Genesis 24

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 By now Abraham was an old man, well on in years, and Yahweh had blessed Abraham in every way.	1 Abraham ya era un anciano de edad avanzada, y el Señor lo había bendecido en todo.
2 Abraham said to the senior servant in his household, the steward of al his property, 'Place your handunder my thigh:	2 Entonces dijo al servidor más antiguo de su casa, el que le administraba todos los bienes: «Coloca tu mano debajo de mi muslo,
3 I am going to make you swear by Yahweh, God of heaven and God of earth, that you wil not choosea wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I live	3 y júrame por el Señor, Dios del Cielo y de la tierra, que no buscarás una esposa para mi hijo entre las hijas de los cananeos, con los que estoy viviendo,
4 but wil go to my native land and my own kinsfolk to choose a wife for my son Isaac.'	4 sino que irás a mi país natal, y de allí traerás una esposa para Isaac».
5 The servant asked him, 'What if the girl does not want to fol ow me to this country? Should I then takeyour son back to the country from which you come?'	5 El servidor le dijo: «Si la mujer no quiere venir conmigo a esta tierra, ¿debo hacer que tu hijo regrese al país de donde saliste?».
6 Abraham replied, 'On no account are you to take my son back there.	6 «Cuídate muy bien de llevar allí a mi hijo», replicó Abraham.
7 Yahweh, God of heaven and God of earth, who took me from my father's home, and from the land ofmy kinsfolk, and who promised me on oath, "I shal give this country to your descendants"-he will now send hisangel ahead of you, so that you can get a wife for my son from there.	7 «El Señor, Dios del cielo, que me sacó de mi casa paterna y de mi país natal, y me prometió solemnemente dar esta tierra a mis descendientes, enviará su Angel delante de ti, a fin de que puedas traer de allí una esposa para mi hijo.
8 If then the girl refuses to follow you, you will be quit of this oath to me. Only do not take my son backthere.'	8 Si la mujer no quiere seguirte, quedarás libre del juramento que me haces; pero no lleves allí a mi hijo».
9 And the servant placed his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham, and swore to him that hewould do it.	9 El servidor puso su mano debajo del muslo de Abraham, su señor, y le prestó juramento respecto de lo que habían hablado.
10 The servant took ten of his master's camels and, carrying all kinds of gifts from his master, set out forthe city of Nahor in Aram Naharaim.	10 Luego tomó diez de los camellos de su señor, y llevando consigo toda clase de regalos, partió hacia Aram Naharaim, hacia la ciudad de Najor.
11 In the evening, at the time when women come out to draw water, he made the camels kneel outsidethe town near the wel .	11 Allí hizo arrodillar a los camellos junto a la fuente, en las afueras de la ciudad. Era el atardecer, la hora en que las mujeres salen a buscar agua.
12 And he said, 'Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, give me success today and show faithful love tomy master Abraham.	12 Entonces dijo: «Señor, Dios de Abraham, dame hoy una señal favorable, y muéstrate bondadoso con mi patrón Abraham.
13 While I stand by the spring as the young women from the town come out to draw water,	13 Yo me quedaré parado junto a la fuente, mientras las hijas de los pobladores de la ciudad vienen a sacar agua.
14 I shal say to one of the girls, "Please lower your pitcher and let me drink." And if she answers,"Drink, and I shal water your camels too," let her be the one you have decreed for your servant Isaac; by this Ishall know you have shown faithful love to my master.'	14 La joven a la que yo diga: «Por favor, inclina tu cántaro para que pueda beber», y que me responda: «Toma, y también daré de beber a tus camellos», esa será la mujer que has destinado para tu servidor Isaac. Así reconoceré que has sido bondadoso con mi patrón».
15 He had not finished speaking when out came Rebekah -- who was the daughter of Bethuel son ofMilcah, the wife of Abraham's brother Nahor -- with a pitcher on her shoulder.	15 Aún no había terminado de hablar, cuando Rebeca, la hija de Betuel –el cual era a su vez hijo de Milcá, la esposa de Najor, el hermano de Abraham– apareció con un cántaro sobre el hombro.
16 The girl was very beautiful, and a virgin; no man had touched her. She went down to the spring, fil edher pitcher and came up again.	16 Era una joven virgen, de aspecto muy hermoso, que nunca había tenido relaciones con ningún hombre. Ella bajó a la fuente, llenó su cántaro, y cuando se disponía a regresar,
17 Running towards her, the servant said, 'Please give me a sip of water from your pitcher.'	17 el servidor corrió a su encuentro y le dijo: «Por favor, dame un trago de esa agua que llevas en el cántaro».
18 She replied, 'Drink, my lord,' and quickly lowered her pitcher on her arm and gave him a drink.	18 «Bebe, señor», respondió ella, y bajando el cántaro de su hombro, se apresuró a darle de beber.
19 When she had finished letting him drink, she said, 'I shall draw water for your camels, too, until theyhave had enough.'	19 Después que lo dejó beber hasta saciarse, añadió: «También sacaré agua hasta que tus camellos se sacien de beber».
20 She quickly emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran to the wel again to draw, and drew for althe camels.	20 En seguida vació su cántaro en el bebedero, y fue corriendo de nuevo a la fuente, hasta que sacó agua para todos los camellos.
21 Al the while, the man stood watching her, not daring to speak, wondering whether Yahweh hadmade his journey successful or not.	21 Mientras tanto, el hombre la contemplaba en silencio, deseoso de saber si el Señor le permitiría lograr su cometido o no.
22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took a gold ring weighing half a shekel, and put itthrough her nose, and put two bracelets weighing ten gold shekels on her arms,	22 Cuando los camellos terminaron de beber, el hombre tomó un anillo de oro que pesaba medio siclo, y lo colocó en la nariz de la joven; luego le puso en los brazos dos pulseras de diez siclos.
23 and said, 'Whose daughter are you? Please tel me. Is there room at your father's house for us tospend the night?'	23 Después le preguntó: «¿De quién eres hija? ¿Y hay lugar en la casa de tu padre para que podamos pasar la noche?».
24 She replied, 'I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son whom Milcah bore to Nahor.'	24 Ella respondió: «Soy la hija de Betuel, el hijo que Milcá dio a Najor».
25 And she went on, 'We have plenty of straw and fodder, and room to spend the night.'	25 Y añadió: «En nuestra casa hay paja y forraje en abundancia, y también hay sitio para pasar la noche».
26 Then the man bowed down and worshipped Yahweh	26 El hombre se inclinó y adoró al Señor,
27 saying, 'Blessed be Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, for not withholding his faithful love frommy master. Yahweh has led me straight to the house of my master's brother.'	27 diciendo: «Bendito sea el Señor, Dios de mi patrón Abraham, que nunca dejó de manifestarle su amor y su fidelidad. El ha guiado mis pasos hasta la casa de sus parientes».
28 The girl ran to her mother's house to tel what had happened.	28 Entretanto, la joven corrió a llevar la noticia a la casa de su madre.
29 Now Rebekah had a brother cal ed Laban, and Laban ran out to the man at the spring.	29 Rebeca tenía un hermano llamado Labán.
30 As soon as he had seen the ring and the bracelets his sister was wearing, and had heard his sisterRebekah saying, 'This is what the man said to me,' he went to the man and found him stil standing by hiscamels at the spring.	30 Este, apenas vio el anillo y las pulseras que traía su hermana, y le oyó contar todo lo que el hombre le había dicho, salió rápidamente y se dirigió hacia la fuente en busca de él. Al llegar, lo encontró con sus camellos junto a la fuente.
31 He said to him, 'Come in, blessed of Yahweh, why stay out here when I have cleared the house andmade room for the camels?'	31 Entonces le dijo: «¡Ven, bendito del Señor! ¿Por qué te quedas afuera, si yo he preparado mi casa y tengo lugar para los camellos?».
32 The man went to the house, and Laban unloaded the camels. He provided straw and fodder for thecamels and water for him and his companions to wash their feet.	32 El hombre entró en la casa. En seguida desensillaron los camellos, les dieron agua y forraje, y trajeron agua para que él y sus acompañantes se lavaran los pies.
33 They offered him food, but he said, 'I wil eat nothing before I have said what I have to say.' Labansaid, 'Speak.'	33 Pero cuando le sirvieron de comer, el hombre dijo: «No voy a comer, si antes no expongo el asunto que traigo entre manos». «Habla», le respondió Labán.
34 He said, 'I am Abraham's servant.	34 El continuó: «Yo soy servidor de Abraham.
35 Yahweh has loaded my master with blessings, and Abraham is now very rich. He has given himflocks and herds, silver and gold, men and women slaves, camels and donkeys.	35 El Señor colmó de bendiciones a mi patrón y lo hizo prosperar, dándole ovejas y vacas, plata y oro, esclavos y esclavas, camellos y asnos.
36 Sarah, my master's wife, bore my master a son in his old age, and he has made over al his propertyto him.	36 Y su esposa Sara, siendo ya anciana, le dio un hijo, a quien mi patrón legó todos sus bienes.
37 My master made me take this oath, "You are not to choose a wife for my son from the daughters ofthe Canaanites in whose country I live.	37 Ahora bien, mi patrón me hizo prestar un juramento diciendo: «No busques una esposa para mi hijo entre las hijas de los cananeos, en cuyo país resido.
38 Instead, you are to go to my father's home and to my own kinsfolk to choose a wife for my son."	38 Ve, en cambio, a mi casa paterna, y busca entre mis familiares una esposa para mi hijo».
39 I said to my master, "Suppose the girl wil not agree to come with me?"	39 «¿Y si la mujer se niega a venir conmigo?», le pregunté.
40 and his reply was, "Yahweh, in whose presence I have walked, will send his angel with you andmake your journey successful, for you to choose a wife for my son from my own kinsfolk, from my father's house.	40 Pero él me respondió: «El Señor, en cuya presencia he caminado siempre, enviará su Angel delante de ti, y hará que logres tu cometido, trayendo para mi hijo una esposa de mi propia familia, de mi casa paterna.
41 Then you wil be quit of my curse: if you go to my family and they refuse you, you will be quit of mycurse."	41 Para quedar libre del juramento que me haces, debes visitar primero a mis familiares. Si ellos no quieren dártela, el juramento ya no te obligará».
42 Arriving today at the spring I said, "Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, please grant a successfuloutcome to the course I propose to take.	42 Por eso hoy, al llegar a la fuente, dije: «Señor, Dios de mi patrón Abraham, permíteme llevar a cabo la misión que he venido a realizar.
43 While I stand by the spring, if a girl comes out to draw water and I say to her, 'Please give me a littlewater to drink from your pitcher,'	43 Yo me quedaré parado junto a la fuente, y cuando salga una joven a buscar agua, le diré: Déjame beber un poco de agua de tu cántaro.
44 if she replies, 'Drink by all means, and I shall draw water for your camels too,' let her be the girlwhom Yahweh has decreed for my master's son."	44 Y si ella me responde: Bebe, y también sacaré agua para que beban tus camellos, esa será la mujer que tú has destinado para el hijo de mi señor».
45 I was stil saying this in my mind when Rebekah came out, her pitcher on her shoulder. She camedown to the spring and drew water. I said to her, "Please give me a drink."	45 Apenas terminé de decir estas cosas, salió Rebeca con un cántaro sobre el hombro. Y cuando bajó a la fuente para sacar agua, le dije: «Por favor, dame de beber».
46 Quickly she lowered her pitcher saying, "Drink, and I shal water your camels too."	46 Ella se apresuró a bajar el cántaro de su hombro y respondió: «Bebe, y también daré de beber a tus camellos». Yo bebí, y ella dio agua a los camellos».
47 I asked her, "Whose daughter are you?" She replied, "I am the daughter of Bethuel, whom Milcahbore to Nahor." Then I put this ring through her nose and these bracelets on her arms.	47 Después le pregunté: «¿De quién eres hija?». «Soy hija de Betuel, el hijo que Milcá dio a Najor», respondió ella. Yo le puse el anillo en la nariz y las pulseras en los brazos,
48 I bowed down and worshipped Yahweh, and I blessed Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, whohad led me by a direct path to choose the daughter of my master's brother for his son.	48 y postrándome, adoré y bendije al Señor, el Dios de Abraham, que me guió por el buen camino, para que pudiera llevar al hijo de mi patrón una hija de su pariente.
49 Now tel me whether you are prepared to show constant and faithful love to my master; if not, say so,and I shall know what to do.'	49 Y ahora, si ustedes están dispuestos a ofrecer a mi patrón una auténtica prueba de amistad, díganmelo; si no, díganmelo también. Así yo sabré a qué atenerme».
50 Laban and Bethuel replied, 'This is from Yahweh; it is not for us to say yes or no to you.	50 Labán y Betuel dijeron: «Todo esto viene del Señor. Nosotros no podemos responderte ni sí ni no.
51 Rebekah is there before you. Take her and go; and let her become the wife of your master's son, asYahweh has decreed.'	51 Ahí tienes a Rebeca: llévala contigo, y que sea la esposa de tu patrón, como el Señor lo ha dispuesto:.
52 On hearing this, Abraham's servant bowed to the ground before Yahweh.	52 Cuando el servidor de Abraham oyó estas palabras, se postró en tierra delante del Señor.
53 He brought out silver and gold ornaments and clothes which he gave to Rebekah; he also gave richpresents to her brother and to her mother.	53 Luego sacó unos objetos de oro y plata y algunos vestidos, y se los obsequió a Rebeca. También entregó regalos a su hermano y a su madre.
54 They ate and drank, he and his companions, and spent the night there. Next morning when theywere up, he said, 'Let me go back to my master.'	54 Después él y sus acompañantes comieron y bebieron, y pasaron la noche allí. A la mañana siguiente, apenas se levantaron, el servidor dijo: «Déjenme regresar a la casa de mi patrón».
55 Rebekah's brother and mother replied, 'Let the girl stay with us for ten days or so; then she can go.'	55 El hermano y la madre de Rebeca respondieron: «Que la muchacha se quede con nosotros unos diez días más. Luego podrás irte».
56 But he replied, 'Do not delay me, since Yahweh has made my journey successful; let me leave andgo back to my master.'	56 Pero el servidor replicó: «No me detengan, ahora que el Señor me permitió lograr mi cometido. Déjenme ir, y volveré a la casa de mi patrón».
57 They replied, 'Let us cal the girl and find out what she has to say.'	57 Ellos dijeron: «Llamemos a la muchacha, y preguntémosle qué opina».
58 They cal ed Rebekah and asked her, 'Wil you go with this man?' She replied, 'I will.'	58 Entonces llamaron a Rebeca y le preguntaron: «¿Quieres irte con este hombre?». «Sí», respondió ella.
59 Accordingly they let their sister Rebekah go, with her nurse, and Abraham's servant and his men.	59 Ellos despidieron a Rebeca y a su nodriza, lo mismo que al servidor y a sus acompañantes,
60 They blessed Rebekah and said to her: Sister of ours, from you may there spring thousands andtens of thousands! May your descendants gain possession of the gates of their enemies!	60 y la bendijeron, diciendo: «Hermana nuestra, que nazcan de ti millares y decenas de millares; y que tus descendientes conquisten las ciudades de sus enemigos».
61 And forthwith, Rebekah and her maids mounted the camels, and fol owed the man. The servant tookRebekah and departed.	61 Rebeca y sus sirvientas montaron en los camellos y siguieron al hombre. Este tomó consigo a Rebeca, y partió.
62 Isaac meanwhile had come back from the wel of Lahai Roi and was living in the Negeb.	62 Entretanto, Isaac había vuelto de las cercanías del pozo de Lajai Roí, porque estaba radicado en la región del Négueb.
63 While Isaac was out walking towards evening in the fields, he looked up and saw camelsapproaching.	63 Al atardecer salió a caminar por el campo, y vio venir unos camellos.
64 And Rebekah looked up and saw Isaac. She jumped down from her camel,	64 Cuando Rebeca vio a Isaac, bajó del camello
65 and asked the servant, 'Who is that man walking through the fields towards us?' The servant replied,'That is my master.' So she took her veil and covered herself up.	65 y preguntó al servidor: «¿Quién es ese hombre que viene hacia nosotros por el campo?». «Es mi señor», respondió el servidor. Entonces ella tomó su velo y se cubrió.
66 The servant told Isaac the whole story.	66 El servidor contó a Isaac todas las cosas que había hecho,
67 Then Isaac took her into his tent. He married Rebekah and made her his wife. And in his love for her,Isaac was consoled for the loss of his mother.	67 y este hizo entrar a Rebeca en su carpa. Isaac se casó con ella y la amó. Así encontró un consuelo después de la muerte de su madre.
