredibil bellezza, graziosa e piacente agli occhi di tutti.
16 She was brought to King Ahasuerus in his royal apartments in the tenth month, which is cal ed Tebeth,in the seventh year of his reign;	16 Fu dunque introdotta nella camera del re Assuero, il mese decimo (chiamato Tebet) dell'anno settimo del regno di lui.
17 and the king liked Esther better than any of the other women; none of the other girls found so muchfavour and approval with him. So he set the royal diadem on her head and proclaimed her queen instead ofVashti.	17 Ed il re l'amò più di tutte le altre donne, ed essa trovò grazia e favore presso di lui più d'ogni altra donna; ed egli le pose in capo il diadema reale, e la fece regnare in luogo di Vasti.
18 The king then gave a great banquet, Esther's banquet, for al his officers-of-state and ministers,decreed a holiday for al the provinces and distributed largesse with royal prodigality.	18 Comandò poi si preparasse un convito splendidissimo a tutti i suoi maggiorenti e ministri, per il matrimonio e le nozze di Ester; concesse larghezze a tutte le province, ed elargì doni con munificenza regale.
19 When Esther, like the other girls, had been transferred to the second harem,	19 Or mentre una seconda volta si cercavano e si raccoglievano delle fanciulle, Mardocheo si stava presso la porta del re;
20 she did not divulge her parentage or race, in obedience to the orders of Mordecai, whose instructionsshe continued to fol ow as when she had been under his care.	20 nè Ester aveva mai manifestata la sua patria e la sua nazione, secondo il comando avuto da lui; quello infatti che egli le prescriveva, Ester l'osservava, e si comportava ancora in tutto com'era solita al tempo nel quale egli l'educava da fanciullina.
21 At this time Mordecai was attached to the Chancel ery and two malcontents, Bigthan and Teresh,officers in the king's service as Guards of the Threshold, plotted to assassinate King Ahasuerus.	21 Stando dunque Mardocheo alla porta del re, Bagata e Tares, due eunuchi del re, che custodivano la porta e sovraintendevano al primo ingresso del palazzo, sdegnati contro il re, volevano insorgere contro di lui ed ucciderlo.
22 Mordecai came to hear of this and informed Queen Esther, who in turn, on Mordecai's authority, toldthe king.	22 Mardocheo scoprì la cosa, e subito la comunicò alla regina Ester; e questa al re, in nome di Mardocheo dal quale l'aveva appresa.
23 The matter was investigated and proved to be true. The two conspirators were sent to the gal ows, andthe incident was recorded in the Annals, in the royal presence.	23 Fattane inquisizione, ed avutane la conferma, furono ambedue quegli eunuchi appiccati ad un patibolo, ed il fatto fu consegnato alla storia, e registrato negli annali alla presenza del re.
