1 After these loyal actions, Sennacherib king of Assyria advanced and invaded Judah, and laid siege tothe fortified towns, intending to demolish them.	1 Dopo queste, e simili opere di giustizia, Sennacherib re degli Assiri si mosse, ed entrato sulle terre di Giuda, assediò le città forti per espugnarle.
2 Hezekiah, realising that Sennacherib's advance was the preliminary to an attack on Jerusalem,	2 Lo che vedendo Ezechia, viene a dire, che Sennacherib si avvicinavo e che tutto l'impeto della guerra si rivolgeva contro Gerusalemme.
3 consulted his officers and warriors about sealing off the waters of the springs outside the city, and theysupported him.	3 Tenuto consiglio co' suoi' grandi, e cogli uomini più valorosi, ed essendo concorsi tutti nel parere di turare le sorgive della fontana, che eran fuori della città.
4 So a large number of people were cal ed out to block al the springs and cut off the watercourseflowing through the country. 'Why', they said, 'should the kings of Assyria find plenty of water when they arrive?'	4 Raunò grandissimo numero di gente, e turarono tutte le fontane e il ruscello, che scorreva per il territorio dicendo: Affinchè venendo i re degli Assiri non trovin copia di acque.
5 Acting with determination, he also repaired al the damaged parts of the wal , built towers on it,constructed a second wal on the outer side, strengthened the Mil o of the City of David and made quantities ofmissiles and shields.	5 Egli parimente usando ogni diligenza riparò tuttala muraglia, che era rovinata, e vi fabbricò sopra delle torri, e un altro muro al di fuori; e restaurò Mello nella città di David, e fece armi di ogni sorta, e scudi:
6 He then appointed generals to command the people, summoned them to him in the square by the citygate and spoke as fol ows to encourage them,	6 E nominò i comandanti dell'esercito, e gli adunò tutti quanti sulla piazza della porta della città, e parlò al loro cuore, dicendo:
7 'Be strong and brave; do not be afraid or tremble when you face the king of Assyria and the wholehorde he brings with him, for there are more on our side than on his.	7 Operate da forti, e fatevi animo: non temete, e non abbiate paura del re degli Assiri, né di tutta quella moltitudine, che vien con lui: perocché molti più sono dalla parte nostra, che dalla sua.
8 He has only human strength, but we have Yahweh our God to help us and fight our battles.' Thepeople took heart at the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.	8 Egli ha seco un braccio di carne: con noi sta il Signore Dio nostro, che è nostro aiuto, e combatte per noi. E il popolo a queste parole di Ezechia re di Giuda prese coraggio.
9 Next, Sennacherib king of Assyria, who was then besieging Lachish with all his forces, sent hisrepresentatives to Jerusalem, to Hezekiah king of Judah, and al Judah at Jerusalem, with the fol owingmessage,	9 Dopo che tali cose furon fatte, Sennacherib re degli Assiri (il quale con tutto il suo esercito assediava Lachis) spedì suoi messi ad Ezechia re di Giuda, e a tutto il popolo, che era nella città, i quali dissero:
10 'Sennacherib king of Assyria says this, "What gives you the confidence to remain in the fortress ofJerusalem?	10 Queste cose dice Sennacherib re degli Assiri: su quale speranza ve ne state voi chiusi in Gerusalemme?
11 Isn't Hezekiah deluding you, only to condemn you to die of famine and thirst, when he says: Yahwehour God wil save us from the King of Assyria's clutches?	11 V'inganna forse Ezechia per farvi morire di fame, e di sete, assicurandovi, che il Signore Dio vostri vi libererà dalle mani del re degli Assiri?
12 Isn't Hezekiah the very man who has suppressed his high places and altars, and given the order toJudah and to Jerusalem: You must worship before one altar and on that alone offer incense?	12 Non è egli queir Ezechia, che distrusse i suoi luoghi eccelsi, e gli altari, e intimò, e disse a quelli di Giuda, e di Gerusalemme: Dinanzi ad un solo altare adorerete, e sopra di questo brucerete l'incenso?
13 Don't you know what I and my ancestors have done to al the peoples of the other countries? Havethe national gods of those countries had the slightest success in saving their countries from my clutches?	13 Non sapete forse voi quello, che io, e i padri miei abbiam fatto a tutti i popoli della terra? Furon eglino da tanto gli dei delle genti, e di tutti i paesi, che potesser liberare dalle mie mani il loro paese?
14 Of al the gods of those nations whom my ancestors devoted to destruction, which one has been ableto save his people from my clutches, for your god to be able to save you from my clutches?	14 Qual è tragli dei tutti delle nazioni sterminate da' padri miei, che abbia potuto liberare il suo popolo dalle mie mani, onde possa anche sottrarvi a questa mia mano il Dio vostro?
15 Do not let Hezekiah mislead you. Do not let him delude you like this. Do not believe him, for no godof any nation or kingdom has been able to save his people from me or from my ancestors' clutches. No more wilyour god be able to save you from my clutches." '	15 Badate adunque, che Ezechia non vi seduca, o con vane lusinghe vi gabbi, e non gli credete. Perocché se verun dio di tutte le genti, e reami non potè salvare il suo popolo dalla mia mano, e dalle mani de' padri miei, per conseguenza nemmeno il Dio vostro dalla mia mano potrà salvarvi.
16 And his representatives said a great deal more, maligning Yahweh God, and his servant Hezekiah.	16 E molte altre cose dissero i servi di Sennacherib contro il Signore Dio,e in biasimo di Ezechia suo servo.
17 He also wrote a letter to insult Yahweh, God of Israel, maligning him as follows, 'Just as the nationalgods of the other countries could not save their peoples from my clutches, so Hezekiah's god cannot save hispeople from my clutches.'	17 Ed egli scrisse eziandio lettere piene di bestemmie contro il Signore Dio d'Israele, e disse di lui: Siccome gli dei delle altre genti non poteron liberare i popoli loro dalle mie mani; così il Dio di Ezechia non potrà salvare il suo popolo da questa mano.
18 They then shouted loudly in the Judaean language to the people of Jerusalem on the ramparts tofrighten and confuse them, in the hope of capturing the city,	18 É oltre a ciò ad altissima voce in lingua Ebrea sgridava il popolo, che stava sulle mura di Gerusalemme, per isbigottirlo, e così prendere la città.
19 maligning the God of Jerusalem as though he were one of the man-made gods of other peoples inthe world.	19 E parlava del Dio di Gerusalemme, come degli dei delle nazioni della terra, lavori di mano d'uomo.
20 Then King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz prayed and cried out to Heaven about this,	20 Fecer pertanto orazione Ezechia re, e Isaia figliuolo di Amos profeta contro questo bestemmiatore, e alzarono al cielo le loro voci.
21 and Yahweh sent an angel who destroyed every warrior, commander and officer in the king ofAssyria's camp. So he had to retire shamefacedly to his own country and when he went into the temple of hisgod, some of his own sons there struck him down with the sword.	21 E il Signore mandò un Angelo, il quale uccise tutti gli uomini forti, e valorosi, e il capo dell'esercito del re degli Assiri, il quale se ne tornò svergognato al suo paese. Ed essendo entrato nella casa del suo dio, i suoi proprj figliuoli lo ucciser di spada.
22 So Yahweh saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the clutches of Sennacherib kingof Assyria and of everyone else, and gave them peace on every side.	22 Così il Signore salvò Ezechia, egli abitanti di Gerusalemme dalle mani di Sennacherib re degli Assiri, e dalle mani di tutti gli altri, e diede loro la pace da tutte parti.
23 Many people then brought gifts to Yahweh in Jerusalem and valuable presents to Hezekiah king ofJudah; from then on, all the other nations held him in high esteem.	23 E molti eziandio portavan vittime,e offerivano sagrifizj al Signore in Gerusalemme, e doni ad Ezechia re di Giuda, il quale da indi in poi divenne famoso presso tutte le genti.
24 About then Hezekiah fel il and was at the point of death. He prayed to Yahweh, who heard him andgranted him a sign.	24 In quel tempo Ezechia si ammalò mortalmente, e fece orazione al Signore, il quale lo esaudì, e gliene diede un segno.
25 But Hezekiah made no return for the benefit which he had received; he became proud and broughtretribution on himself and on Judah and Jerusalem.	25 Ma egli non corrispose ai benefizj, che avea ricevuti, perchè il suo cuore si inalberò: e si accese l'ira contro di lui, e contro Giuda, e Gerusalemme.
26 Then, however, Hezekiah did humble himself in his pride, and so did the inhabitants of Jerusalem; asa result of which, Yahweh's retribution did not overtake them during Hezekiah's lifetime.	26 Ma dipoi si umiliò dell'essersi insuperbito in cuor suo tanto egli, come gli abitatori di Gerusalemme: e per questo l'ira del Signore non piombò sopra di loro, fino che visse Ezechia.
27 Hezekiah enjoyed immense riches and honour. He built himself treasuries for gold, silver, preciousstones, spices, jewels and every kind of desirable object,	27 Ed Ezechia fu ricco, e di gran nome, e si adunò girandi tesori di argento, e di oro, e di pietre preziose, e di aromi, e d'armi d'ogni genere, a di vasi di gran pregio:
28 as wel as storehouses for his returns of grain, new wine and olive oil, and stal s for al kinds of cattleand pens for the flocks.	28 E de' maggazzini di grano, e di vino, e di olio, e delle stalle di ogni specie giumenti, e ovili di pecore.
29 He also provided himself with donkeys in addition to his immense wealth of flocks and herds, sinceGod had made him immensely wealthy.	29 Ed egli edificò delle città: perocché aveva innumerabili greggi di pecore, perchè il Signore gli avea date stragrandi ricchezze.
30 It was Hezekiah who stopped the upper outlet of the waters of Gihon and directed them straightdown on the west side of the City of David. Hezekiah succeeded in al that he undertook,	30 Questi è quell'Ezechia, che turò la fontana superiore delle acque di Gihon, e le fece correre sotto terra verso ponente nella città di David. 33 Then Hezekiah fel asleep with his ancestors and was buried in the upper section of the tombs of thesons of David. Al Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem paid him honours at his death. His son Manassehsucceeded him.	33 Ed Ezechia si addormentò co' padri suoi, e fu sepolto sopra i sepolcri de' figliuoli di David: e tutto Giuda celebrò i suoi funerali con tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme: e Manasse suo figliuolo gli succedette nel regno.
