NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
When Sanbal at, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab and our other enemies heard that I had rebuilt the wal andthat not a single gap was left -- though at that time I had not fixed the doors to the gates-1 Factum est autem, cum audisset Sanaballat, et Tobias, et Gossem Arabs, et ceteri inimici nostri, quod ædificassem ego murum, et non esset in ipso residua interruptio (usque ad tempus autem illud valvas non posueram in portis),
Sanbal at and Geshem sent me this message, 'Come and meet us at Ha-Chephirim in the Vale of Ono.'But they had evil designs on me.2 miserunt Sanaballat et Gossem ad me, dicentes : Veni, et percutiamus fœdus pariter in viculis in campo Ono. Ipsi autem cogitabant ut facerent mihi malum.
So I sent messengers to them to say, 'I am engaged in a great undertaking, so I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?'3 Misi ergo ad eos nuntios, dicens : Opus grande ego facio, et non possum descendere, ne forte negligatur cum venero, et descendero ad vos.
Four times they sent me the same invitation and I made them the same reply.4 Miserunt autem ad me secundum verbum hoc per quatuor vices : et respondi eis juxta sermonem priorem.
The fifth time, with the same purpose in mind, Sanballat sent me his servant bearing an open letter.5 Et misit ad me Sanaballat juxta verbum prius quinta vice puerum suum, et epistolam habebat in manu sua scriptam hoc modo :
It ran, 'There is a rumour among the nations -- and Gashmu confirms it -- that you and the Jews arethinking of rebel ing, which is why you are rebuilding the wal , and you intend to become their king;6 In gentibus auditum est, et Gossem dixit, quod tu et Judæi cogitetis rebellare, et propterea ædifices murum, et levare te velis super eos regem : propter quam causam
and that you have even briefed prophets to acclaim you in Jerusalem with the cry, "There is a king inJudah!" Now, these rumours are going to reach the king; so you had better come and discuss them with us.'7 et prophetas posueris, qui prædicent de te in Jerusalem, dicentes : Rex in Judæa est. Auditurus est rex verba hæc : idcirco nunc veni, ut ineamus consilium pariter.
To this I sent him the fol owing reply, 'As regards what you say, nothing of the sort has occurred; it is afigment of your own imagination.'8 Et misi ad eos, dicens : Non est factum secundum verba hæc, quæ tu loqueris : de corde enim tuo tu componis hæc.
For they were all trying to terrorise us, thinking, 'They wil become demoralised over the work and it wilnot get finished.' But my morale rose even higher.9 Omnes enim hi terrebant nos, cogitantes quod cessarent manus nostræ ab opere, et quiesceremus : quam ob causam magis confortavi manus meas.
Then, when I went to visit Shemaiah son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, since he was prevented fromcoming to me, he said: We must gather at the Temple of God, inside the sanctuary itself; we must shut thesanctuary doors, for they are coming to kil you, they are coming to kil you tonight!10 Et ingressus sum domum Semaiæ filii Dalaiæ filii Metabeel secreto. Qui ait : Tractemus nobiscum in domo Dei in medio templi, et claudamus portas ædis : quia venturi sunt ut interficiant te, et nocte venturi sunt ad occidendum te.
But I retorted, 'Should a man like me run away? Would a man like me go into the Temple to save hislife? I shal not go in!'11 Et dixi : Num quisquam similis mei fugit ? et quis ut ego ingredietur templum, et vivet ? non ingrediar.
I realised that God had not sent him to say this, but that he had produced this prophecy for mebecause Tobiah was paying him12 Et intellexi quod Deus non misisset eum, sed quasi vaticinans locutus esset ad me, et Tobias et Sanaballat conduxissent eum.
to terrorise me into doing as he said and committing a sin, so that they would have grounds forblackening my reputation and blaming me.13 Acceperat enim pretium, ut territus facerem, et peccarem, et haberent malum quod exprobrarent mihi.
Remember Tobiah, my God, for what he did; and Noadiah the prophetess, and the other prophetswho tried to terrorise me.14 Memento mei, Domine, pro Tobia et Sanaballat, juxta opera eorum talia : sed et Noadiæ prophetæ, et ceterorum prophetarum, qui terrebant me.
The wall was finished within fifty-two days, on the twenty-fifth of Elul.15 Completus est autem murus vigesimo quinto die mensis Elul, quinquaginta duobus diebus.
When al our enemies heard about it and al the surrounding nations saw it, they thought it a wonderful thing, because they realised that this work had been accomplished by the power of our God.16 Factum est ergo cum audissent omnes inimici nostri, ut timerent universæ gentes quæ erant in circuitu nostro, et conciderent intra semetipsos, et scirent quod a Deo factum esset opus hoc.
During this same period, the nobles of Judah kept sending letter after letter to Tobiah, and letters fromTobiah kept arriving for them;17 Sed et in diebus illis multæ optimatum Judæorum epistolæ mittebantur ad Tobiam, et a Tobia veniebant ad eos.
for he had many sworn to his interest in Judah, since he was son-in-law to Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshul am son of Berechiah.18 Multi enim erant in Judæa habentes juramentum ejus, quia gener erat Secheniæ filii Area, et Johanan filius ejus acceperat filiam Mosollam filii Barachiæ :
They even cried up his good deeds in my presence, and they reported what I said back to him. AndTobiah kept sending letters to terrorise me.19 sed et laudabant eum coram me, et verba mea nuntiabant ei : et Tobias mittebat epistolas ut terreret me.
