Genesis 17

1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old Yahweh appeared to him and said, 'I am El Shaddai. Live inmy presence, be perfect,	1 Lorsque Abram avait 99 ans, Yahvé lui apparut et lui dit: “Je suis le Dieu de la Steppe, marche devant moi et sois parfait.
2 and I shal grant a covenant between myself and you, and make you very numerous.'	2 J’établirai mon alliance entre moi et toi, je te multiplierai encore et encore.”
3 And Abram bowed to the ground. God spoke to him as follows,	3 Abram se prosterna et Dieu lui parla ainsi:
4 'For my part, this is my covenant with you: you wil become the father of many nations.	4 “Voici quelle alliance je fais avec toi: tu vas devenir le père de nations nombreuses.
5 And you are no longer to be cal ed Abram; your name is to be Abraham, for I am making you father ofmany nations.	5 Aussi ne t’appellera-t-on plus du nom d’Abram, mais ton nom sera Abraham, car je ferai de toi le père de nombreuses nations.
6 I shal make you exceedingly fertile. I shall make you into nations, and your issue wil be kings.	6 “Je te rendrai fécond, très fécond. Tu deviendras, non pas une, mais des nations, et des rois sortiront de toi.
7 And I shal maintain my covenant between myself and you, and your descendants after you,generation after generation, as a covenant in perpetuity, to be your God and the God of your descendants afteryou.	7 J’établirai mon alliance, une alliance perpétuelle, entre moi et toi et ta descendance après toi, de génération en génération: je serai ton Dieu et celui de ta descendance après toi.
8 And to you and to your descendants after you, I shal give the country where you are now immigrants,the entire land of Canaan, to own in perpetuity. And I shal be their God.'	8 Tout ce pays de Canaan, cette terre où tu es un nomade, je te le donnerai, et à ta descendance après toi, comme une propriété perpétuelle; et je serai leur Dieu.”
9 God further said to Abraham, 'You for your part must keep my covenant, you and your descendantsafter you, generation after generation.	9 Dieu dit à Abraham: “Tu garderas mon alliance, toi et ta descendance après toi, de génération en génération.
10 This is my covenant which you must keep between myself and you, and your descendants after you:every one of your males must be circumcised.	10 Voici l’alliance que vous garderez, que j’établis entre moi et toi, et ta descendance après toi: tout mâle parmi vous sera circoncis.
11 You must circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and that wil be the sign of the covenant betweenmyself and you.	11 Vous circoncirez votre chair, votre prépuce, et ce sera le signe de l’alliance entre moi et vous.
12 As soon as he is eight days old, every one of your males, generation after generation, must becircumcised, including slaves born within the household or bought from a foreigner not of your descent.	12 De génération en génération, tout mâle parmi vous sera circoncis à l’âge de huit jours, aussi bien celui qui est né dans la maison, que celui qui a été acheté à prix d’argent chez des étrangers qui ne sont pas de ta race.
13 Whether born within the household or bought, they must be circumcised. My covenant must bemarked in your flesh as a covenant in perpetuity.	13 Tu circonciras celui qui est né dans ta maison comme celui qui a été acheté avec ton argent. Mon alliance sera gravée dans votre chair, elle deviendra ainsi une alliance perpétuelle.
14 The uncircumcised male, whose foreskin has not been circumcised -- that person must be cut offfrom his people: he has broken my covenant.'	14 Celui qui n’aura pas été circoncis, le mâle dont on n’aura pas coupé le prépuce, sera retranché de sa parenté: il aura violé mon alliance.”
15 Furthermore God said to Abraham, 'As regards your wife Sarai, you must not cal her Sarai, butSarah.	15 Dieu dit à Abraham: “Tu n’appelleras plus ta femme Saraï, son nom sera désormais Sara:
16 I shal bless her and moreover give you a son by her. I shal bless her and she will become nations:kings of peoples wil issue from her.'	16 je la bénirai et je te donnerai par elle un fils. Je la bénirai et elle deviendra, non pas une, mais des nations: des peuples et des rois sortiront d’elle.”
17 Abraham bowed to the ground, and he laughed, thinking to himself, 'Is a child to be born to a manone hundred years old, and wil Sarah have a child at the age of ninety?'	17 Abraham tomba la face contre terre et se mit à rire; il se disait: “Est-ce qu’un homme âgé de 100 ans peut donner la vie à un fils? Et Sara, une femme de 90 ans, peut-elle encore enfanter?”
18 Abraham said to God, 'May Ishmael live in your presence! That wil be enough!'	18 Abraham dit à Dieu: “Si seulement Ismaël pouvait vivre pour te servir.”
19 But God replied, 'Yes, your wife Sarah will bear you a son whom you must name Isaac. And I shalmaintain my covenant with him, a covenant in perpetuity, to be his God and the God of his descendants afterhim.	19 Mais Dieu lui répondit: “Pas du tout! Sara, ta femme, t’enfantera un fils et tu lui donneras le nom d’Isaac. J’établirai mon alliance avec lui, une alliance perpétuelle, pour être son Dieu et celui de sa descendance après lui.
20 For Ishmael too I grant you your request. I hereby bless him and wil make him fruitful andexceedingly numerous. He wil be the father of twelve princes, and I shal make him into a great nation.	20 Cependant, je t’ai entendu au sujet d’Ismaël. Oui, je le bénirai, je le rendrai fécond, je le multiplierai encore et encore, il sera le père de douze princes et je ferai de lui une grande nation.
21 But my covenant I shall maintain with Isaac, whom Sarah wil bear you at this time next year.'	21 Mais l’an prochain à cette date, Sara t’enfantera Isaac et c’est avec lui que j’établirai mon alliance.”
22 When he had finished speaking to Abraham, God went up from him.	22 Ayant ainsi terminé ce qu’il avait à dire à Abraham, Dieu remonta.
23 Then Abraham took his son Ishmael, al the slaves born in his household or whom he had bought, inshort al the males among the people of Abraham's household, and circumcised their foreskins that same day,as God had said to him.	23 Abraham prit Ismaël son fils, tous ceux qui étaient nés dans sa maison et tous ceux qu’il avait achetés à prix d’argent, en un mot tous ceux qui habitaient sa maison, et il les circoncit ce jour-là même, comme Dieu le lui avait ordonné.
24 Abraham was ninety-nine years old when his foreskin was circumcised.	24 Abraham avait 99 ans quand il fut circoncis;
25 Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when his foreskin was circumcised.	25 son fils Ismaël avait 13 ans quand il fut circoncis.
26 Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised on the very same day,	26 Ce jour-là même, Abraham et son fils Ismaël furent circoncis.
27 and al the men of his household, those born in the household and those bought from foreigners,were circumcised with him.	27 Les gens de sa maison, ceux qui étaient nés dans la maison, comme ceux qu’il avait achetés à un étranger à prix d’argent, tous furent circoncis avec lui.
