Ezra 4

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building the Temple of Yahweh,God of Israel,	1 Cuando los enemigos de Judá y de Benjamín se enteraron de que los antiguos exiliados estaban construyendo un Templo para el Señor, el Dios de Israel,
2 they came to Zerubbabel and Jeshua and the heads of families and said, 'Let us help you build, for weresort to your God as you do and we have been sacrificing to him since the time of Esarhaddon king of Assyria,who brought us here.'	2 se presentaron a Zorobabel, a Josué y a los jefes de familia, y les dijeron: «Permítannos edificar junto con ustedes, porque también nosotros buscamos al mismo Dios y le ofrecemos sacrificios, desde que Asharadón, rey de Asiria, nos trajo aquí».
3 Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the other heads of Israelite families replied, 'It is out of the question that youshould join us in building a Temple for our God. We shal build for Yahweh, God of Israel, on our own, as KingCyrus king of Persia has commanded us.'	3 Zorobabel, Josué y los demás jefes de familia israelitas les respondieron: «No podemos edificar junto con ustedes una Casa para nuestro Dios: la edificaremos nosotros solos para el Señor, el Dios de Israel, como lo ordenó Ciro, rey de Persia».
4 The people of the country then set about demoralising the people of Judah and deterring them frombuilding;	4 Entonces la gente del país, empezó a desanimar y a atemorizar al pueblo de Judá, para que no siguiera edificando.
5 they also bribed counsellors against them to frustrate their purpose throughout the lifetime of Cyrus kingof Persia right on into the reign of Darius king of Persia.	5 Incluso, sobornaron contra ellos a algunos consejeros, para hacer fracasar el proyecto, y lo consiguieron durante todo el tiempo de Ciro, rey de Persia, hasta el reinado de Darío, rey de Persia.
6 In the reign of Xerxes, at the beginning of his reign, they drew up an accusation against the inhabitantsof Judah and Jerusalem.	6 Al comienzo del reinado de Jerjes, ellos presentaron por escrito una denuncia contra los habitantes de Judá y de Jerusalén.
7 In the days of Artaxerxes, Mithredath, Tabeel and their other associates wrote to Artaxerxes king ofPersia against Jerusalem; the text of the letter was written in Aramaic writing and dialect.	7 Y en tiempos de Artajerjes, Bislán, Mitrídates, Tabeel y otros colegas, le escribieron al mismo Artajerjes, rey de Persia. El texto del documento estaba redactado en arameo y traducido.
8 Then Rehum the governor and Shimshai the secretary wrote a letter to King Artaxerxes, denouncingJerusalem as fol ows:	8 El gobernador Rejúm y el secretario Simsai escribieron al rey Artajerjes una carta contra Jerusalén, en estos términos:
9 'From Rehum the governor and Shimshai the secretary and their other associates, the judges, thelegates, the Persian officials, the people of Uruk, Babylon and Susa -- that is, the Elamites-	9 «Rejúm, el gobernador, Simsai, el secretario, y sus demás colegas; los jueces y los legados, funcionarios persas; la gente de Uruc, de Babilonia y de Susa –es decir, los elamitas –
10 and the other peoples whom the great and il ustrious Ashurbanipal deported and settled in the towns ofSamaria and in the rest of Transeuphrates.'	10 y los demás pueblos que el gran Asurbanipal desterró y estableció en las ciudades de Samaría y en la región que está de este lado del Eufrates...»
11 This is the text of the letter which they sent him: 'To King Artaxerxes, from your servants the people ofTranseuphrates:	11 Y esta es la copia de la carta que le enviaron: «Al rey Artajerjes, tus servidores, los habitantes de este lado del Eufrates, etc.
12 'May the king now please be informed that the Jews, who have come up from you to us, have arrivedin Jerusalem and are rebuilding the rebel ious and evil city; they have begun rebuilding the wal s and are layingthe foundations;	12 El rey ha de saber que los judíos que estaban a tu lado y llegaron a Jerusalén están reconstruyendo esta ciudad rebelde y perversa: tratan de restaurar sus murallas y reparan sus cimientos.
13 and now the king should be informed that once this city is rebuilt and the wal s are restored, they wilrefuse to pay tribute, tax or toll, thus the king will incur a loss;	13 Sepa bien el rey que si se reconstruye esta ciudad y se levantan sus murallas, ya no se pagarán impuestos, contribuciones ni derechos de peaje, y que al fin de cuentas, esta ciudad perjudicará a los reyes.
14 and now, because we eat the palace salt, it is not proper for us to see this affront offered to the king;we therefore send this information to the king	14 Ahora bien, a nosotros que somos vasallos aliados de la casa real, nos resulta intolerable que se haga esta afrenta al rey. Por eso enviamos al rey estas informaciones,
15 so that a search may be made in the archives of your ancestors: in which archives you will find andlearn that this city is a rebellious city, the bane of kings and provinces, and that sedition has been stirred upthere from ancient times; that is why this city was destroyed.	15 a fin de que se investigue en los Anales de tus predecesores. En ellos comprobarás que esta es una ciudad rebelde, perjudicial para los reyes y las provincias; y que en ella se han fomentado insurrecciones desde los tiempos más remotos. Por ese motivo fue destruida.
16 We inform the king that if this city is rebuilt and its wal s are restored, you wil soon have no territoriesleft in Transeuphrates.'	16 Hacemos saber al rey que si se reconstruye esta ciudad y se restauran sus murallas, muy pronto ya no tendrás ninguna posesión de este lado del Eufrates».
17 The king sent this reply: 'To Rehum the governor, to Shimshai the secretary, and to their otherassociates resident in Samaria and elsewhere in Transeuphrates: Greetings!	17 El rey envió esta respuesta: «A Rejúm, gobernador, a Simsai, secretario, y a los demás colegas residentes en Samaría y en toda la región que está del otro lado del Eufrates, paz, etc.
18 'And now, the document which you sent us has been accurately translated for me,	18 El documento que ustedes nos enviaron ha sido leído en su traducción, delante de mí.
19 and by my orders search has been made, and it has been found that this city has rebel ed against thekings in the past and that revolt and sedition have been contrived in it;	19 Di orden de que se investigara, y se ha comprobado que esa ciudad se ha sublevado contra los reyes desde los tiempos más remotos y que en ella se han producido revueltas e insurrecciones.
20 and that powerful kings have reigned in Jerusalem, governing the whole of Transeuphrates andexacting tribute, tax and tol ;	20 Hubo en Jerusalén reyes poderosos que llegaron a dominar toda la región que está del otro lado del Eufrates, y a los cuales se pagaban impuestos, contribuciones y derechos de peaje.
21 now give orders for these men to cease work; this city is not to be rebuilt until I give the order.	21 Manden, por lo tanto, que se interrumpan los trabajos de esa gente y que esa ciudad no sea reconstruida hasta nueva orden.
22 Beware of acting negligently in this matter. Why should the harm grow, to endanger the king?'	22 Actúen diligentemente en este asunto, no sea que aumente el mal en perjuicio de los reyes».
23 As soon as the text of King Artaxerxes' document had been read to Rehum the governor, Shimshai thesecretary and their associates, they hurried to the Jews in Jerusalem and stopped their work by force of arms.	23 Apenas la copia del documento del rey Artajerjes fue leída delante del gobernador Rejúm, del secretario Simsai, y de sus colegas, ellos partieron rápidamente hacia Jerusalén, donde estaban los judíos, y por la fuerza de las armas, les obligaron a suspender los trabajos.
24 Work on the Temple of God in Jerusalem then ceased, and was discontinued until the second year ofthe reign of Darius King of Persia.	24 Así fueron interrumpidas las obras de la Casa de Dios en Jerusalén, y quedaron suspendidas hasta el segundo año del reinado de Darío, rey de Persia.
