1 But David said to himself: "I shall perish some day at the hand of Saul. I have no choice but to escape to the land of the Philistines; then Saul will give up his continual search for me throughout the land of Israel, and I shall be out of his reach."	1 Davide pensò dentro di sé: "Certo un giorno o l'altro perirò per la mano di Saul. Non v'è di meglio per me che mettermi in salvo nella terra dei Filistei; Saul desisterà dal cercarmi ancora in tutti i confini di Israele e mi salverò".
2 Accordingly, David departed with his six hundred men and went over to Achish, son of Maoch, king of Gath.	2 Davide si mosse e passò, con i seicento uomini che erano con lui, da Achis, figlio di Maoch, re di Gat.
3 David and his men lived in Gath with Achish; each one had his family, and David had his two wives, Ahinoam from Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal from Carmel.	3 Davide dimorò presso Achis a Gat, lui e i suoi uomini, ognuno con la propria famiglia. Davide e le sue due mogli, Achinoàm di Izreèl e Abigail già moglie di Nabal.
4 When Saul was told that David had fled to Gath, he no longer searched for him.	4 Quando fu riferito a Saul che Davide si era rifugiato a Gat, egli non continuò più a dargli la caccia.
5 David said to Achish: "If I meet with your approval, let me have a place to live in one of the country towns. 6 That same day Achish gave him Ziklag, which has, therefore, belonged to the kings of Judah up to the present time.	6 In quel giorno Achis gli consegnò Ziklàg: per questo Ziklàg appartiene ai re di Giuda fino ad oggi.
7 In all, David lived a year and four months in the country of the Philistines.	7 Il numero dei giorni in cui Davide rimase nelle steppe dei Filistei fu di un anno e quattro mesi.
8 David and his men went up and made raids on the Geshurites, Girzites, and Amalekites-peoples living in the land between Telam, on the approach to Shur, and the land of Egypt.	8 Davide partiva con i suoi uomini a fare razzie presso i Ghesuriti, i Ghirziti e gli Amaleciti: essi abitavano la regione che va da Telam verso Sur, fino alla terra d'Egitto.
9 In attacking the land David would not leave a man or woman alive, but would carry off sheep, oxen, asses, camels, and clothes. On his return he brought these to Achish,	9 Davide devastava la regione e non lasciava vivo né uomo né donna, mentre catturava greggi e armenti, asini e cammelli e indumenti; al ritorno andava da Achis.
10 who asked, "Whom did you raid this time?" And David answered, "The Negeb of Judah," or "The Negeb of Jerahmeel," or "The Negeb of the Kenites."	10 Achis domandava: "Dove avete fatto razzie oggi?". Davide rispondeva: "Contro il Negheb di Giuda, contro il Negheb degli Ieracmeeliti, contro il Negheb dei Keniti".
11 But David would not leave a man or woman alive to be brought to Gath, fearing that they would betray him by saying, "This is what David did." This was his custom as long as he lived in the country of the Philistines.	11 Davide non lasciava vivo né uomo né donna da riportare a Gat, pensando: "Affinché non diano notizie a nostro riguardo, dicendo: "Così ha fatto Davide!". Tale fu la sua condotta tutti i giorni in cui rimase nella steppa dei Filistei.
12 And Achish trusted David, thinking, "He must certainly be detested by his people Israel. I shall have him as my vassal forever."	12 Achis ebbe fiducia in Davide pensando: "Certamente è diventato odioso al suo popolo Israele e sarà per sempre mio servo!".
