Nehemiah 6

1 When Sanbal at, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab and our other enemies heard that I had rebuilt the wal andthat not a single gap was left -- though at that time I had not fixed the doors to the gates-	1 Ma avendo udito Sanaballath, e Tobia, e Gossem Arabo, e gli altri nostri nemici, com'io avea fabbricate le mura: e come non vi restava più apertura (non si eran però ancora messe le imposte alle porte;)
2 Sanbal at and Geshem sent me this message, 'Come and meet us at Ha-Chephirim in the Vale of Ono.'But they had evil designs on me.	2 Sanaballath, e Gossem mi mandarono a dire: Vieni, e facciamo alleanza, tra noi in qualcheduno de' villaggi della campagna di Ono: ma eglino pensavano a farmi del male.
3 So I sent messengers to them to say, 'I am engaged in a great undertaking, so I cannot come down.Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?'	3 Io pertanto mandai gente a dir loro: Ho per le mani un gran lavoro, e non posso venire, aftinché non resti trascurato, s' io parto per venire a voi.
4 Four times they sent me the same invitation and I made them the same reply.	4 Ed ei mandarono per ben quattro volte a dirmi la stessa cosa: e io risposi loro, come da prima.
5 The fifth time, with the same purpose in mind, Sanballat sent me his servant bearing an open letter.	5 E Sanaballath mi mandò per lo stesso fine di prima la quinta volta un suo servo, che portava una lettera di questo tenore:
6 It ran, 'There is a rumour among the nations -- and Gashmu confirms it -- that you and the Jews arethinking of rebel ing, which is why you are rebuilding the wal , and you intend to become their king;	6 Si è divulgato tralle genti, e Gossem lo afferma, che tu, e i Giudei meditate ribellione, e per questo tu rialzi le mura, e vuoi farti loro re: e che a questo fine
7 and that you have even briefed prophets to acclaim you in Jerusalem with the cry, "There is a king inJudah!" Now, these rumours are going to reach the king; so you had better come and discuss them with us.'	7 Tu hai pronti de' profeti, i quali ti vadano encomiando per Gerusalemme, e dicano: Egli è il re della Giudea. Queste cose il re le saprà: per questo vieni tosto, affinchè consultiamo insieme.
8 To this I sent him the fol owing reply, 'As regards what you say, nothing of the sort has occurred; it is afigment of your own imagination.'	8 Ma io gli mandai a dire: La cosa non istà, come tu dici: perocché tu crei in cuor tuo queste cose.
9 For they were all trying to terrorise us, thinking, 'They wil become demoralised over the work and it wilnot get finished.' But my morale rose even higher.	9 Conciossiachè tutti coloro ci mettevano degli spauracchi, sperando di ritrarci dal lavoro, e di farcelo abbandonare. Ma io per questo stesso mi animai maggiormente,
10 Then, when I went to visit Shemaiah son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, since he was prevented fromcoming to me, he said: We must gather at the Temple of God, inside the sanctuary itself; we must shut thesanctuary doors, for they are coming to kil you, they are coming to kil you tonight!	10 E andai di nascosto a casa di Semaia figliuolo di Dalai, figliuolo di Metabeel. Il quale disse: Andiamo a discorrerla tra di noi nella casa di Dio nel mezzo del tempio, e chiudiamo le porte: perocché coloro sono per venire a ucciderti, e verranno di notte per darti morte.
11 But I retorted, 'Should a man like me run away? Would a man like me go into the Temple to save hislife? I shal not go in!'	11 Ma io dissi: Forse un uomo come me si dà alla fuga? e un uomo qual son io, potrà entrare nel tempio, e salvarsi? io non vi anderò.
12 I realised that God had not sent him to say this, but that he had produced this prophecy for mebecause Tobiah was paying him	12 E io compresi, ch'ei non era mandato da Dio, e mi avea parlato quasi fosse uomo ispirato, ma Tobia, e Sanaballath lo aveano comperato:
13 to terrorise me into doing as he said and committing a sin, so that they would have grounds forblackening my reputation and blaming me.	13 Perocché egli era stato pagato per atterrirmi, e farmi peccare, onde quegli avesser ragione di rimproverarmi.
14 Remember Tobiah, my God, for what he did; and Noadiah the prophetess, and the other prophetswho tried to terrorise me.	14 Ricordati di me, o Signore, per riguardo ai raggiri di Tobia, e di Sanaballath, e anche di Noadia profeta, e degli altri profeti, i quali mi facevano paura.
15 The wall was finished within fifty-two days, on the twenty-fifth of Elul.	15 Or le mura furon condotte a fine ai venticinque del mese di Elul, in cinquantadue giorni.
16 When al our enemies heard about it and al the surrounding nations saw it, they thought it a wonderful thing, because they realised that this work had been accomplished by the power of our God.	16 Or quando ebber saputo questo tutti i nostri nemici, s'intimorirono tutte le nazioni circonvicine, e si sbigottirono in cuor loro, conoscendo che questa era opera fatta da Dio.
17 During this same period, the nobles of Judah kept sending letter after letter to Tobiah, and letters fromTobiah kept arriving for them;	17 E per quel tempo andavano, e venivano lettere molte de' magnati Giudei a Tobia, e di Tobia a quelli.
18 for he had many sworn to his interest in Judah, since he was son-in-law to Shecaniah son of Arah,and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshul am son of Berechiah.	18 Perocché molti erano nella Giudea, che gli avean giurata amistà, perchè egli era genero di Sechenia figliuolo di Area, e Johanan suo figliuolo avea sposata la figliuola di Mosollam figliuolo di Barachia:
19 They even cried up his good deeds in my presence, and they reported what I said back to him. AndTobiah kept sending letters to terrorise me.	19 Ed ei ne facevano encomi in mia Presenza, e a lui riferivano quel, ch'io diceva. E Tobia scriveva lettere per atterrirmi.
