Genesis 24

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA VOLGARE
1 By now Abraham was an old man, well on in years, and Yahweh had blessed Abraham in every way.	1 Ed era in verità Abraam vecchio e di molti dì; e lo Signore in ogni cosa l'avea benedetto.
2 Abraham said to the senior servant in his household, the steward of al his property, 'Place your handunder my thigh:	2 (E prima che morisse, sì pensò dar mogliere ad Isaac) e disse al servo suo più vecchio della casa sua ( ch' avea nome Eliezer), il qual era sopra tutti quelli ch' egli avea: poni la mano tua sotto lo fianco mio.
3 I am going to make you swear by Yahweh, God of heaven and God of earth, that you wil not choosea wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I live	3 Ed iscongiùroti per lo Signore Iddio del cielo e della terra, che tu non die moglie al fanciullo mio delle figliuole de'Cananei, tra i quali io abito.
4 but wil go to my native land and my own kinsfolk to choose a wife for my son Isaac.'	4 Ma alla terra e al parentado mio va; e quindi darai moglie al mio figliuolo Isaac.
5 The servant asked him, 'What if the girl does not want to fol ow me to this country? Should I then takeyour son back to the country from which you come?'	5 Rispose lo servo: se gli non vorrà la femina venire meco in questa terra, ove debbo io reducere lo figliuolo tuo? al luogo donde tu venisti?
6 Abraham replied, 'On no account are you to take my son back there.	6 Disse Abraam: guàrdati che tu non reduchi lo figliuolo mio colà.
7 Yahweh, God of heaven and God of earth, who took me from my father's home, and from the land ofmy kinsfolk, and who promised me on oath, "I shal give this country to your descendants"-he will now send hisangel ahead of you, so that you can get a wife for my son from there.	7 Lo Signore Iddio del cielo, il quale menò me della casa del padre mio e della terra della natività mia, il quale mi favellò e giuroe, dicendo: al seme tuo io darò questa terra, egli manderà l'angelo suo innanzi a te, e torra'ne quindi la moglie allo figliuolo mio.
8 If then the girl refuses to follow you, you will be quit of this oath to me. Only do not take my son backthere.'	8 E se la femina non ti vorrà seguitare, non sarai tenuto al giuramento; ma il figliuolo mio non riducerai colà.
9 And the servant placed his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham, and swore to him that hewould do it.	9 E pose adunque lo servo la mano sopra lo fianco di Abraam suo signore, e giuroe a lui sopra questa parola.
10 The servant took ten of his master's camels and, carrying all kinds of gifts from his master, set out forthe city of Nahor in Aram Naharaim.	10 E tolse X cammelli della greggia del signor suo, e andossene portando seco d'ogni suo bene; e partitosi, andò in Mesopotamia alla città di Nacor.
11 In the evening, at the time when women come out to draw water, he made the camels kneel outsidethe town near the wel .	11 E conciosia cosa che facesse giacere nel vespro li cammelli fuori dell' oppido, appresso uno pozzo d'acqua, in quello tempo che sogliono andare le femine ad attingere dell' acqua, disse:
12 And he said, 'Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, give me success today and show faithful love tomy master Abraham.	12 O Signore Iddio del signore mio Abraam, corri oggi, io ti priego, a me; e fà la misericordia col signore mio Abraam.
13 While I stand by the spring as the young women from the town come out to draw water,	13 Ecco ch' io sto presso alla fonte dell' acqua; e le figliuole degli abitatori di questa città verranno ad attingere dell' acqua.
14 I shal say to one of the girls, "Please lower your pitcher and let me drink." And if she answers,"Drink, and I shal water your camels too," let her be the one you have decreed for your servant Isaac; by this Ishall know you have shown faithful love to my master.'	14 Adunque la fanciulla, a cui io dirò: inchina la secchia tua acciò ch' io bea, ed ella dirae: bei, darò anche a bere alli tuoi cammelli, quella è colei che tu apparecchiasti al servo tuo Isaac; e per questa cosa intenderò che tu averai fatta la misericordia col signore mio.
15 He had not finished speaking when out came Rebekah -- who was the daughter of Bethuel son ofMilcah, the wife of Abraham's brother Nahor -- with a pitcher on her shoulder.	15 Nè ancora intra sè le parole avea compiute, ed ecco Rebecca figliuola di Batuel, figliuolo di Melca moglie di Nacor fratello di Abraam, venia; la qual portava una idria sopra la spalla sua.
16 The girl was very beautiful, and a virgin; no man had touched her. She went down to the spring, fil edher pitcher and came up again.	16 La fanciulla molto bella e vergine e non conosciuta da uomo in verità era discesa alla fonte, ed avea empiuta la secchia, e ritornava.
17 Running towards her, the servant said, 'Please give me a sip of water from your pitcher.'	17 E corsele il servo incontra, e dissele: dàmmi uno poco d'acqua, di quella che è nella secchia tua, per bere.
18 She replied, 'Drink, my lord,' and quickly lowered her pitcher on her arm and gave him a drink.	18 La quale rispuose a lui: [bevi] mio signore; e allegramente puose la secchia sopra la coscia sua, e dièdegli a bere.
19 When she had finished letting him drink, she said, 'I shall draw water for your camels, too, until theyhave had enough.'	19 E quando quegli ebbe bevuto, disse: in verità ed a' cammelli tuoi attingerò dell' acqua, insino a tanto che tutti beano.
20 She quickly emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran to the wel again to draw, and drew for althe camels.	20 E spargente la secchia ne'canali, ricorse al pozzo acciò ch' ella attignesse dell' acqua; e a tutti i camelli ne diede.
21 Al the while, the man stood watching her, not daring to speak, wondering whether Yahweh hadmade his journey successful or not.	21 Ed egli in verità contemplava lei tacitamente, volendo sapere se prospero avesse fatto lo cammin suo lo Signore, o no.
22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took a gold ring weighing half a shekel, and put itthrough her nose, and put two bracelets weighing ten gold shekels on her arms,	22 Poscia adunque che i cammelli aveano bevuto, proferse l'uomo nelle orecchie le cose d'oro, [di peso di ] due sicli, ed altrettante armille di peso di X sicli.
23 and said, 'Whose daughter are you? Please tel me. Is there room at your father's house for us tospend the night?'	23 E disse a lei: di cui figliuola se' tu? dillomi; ed è nella casa del padre tuo luogo di starvi?
24 She replied, 'I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son whom Milcah bore to Nahor.'	24 La quale rispose: figliuola di Batuel sono, figliuolo di Melca, il quale partorì lui a Nacor.
25 And she went on, 'We have plenty of straw and fodder, and room to spend the night.'	25 E aggiunse dicendo: di paglia e di fieno molto ne abbiamo, ed è luogo spazioso di starvi.
26 Then the man bowed down and worshipped Yahweh	26 Inchinossi l'uomo, e adorò lo Signore,
27 saying, 'Blessed be Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, for not withholding his faithful love frommy master. Yahweh has led me straight to the house of my master's brother.'	27 dicendo: benedetto sia lo Signore Iddio del signore mio Abraam, il quale non tolse la misericordia e la verità sua del signore mio, il quale per la retta strada mi ha condotto a casa del fratello del mio signore.
28 The girl ran to her mother's house to tel what had happened.	28 E corse adunque la fanciulla, e nunciò nella casa della madre sua ogni cosa che avea veduto.
29 Now Rebekah had a brother cal ed Laban, and Laban ran out to the man at the spring.	29 Ed avea Rebecca uno fratello; lo nome suo Laban; il quale tosto è venuto a quell'uomo, ov'era la fonte.
30 As soon as he had seen the ring and the bracelets his sister was wearing, and had heard his sisterRebekah saying, 'This is what the man said to me,' he went to the man and found him stil standing by hiscamels at the spring.	30 E conciosia cosa che vedesse nelli orecchii e l'armille nelle mani della sorella sua, ed avesse udite tutte le parole della rapportante: queste cose favelló a me l'uomo, e'venne all'uomo il quale stava appresso de' cammelli, e appresso della fonte dell' acqua,
31 He said to him, 'Come in, blessed of Yahweh, why stay out here when I have cleared the house andmade room for the camels?'	31 e disse a lui: vieni dentro, benedetto mio signore; perchè stai fuori? ed io apparecchiai la casa ed il luogo ai cammelli.
32 The man went to the house, and Laban unloaded the camels. He provided straw and fodder for thecamels and water for him and his companions to wash their feet.	32 E sì lo introdusse in casa, e sì discargò i cammelli, e diede loro paglia e fieno, ed acqua a lavare i piedi de'cammelli e degli uomini ch' erano venuti con lui.
33 They offered him food, but he said, 'I wil eat nothing before I have said what I have to say.' Labansaid, 'Speak.'	33 E puose dinanzi al cospetto suo il pane; il quale disse: io non manicherò, insino a tanto ch' io averò favellato queste parole. Respuose a lui: favella.
34 He said, 'I am Abraham's servant.	34 E quello disse: servo d'Abraam sono.
35 Yahweh has loaded my master with blessings, and Abraham is now very rich. He has given himflocks and herds, silver and gold, men and women slaves, camels and donkeys.	35 E lo Signore benedisse lo signore mio molto, e magnificò, e diede a lui pecore, buoi, ariento ed oro, servi ed ancille, cammelli ed asini.
36 Sarah, my master's wife, bore my master a son in his old age, and he has made over al his propertyto him.	36 E parturie Sara, moglie del signore mio, figliuolo al signore mio nella vecchiezza sua; e diede a lui ogni cosa ch' avea.
37 My master made me take this oath, "You are not to choose a wife for my son from the daughters ofthe Canaanites in whose country I live.	37 E lo signore mio scongiurommi, dicendo: non darai moglie allo figliuolo mio delle figliuole de'Cananei, nella terra in la quale io abito.
38 Instead, you are to go to my father's home and to my own kinsfolk to choose a wife for my son."	38 Ma alla casa del padre mio anderai; e del parentado mio darai moglie al figliuolo mio.
39 I said to my master, "Suppose the girl wil not agree to come with me?"	39 Io però respuosi al signore mio: or se non vorrà la femina venire meco?
40 and his reply was, "Yahweh, in whose presence I have walked, will send his angel with you andmake your journey successful, for you to choose a wife for my son from my own kinsfolk, from my father's house.	40 Ed il Signore, disse, nel cospetto del quale io vo, manderà l'angelo suo teco a dirizzare la via tua; e darai moglie allo figliuolo mio del parentado mio e della casa del padre mio.
41 Then you wil be quit of my curse: if you go to my family and they refuse you, you will be quit of mycurse."	41 Innocente sarai dalla maledizione mia, quando sarai venuto ai parenti miei, e non te la daranno.
42 Arriving today at the spring I said, "Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, please grant a successfuloutcome to the course I propose to take.	42 Io venni adunque oggi alla fonte dell' acqua, e dissi: Signore Iddio del signore mio Abraam, se tu dirizzasti aguale la via nella quale io vo,
43 While I stand by the spring, if a girl comes out to draw water and I say to her, 'Please give me a littlewater to drink from your pitcher,'	43 ecco io sto appresso alla fonte dell' acqua; e la vergine che verrà attingere dell' acqua udirà da me: dammi uno poco d'acqua da bere della secchia tua;
44 if she replies, 'Drink by all means, and I shall draw water for your camels too,' let her be the girlwhom Yahweh has decreed for my master's son."	44 e dirà a me: tu bei, e a'cammelli tuoi attignerò; ella è quella femina, la quale apparecchiò lo Signore allo figliuolo del signore mio.
45 I was stil saying this in my mind when Rebekah came out, her pitcher on her shoulder. She camedown to the spring and drew water. I said to her, "Please give me a drink."	45 E intanto ch' io queste cose meco tacita mente ragionassi, appare Rebecca, vegnente colla secchia ch' ella portava in su l'omero suo; e venne alla fonte, e attinse dell' acqua; ed io dissi a lei: dammi uno poco a bere.
46 Quickly she lowered her pitcher saying, "Drink, and I shal water your camels too."	46 Affrettantesi, dispuose la secchia dell' omero, e disse a me: e tu bei, e a' cammelli tuoi darò bere. Io bevvi, e acquai li cammelli.
47 I asked her, "Whose daughter are you?" She replied, "I am the daughter of Bethuel, whom Milcahbore to Nahor." Then I put this ring through her nose and these bracelets on her arms.	47 E domandai lei, e dissi: di cui figliuola se tu? La quale respuose: figliuola di Batuel sono, figliuolo di Naccor, il quale gli partorì Melca. Adunque io puosi nelle orecchie ad ornare la faccia sua, e le armille puosi nelle mani sue.
48 I bowed down and worshipped Yahweh, and I blessed Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, whohad led me by a direct path to choose the daughter of my master's brother for his son.	48 Ed inchinevole adorai lo Signore, benedicente lo Signore Iddio del signore mio Abraam, il quale meno me con diritto andamento, acciò ch' io dèssi la figliuola del fratello del signore mio al figliuolo suo.
49 Now tel me whether you are prepared to show constant and faithful love to my master; if not, say so,and I shall know what to do.'	49 [Per] la quale cosa, se voi farete la misericordia e la verità col signore mio, ditelo a me. E se altro vi piace, e questo mi dite, acciò ch' io vada dalla mano diritta, ovvero dalla manca.
50 Laban and Bethuel replied, 'This is from Yahweh; it is not for us to say yes or no to you.	50 Rispuose Laban e Batuel: dal Signore è venuta questa parola, e non possiamo, fuori del piacere suo, alcuna cosa altra favellare teco.
51 Rebekah is there before you. Take her and go; and let her become the wife of your master's son, asYahweh has decreed.'	51 In verità Rebecca innanzi a te è; e tolli lei, e va, e mènalane, e sia moglie del figliuolo del Signore tuo, siccome hae detto lo Signore (tuo).
52 On hearing this, Abraham's servant bowed to the ground before Yahweh.	52 La quale cosa quando l'udie lo servo di Abraam, adorò nella terra lo Signore.
53 He brought out silver and gold ornaments and clothes which he gave to Rebekah; he also gave richpresents to her brother and to her mother.	53 E tolti i vasi dell' ariento ed oro e vestimenta, dièdele a Rebecca in dono; e a' fratelli suoi e alla madre donò doni.
54 They ate and drank, he and his companions, and spent the night there. Next morning when theywere up, he said, 'Let me go back to my master.'	54 E incominciato lo convito, mangiando e bevendo istettero qui. E levantesi la mattina, favel loe lo servo: lasciatemi, acciò ch' io vada allo Signore mio.
55 Rebekah's brother and mother replied, 'Let the girl stay with us for ten days or so; then she can go.'	55 Rispuose li fratelli suoi e la madre: fa che stieci la fanciulla almeno X die appresso di noi, e poscia se ne venga.
56 But he replied, 'Do not delay me, since Yahweh has made my journey successful; let me leave andgo back to my master.'	56 Ed egli disse: non mi vogliate ritenere impercio che il Signore Iddio dirizzò la via mia; lasciatemi, acciò ch' io vada al signore mio Abraam.
57 They replied, 'Let us cal the girl and find out what she has to say.'	57 Ed egli dissero: chiamiamo la fanciulla, sappiamo la volontà sua.
58 They cal ed Rebekah and asked her, 'Wil you go with this man?' She replied, 'I will.'	58 E conciosiacosa ch' ella chiamata venisse, la domandarono: vòi tu andare con questo uomo? La quale disse: io anderò.
59 Accordingly they let their sister Rebekah go, with her nurse, and Abraham's servant and his men.	59 Lasciarono adunque lei e la balia sua e lo servo d'Abraam e le compagne della sorella loro,
60 They blessed Rebekah and said to her: Sister of ours, from you may there spring thousands andtens of thousands! May your descendants gain possession of the gates of their enemies!	60 dicendo: nostra sirocchia se ', cresci in mille migliaia, e possegga lo seme tuo le porte de nemici suoi.
61 And forthwith, Rebekah and her maids mounted the camels, and fol owed the man. The servant tookRebekah and departed.	61 Adunque Rebecca e le fanciulle sue, ascesi i cammelli, seguitarono il servo; il quale, affrettan dosi, ritornava al signore suo.
62 Isaac meanwhile had come back from the wel of Lahai Roi and was living in the Negeb.	62 In quello medesimo tempo Isaac andava per la via, la qual indrizza al pozzo, del quale il nome è DEL VIVENTE E DEL VEDENTE; e abitava nella terra australe.
63 While Isaac was out walking towards evening in the fields, he looked up and saw camelsapproaching.	63 Ed era venuto a meditare nel campo, inchi nato già lo dì; e conciosia cosa che levasse gli occhi, vidde gli cammelli vegnenti dalla lunga.
64 And Rebekah looked up and saw Isaac. She jumped down from her camel,	64 In verità Rebecca, riguardato Isaac, discese del cammello.
65 and asked the servant, 'Who is that man walking through the fields towards us?' The servant replied,'That is my master.' So she took her veil and covered herself up.	65 E disse al servo: chi è quello uomo che viene per lo campo incontro a noi? Ed egli disse: egli è lo signore mio. Ed ella, togliendo tosto uno panno, si coperse.
66 The servant told Isaac the whole story.	66 E lo servo ogni cosa, ch' ella avea fatto, si disse ad Isaac.
67 Then Isaac took her into his tent. He married Rebekah and made her his wife. And in his love for her,Isaac was consoled for the loss of his mother.	67 Il quale menò lei nel tabernacolo di Sara sua madre, e tòlsela per moglie; e tanto amoe lei, che il dolore della madre, che gli era venuto, temperò.
