Genesis 24

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 By now Abraham was an old man, well on in years, and Yahweh had blessed Abraham in every way.	1 Abramo era vecchio, avanzato negli anni, e il Signore lo aveva benedetto in ogni cosa.
2 Abraham said to the senior servant in his household, the steward of al his property, 'Place your handunder my thigh:	2 Allora Abramo disse al suo servo, il più anziano della sua casa, che amministrava tutti i suoi beni: "Metti la tua mano sotto il femore mio,
3 I am going to make you swear by Yahweh, God of heaven and God of earth, that you wil not choosea wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I live	3 e io ti farò giurare per il Signore, Dio del cielo e della terra, che tu non prenderai per mio figlio una moglie tra le figlie dei Cananei, in mezzo ai quali io abito,
4 but wil go to my native land and my own kinsfolk to choose a wife for my son Isaac.'	4 ma che andrai al mio paese e alla mia parentela a prendere una moglie per il figlio mio Isacco".
5 The servant asked him, 'What if the girl does not want to fol ow me to this country? Should I then takeyour son back to the country from which you come?'	5 Gli disse il servo: "Può darsi che quella donna non si senta di seguirmi in questo paese; dovrò forse ricondurre tuo figlio alla terra donde sei tu uscito?".
6 Abraham replied, 'On no account are you to take my son back there.	6 Gli rispose Abramo: "Guardati dal ricondurre colà il mio figliolo!
7 Yahweh, God of heaven and God of earth, who took me from my father's home, and from the land ofmy kinsfolk, and who promised me on oath, "I shal give this country to your descendants"-he will now send hisangel ahead of you, so that you can get a wife for my son from there.	7 Il Signore, Dio del cielo e della terra, che mi ha tolto dalla casa di mio padre e dalla terra dei miei padri, colui che mi ha parlato e mi ha giurato dicendo: "Alla tua discendenza darò questo paese", egli stesso manderà il suo angelo davanti a te, cosicché tu possa prendere di là una moglie per il mio figliolo.
8 If then the girl refuses to follow you, you will be quit of this oath to me. Only do not take my son backthere.'	8 Che se la donna non si sentirà di seguirti, allora sarai libero dal giuramento fatto a mio favore; soltanto non devi ricondurre colà il mio figliolo".
9 And the servant placed his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham, and swore to him that hewould do it.	9 Allora il servo mise la mano sotto la coscia di Abramo, suo padrone, e gli prestò giuramento riguardo a questo affare.
10 The servant took ten of his master's camels and, carrying all kinds of gifts from his master, set out forthe city of Nahor in Aram Naharaim.	10 Poi il servo prese dieci cammelli del suo padrone e, provvisto di ogni sorta di cose preziose del suo padrone, si mise in viaggio e andò nel paese dei due fiumi, alla città di Nacor.
11 In the evening, at the time when women come out to draw water, he made the camels kneel outsidethe town near the wel .	11 Fece inginocchiare i cammelli fuori della città, presso il pozzo d'acqua, nell'ora della sera, l'ora in cui sogliono uscire le donne ad attingere.
12 And he said, 'Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, give me success today and show faithful love tomy master Abraham.	12 Poi disse: "Signore, Dio del mio signore Abramo, dammi fortuna quest'oggi, te ne prego, e usa benevolenza verso il mio signore Abramo!
13 While I stand by the spring as the young women from the town come out to draw water,	13 Ecco, io mi metto ritto presso la fonte dell'acqua, mentre le figlie degli uomini della città escono per attingere acqua.
14 I shal say to one of the girls, "Please lower your pitcher and let me drink." And if she answers,"Drink, and I shal water your camels too," let her be the one you have decreed for your servant Isaac; by this Ishall know you have shown faithful love to my master.'	14 Ebbene, la giovinetta alla quale dirò: "Abbassa, per favore, la tua anfora e lasciami bere" e quella dirà: "Bevi, e anche ai tuoi cammelli darò da bere", sarà quella che tu hai destinato al tuo servo, a Isacco; e da questo conoscerò che tu hai usato benevolenza al mio signore".
15 He had not finished speaking when out came Rebekah -- who was the daughter of Bethuel son ofMilcah, the wife of Abraham's brother Nahor -- with a pitcher on her shoulder.	15 Ora egli non aveva ancora finito di parlare, quand'ecco Rebecca, che era nata a Betuèl, figlio di Milca, moglie di Nacor, fratello di Abramo, usciva con l'anfora sulla sua spalla.
16 The girl was very beautiful, and a virgin; no man had touched her. She went down to the spring, fil edher pitcher and came up again.	16 La giovinetta era assai avvenente d'aspetto, era vergine e non aveva conosciuto alcun uomo. Essa scese alla sorgente, riempì l'anfora e risalì.
17 Running towards her, the servant said, 'Please give me a sip of water from your pitcher.'	17 Il servo allora le corse incontro e disse: "Fammi sorbire, per favore, un po' d'acqua dalla tua anfora!".
18 She replied, 'Drink, my lord,' and quickly lowered her pitcher on her arm and gave him a drink.	18 Rispose: "Bevi, signor mio!". Si affrettò a calare la sua anfora sulla mano e lo fece bere.
19 When she had finished letting him drink, she said, 'I shall draw water for your camels, too, until theyhave had enough.'	19 Dopo che ella finì di farlo bere, disse: "Anche per i tuoi cammelli attingerò, finché abbiano bevuto abbastanza".
20 She quickly emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran to the wel again to draw, and drew for althe camels.	20 E presto vuotò l'anfora nell'abbeveratoio, poi corse di nuovo ad attingere al pozzo, e attinse per tutti i cammelli di lui.
21 Al the while, the man stood watching her, not daring to speak, wondering whether Yahweh hadmade his journey successful or not.	21 Intanto quell'uomo la contemplava in silenzio, in attesa di conoscere se il Signore avesse o no fatto riuscire il suo viaggio.
22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took a gold ring weighing half a shekel, and put itthrough her nose, and put two bracelets weighing ten gold shekels on her arms,	22 Quando i cammelli ebbero finito di bere, quell'uomo prese un anello d'oro, del peso di mezzo siclo, e lo pose alle sue narici e due braccialetti alle braccia, del peso di dieci sicli d'oro;
23 and said, 'Whose daughter are you? Please tel me. Is there room at your father's house for us tospend the night?'	23 poi disse: "Di chi sei figlia? Dimmelo, per favore. C'è posto per noi in casa di tuo padre, per passarvi la notte?".
24 She replied, 'I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son whom Milcah bore to Nahor.'	24 Gli rispose: "Io sono figlia di Betuèl, il figlio di Milca, ch'essa partorì a Nacor".
25 And she went on, 'We have plenty of straw and fodder, and room to spend the night.'	25 Soggiunse: "C'è strame e paglia in quantità da noi, e anche posto per passare la notte".
26 Then the man bowed down and worshipped Yahweh	26 Allora quell'uomo si prostrò, adorò il Signore
27 saying, 'Blessed be Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, for not withholding his faithful love frommy master. Yahweh has led me straight to the house of my master's brother.'	27 e disse: "Sia benedetto il Signore, Dio del mio padrone Abramo, che non ha cessato di usare benevolenza e fedeltà verso il mio signore! Quanto a me, il Signore mi ha guidato per via, fino alla casa dei fratelli del mio signore!".
28 The girl ran to her mother's house to tel what had happened.	28 La giovinetta corse a raccontare alla casa di sua madre tutte queste cose.
29 Now Rebekah had a brother cal ed Laban, and Laban ran out to the man at the spring.	29 Or Rebecca aveva un fratello di nome Làbano. Anche Làbano corse fuori da quell'uomo alla sorgente.
30 As soon as he had seen the ring and the bracelets his sister was wearing, and had heard his sisterRebekah saying, 'This is what the man said to me,' he went to the man and found him stil standing by hiscamels at the spring.	30 Quando infatti ebbe visto il pendente e i braccialetti sulle braccia di sua sorella e quand'ebbe udito le parole di Rebecca, sua sorella, che diceva: "Così mi ha parlato quell'uomo", venne da quell'uomo, ed eccolo che se ne stava in piedi, presso i cammelli vicino alla sorgente.
31 He said to him, 'Come in, blessed of Yahweh, why stay out here when I have cleared the house andmade room for the camels?'	31 Gli disse: "Vieni, o benedetto dal Signore! Perché te ne stai fermo, fuori, mentre io ho preparato la casa e il posto per i cammelli?".
32 The man went to the house, and Laban unloaded the camels. He provided straw and fodder for thecamels and water for him and his companions to wash their feet.	32 Allora l'uomo entrò in casa e quello tolse il basto ai cammelli, fornì strame e foraggio ai cammelli e acqua per lavare i piedi di lui e i piedi degli uomini ch'erano con lui.
33 They offered him food, but he said, 'I wil eat nothing before I have said what I have to say.' Labansaid, 'Speak.'	33 Poi gli fu posto davanti da mangiare, ma egli disse: "Non mangerò, finché non avrò detto le parole che io ho da dire!". Gli risposero: "Di' pure!".
34 He said, 'I am Abraham's servant.	34 Disse allora: "Io sono servo di Abramo.
35 Yahweh has loaded my master with blessings, and Abraham is now very rich. He has given himflocks and herds, silver and gold, men and women slaves, camels and donkeys.	35 Il Signore ha molto benedetto il mio padrone, che è diventato potente; gli ha dato greggi e armenti, argento e oro, schiavi e schiave, cammelli e asini.
36 Sarah, my master's wife, bore my master a son in his old age, and he has made over al his propertyto him.	36 Poi Sara, la moglie del mio padrone, ha partorito un figlio al mio signore, quando ormai era vecchio, ed egli ha dato a lui tutti i suoi beni.
37 My master made me take this oath, "You are not to choose a wife for my son from the daughters ofthe Canaanites in whose country I live.	37 Il mio signore mi ha fatto giurare in questi termini: "Non devi prendere per mio figlio una moglie tra le figlie dei Cananei, in mezzo ai quali abito;
38 Instead, you are to go to my father's home and to my own kinsfolk to choose a wife for my son."	38 ma andrai alla casa di mio padre, alla mia famiglia, a prendere una moglie per il figlio mio".
39 I said to my master, "Suppose the girl wil not agree to come with me?"	39 Io dissi al mio padrone: "Può darsi che la donna non mi segua".
40 and his reply was, "Yahweh, in whose presence I have walked, will send his angel with you andmake your journey successful, for you to choose a wife for my son from my own kinsfolk, from my father's house.	40 Mi rispose: "Il Signore, alla cui presenza io cammino continuamente, manderà teco il suo angelo e farà riuscire il tuo viaggio, cosicché tu possa prendere una moglie per il mio figliolo dalla mia famiglia e dalla casa di mio padre.
41 Then you wil be quit of my curse: if you go to my family and they refuse you, you will be quit of mycurse."	41 Solo allora sarai esente dalla mia maledizione, quando sarai andato alla mia famiglia; anche se non te la daranno, sarai esente dalla mia maledizione".
42 Arriving today at the spring I said, "Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, please grant a successfuloutcome to the course I propose to take.	42 Così oggi sono arrivato alla fonte e ho detto: "Signore, Dio del mio padrone Abramo, di grazia, se tu stai per far riuscire il viaggio che sto facendo,
43 While I stand by the spring, if a girl comes out to draw water and I say to her, 'Please give me a littlewater to drink from your pitcher,'	43 ecco, io mi metto ritto presso la fonte d'acqua; ebbene, la giovane che uscirà ad attingere, alla quale io dirò: Fammi bere, per favore, un po' d'acqua dalla tua anfora',
44 if she replies, 'Drink by all means, and I shall draw water for your camels too,' let her be the girlwhom Yahweh has decreed for my master's son."	44 e che mi dirà: 'Bevi tu e anche per i tuoi cammelli io attingerò', sarà quella la moglie che il Signore ha destinato al figliolo del mio padrone".
45 I was stil saying this in my mind when Rebekah came out, her pitcher on her shoulder. She camedown to the spring and drew water. I said to her, "Please give me a drink."	45 Io non avevo ancora finito di parlare, quand'ecco Rebecca uscire con l'anfora sulla sua spalla; discese alla fonte, attinse ed io le dissi: "Fammi bere, per favore!".
46 Quickly she lowered her pitcher saying, "Drink, and I shal water your camels too."	46 Subito essa calò giù la sua anfora e disse: "Bevi; e anche ai tuoi cammelli darò da bere!". Così io bevvi ed essa diede da bere anche ai cammelli.
47 I asked her, "Whose daughter are you?" She replied, "I am the daughter of Bethuel, whom Milcahbore to Nahor." Then I put this ring through her nose and these bracelets on her arms.	47 Allora io la interrogai e le dissi: "Di chi sei figlia?". Mi rispose: "Sono figlia di Betuèl, figlio di Nacor, che Milca gli partorì". Allora io le ho posto il pendente alle narici e i braccialetti alle braccia.
48 I bowed down and worshipped Yahweh, and I blessed Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, whohad led me by a direct path to choose the daughter of my master's brother for his son.	48 Poi mi prostrai, adorai e benedissi il Signore Dio del mio padrone Abramo, il quale mi ha guidato per la via giusta a prendere per suo figlio la figlia del fratello del mio signore.
49 Now tel me whether you are prepared to show constant and faithful love to my master; if not, say so,and I shall know what to do.'	49 Ed ora, se intendete usare benevolenza e fedeltà verso il mio signore, fatemelo sapere; e se no, fatemelo pure sapere, perché io mi rivolga a destra o a sinistra".
50 Laban and Bethuel replied, 'This is from Yahweh; it is not for us to say yes or no to you.	50 Allora Làbano e Betuèl risposero e dissero: "E' dal Signore che la cosa procede; non possiamo parlarti né in male né in bene.
51 Rebekah is there before you. Take her and go; and let her become the wife of your master's son, asYahweh has decreed.'	51 Ecco Rebecca davanti a te; prendila e va', e sia la moglie del figlio del tuo signore, così come ha parlato il Signore".
52 On hearing this, Abraham's servant bowed to the ground before Yahweh.	52 Quando il servo di Abramo ebbe udito le loro parole, si prostrò a terra, adorando il Signore.
53 He brought out silver and gold ornaments and clothes which he gave to Rebekah; he also gave richpresents to her brother and to her mother.	53 Poi il servo tirò fuori oggetti di argento e oggetti d'oro e vesti e li diede a Rebecca; cose preziose donò pure al fratello e alla madre di lei.
54 They ate and drank, he and his companions, and spent the night there. Next morning when theywere up, he said, 'Let me go back to my master.'	54 Poi mangiarono e bevvero egli e gli uomini che erano con lui, e passarono la notte. Alzatisi alla mattina, egli disse: "Lasciatemi andare dal mio signore!".
55 Rebekah's brother and mother replied, 'Let the girl stay with us for ten days or so; then she can go.'	55 Ma il fratello di lei e la madre dissero: "Rimanga la giovinetta con noi qualche giorno o una diecina di giorni, dopo te ne andrai".
56 But he replied, 'Do not delay me, since Yahweh has made my journey successful; let me leave andgo back to my master.'	56 Rispose loro: "Non trattenetemi, perché il Signore ha fatto riuscire il mio viaggio. Lasciatemi partire, affinché io possa andare dal mio signore!".
57 They replied, 'Let us cal the girl and find out what she has to say.'	57 Dissero allora: "Chiamiamo la giovinetta per chiedere la sua opinione".
58 They cal ed Rebekah and asked her, 'Wil you go with this man?' She replied, 'I will.'	58 Chiamarono Rebecca e le dissero: "Vuoi forse partire con quest'uomo?". Essa rispose: "Partirò!".
59 Accordingly they let their sister Rebekah go, with her nurse, and Abraham's servant and his men.	59 Allora essi lasciarono partire Rebecca con la sua balia, insieme col servo di Abramo e i suoi uomini.
60 They blessed Rebekah and said to her: Sister of ours, from you may there spring thousands andtens of thousands! May your descendants gain possession of the gates of their enemies!	60 Benedissero Rebecca e le dissero: "O tu, sorella nostra, diventa migliaia di miriadi, e la tua stirpe conquisti la porta dei tuoi nemici!"
61 And forthwith, Rebekah and her maids mounted the camels, and fol owed the man. The servant tookRebekah and departed.	61 Così Rebecca e le sue ancelle si levarono, montarono sui cammelli e seguirono quell'uomo. E il servo prese con sé Rebecca e partì.
62 Isaac meanwhile had come back from the wel of Lahai Roi and was living in the Negeb.	62 Intanto Isacco era venuto nel deserto di Lacai-Roi; abitava infatti nel territorio del Negheb.
63 While Isaac was out walking towards evening in the fields, he looked up and saw camelsapproaching.	63 Isacco uscì, sul far della sera, per divagarsi, quand'ecco, alzando gli occhi, vide venire dei cammelli.
64 And Rebekah looked up and saw Isaac. She jumped down from her camel,	64 Alzò gli occhi anche Rebecca e vide Isacco e subito scivolò giù dal cammello.
65 and asked the servant, 'Who is that man walking through the fields towards us?' The servant replied,'That is my master.' So she took her veil and covered herself up.	65 Domandò al servo: "Chi è quell'uomo che viene attraverso la steppa, incontro a noi?". Il servo rispose: "E' il mio signore!". Allora essa prese il velo e si coprì.
66 The servant told Isaac the whole story.	66 Poi il servo raccontò ad Isacco tutte le cose che aveva fatto.
67 Then Isaac took her into his tent. He married Rebekah and made her his wife. And in his love for her,Isaac was consoled for the loss of his mother.	67 E Isacco introdusse Rebecca nella tenda ch'era stata di Sara sua madre; poi si prese Rebecca in moglie e l'amò. Così Isacco si consolò dopo la morte della madre sua.
