1 But Jacob settled in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.	1 Quant à Jacob, il demeura dans le pays où ses pères avaient séjourné, c’est-à-dire en Canaan.
2 This is the story of Joseph. Joseph was seventeen years old. As he was young, he was shepherdingthe flock with his brothers, with the sons of his father's wives, Bilhah and Zilpah; and Joseph brought his fatherbad reports about them.	2 Voici maintenant les origines du peuple de Jacob. En ce temps-là Joseph était un adolescent de 17 ans; comme il gardait le petit bétail avec ses frères, les fils de Bila et les fils de Zilpa, les femmes de son père, il pouvait rapporter à son père le mal que l’on disait d’eux.
3 Jacob loved Joseph more than al his other sons, for he was the son of his old age, and he had adecorated tunic made for him.	3 Israël préférait Joseph à tous ses autres fils, car il était le fils de sa vieillesse. Il lui avait même fait faire une tunique à manches.
4 But his brothers, seeing how much more his father loved him than all his other sons, came to hate himso much that they could not say a civil word to him.	4 Ses frères voyaient que leur père le préférait à tous les autres, aussi ils le détestèrent: ils ne pouvaient plus lui parler amicalement.
5 Now Joseph had a dream, and he repeated it to his brothers, who then hated him more than ever.	5 Joseph eut un rêve qu’il raconta à ses frères.
6 'Listen', he said, 'to the dream I had.	6 Il leur dit: “Écoutez le rêve que j’ai eu.
7 We were binding sheaves in the field, when my sheaf suddenly rose and stood upright, and then yoursheaves gathered round and bowed to my sheaf.'	7 Nous étions en train de ramasser les gerbes au milieu des champs, et voici que ma gerbe se dressa debout, toute droite, pendant que vos gerbes tout autour se prosternaient devant la mienne.”
8 'So you want to be king over us,' his brothers retorted, 'you want to lord it over us?' And they hatedhim even more, on account of his dreams and of what he said.	8 Ses frères lui répondirent: “Voudrais-tu par hasard régner sur nous, devenir notre roi et dominer sur nous?” Ils le détestèrent encore plus à cause de ses rêves et de ses interprétations.
9 He had another dream which he recounted to his brothers. 'Look, I have had another dream,' he said.'There were the sun, the moon and eleven stars, bowing down to me.'	9 Il eut un autre rêve qu’il raconta encore à ses frères: “J’ai eu un rêve, dit-il: le soleil, la lune et onze étoiles se prosternaient devant moi.”
10 He told his father and brothers, and his father scolded him. 'A fine dream to have!' he said to him.'Are all of us then, myself, your mother and your brothers, to come and bow to the ground before you?'	10 Mais son père le gronda: “Qu’as-tu donc rêvé là! Devrons-nous, moi, ta mère et tes frères, nous prosterner jusqu’à terre devant toi?”
11 His brothers held it against him, but his father pondered the matter.	11 Ses frères étaient jaloux de lui, mais son père n’oubliait rien de tout cela.
12 His brothers went to pasture their father's flock at Shechem.	12 Comme ses frères étaient allés faire paître le troupeau de leur père à Sichem,
13 Then Israel said to Joseph, 'Your brothers are with the flock at Shechem, aren't they? Come, I amgoing to send you to them.' 'I am ready,' he replied.	13 Israël dit à Joseph: “Tes frères sont partis vers Sichem pour faire paître le troupeau, il faut que je t’envoie vers eux.” Il répondit: “Me voici!”
14 He said to him, 'Go and see how your brothers and the flock are doing, and bring me word.' He senthim from the val ey of Hebron, and Joseph arrived at Shechem.	14 Son père lui dit: “Va voir comment se portent tes frères et le troupeau: tu me rapporteras les nouvelles.” Il l’envoya donc de la vallée d’Hébron et Joseph arriva à Sichem.
15 A man found him wandering in the countryside and asked him, 'What are you looking for ? '	15 Un homme le rencontra alors qu’il errait dans la campagne et lui demanda: “Que cherches-tu?”
16 'I am looking for my brothers,' he replied. 'Please tel me where they are pasturing their flock.'	16 Joseph répondit: “Je cherche mes frères, peux-tu me dire où ils font paître le troupeau?”
17 The man answered, 'They have moved on from here; indeed I heard them say, "Let us go toDothan." ' So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.	17 L’homme répondit: “Ils sont partis d’ici, et je les ai entendus qui disaient: Allons à Dotan.” Joseph alla donc à la recherche de ses frères et les retrouva à Dotan.
18 They saw him in the distance, and before he reached them they made a plot to kil him.	18 Ils l’aperçurent de loin et, avant qu’il n’approche, ils complotèrent contre lui pour le faire mourir.
19 'Here comes that dreamer,' they said to one another.	19 Ils se disaient entre eux: “Voici qu’arrive notre maître en songes!
20 'Come on, let us kil him now and throw him down one of the storage-wells; we can say that somewild animal has devoured him. Then we shal see what becomes of his dreams.'	20 C’est le moment, tuons-le, jetons-le dans une citerne quelconque et nous dirons qu’une bête sauvage l’a dévoré. Nous verrons bien alors à quoi riment ses songes.”
21 But Reuben heard, and he saved him from their clutches. 'We must not take his life,' he said.	21 En entendant cela, Ruben voulut le sauver de leurs mains: “Ne le frappons pas à mort,” dit-il.
22 'Shed no blood,' said Reuben to them, 'throw him down that wel out in the desert, but do not kil himyourselves' -- intending to save him from them and to restore him to his father.	22 Ruben ajouta: “Ne répandez pas le sang, jetez-le donc dans cette citerne du désert, mais ne portez pas la main sur lui!” Il disait cela pour le sauver de leurs mains, pour le renvoyer à son père.
23 So, when Joseph reached his brothers, they pul ed off his tunic, the decorated tunic which he waswearing,	23 Dès que Joseph arriva auprès de ses frères, ils lui arrachèrent la tunique à manches qu’il portait.
24 and catching hold of him, threw him into the wel . The wel was empty, with no water in it.	24 Puis ils le prirent et le jetèrent dans la citerne. La citerne était vide: il n’y avait plus d’eau dedans.
25 They then sat down to eat. Looking up, they saw a group of Ishmaelites who were coming fromGilead, their camels laden with gum tragacanth, balsam and resin, which they were taking to Egypt.	25 Ils s’étaient assis pour prendre leur repas quand, levant les yeux, ils aperçurent une caravane d’Ismaélites qui arrivait de Galaad. Leurs chameaux étaient chargés de résine et de parfums précieux qu’ils transportaient en Égypte.
26 Then Judah said to his brothers, 'What do we gain by killing our brother and covering up his blood?	26 Alors Juda dit à ses frères: “Que gagnerons-nous à tuer notre frère et à cacher son sang?
27 Come, let us sel him to the Ishmaelites, then we shal not have laid hands on him ourselves. Afteral , he is our brother, and our own flesh.' His brothers agreed.	27 Vendons-le aux Ismaélites plutôt que de le tuer, car il est notre frère!” Ses frères l’écoutèrent.
28 Now some Midianite merchants were passing, and they pul ed Joseph out of the wel . They soldJoseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver, and these men took Joseph to Egypt.	28 Des marchands de Madian passaient par là. Ses frères retirèrent Joseph, le firent remonter de la citerne et le vendirent aux Ismaélites pour vingt pièces d’argent. Ceux-ci emmenèrent Joseph en Égypte.
29 When Reuben went back to the wel , there was no sign of Joseph. Tearing his clothes,	29 Lorsque Ruben revint à la citerne, Joseph n’y était plus: il en déchira ses vêtements!
30 he went back to his brothers. 'The boy has gone,' he said. 'What am I going to do?'	30 Puis il revint dire à ses frères: “Le garçon n’est plus là, que vais-je devenir?”
31 They took Joseph's tunic and, slaughtering a goat, dipped the tunic in the blood.	31 Ils prirent alors la tunique de Joseph, égorgèrent un bouc et plongèrent la tunique dans son sang.
32 Then they sent off the decorated tunic and had it taken to their father, with the message, 'This iswhat we have found. Do you recognise it as your son's tunic or not?'	32 Puis ils envoyèrent la tunique à manches et la firent parvenir à leur père en disant: “Voici ce que nous avons trouvé. Regarde! N’est-ce pas la tunique de ton fils?”
33 He recognised it and cried, 'My son's tunic! A wild animal has devoured him! Joseph has been torn topieces!'	33 Jacob la reconnut: “C’est la tunique de mon fils, dit-il, une bête féroce l’aura dévoré, Joseph a été mis en pièces!”
34 Tearing his clothes and putting sackcloth round his waist, Jacob mourned his son for many days.	34 Jacob déchira ses vêtements, il s’habilla d’un sac et fit le deuil de son fils durant de longs jours.
35 Al his sons and daughters tried to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. 'No,' he said, 'I wilgo down to Sheol in mourning and join my son.' Thus his father wept for him.	35 Tous ses fils et toutes ses filles venaient pour le consoler, mais il refusait de se consoler, car il disait: “Je garderai le deuil jusqu’à ce que j’aille rejoindre mon fils au séjour des morts.” Et son père le pleura.
36 Meanwhile the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's officials andcommander of the guard.	36 Quant aux Madianites, ils vendirent Joseph en Égypte à Putifar, un fonctionnaire chef des gardes dans le palais du Pharaon.
