1 With that he had her brought in to where his silver dinner service was already laid, and had his ownfood served to her and his own wine poured out for her.	1 Holoferne ordonna alors de la conduire là où l’on avait préparé sa vaisselle d’argent, de lui servir de ses mets et de lui donner à boire de son vin.
2 But Judith said, 'I would rather not eat this, in case I incur some fault. What I have brought wil beenough for me.'	2 Mais Judith répondit: “Je n’en mangerai pas, pour ne pas commettre de faute. J’ai apporté suffisamment avec moi.”
3 'Suppose your provisions run out,' Holofernes asked, 'how could we get more of the same sort? Wehave no one belonging to your race here.'	3 Holoferne lui dit: “Si tes provisions viennent à se terminer, où pourrons-nous trouver une nourriture semblable pour te la donner? Car il n’y a avec nous personne de ta race.”
4 'May your soul live, my lord,' Judith answered, 'the Lord wil have used me to accomplish his plan,before your servant has finished these provisions.'	4 Mais Judith lui dit: “Aussi vrai que tu es vivant, mon seigneur, ta servante n’aura pas fini de manger ses provisions que le Seigneur aura exécuté par ma main ce qu’il a projeté.”
5 Holofernes' adjutants then took her to a tent where she slept until midnight. A little before the morningwatch, she got up.	5 Les officiers d’Holoferne la menèrent alors à sa tente. Elle dormit jusqu’au milieu de la nuit, puis elle se leva avant l’aube.
6 She had already sent this request to Holofernes, 'Let my lord kindly give orders for your servant to beal owed to go out and pray,'	6 Elle envoya prévenir Holoferne: “Mon seigneur voudra bien ordonner qu’on laisse ta servante sortir pour la prière.”
7 and Holofernes had ordered his guards not to prevent her. She stayed in the camp for three days; she went out each night to the val ey of Bethulia and washed at the spring where the picket had been posted.	7 Holoferne ordonna à ses gardes de ne pas l’empêcher. Elle resta trois jours dans le camp, mais la nuit elle se rendait dans le vallon de Béthulie, puis elle se baignait dans le camp établi à la source d’eau.
8 As she went she prayed to the Lord God of Israel to guide her in her plan to relieve the children of herpeople.	8 Lorsqu’elle remontait, elle priait le Seigneur, le Dieu d’Israël, de conduire ses pas pour le salut de son peuple.
9 Having purified herself, she would return and stay in her tent until her meal was brought her in theevening.	9 Une fois rentrée, purifiée, elle restait dans sa tente jusqu’au moment où on lui servait son repas du soir.
10 On the fourth day Holofernes gave a banquet, inviting only his own staff and none of the other officers.	10 Le quatrième jour, Holoferne fit un grand repas pour ses seuls conseillers; il n’invita aucun autre fonctionnaire.
11 He said to Bagoas, the officer in charge of his personal affairs, 'Go and persuade that Hebrew womanyou are looking after to come and join us and eat and drink in our company.	11 Mais il dit à Bagoas, l’eunuque de service: “Va donc persuader cette fille des Hébreux qui est chez toi, de venir chez nous, pour manger et boire avec nous.
12 We shal be disgraced if we let a woman like this go without seducing her. If we do not seduce her,everyone wil laugh at us!'	12 Ce serait vraiment une honte pour nous de laisser partir une telle femme sans lui avoir parlé à notre façon. Si nous ne réussissons pas, elle se moquera bien de nous.”
13 Bagoas then left Holofernes and went to see Judith. 'Would this young and lovely woman condescendto come to my lord?' he asked. 'She will occupy the seat of honour opposite him, drink the joyful wine with usand be treated today like one of the Assyrian ladies who stand in the palace of Nebuchadnezzar.'	13 Bagoas sortit donc de chez Holoferne et entra dans la tente de Judith. Il lui dit: “Que cette belle servante n’hésite pas à venir chez mon seigneur. Elle sera entourée d’honneurs et elle boira avec nous le vin de la fête. Ce jour-là, elle sera comme l’une des femmes assyriennes qui sont à demeure dans le palais de Nabukodonozor.”
14 'Who am I', Judith replied, 'to resist my lord? I shal not hesitate to do whatever he wishes, and doingthis wil be my joy to my dying day.'	14 Judith répondit: “Qui suis-je pour refuser l’invitation de mon Seigneur? Je ferai absolument tout ce qui est agréable à ses yeux, et ce sera pour moi une grande joie jusqu’au jour de ma mort.”
15 So she got up and put on her dress and al her feminine adornments. Her maid preceded her, and onthe floor in front of Holofernes spread the fleece which Bagoas had given Judith for her daily use to lie on as sheate.	15 Elle se leva, mit ses vêtements de fête et tous ses bijoux; sa servante marchait devant elle. Elle étala pour elle sur le sol, devant Holoferne, les couvertures qu’elle avait reçues de Bagoas, pour son usage personnel. Ainsi elle pourrait s’installer à terre pour manger.
16 Judith came in and took her place. The heart of Holofernes was ravished at the sight; his very soulwas stirred. He was seized with a violent desire to sleep with her; and indeed since the first day he saw her, hehad been waiting for an opportunity to seduce her.	16 Judith entra et s’installa par terre. Holoferne n’avait plus de regards que pour elle. Il en avait l’esprit troublé et il fut pris d’un violent désir de s’unir à elle. En effet, depuis le jour où il l’avait vue, il cherchait une occasion de la séduire.
17 'Drink then!' Holofernes said. 'Enjoy yourself with us!'	17 Il lui dit: “Allez, bois, partage notre fête!”
18 'I am delighted to do so, my lord, for since my birth I have never felt my life more worthwhile thantoday.'	18 Judith répondit: “Je boirai donc seigneur, car, depuis que je suis au monde, jamais la vie ne m’a paru plus belle qu’aujourd’hui.”
19 She took what her maid had prepared, and ate and drank facing him.	19 Elle se servit, mangea et but à côté de lui ce que sa servante avait préparé.
20 Holofernes was so enchanted with her that he drank far more wine than he had drunk on any otherday in his life.	20 Quant à Holoferne, il était si joyeux de sa présence qu’il but énormément de vin, beaucoup plus qu’il n’en avait jamais bu en un seul jour depuis sa naissance.
