1 But David said to himself: "I shall perish some day at the hand of Saul. I have no choice but to escape to the land of the Philistines; then Saul will give up his continual search for me throughout the land of Israel, and I shall be out of his reach."	1 Sin embargo, David pensó: «A pesar de todo, Saúl terminará por matarme cualquier día de estos. Es mejor que me ponga a salvo en el país de los filisteos. Así Saúl perderá las esperanzas con respecto a mí: ya no me buscará por todo el territorio de Israel, y habré escapado de sus manos».
2 Accordingly, David departed with his six hundred men and went over to Achish, son of Maoch, king of Gath.	2 Luego David, con los seiscientos hombres que lo acompañaban, cruzó la frontera y se presentó a Aquís, hijo de Maóc, rey de Gat.
3 David and his men lived in Gath with Achish; each one had his family, and David had his two wives, Ahinoam from Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal from Carmel.	3 David y sus hombres se quedaron con Aquís, en Gat, cada uno con su familia, y David, con sus dos mujeres: Ajinóam, de Izreel, y Abigail, la esposa de Nabal, el de Carmel.
4 When Saul was told that David had fled to Gath, he no longer searched for him.	4 Saúl fue informado de que David había huido, y ya no lo buscó más.
5 David said to Achish: "If I meet with your approval, let me have a place to live in one of the country towns. Why should your servant live with you in the royal city?"	5 David dijo a Aquís: «Si quieres hacerme un favor, di que me asignen un lugar en alguna población de campaña, para instalarme allí. ¿Cómo tu servidor va a residir contigo en la ciudad real?».
6 That same day Achish gave him Ziklag, which has, therefore, belonged to the kings of Judah up to the present time.	6 Aquel mismo día, Aquís le asignó Siquelag. Por eso Siquelag ha pertenecido a los reyes de Israel hasta el día de hoy.
7 In all, David lived a year and four months in the country of the Philistines.	7 David permaneció en la región de los filisteos un año y cuatro meses.
8 David and his men went up and made raids on the Geshurites, Girzites, and Amalekites-peoples living in the land between Telam, on the approach to Shur, and the land of Egypt.	8 David subía con sus hombres, y atacaban por sorpresa a los guesuritas, los guirzitas y los amalecitas, porque esa gente ocupaba el territorio que va de Telam en dirección a Sur y hasta el país de Egipto.
9 In attacking the land David would not leave a man or woman alive, but would carry off sheep, oxen, asses, camels, and clothes. On his return he brought these to Achish,	9 David arrasaba el país, sin dejar a nadie con vida, ni hombre ni mujer; se llevaba ovejas, vacas, asnos, camellos y ropa, y luego volvía a presentarse ante Aquís.
10 who asked, "Whom did you raid this time?" And David answered, "The Negeb of Judah," or "The Negeb of Jerahmeel," or "The Negeb of the Kenites."	10 Cuando Aquís le decía: «¿Contra quién han incursionado hoy?», David le respondía: «Contra el Négueb de Judá»; o bien: «Contra el Négueb de los ierajmelitas»; o bien: «Hacia el Négueb de los quenitas».
11 But David would not leave a man or woman alive to be brought to Gath, fearing that they would betray him by saying, "This is what David did." This was his custom as long as he lived in the country of the Philistines.	11 David no dejaba que ningún hombre ni mujer fuera llevado con vida a Gat, porque decía: «No vaya a ser que nos denuncien, diciendo lo que ha hecho David». Este fue su modo de proceder todo el tiempo que estuvo en la región de los filisteos.
12 And Achish trusted David, thinking, "He must certainly be detested by his people Israel. I shall have him as my vassal forever."	12 Pero Aquís confiaba en él, porque pensaba: «Se ha hecho odioso a su pueblo Israel y será mi servidor para siempre».
