NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 When the uproar of those crowding round the council had subsided, Holofernes, general-in-chief of theAssyrian army, reprimanded Achior in front of the whole crowd of foreigners and Ammonites.	1 A estas palavras, Holofernes encolerizou-se e disse a Aquior:
2 'Achior, who do you think you are, you and the Ephraimite mercenaries, playing the prophet like this withus today, and trying to dissuade us from making war on the people of Israel? You claim their God wil protectthem. And who is God if not Nebuchadnezzar? He himself wil display his power and wipe them off the face ofthe earth, and their God wil certainly not save them.	2 Já que nos predisseste que a nação de Israel será defendida por seu Deus, vou mostrar-te que não há outro deus fora de Nabucodonosor:
3 But we, his servants, shal destroy them as easily as a single individual. They can never resist thestrength of our cavalry.	3 quando os tivermos ferido a todos como a um só homem, perecerás tu também com eles pela espada dos assírios, e todo o Israel desaparecerá contigo.
4 We shal burn them all. Their mountains will be drunk with their blood and their plains filled with theircorpses. Far from being able to resist us, every one of them wil die; thus says King Nebuchadnezzar, lord of thewhole world. For he has spoken, and his words will not prove empty.	4 Assim aprenderás que Nabucodonosor é o Senhor de toda a terra. A espada de meus soldados entrar-te-á pelos flancos e cairás transpassado no meio dos feridos de Israel; não respirarás mais, senão para ser
5 As for you, Achior, you Ammonite mercenary, who in a rash moment said these words, you wil not seemy face again until the day when I have taken my revenge on this brood from Egypt.	5 Se crês na verdade de tua profecia, não desanimes; muda a palidez de tua face, se pensas que minhas palavras não se podem realizar.
6 And then the swords of my soldiers and the spears of my officers wil pierce your sides. You wil falamong their wounded, the moment I turn on Israel.	6 E para que saibas que terás a mesma sorte que eles, serás desde já associado a esse povo, a fim de sofreres com eles os golpes de minha vingança, quando minha espada infligir-lhes o castigo que merecem.
7 My servants wil now take you into the hill-country and leave you near one of the towns in the passes;	7 Então Holofernes ordenou aos seus homens que prendessem Aquior e o levassem a Betúlia para entregá-lo nas mãos dos israelitas.
8 you wil not die, until you share their ruin.	8 Os escravos de Holofernes tomaram-no e se foram através da planície. Ao se aproximarem dos montes, porém, saíram contra eles os atiradores de funda,
9 No need to look so sad if you cherish the secret hope that they wil not be captured! I have spoken; noneof my words will prove idle.'	9 e eles desviaram-se para os lados da montanha, onde ataram Aquior a uma árvore pelas mãos e pés. Abandonaram-no ali amarrado, e voltaram para o seu senhor.
10 Holofernes having commanded his tent-orderlies to seize Achior, to take him to Bethulia and to handhim over to the Israelites,	10 Ora, os israelitas que desciam de Betúlia encontraram-no e, soltando-o, levaram-no para a cidade. Puseram-no no meio do povo e perguntaram-lhe o motivo por que os assírios o deixaram amarrado.
11 the orderlies took him, escorted him out of the camp and across the plain, and then, making for the hil -country, reached the springs below Bethulia.	11 (Naquele tempo, Betúlia era governada por Ozias, filho de Mica, da tribo de Simeão, e por Carmi, também chamado Gotoniel).
12 As soon as the men of the town sighted them, they snatched up their weapons, left the town and madefor the mountain tops, while al the slingers pelted them with stones to prevent them from coming up.	12 E, estando no meio dos anciãos e em presença de todo o povo, Aquior contou tudo o que tinha respondido quando Holofernes o interrogara, e como a gente de Holofernes quis matá-lo por ter ele falado assim;
13 However, they managed to take cover at the foot of the slope, where they bound Achior and left himlying at the bottom of the mountain and returned to their master.	13 e como Holofernes, encolerizado, ordenara que ele fosse por esse motivo entregue aos israelitas, a fim de que, após a vitória sobre eles, ele fizesse perecer também Aquior com diversos suplícios, porque ele dissera que o Deus do céu era o defensor de Israel.
14 The Israelites then came down from their town, stopped by him, unbound him and took him to Bethulia,where they brought him before the chief men of the town,	14 Após essa narração de Aquior, todo o povo se prostrou com o rosto por terra em adoração diante do Senhor, e todos, unidos de coração, oraram ao Senhor com gemidos e prantos:
15 who at that time were Uzziah son of Micah of the tribe of Simeon, Chabris son of Gothoniel andCharmis son of Melchiel.	15 Senhor, disseram eles, Deus do céu e da terra, vede o seu orgulho e olhai para a nossa humilhação. Lançai os vossos olhos sobre os vossos fiéis; mostrai que não abandonais aqueles que confiam em vós, mas que
16 These summoned al the elders of the town. The young men and the women also hurried to theassembly. Achior was made to stand with al the people surrounding him, and Uzziah questioned him about whathad happened.	16 Acabada a lamentação, e terminada a prece do povo, que durou um dia todo, encorajaram Aquior, dizendo:
17 He answered by tel ing them what had been said at Holofernes' council, and what he himself had saidin the presence of the Assyrian leaders, and how Holofernes had bragged of what he would do to the House ofIsrael.	17 O Deus de nossos pais, cujo poder proclamaste, conceder-te-á a recompensa de veres tu a ruína deles.
18 At this the people fel to the ground and worshipped God.	18 Quando o Senhor nosso Deus tiver livrado os seus servos, que ele esteja também contigo no meio de nós, a fim de que vivas, tu e os teus, conosco, como for do teu agrado.
19 'Lord God of heaven,' they cried, 'take notice of their arrogance and have pity on the humiliation of ourrace. Look kindly today on those who are consecrated to you.'	19 Então Ozias, despedida a assembléia, recebeu Aquior em sua casa e ofereceu-lhe uma grande ceia.
20 They then spoke reassuringly to Achior and praised him warmly.	20 E foram convidados a ela todos os anciãos, (pois já) tinha terminado o jejum, e comeram juntos alegremente.
21 After the assembly Uzziah took him home and gave a banquet for the elders; al that night they cal edon the God of Israel for help.	21 Depois foi convocado todo o povo e oraram durante toda a noite no lugar onde estavam reunidos, pedindo socorro ao Deus de Israel.
