1 But David said to himself: "I shall perish some day at the hand of Saul. I have no choice but to escape to the land of the Philistines; then Saul will give up his continual search for me throughout the land of Israel, and I shall be out of his reach."	1 David se dit en lui-même: “Un jour ou l’autre Saül va me tuer. Il vaut mieux que je me réfugie chez les Philistins: Saül cessera de me rechercher dans tout le pays d’Israël et j’échapperai à sa main.”
2 Accordingly, David departed with his six hundred men and went over to Achish, son of Maoch, king of Gath.	2 David passa donc avec ses 600 hommes chez le roi de Gat, Akich fils de Maok.
3 David and his men lived in Gath with Achish; each one had his family, and David had his two wives, Ahinoam from Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal from Carmel.	3 David s’installa avec ses hommes auprès d’Akich, à Gat. Chacun était venu avec sa famille, David avec ses deux femmes: Ahinoam de Yizréel et Abigayil, femme de Nabal de Karmel.
4 When Saul was told that David had fled to Gath, he no longer searched for him.	4 On fit savoir à Saül que David s’était enfui à Gat, et Saül cessa de le rechercher.
5 David said to Achish: "If I meet with your approval, let me have a place to live in one of the country towns. Why should your servant live with you in the royal city?"	5 David dit à Akich: “Si vraiment j’ai conquis ton amitié, donne-moi une place dans l’une des villes des environs et je m’y installerai. Il n’y a aucune raison pour que j’habite à côté de toi dans la capitale.”
6 That same day Achish gave him Ziklag, which has, therefore, belonged to the kings of Judah up to the present time.	6 Akich ce jour-là lui donna Siklag et depuis ce jour, Siklag appartient aux rois de Juda.
7 In all, David lived a year and four months in the country of the Philistines.	7 David resta en territoire philistin pendant un an et quatre mois.
8 David and his men went up and made raids on the Geshurites, Girzites, and Amalekites-peoples living in the land between Telam, on the approach to Shur, and the land of Egypt.	8 David et ses hommes partirent en expédition contre les Guéchourites, les Girzites et les Amalécites: ces tribus occupent la région qui s’étend de Télam en direction de Chour et de l’Égypte.
9 In attacking the land David would not leave a man or woman alive, but would carry off sheep, oxen, asses, camels, and clothes. On his return he brought these to Achish,	9 David ravageait la contrée; il ne laissait en vie ni homme ni femme, il enlevait les brebis, les bœufs, les ânes, les chameaux et tous les vêtements; ensuite il revenait chez Akich.
10 who asked, "Whom did you raid this time?" And David answered, "The Negeb of Judah," or "The Negeb of Jerahmeel," or "The Negeb of the Kenites."	10 Akich lui disait: “Où avez-vous fait une expédition aujourd’hui?” Et David répondait: “Dans le Négueb de Juda”, ou: “Dans le Négueb de Yérahméel”, ou: “Dans le Négueb des Kénites.”
11 But David would not leave a man or woman alive to be brought to Gath, fearing that they would betray him by saying, "This is what David did." This was his custom as long as he lived in the country of the Philistines.	11 David ne laissait en vie ni homme ni femme, il ne voulait pas ramener à Gat quelqu’un qui aurait pu lui faire du tort et dire: “Voici ce qu’a fait David.” Telle fut la façon d’agir de David tout le temps où il séjourna chez les Philistins.
12 And Achish trusted David, thinking, "He must certainly be detested by his people Israel. I shall have him as my vassal forever."	12 Mais Akich faisait confiance à David, il se disait même: “Les Israélites, les gens de son peuple, ne peuvent sûrement plus le sentir, il restera donc pour toujours à mon service.”
