NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Now, Joab son of Zeruiah observed that the king was favourably inclined to Absalom.	1 Joab, fils de Ceruya, reconnut que le coeur du roi se tournait vers Absalom.
2 Joab therefore sent to Tekoa for a wise woman. 'Pretend to be in mourning,' he said. 'Dress yourself inmourning, do not perfume yourself; act like a woman who has long been mourning for the dead.	2 Alors Joab envoya chercher à Teqoa une femme avisée et lui dit: "Je t'en prie, feins d'être endeuil, mets des habits de deuil, ne te parfume pas, sois comme une femme qui, depuis bien des jours, porte ledeuil d'un mort.
3 Then go to the king and say this to him.' And Joab put the words into her mouth which she was to say.	3 Tu iras chez le roi et tu lui tiendras ce discours." Joab lui mit dans la bouche les paroles qu'ilfallait.
4 So the woman of Tekoa went to the king and, fal ing on her face to the ground, prostrated herself.'Help, my lord king!' she said.	4 La femme de Teqoa alla donc chez le roi, elle tomba la face contre terre et se prosterna, puis elledit: "Au secours, ô roi!"
5 The king said, 'What is the matter?' 'As you see,' she replied, 'I am a widow; my husband is dead.	5 Le roi lui demanda: "Qu'as-tu?" Elle répondit: "Hélas! je suis veuve. Mon mari est mort
6 Your servant had two sons and out in the fields, where there was no one to intervene, they had aquarrel. And one of them struck the other one and kil ed him.	6 et ta servante avait deux fils. Il se sont querellés ensemble dans la campagne, il n'y avaitpersonne pour les séparer, l'un a frappé l'autre et l'a tué.
7 And now the whole clan has risen against your servant. "Give up the man who kil ed his brother," theysay, "so that we can put him to death, to atone for the life of the brother whom he has murdered; and thus weshall destroy the heir as wel ." By this means, they wil extinguish the ember stil left to me, leaving my husbandneither name nor survivor on the face of the earth.'	7 Voilà que tout le clan s'est dressé contre ta servante et dit: Livre le fratricide: nous le mettrons àmort pour prix de la vie de son frère qu'il a tué, et nous détruirons en même temps l'héritier. Ils vont ainsiéteindre la braise qui me reste, pour ne plus laisser à mon mari ni nom ni survivant sur la face de la terre."
8 Then the king said to the woman, 'Go home; I myself shal give orders about your case.'	8 Le roi dit à la femme: "Va à ta maison, je donnerai moi-même des ordres à ton sujet."
9 The woman of Tekoa said to the king, 'My lord king! May the guilt be on me and on my family; the kingand his throne are innocent of it.'	9 La femme de Teqoa dit au roi: "Monseigneur le roi! Que la faute retombe sur moi et sur mafamille; le roi et son trône en sont innocents."
10 'Bring me the man who threatened you,' the king replied, 'and he shal never hurt you again.'	10 Le roi reprit: "Celui qui t'a menacée, amène-le moi et il ne reviendra plus te faire du mal."
11 She then said, 'Let the king be pleased to pronounce the name of Yahweh your God, so that theavenger of blood may not do greater harm and destroy my son.' 'As Yahweh lives,' he said, 'not one of yourson's hairs shal fal to the ground!'	11 Elle dit: "Que le roi daigne prononcer le nom de Yahvé ton Dieu, afin que le vengeur du sangn'augmente pas la ruine et ne fasse pas périr mon fils!" Il dit alors: "Aussi vrai que Yahvé est vivant, il netombera pas à terre un seul cheveu de ton fils!"
12 Then the woman said, 'Permit your servant to say something else to my lord the king.' 'Go on,' hesaid.	12 La femme reprit: "Qu'il soit permis à ta servante de dire un mot à Monseigneur le roi", et ilrépondit: "Parle."
13 The woman said, 'Why then has the king, who by giving this verdict has condemned himself,conceived the idea, against God's people's interests, of not bringing home the son whom he has banished?	13 La femme dit: "Et alors, pourquoi le roi -- en prononçant cette sentence, il se reconnaît coupable-- a-t-il eu contre le peuple de Dieu cette pensée de ne pas faire revenir celui qu'il a banni?
14 We are al mortal; we are like water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again, nor doesGod raise up a corpse; let the king therefore make plans for his banished son not to remain far away from him inexile.	14 Nous sommes mortels et comme les eaux qui s'écoulent à terre et qu'on ne peut recueillir, etDieu ne relève pas un cadavre: que le roi fasse donc des plans pour que le banni ne reste pas exilé loin de lui.
15 'Now, the reason why I came to speak about this to my lord the king is that I was being intimidated,and your servant thought, "I shal speak to the king; perhaps the king will do what his servant asks.	15 "Maintenant, si je suis venue parler de cette affaire à Monseigneur le roi, c'est que les gensm'ont fait peur et ta servante s'est dit: Je parlerai au roi et peut-être le roi exécutera-t-il la parole de sa servante.
16 Surely the king wil consent to save his servant from the clutches of the man who is trying to cut bothme and my son off from God's heritage.	16 Car le roi consentira à délivrer sa servante des mains de l'homme qui cherche à nous retrancher,moi et mon fils ensemble, de l'héritage de Dieu.
17 Let a word from my lord the king, restore the peace!" your servant thought, "for my lord the king islike the Angel of God in understanding good and evil." May Yahweh your God be with you!'	17 Ta servante a dit: Puisse la parole de Monseigneur le roi donner l'apaisement. Car Monseigneurle roi est comme l'Ange de Dieu pour saisir le bien et le mal. Que Yahvé ton Dieu soit avec toi!"
18 Replying to the woman, the king said, 'Now do not evade the question which I am going to ask you.'The woman said, 'Let my lord the king ask his question.'	18 Alors le roi, prenant la parole, dit à la femme: "Je t'en prie, ne te dérobe pas à la question que jevais te poser." La femme répondit: "Que Monseigneur le roi parle!"
19 'Is not Joab's hand behind you in all this?' the king asked. The woman replied, 'As you live, my lordking, I cannot escape what my lord the king says, either to right or to left. Yes, it was your servant Joab whogave me my orders; he put al these words into your servant's mouth.	19 Le roi demanda: "La main de Joab n'est-elle pas avec toi en tout cela?" La femme répliqua:"Aussi vrai que tu es vivant, Monseigneur le roi, on ne peut pas aller à droite ni à gauche de tout ce qu'a ditMonseigneur le roi: oui, c'est ton serviteur Joab qui m'a donné l'ordre, c'est lui qui a mis toutes ces paroles dansla bouche de ta servante.
20 Your servant Joab did this to approach the matter indirectly, but my lord has the wisdom of the Angelof God; he knows everything that happens on earth!'	20 C'est pour déguiser l'affaire que ton serviteur Joab a agi ainsi, mais Monseigneur a la sagesse del'Ange de Dieu, il sait tout ce qui se passe sur la terre."
21 The king then said to Joab, 'Very wel , the suit is granted. Go and bring the young man Absalomback.'	21 Le roi dit alors à Joab: "Eh bien, je fais la chose: Va, ramène le jeune homme Absalom."
22 Joab fell on his face to the ground, prostrated himself and blessed the king. 'My lord king,' Joab said,'today your servant knows that he has won your favour, since the king has done what his servant asked.'	22 Joab tomba la face contre terre, il se prosterna et bénit le roi. Puis Joab dit: "Ton serviteur saitaujourd'hui qu'il a trouvé grâce à tes yeux, Monseigneur le roi, puisque le roi a exécuté la parole de sonserviteur."
23 Joab then set off, went to Geshur, and brought Absalom back to Jerusalem.	23 Joab se mit en route, il alla à Geshur et ramena Absalom à Jérusalem.
24 The king, however, said, 'Let him retire to his own house; he is not to appear in my presence.' SoAbsalom retired to his own house and was not received by the king.	24 Cependant le roi dit: "Qu'il se retire dans sa maison, il ne sera pas reçu par moi." Absalom seretira dans sa maison et ne fut pas reçu par le roi.
25 In al Israel there was no one more praised for his beauty than Absalom; from the sole of his foot tothe crown of his head, he could not be faulted.	25 Dans tout Israël, il n'y avait personne d'aussi beau qu'Absalom, à qui on pût faire tant d'éloges:de la plante des pieds au sommet de la tête, il était sans défaut.
26 When he cut his hair -- he shaved it once a year because his hair got too heavy -- he would weighthe hair: two hundred shekels, king's weight.	26 Lorsqu'il se rasait la tête -- il se rasait chaque année parce que c'était trop lourd, alors il se rasait--, il pesait sa chevelure: soit 200 sicles, poids du roi.
27 To Absalom were born three sons and one daughter called Tamar; she was a beautiful woman.	27 Il naquit à Absalom trois fils et une fille, qui se nommait Tamar; c'était une belle femme.
28 Absalom lived in Jerusalem for two years without being received by the king.	28 Absalom demeura deux ans à Jérusalem, sans être reçu par le roi.
29 Absalom then summoned Joab, intending to send him to the king, but Joab would not come to him.He sent for him a second time, but still he would not come.	29 Absalom convoqua Joab pour l'envoyer chez le roi, mais Joab ne consentit pas à venir chez lui,il le convoqua encore une seconde fois, mais il ne consentit pas à venir.
30 At this, Absalom said to his retainers, 'Look, Joab's field is next to mine and he has barley in it; goand set it on fire.' Absalom's retainers set fire to the field.	30 Absalom dit à ses serviteurs: "Voyez le champ de Joab qui est à côté du mien et où il y a del'orge, allez-y mettre le feu." Les serviteurs d'Absalom mirent le feu au champ.
31 Joab then stirred himself, went to Absalom in his house and asked, 'Why have your retainers set myfield on fire?'	31 Joab vint trouver Absalom dans sa maison et lui dit: "Pourquoi tes serviteurs ont-il mis le feu auchamp qui m'appartient?"
32 Absalom replied to Joab, 'Look, I sent word to you: Come here, so that I can send you to the king tosay, "Why come back from Geshur? Better for me to have been there still!" Now I want to be received by theking, and if I am guilty, let him put me to death!'	32 Absalom répondit à Joab: "Voilà ce que je t'avais fait dire: Viens ici, je veux t'envoyer auprèsdu roi avec ce message: Pourquoi suis-je revenu de Geshur? Il vaudrait mieux pour moi y être encore. Je veuxmaintenant être reçu par le roi et, si je suis coupable, qu'il me mettre à mort!"
33 Joab went to the king and told him this. He then summoned Absalom, who prostrated himself with hisface to the ground before the king. And the king kissed Absalom.	33 Joab se rendit près du roi et lui rapporta ces paroles. Puis il appela Absalom. Celui-ci alla chezle roi, se prosterna devant lui et se jeta la face contre terre devant le roi. Et le roi embrassa Absalom.
