Genesis 17

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old Yahweh appeared to him and said, 'I am El Shaddai. Live inmy presence, be perfect,	1 Lorsqu'Abram eut atteint 99 ans, Yahvé lui apparut et lui dit: "Je suis El Shaddaï, marche en maprésence et sois parfait.
2 and I shal grant a covenant between myself and you, and make you very numerous.'	2 J'institue mon alliance entre moi et toi, et je t'accroîtrai extrêmement."
3 And Abram bowed to the ground. God spoke to him as follows,	3 Et Abram tomba la face contre terre. Dieu lui parla ainsi:
4 'For my part, this is my covenant with you: you wil become the father of many nations.	4 "Moi, voici mon alliance avec toi: tu deviendras père d'une multitude de nations.
5 And you are no longer to be cal ed Abram; your name is to be Abraham, for I am making you father ofmany nations.	5 Et l'on ne t'appellera plus Abram, mais ton nom sera Abraham, car je te fais père d'une multitude denations.
6 I shal make you exceedingly fertile. I shall make you into nations, and your issue wil be kings.	6 Je te rendrai extrêmement fécond, de toi je ferai des nations, et des rois sortiront de toi.
7 And I shal maintain my covenant between myself and you, and your descendants after you,generation after generation, as a covenant in perpetuity, to be your God and the God of your descendants afteryou.	7 J'établirai mon alliance entre moi et toi, et ta race après toi, de génération en génération, unealliance perpétuelle, pour être ton Dieu et celui de ta race après toi.
8 And to you and to your descendants after you, I shal give the country where you are now immigrants,the entire land of Canaan, to own in perpetuity. And I shal be their God.'	8 A toi et à ta race après toi, je donnerai le pays où tu séjournes, tout le pays de Canaan, enpossession à perpétuité, et je serai votre Dieu."
9 God further said to Abraham, 'You for your part must keep my covenant, you and your descendantsafter you, generation after generation.	9 Dieu dit à Abraham: "Et toi, tu observeras mon alliance, toi et ta race après toi, de génération engénération.
10 This is my covenant which you must keep between myself and you, and your descendants after you:every one of your males must be circumcised.	10 Et voici mon alliance qui sera observée entre moi et vous, c'est-à-dire ta race après toi: que tousvos mâles soient circoncis.
11 You must circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and that wil be the sign of the covenant betweenmyself and you.	11 Vous ferez circoncire la chair de votre prépuce, et ce sera le signe de l'alliance entre moi et vous.
12 As soon as he is eight days old, every one of your males, generation after generation, must becircumcised, including slaves born within the household or bought from a foreigner not of your descent.	12 Quand ils auront huit jours, tous vos mâles seront circoncis, de génération en génération. Qu'ilsoit né dans la maison ou acheté à prix d'argent à quelque étranger qui n'est pas de ta race,
13 Whether born within the household or bought, they must be circumcised. My covenant must bemarked in your flesh as a covenant in perpetuity.	13 on devra circoncire celui qui est né dans la maison et celui qui est acheté à prix d'argent. Monalliance sera marquée dans votre chair comme une alliance perpétuelle.
14 The uncircumcised male, whose foreskin has not been circumcised -- that person must be cut offfrom his people: he has broken my covenant.'	14 L'incirconcis, le mâle dont on n'aura pas coupé la chair du prépuce, cette vie-là sera retranchée desa parenté: il a violé mon alliance."
15 Furthermore God said to Abraham, 'As regards your wife Sarai, you must not cal her Sarai, butSarah.	15 Dieu dit à Abraham: "Ta femme Saraï, tu ne l'appelleras plus Saraï, mais son nom est Sara.
16 I shal bless her and moreover give you a son by her. I shal bless her and she will become nations:kings of peoples wil issue from her.'	16 Je la bénirai et même je te donnerai d'elle un fils; je la bénirai, elle deviendra des nations, et desrois de peuples viendront d'elle."
17 Abraham bowed to the ground, and he laughed, thinking to himself, 'Is a child to be born to a manone hundred years old, and wil Sarah have a child at the age of ninety?'	17 Abraham tomba la face contre terre, et il se mit à rire car il se disait en lui-même: "Un fils naîtra-t-il à un homme de cent ans, et Sara qui a 90 ans va-t-elle enfanter?"
18 Abraham said to God, 'May Ishmael live in your presence! That wil be enough!'	18 Abraham dit à Dieu: "Oh! qu'Ismaël vive devant ta face!"
19 But God replied, 'Yes, your wife Sarah will bear you a son whom you must name Isaac. And I shalmaintain my covenant with him, a covenant in perpetuity, to be his God and the God of his descendants afterhim.	19 Mais Dieu reprit: "Non, mais ta femme Sara te donnera un fils, tu l'appelleras Isaac, j'établiraimon alliance avec lui, comme une alliance perpétuelle, pour être son Dieu et celui de sa race après lui.
20 For Ishmael too I grant you your request. I hereby bless him and wil make him fruitful andexceedingly numerous. He wil be the father of twelve princes, and I shal make him into a great nation.	20 En faveur d'Ismaël aussi, je t'ai entendu: je le bénis, je le rendrai fécond, je le ferai croîtreextrêmement, il engendrera douze princes et je ferai de lui une grande nation.
21 But my covenant I shall maintain with Isaac, whom Sarah wil bear you at this time next year.'	21 Mais mon alliance, je l'établirai avec Isaac, que va t'enfanter Sara, l'an prochain à cette saison."
22 When he had finished speaking to Abraham, God went up from him.	22 Lorsqu'il eut fini de lui parler, Dieu remonta d'auprès d'Abraham.
23 Then Abraham took his son Ishmael, al the slaves born in his household or whom he had bought, inshort al the males among the people of Abraham's household, and circumcised their foreskins that same day,as God had said to him.	23 Alors Abraham prit son fils Ismaël, tous ceux qui étaient nés dans sa maison, tous ceux qu'il avaitacquis de son argent, bref tous les mâles parmi les gens de la maison d'Abraham, et il circoncit la chair de leurprépuce, ce jour même, comme Dieu le lui avait dit.
24 Abraham was ninety-nine years old when his foreskin was circumcised.	24 Abraham était âgé de 99 ans lorsqu'on circoncit la chair de son prépuce
25 Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when his foreskin was circumcised.	25 et Ismaël, son fils, était âgé de treize ans lorsqu'on circoncit la chair de son prépuce.
26 Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised on the very same day,	26 Ce jour même furent circoncis Abraham et son fils Ismaël,
27 and al the men of his household, those born in the household and those bought from foreigners,were circumcised with him.	27 et tous les hommes de sa maison, enfants de la maison ou acquis d'un étranger à prix d'argent,furent circoncis avec lui.
