1 When the uproar of those crowding round the council had subsided, Holofernes, general-in-chief of theAssyrian army, reprimanded Achior in front of the whole crowd of foreigners and Ammonites.	1 Cessata l’agitazione della gente radunata attorno al consiglio militare, parlò Oloferne, comandante supremo dell’esercito di Assur, rivolgendosi ad Achiòr, alla presenza di tutta quella folla di stranieri, e a tutti i Moabiti:
2 'Achior, who do you think you are, you and the Ephraimite mercenaries, playing the prophet like this withus today, and trying to dissuade us from making war on the people of Israel? You claim their God wil protectthem. And who is God if not Nebuchadnezzar? He himself wil display his power and wipe them off the face ofthe earth, and their God wil certainly not save them.	2 «Chi sei tu, o Achiòr, e voi, mercenari di Èfraim, per profetare in mezzo a noi come hai fatto oggi e suggerire di non combattere il popolo d’Israele, perché il loro Dio li proteggerà dall’alto? E chi è dio se non Nabucodònosor? Questi manderà il suo esercito e li sterminerà dalla faccia della terra, né il loro Dio potrà liberarli.
3 But we, his servants, shal destroy them as easily as a single individual. They can never resist thestrength of our cavalry.	3 Saremo noi suoi servi a spazzarli via come un sol uomo, perché non potranno sostenere l’impeto dei nostri cavalli.
4 We shal burn them all. Their mountains will be drunk with their blood and their plains filled with theircorpses. Far from being able to resist us, every one of them wil die; thus says King Nebuchadnezzar, lord of thewhole world. For he has spoken, and his words will not prove empty.	4 Li bruceremo in casa loro, i loro monti si inebrieranno del loro sangue, i loro campi si colmeranno dei loro cadaveri, né potrà resistere la pianta dei loro piedi davanti a noi, ma saranno completamente distrutti. Questo dice Nabucodònosor, il signore di tutta la terra: così ha parlato e le sue parole non potranno essere smentite.
5 As for you, Achior, you Ammonite mercenary, who in a rash moment said these words, you wil not seemy face again until the day when I have taken my revenge on this brood from Egypt.	5 Quanto a te, Achiòr, mercenario di Ammon, che hai pronunciato queste parole nel giorno della tua sventura, non vedrai più la mia faccia, da oggi fino a quando farò vendetta di questa razza che viene dall’Egitto.
6 And then the swords of my soldiers and the spears of my officers wil pierce your sides. You wil falamong their wounded, the moment I turn on Israel.	6 Allora il ferro dei miei soldati e la numerosa schiera dei miei ministri trapasserà i tuoi fianchi, e tu cadrai fra i loro cadaveri quando io tornerò a vederti.
7 My servants wil now take you into the hill-country and leave you near one of the towns in the passes;	7 I miei servi ora ti esporranno sulla montagna e ti lasceranno in una delle città delle alture;
8 you wil not die, until you share their ruin.	8 non morirai finché non sarai sterminato con quella gente.
9 No need to look so sad if you cherish the secret hope that they wil not be captured! I have spoken; noneof my words will prove idle.'	9 Ma se in cuor tuo speri davvero che costoro non saranno catturati, non c’è bisogno che il tuo aspetto sia così depresso. Ho parlato: nessuna mia parola andrà a vuoto».
10 Holofernes having commanded his tent-orderlies to seize Achior, to take him to Bethulia and to handhim over to the Israelites,	10 Allora Oloferne diede ordine ai suoi servi, che erano di turno nella sua tenda, di prendere Achiòr, di condurlo vicino a Betùlia e di abbandonarlo nelle mani degli Israeliti.
11 the orderlies took him, escorted him out of the camp and across the plain, and then, making for the hil -country, reached the springs below Bethulia.	11 I suoi servi lo presero e lo condussero fuori dell’accampamento verso la pianura, poi dalla pianura lo spinsero verso la montagna e arrivarono alle fonti che erano sotto Betùlia.
12 As soon as the men of the town sighted them, they snatched up their weapons, left the town and madefor the mountain tops, while al the slingers pelted them with stones to prevent them from coming up.	12 Quando gli uomini della città li scorsero sulla cresta del monte, presero le armi e uscirono dalla città dirigendosi verso la cima del monte. Tutti i frombolieri occuparono la via di accesso e si misero a lanciare pietre su di loro.
13 However, they managed to take cover at the foot of the slope, where they bound Achior and left himlying at the bottom of the mountain and returned to their master.	13 Ridiscesi al riparo del monte, legarono Achiòr e lo abbandonarono, gettandolo a terra alle falde del monte; quindi fecero ritorno dal loro signore.
14 The Israelites then came down from their town, stopped by him, unbound him and took him to Bethulia,where they brought him before the chief men of the town,	14 Scesi dalla loro città, gli Israeliti si avvicinarono a lui, lo slegarono, lo condussero a Betùlia e lo presentarono ai capi della loro città,
15 who at that time were Uzziah son of Micah of the tribe of Simeon, Chabris son of Gothoniel andCharmis son of Melchiel.	15 che in quel tempo erano Ozia, figlio di Mica, della tribù di Simeone, Cabrì, figlio di Gotonièl, e Carmì, figlio di Melchièl.
16 These summoned al the elders of the town. The young men and the women also hurried to theassembly. Achior was made to stand with al the people surrounding him, and Uzziah questioned him about whathad happened.	16 Radunarono subito tutti gli anziani della città, e tutti i giovani e le donne accorsero al luogo del raduno. Posero Achiòr in mezzo a tutto il popolo e Ozia lo interrogò sull’accaduto.
17 He answered by tel ing them what had been said at Holofernes' council, and what he himself had saidin the presence of the Assyrian leaders, and how Holofernes had bragged of what he would do to the House ofIsrael.	17 In risposta riferì loro le parole del consiglio militare di Oloferne, tutto il discorso che Oloferne aveva pronunciato in mezzo ai capi degli Assiri e quello che con arroganza aveva detto contro la casa d’Israele.
18 At this the people fel to the ground and worshipped God.	18 Allora tutto il popolo si prostrò ad adorare Dio e alzò questa supplica:
19 'Lord God of heaven,' they cried, 'take notice of their arrogance and have pity on the humiliation of ourrace. Look kindly today on those who are consecrated to you.'	19 «Signore, Dio del cielo, guarda la loro superbia, abbi pietà dell’umiliazione della nostra stirpe e guarda benigno in questo giorno il volto di coloro che sono consacrati a te».
20 They then spoke reassuringly to Achior and praised him warmly.	20 Poi confortarono Achiòr e gli rivolsero parole di grande lode.
21 After the assembly Uzziah took him home and gave a banquet for the elders; al that night they cal edon the God of Israel for help.	21 Ozia, da parte sua, dopo il raduno lo accolse nella sua casa e offrì un banchetto a tutti gli anziani, e per tutta quella notte invocarono l’aiuto del Dio d’Israele.
