1 Break into song for my God, to the tambourine, sing in honour of the Lord, to the cymbal, let psalm andcanticle mingle for him, extol his name, invoke it!	1 - Allora Giuditta cantò al Signore il seguente cantico e disse:
2 For the Lord is a God who breaks battle-lines; he has pitched his camp in the middle of his people todeliver me from the hands of my oppressors.	2 « Inneggiate al Signore coi timpani, cantate al Signore coi cembali, intonategli un nuovo salmo, esaltate ed invocate il suo nome.
3 Assyria came down from the mountains of the north, came with tens of thousands of his army. Theirmultitude blocked the ravines, their horses covered the hil s.	3 Il Signore disperde gli eserciti; il suo nome è " Il Signore ".
4 He threatened to burn up my country, destroy my young men with the sword, dash my sucklings to theground, make prey of my little ones, carry off my maidens;	4 Egli ha posto le sue tende in mezzo al suo popolo, per cavarci dalle mani di tutt'i nostri nemici.
5 but the Lord Almighty has thwarted them by a woman's hand.	5 Assur venne da' monti, da aquilone, con la moltitudine del suo esercito,
6 For their hero did not fall at the young men's hands, it was not the sons of Titans struck him down, noproud giants made that attack, but Judith, the daughter of Merari, who disarmed him with the beauty of her face.	6 in tal numero da ostruire i torrenti, ed i suoi cavalieri ricopriron le valli. Disse che avrebbe messa a fuoco la mia terra, uccisi di spada i miei giovani, fatta preda de' pargoli miei, condotte schiave le mie vergini.
7 She laid aside her widow's dress to raise up those who were oppressed in Israel; she anointed her facewith perfume,	7 Ma il Signore onnipotente l'ha atterrato, e l'ha dato in mano ad una donna che l'ha trafitto.
8 bound her hair under a turban, put on a linen gown to seduce him.	8 Giacché il forte tra loro non è stato abbattuto da' giovani, non l'hanno percosso i figli di Titano, nè gli si sono opposti eccelsi giganti; ma l'ha messo sossopra, con la bellezza del suo volto, Giuditta figlia di Merari.
9 Her sandal ravished his eye, her beauty took his soul prisoner and the scimitar cut through his neck!	9 Ella infatti depose il vestito della sua vedovanza, e prese quello della letizia, come per le feste dei figli d'Israele.
10 The Persians trembled at her boldness, the Medes were daunted by her daring.	10 S'unse d'unguento la faccia, riunì con la mitra i suoi capelli, indossò una veste nuova per ingannarlo.
11 These were struck with fear when my lowly ones raised the war cry, these were seized with terrorwhen my weak ones shouted, and when they raised their voices these gave ground.	11 I suoi sandali rapirono gli occhi di lui, la sua bellezza fece prigioniera l'anima di lui; ed essa col ferro gli tagliò la testa.
12 The children of mere girls ran them through, pierced them like the offspring of deserters. Theyperished in the battle of my Lord!	12 La fortezza di lei fece spavento ai Persiani, e la sua audacia ai Medi.
13 I shal sing a new song to my God. Lord, you are great, you are glorious, wonderful y strong,unconquerable.	13 Il campo degli Assiri alzò le strida, quando uscirono i miei poveretti arsi dalla sete.
14 May your whole creation serve you! For you spoke and things came into being, you sent your breathand they were put together, and no one can resist your voice.	14 Ragazzi imberbi li trafissero, e li uccisero come ragazzi in fuga. Son periti in battaglia dinanzi al Signore Dio mio.
15 Should mountains be tossed from their foundations to mingle with the waves, should rocks melt likewax before your face, to those who fear you, you would stil be merciful.	15 Cantiamo un inno al Signore; cantiamo un inno nuovo al Dio nostro.
16 A little thing indeed is a sweetly smel ing sacrifice, stil less the fat burned for you in burnt offering; butwhoever fears the Lord is great for ever.	16 Signore Adonai, grande se' tu, eccelso in potenza, e nessuno può vincerti.
17 Woe to the nations who rise against my race! The Lord Almighty wil punish them on judgement day.He will send fire and worms in their flesh and they wil weep with pain for evermore.	17 Ti servano tutte le tue creature, perchè tu dicesti, e furono fatte, mandasti il tuo spirito, e furon create, e non v'è chi possa resistere al tuo comando.
18 When they reached Jerusalem they fel on their faces before God and, once the people had beenpurified, they presented their burnt offerings, voluntary offerings and gifts.	18 I monti ed i mari si moveranno da' fondamenti; le pietre si struggeranno davanti a te come cera.
19 Al Holofernes' property given her by the people, and the canopy she herself had stripped from hisbed, Judith vowed to God as a dedicated offering.	19 Ma quelli che ti temono saranno davanti a te grandi in ogni cosa,
20 For three months the people gave themselves up to rejoicings in front of the Temple in Jerusalem,where Judith stayed with them.	20 Guai alla nazione che si leverà contro il mio popolo! Il Signore onnipotente ne prenderà vendetta, al giorno del giudizio là visiterà,
21 When this was over, everyone returned home. Judith went back to Bethulia and lived on her property;as long as she lived, she enjoyed a great reputation throughout the country.	21 Manderà fuoco e venni nelle loro carni, si che brucino e penino in eterno. »
22 She had many suitors, but al her days, from the time her husband Manasseh died and was gatheredto his people, she never gave herself to another man.	22 Dopo queste cose, tutto il popolo in seguito alla vittoria venne in Gerusalemme per adorare il Signore; e tutti, poi che si furon purificati, offrirono olocausti e voti secondo le loro promesse.
23 Her fame spread more and more, the older she grew in her husband's house; she lived to the age ofone hundred and five. She emancipated her maid, then died in Bethulia and was buried in the cave whereManasseh her husband lay.	23 Giuditta inoltre offrì in dono votivo contro l'oblio tutti gli arnesi militari d'Oloferne che il popolo le aveva dati, e la cortina che essa stessa aveva staccata dal letto di lui.
24 The House of Israel mourned her for seven days. Before her death she had distributed her propertyamong her own relations and those of her husband Manasseh.	24 e tutto il popolo era in festa dinanzi al luogo santo; per tre mesi fu celebrata con Giuditta la festa di questa vittoria.
25 Never again during the lifetime of Judith, nor indeed for a long time after her death, did anyone troublethe Israelites.	25 Passato quel tempo, tornarono tutti alle loro case, e Giuditta era grande in Betulia, e la più illustre in tutto Israele.
	26 Univa anche al valore la castità, non avendo piò conosciuto uomo in tutta la vita dacché le morì il marito Manasse.
	27 Ed ai giorni di festa usciva fuori con gran gloria.
	28 Abitò dunque nella casa del marito sino a centocinque anni, avendo rimandata libera la sua ancella. Poi morì, e fu sepolta in Betulia presso il marito.
	29 E tutto il popolo la pianse per sette giorni.
	30 Sinché ella visse, non vi fu chi turbasse la pace d'Israele; e così per molti anni dopo la sua morte.
	31 Il giorno poi della festa di questa vittoria é annoverato dagli Ebrei tra' giorni santi, e vien celebrato dai Giudei da quel tempo insino ad oggi.
